I just rescued back a Shetland gelding I had owned until the age of 3. He's about 7 now. He's only about 11 hands, beautiful buckskin, and an amazing temperament. He's one of those once-in-a-lifetime ponies, but at the moment, I don't have a job for him. He's at my best friend's farm in Cincinnati, OH. I live in Portland, OR. Right now he's just fattening up, as he's pretty under weight from the home he was in before. There's only been two owners, myself and her. I will never, ever give up ownership of him again, but don't want to see him just be a pasture buddy as he's only 7 and has so much athleticism. Never had an off day, serious illness, nothing. He's hardy, kind, smart and happy (not sassy, mind you! He doesn't act like a pony :)

My thoughts are if there was someone that wanted a child's pony, he would be awesome for that. Green, but safe. When my friend went to pick him up, the girl was riding alone outside bareback & shoeless in the pasture. Very athletic jumper, beautiful horsey movement. I would love to free lease him to a child that will love him like he should be loved. Another thought is some kind of driving, possibly to someone with a disability or to be used in some kind of program. I'm just throwing thoughts out here, as there are many possibilities. He's not your average pony, personality-wise or athleticism, so I really just don't want to see him sit around. Below are some links to some pictures. The home would have to either be in Oregon or in Ohio. In Ohio, it is possible to board at my friend's house, who has an indoor arena and some trails north of Cincinnati. I'm looking privately into a lot of possibilities, but am throwing this out there in case someone knows of someone who might be looking for something just like him :) Again!! We just got him back, so he is severely underweight at the moment, but happy. My friend walked a child around on him yesterday and is starting the process of fattening him up and possibly using him in lessons at her barn until we find something else. I can be e-mailed at penhille@yahoo.com.

Well, I'm out; I live in MD. But he'd sure fit the bill for me here. If you change your mind on location, let me know.

Out of curiosity, what would you use him for? I hesitate to let him go so far because I've already sold him to a "friend" once who, with all good intentions, let him get to this condition. It's much harder for me to let him out of my sight this time around.

Hi-
I live down near Albany, Oregon and have been looking for a pony to lease for my horse crazy 7 year old sister. She is actually a pretty experienced rider for her age and very compassionate with animals. She absolutly loves horses and he would be just her size and very spoiled. Let me know if we can work something out. Thanks

Oh, he'd make a great little driving pony!! How does a pony get so sunken at the hip??

Sadly little girls grow up and unless the parents can/will keep him forever... it's a temporary placement lots of times.

That was loss of weight. He's emaciated with a winter coat, basically. I don't know what he would be on a scale, but under 5, for sure. 3?

The little girl did need something larger, but that's why the mother sold him back to me, fortunately. And even though I have no children, I'm not giving up ownership of him even if it means he is a pasture buddy for his entire life. I bought him at 8 months old, and I'm determined that he will die with me. I can temporarily place him out to as many little children as I find, as long as he comes back to me when they get bigger :)

I guess I should have said 'How the heck can you starve a pony?? it isn't that easy to hollow out hips on a 7 yo' though I'd rather see a Shetland slim than OBESE -IMO it's hard to get them THAT thin!! well worms contribute to 'that look as well I guess

Those were my thoughts. Those pictures don't even show it as bad as it is, even the bad ones. But at least I got him back now.

I can vouch for this pony! I am the friend the OP mentioned who has the pony now, and I've known him as long as she has. He is most definitely priceless. His personality is to die for - he's quiet but not a deadhead by any means, he's incredibly smart, affectionate, and he's so athletic it's just unbelievable to watch him move. I can only wish my warmblood mare moved like him. I was thinking of free jumping him soon just to see what he's got, I will be sure to take pictures if/when I do.

Oh, he's gorgeous! I hope you find a little girl to show him, I'd love to see pictures of him all dolled up!

I think Minerva would be giving you this (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2394/2340861355_90bf99f1fb.jpg) look right about now, and saying, "You mean the OTHER warmblood mare. Right?"

I absolutely love that picture of your mare.

For those that have posted, I've gotten some interest from a local handicapped riding facility that is looking for a driving and riding pony for the program. Best of all, due to the trainer's immense schedule already, they need me to work and continue his training (and who doesn't love to be needed?). I'll keep you updated. It still may fall through, but keep your fingers crossed.
