are the Petrie Half-Chaps stiff enough?
Need boots. Can't afford ANYTHING. Know that stiffer is better--but it's also more $$$.
:sigh:

If you are ever planning to show in them, the Petries won't do, unfortunately.
The Dressage Extensions el cheapos are supposed to be pretty good--I'm thinking of trying them next time round. And last time I looked, Dover had their Piaffe boot on super closeout. I was tempted to buy a pair, but I really, really don't need to spend the money until my very elderly Ariats bite the dust completely.

argh, should've added: must be available in 'hefty calf' size. :dead: The DE's don't even come close.
I have a pair of Effies for show. But they don't fit quite well enough in the foot to ride (and teach) in daily--plus I like to have 'show' boots. Obviously can't get another pair of Effies. (I do have the Ebay saved search, of *course* )
So half-chaps can be an option if they are stiff enough.

Where are you located? I know Rick's has consignment boots and out of style new in box boots for cheap. Some very nice starting around $100 (including some Effinghams). You might want to see if your local tack store has something similar.
Or, you could post a wanted ad with how much you can spend on eWarmbloods (and I think Uncouth allows it too.)
Actually, it is illegal to show in half chaps. So unless you are doing all schooling shows, they really aren't an option.

I bought the Saxxon equileather tall boots and love them. I bought them a little bit big so I could wear my regular thick socks. I put them right on and went on a trail ride and two days later wore them in a show. They never hurt my feet at all. They were a little tall on my leg, but they have already dropped a good bit and are fitting better already. I think they area about $80.

Starting 12/1/08, gaiters, half chaps, and leggings will be allowed for Intro, Training, and First levels. (rule change as of January this year)

I was going to say the dover boots are stiff and not a "name brand" per say, but then I remembered that they cost more then even the cheapest petrie dressage boots.
Scan ebay- seems like every once in a while theres a flood of people getting rid of custom or semi-custom boots, vogels, petries, konigs, denhers & der daus ('course, I don't know anyone with the last 2, so I don't know if they come fully lined & are stiff enough).

I like the dressage extensions cheap boots. Actually quite nice for $200! They don't have a rod up the back but, they're very stiff...
The other nice thing is that you can get a wide variety of widths and heights in these boots!
