What are your alls fixes for a saddle that is slightly too wide? I have really good fit in the back area and just a little to much width in the shoulder/wither area. I still have about three fingers though between the pommel and the wither. Would a pad thats built up in front help? I dont want to mess up the balance on his back, so suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would recommend a Tad Coffin pad. I have tried all sorts of pads - mattes, thinline, Nuumed...(I really should get a job being a tester so this stuff is paid for) anyway, you name it and since I got my TC I just love it (as does my horse), I really have found what I'm looking for in my saddle fit (for the next 6 months anyway - lol!)

Try skito pads. They custom make them using a pic of your saddle and the horses' back. And they are a good deal...plus they will talk with you on the phone to get it just right. (No, I don't work for them!)

For a slightly cheaper solution ;), I've found that the flat Cashel pad works well for this purpose.

I had the same problem. A good solution for me was this pad from Dressage Extensions. It has removeable closed cell foam inserts for the wither area & back panels so you can "customize" your fit. Good luck!

What about getting your saddle correctly fitted by a master saddler? If it is a wool-floccked saddle it may need some stuffing to make it fit better.

I had the same issue with mine when I bought a new horse. A saddle fitter help me with mine (reflocking) and she showed me how to make shims using shelf liner to fill in any gaps if necessary (which I haven't needed).

in the bad old days we used to put a navajo under the saddle, and fold it back so it was double thickness at the shoulder. pull it up into the pommel of the saddle so it doesn't bind over the withers. the navajos we had were very thick wool. they may still be around for western saddles.

I have the same prob and I use a Mattes sheepskin half pad over a Mattes light saddle blanket. Has worked a treat for over a year now. Mine came a little low over the wither though but is perfect with the Mattes.

The Passier Flexipad works very well for problems like yours.
