I am trying to get an idea of your typical coming two year old heights. Thus I am polling all of you. Would a filly that just turned 2 be small at 15.1h?

My yearling (WB/TB) is around 15.1- 15.1 1/2 now ( at 15 months), so it would be hard for me to say. Mine should mature to 16.2 - 16.3. My 3 year old (WB/TB) who is 16. 3 1/2 was 16.1 when he turned 2. Just to give you an idea.

In my experience, yes, but I'm allowed to say that, as I have a April 2006 "baby" that is just now 15.1. I'm hoping that she will hit at least 16 hands (I don't even know if that is reasonable?). It seems like everyone is always post about their 16.3 two-year old, so I don't know!
What is your filly's breeding; some horses are just slow to mature and I'm hoping that my filly is one of those!

Well its a filly I am looking at purchasing. She is by a dutch warmblood out of a xx (GOV approved) dam. Dam was 16.0h and sire is 16.2h.

I have a dutch gelding out of a TB mare that is 16.2 as a 2 year old. I am told he is big but I think sometimes they grow at different rates... He should be 16.3 to 17.1 when he is done...

We have a 2 yo filly (March 31) who is currently approx. 16h - string test says 16.3h-17h. She is a big girl - I often wonder if people are actually sticking their horses because she seems much larger than any of our other foals have ever been and towers over her mother! :)

Likewise according to his owner, our 2 yo gelding (March 23) from the same foal crop is only 15.1h or so. He should mature 15.3-16h.

Lastly we have a homebred TB g who was 14.2h at 1 year, 15h at 2, 15.2h at 3, and is now 16.1h legitimately on a stick.

Rendaivu- I have a gelding by the same sire as the filly you are looking at. He is will be 2 at the end of this month. He is just a hair over 15.2.

2 tb colts (2 yrs in April) 15.1h and 16h (expected to mature 15.3 and 16.3 according to parents)

1 paint colt (2 years in March) 15.3 but is over 16 at the hip. I have no idea what he is expected to mature at.

You have to figure that most horses are at 75% of their height by age 2. I think most horses, some are late bloomers, you can add 2 inches to their current height at 2 yrs and it is pretty accurate.

I measured the new two year old last night, she is 15.2+ in front and 16hh at the hip right now. I expect her to go to 16.1 or so.

I bought a 16.3hh two year old a couple years ago that is today (at four) the same height as he was the day I picked him up. I am grateful as he is too big for me as it is. :)

It really depends on the horse. I have one 3 year old that was ALMOST 15.2 on his 2nd birthday. He's currently over 16 hands and in a big growth spurt right now. I think he's going to hit 16.2 or so. His little brother (who turns 2 at the end of June) is just barely 15 hands right now. I'm guessing he'll mature at 16 hands. Both are 1/2 Friesian, which tends to be a slower maturing breed. I think, the more Thoroughbred in the Warmbloods, the faster they hit their final height.

I had another kid a few years ago who was about 15.2 at 2 years, matured to 16.2. Another who was 15.3 and matured to 17+hands. Yet another who was 15 hands at 2 and matured to 15.3. So, with the later maturing breeds, generally I count on about 3 to 6 inches still to come. Generally, my 2 year olds range from 15 to 15.3 hands.

On the other hand, I have a YEARLING who is about 15.2 - but he has no Friesian in him, mostly Trakehner and Holsteiner. I'm assuming he's an early maturing horse, HOPING I don't end up with something 17.2, gulp...

I would ask the breeders about the lines and maturity rate. Some don't grow much after 2 others will add another 6 inches. I have a TB filly around 15.1 and she string tests to 16 hh. I have a 3/4 ID gelding who will be officially two the end of the month and hes 15.3 and I thought he would be around 16.1, but I'm thinking I could be wrong since Irish tend to mature slowly. Last year my 2.5 yr filly sticked 17 1/4 at her inspection and I'm not measuring again . My other mare was 16 at 2 and sticked at 16.1 1/4 at her inspection at 3.5

My currant two year old is 16 hhs.. his sire is 16'2 his dam is 16'3... He is not any where near his final height by the looks of his legs / joints... This guy is a mixed bag of pedigrees, TB / Hano / Appy ...

I have a mare that in her 4-5 year grew over a hand taller ... She was on stall rest at the time and i could almost see her growing ... now over 17 hhs tall and needs to fill out..

I'm curious what breeds grow faster and slower for you breeders out there. Warmbloods seem to grow slower but, how about QH, TB, Appy, Welsh, etc...or is it all about the individual and his/her parentage?

My 2 YO was last sticked in April (April foal) at 14.3 at withers/15.1 behind and expect her to mature at 15.2 to 15.3H. OTOH her yearling brother is 14.2 at the withers and 15H behind at 11 mos old so he is going to be much bigger...I think at least 16.2 at this rate!!
15.1H at 2 would depend a bit on the breed as well. A stock bred QH/Paint will be usually quicker to mature than a WB 2 YO for height. A 2 YO WB you are probably looking at at least 16.1H. If that is short depends on if you are 5'3 or 6'3!~

when I was a kid back in the dark ages, I read in the coth that the rule was:
12mos/14 hands
24mos/15 hands
36mos/16 hands
for TBs and most horses.
Arabs I think are different, their people can tell you.
and I know WBs are different since I learned that after I bought my WB and nice Sherri Donaldson in Bluffton explained that my WB would keep growing till he was 7. He did.
TB rule is the standard and the coth was correct years ago and now.
so your horse is going to be over 16 hands.
hope this helps.
someone will tell you this is wrong, haha. I'm not an expert. don't pretend to be one.

My filly is 2 tomorrow and is 15.1 at the withers and 15.2 at the rump. She string tests to be 16. 1/2 - 16.1 1/2. So in the world of the WB fillies I would say that the height of our fillies is on the small side of average. I personally don't want a huge horse but that is just my personal preference! It's funny b/c I am 5' 7" and would much rather be on something that is right around 16 hands!

I know someone who's gelding was 14.3 at 2 years old and he ended up maturing to 16 hands. I feel like with the WB's you can generally add 4" to their height as a 2 year old. I am sure a lot of people will disagree but based on what I have heard from friends with babies that is a good guideline.

My filly just turned two and she is 16. at the withers and 16.1 at the croup. She has long legs and I think she has a growth pattern like her dam, who finished at 16 hands, but it took her 5 years to get there. Fabuleux sires height, so she's a late blooming giant- training will be fun! Peg

you guys are really scaring me.

I have a rio filly that is two in two weeks - she is 16.2 eek!!! He feet are horse feet - just free jumped her for the first time on the weekend and am in awe.

I have a yearling colt that is 16 hh already.

They are out of different mares and stallions - I guess we just breed them big - must be the great pasture and all the fresh air they get.

LOL! You may have to stop measuring that filly & colt of yours! My friend has a baby that she literally ran out of stick with. Doesn't know how big he is and doesn't want to know! He is by Watchman and I think that he was something crazy like 16.2 as a yearling... I'll have to check with her but eek! That is too big for me!

Sounds like both of yours will make it to 16.3 at least! I bet that they are both beautiful! Do you have pics?

My boy won't be 2 until mid July, he is Westfalen/TB. I put a stick on him today and he is 16.1H.
His sire and dam are both 16.3H.
