I have some older pairs of white breeches that I would like to dye black. Has anyone ever done this? Was it successful?

Yes. :) Had to do them twice to get them really dark.

At best you may be able to dye them grey (though the knee patches/full seats would stay white). Your good dyes (not RIT, which will just end up eventually coming out in the wash or on you) react with the fibers in the fabric. The trick is that they react with natural fibers - meaning that unless your breeches are 100% cotton, the dye will look somewhat faded. The higher the cotton - or linen, silk, etc (but you don't make breeches out of those ;)) - content, the richer the color will be.

Not black, but... I've read that one of the Olympic riders, I forgot who... dyes all of her breeches, saddle pads, gloves, shirts in the bathtub with tea bags overnight and it turns out really nice, even color. I think there was a topic about that on UDBB.
If it is a natural fiber yes it can be dyed.
Not sure about synthetics.

They are full seat Pikeur Laguna breeches. Not the cotton micro-fiber type.

Synthetic blend breeches, even 100% nylon, take dye very well. Clarino dyes, as well. You should use the washing machine method, IME, as that's the easiest to clean up after. I've dyed countless pairs of breeches, and found that the ones with the least amount of cotton, dye the best.
Oh, and I've had success dyeing white breeches scarlet, army green, sapphire blue, and purple, in addition to black. Used plain ol' Rit dye for all of them, and never had a problem with them fading/running.

For those of you with a taste for adventure in your breeches colors, you can "go custom" with Rit dye colors and create your own. This chart gives "recipes" for custom colors using Rit dyes. Enjoy!

just be careful, sometimes the black Rit dye can turn some fabrics purple instead of black!! the navy dye will sometimes do this too. goodluck, post pics of the outcome for us!!!

Not to hijack the thread, but I will... has anyone here ever dyed those Rompf (sp?) show shirts??..not sure if they're cool-max but they are kinda nylon-y type material?? I have a bunch that I wear everyday for schooling but they are not so white anymore but still in good shape otherwise.

it will likely not take the color very dark. that type of material will turn out more of a pastel of whatever dark color u use. thats my experiance with the dyeing i've done anyway. i dyed a white bra purple one time, the cups ended up lavender (nylon), the back where the material was a nylon/spandex took it dark purple, the straps dark and all this stiching was dark. it actually looked pretty cool:D! so u never know what u'll get!! but so long as ur up for ANY change, give it a shot.

OK So where does one find a dye other than good old Rit? Is there somewhere special to purchase a higher grade of dye?

Great dyes. You could probably call them for advise too. Very knowledgeable people and good customer service.
