Will higher costs (gas, entry fees, etc) change your plans for recognized dressage shows this year?

I dropped the recognized breed shows due to costs.

then i think the last choice isn't the right one for you.
the last choice, (sorry can't seem to change wording) is for people who did not show recognized dressage shows last year, but will show this year, and not have to restrict or cut back due to costs.
the reason for the 'did not show last year', is the person can't then compare how much they showed last year to how much they will show this year.
all they can compare to is what they hoped to do vs what they will have to wind up doing.
i think like a sort of warped statistician, and may have to try again with better questions, but let's see what the results are with this one.

If you know what the choices are for everyone why bother with a poll.

Yes I got that impression too.

Yes I figured out that all by myself.
all they can compare to is what they hoped to do vs what they will have to wind up doing.
There is an echo here.

No changes for me. Seriously, it's extra gas $$, but in the grand scheme of things, not that much more expensive overall. I have not seen a big jump in other show related costs (other than hay). I work all winter to prepare for the shows in the spring and fall, so fossil fuels be damned I'm pressing on!

I don't show for points or year-end awards. I show to get qualified for championships. If it takes two weekends or four weekends. I did qualify for 1st level this year, in early May, so now I stay home and train for second level. I may do a show before championships to knock off the rust of first -4 and do a second test.

slc2--- you work to a plan,
you asking people for imformation as to how they do what with what
what you need is a plan-- you start at the basics and work towards a goal or aim then when accomplised that move onto the next goal or aim
if you aim to high and not got stuffing to back it up you will fail
qoute the three p'S
p p p-- proper planing prevents piss poor performance-- unqoute

I had *grand* plans of showing 2nd in the summer, then 3rd in the fall. Planned even to do one or two recognized, and all the fees that incurs. (including the horse registration--he hasn't been yet. :dead: )
Instead I am doing ONE two day/two lesson a day trip to teacher's in June, and saving for another in the fall. Hoping for ONE schooling show in the fall.
And praying I can keep them in feed an me in gasoline between now and then. :dead:

huh? I did not vote in the poll because it did not have "showed breed last year won't show breed this year"

I'm staying local--no out-of-state shows unless I qualify for Regionals and decide to go.

You need another category! If I'm ponying up the expense to go to a show, I likely won't change the number of classes I'm entering since that is a fraction of the total costs.
I definitely cut back on my showing this year as compared to last year, although costs was only one (but a significant) factor.

I have a budget and a "fixed horsie income" so I have to limit where I go. Costs, mostly fuel is killing us at 4.00 a gallon now.

Well, the tally for the show I want to enter in June will come out to something like this:
Entry fee for one lower level test: $50
All other taxes (aka "fees"): $98
Total for show: $148.
That is for one day at a two day show. I'll be trailering in for the day, only. (Can't afford to do the whole weekend...with stabling, feed, bedding, another $50 in entry fees)
Here's the list of taxes that I'll need to pay so I can show:
USEF Drug: $12
CDS Non-Member fee: $10
DASC Non-Member fee: $5
CDFA Drug: $5
CDS Travel Grant (mandatory): $2
DASC Championship show (mandatory): $1
CDS-San Diego Chapter (mandatory): $3
Grounds Fee: $35
Office Fee: $25
TOTAL: $98.00
On the entry form, it also provides a box for you to write in amount to donate to CDS-San Diego Chapter (!)
I'm not a member of CDS or DASC, hence the non-member penalties. However, even though I'm not a member, I'm still required to pay their Travel Grant and Championship Show taxes. The mandatory "CDS-SD Chapter" tax - I have no idea what that is for.
Anyone else want to list the taxes ("fees") they'll have to pay ? It might be kind of fun to see them all...

Mardi,
with all those fees, is it really worth it for just one class?

I already paid the overhead fees of membership.
USEF Membership, $70ish (H/J and Dressage for disciplines)
USHJA Membership, $55
5 year USDF membership, $250, paid in 2006
VADA/NOVA Membership $55
Entry for 2 days at a show in 2 weeks at Morven Park, $212. That is for 4 classes (2 per day) the grounds fee (cheaper than stabling and I'm only 30 minutes away), and all office fees.
PVDA raised their per-class fee to $40, VADA is still at $35 for the licensed shows, and so I am picking the VADA shows this year at Morven. That is for 2nd level and under. It is higher for 3rd and up.
The shows that are probably not going to happen are the rated H/J shows. I can 2 days in a USDF/USEF Licensed show for a lot less.
Schooling shows are $25/class, and rarely have a grounds fee or any office fees. Same w/ local h/j shows, $12-17/class, may or may not have a ground fee equal to a class fee.
So far this year I've been to one dressage schooling show and 3 local hunter shows. I am entered in a licensed dressage show, but have no plans currently for a recognized h/j. I want to do 2 more licensed dressage shows this year, hope to do 2 more schooling shows.

Not showing for the first year in a long time. High cost of fuel is definitely playing into this. But the horses themselves really made the final decision. The gelding, just turned 6, showed quite a bit last two years, was high score at last show of 07 when we moved up to 1st, so he has shown me he is fine in a show environment, now we stay home and work on moving up. He has also gone thru a huge growth phase, and he needs a new saddle. Yikes, the cost on those have gone up considerably.
The mare is coming back from laminitis. I won't push her, for obvious reasons. Showing does tend to put us in a "must do this" mentality, and I just won't have that, not now, not with her.
