My BM's mare gave birth early this morning and she prolapsed... sadly the vet could not save her and she was euthanized. Thankfully the baby was able to nurse off the mare some although no one knows exactly how long or much she was able to nurse. She delivered while no one was around.

Thank goodness for the mare center - they were able to loan my BM a nurse mare that is being picked up probably as I type this... Please jingle for the baby... she is so sweet and loving and seems strong and healthy now, please jingle for her continued health. She has the cutest newborn baby whiskers and a blaze shaped like a Z, she is dark bay and looks like she'll turn grey like her momma was.

Thanks everyone! I think those jingles have been helping b/c I just got news that the baby and the nurse mare felt 'love at first sight' for each other... Still a ways to go but thankfully a little luck seems to be behind this precious little pony filly...

I am going back out to the barn with my hubby in a bit. I will try to take some pics and post for all to see.

So sorry about the mare. It seems like a bad year for our horses. So glad foster momma and baby bonded.

My thoroughbred mare delived a stillborn filly morning of 5/30/08. We froze colostrum and she is streaming milk, huge milker. Located in Northville, MI. If in need of a nursemare please call Sprintland Training Center 248-349-3430 or email blackwatchtb@yahoo.com

awww... hugs to all... Blackwatch--how wonderful of you to offer too.

I lost a colt one year, and was able to gather colostrum and save an orphan foal born that day. I can't tell you how much it helped the loss. I was still sad, but I had a *mission* and a purpose, and to know that my and Journey's loss helped another beautiful filly LIVE was wonderful.

RFS... many prayers for the little one. Mine wasn't orphaned until 5 weeks, so a different scenario altogether, but it was still HARD and heartbreaking... Search for "Igloo Mama" or some such here... I am pretty sure it's Showjumpers66 who has the info on her website--it's an AMAZING way to raise an orphan... I wouldn't do it any other way!

Good luck, and Godspeed Mama Mare.

Thanks everyone! Blackwatch, I am so sorry to hear that your mare delivered a still born, that is just devastating. Jingles for you and your mare.

I went out to see the baby and the Mom and they are both doing well. The Mom lost her baby yesterday mid afternoon, I am not exactly sure what happened but I believe the baby had a hard delivery. She seems like a fantastic Mom and it was so sweet to watch her nursing, grooming and caring for this new little babe by her side!
