TB or not TB?
May. 13, 2008, 05:15 PM
Since there's so many yucky threads right now, I thought I'd start a happier one that reminds us why we do what we do. I don't have any current photos since I've been horseless for a while, but here are some from my youth.

Ears pricked, eyes up - my first OTTB (http://home.mindspring.com/%7Esilvan/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/theo6.jpg)
Ditches or dogs? (http://home.mindspring.com/%7Esilvan/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/theo4.jpg)

Here is one of my favorites - it's not of me, but the horse was my father's trail mount-turned-eventer. Eventing is awesome like that. It is very exciting to jump XC! (http://home.mindspring.com/%7Esilvan/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dandy5.jpg)

Haha so what are your favorite pics that remind you why you event?

I love the ditches or dogs picture - it's such a beautiful setting, and such a quintessential eventing moment!

This picture of my horse in his heyday has been one of my favorite eventing pictures since well before I imagined I'd ever own him. The keen and happy expression on his face, the way he's got his knees pulled up so high, and the drops of water splashing around them -- it all just shows the essence of eventing for me.

Yahoo :D!(galloping to the finish, we placed first at this recognized event!) More to come...

Edit: try that link?

That one worked - though it shows as a tiny thumbnail for me. Galloping to the finish, awesome moment, that will get you addicted to eventing! Especially finishing in 1st place!

My favorite personal eventing moment was leaving the startbox - hearing "3, 2, 1, have a nice ride!" I don't have any good startbox photos though - anyone got any of those to share?

I love this idea too! :) KMErickson -- I love your expression!!

My boy, the Buzzmonster, with Ralph -- the Off the bush track TB that the vets said I might as well retire as a 7 year old, 'cause he'd never do anything:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg180/libbyduffy/RHXC2.jpg

I love this stadium pic -- from his first Novice:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg180/libbyduffy/Ocalasj2.jpg

and my all time favorite pic of me and Ben -- we aren't jumping anything big, but I love his expression here:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg180/libbyduffy/BenPTwater.jpg

and I haven't evented this one yet, but he has evented and done some cool stuff and I hope to get him sound enough again to do at least something little -- this was before he tore the suspensory:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg180/libbyduffy/Profilepics040.jpg

I love the bonding moment in this pic -- that is mine and TB or Not TB's boy. He has more than one mommie! :D

Thanks for a positive thread!

Isn't he just adorable?! :D You did good picking that one out!!!!

He gets re- u/s next Thursday, the 22nd -- we'll have to jingle so loud that the suspensory will shrink in fear!

Kim sent me some pics of him competing in NZ -- I'll have to find those and get those up too. :)

I wish I had more pictures that were good quality... or that I could find more of them. I had an old one of me breaking from the start box... I used to love that pic.

Two that I do have...

Pony Club festival clinic with either Carol Kozlowski or Sara Kozumplic (I rode with both, but don't know which one this was taken from).

Yeah :) I've got a fabulous video somewhere of my horse freaking before going into the starbox... (welcome to an ex-advanced going training...) I mean, leaping and jumping, so excited. I'll try to get it up on youtube!

Awesome, put it up on youtube! I had a similar experience - ex-advanced going novice. He hadn't evented in 2 years, but boy did he ever remember what to do. We were prancing around the start box, me trying to sit still, not pull on him, remember to breathe, not accidentally goose him with my leg, remember to breathe, and when the starter announced "30 seconds", Magic whirled and half-reared! Going into the startbox, feeling his haunches drop as he launched us out again, I think that moment by itself stands as the most fun I have ever had on a horse - I'd love it if I had it on video!

Yay for a great thread!

I love eventing because it doesn't matter how much or how little I paid for my horse! Because even at my little levels, there's no feeling like looking between pricked ears, ears that are saying "What's next?!"

This is a picture from a show we had to scratch...he pulled a muscle in the dressage ring (after the pic) but I love this picture because the rain is falling...

Here is a picture from our first training at Farewell farms in 2003. I was sooo nervous, but as soon as we came out of the start box he took control...all I had to do was hold mane and kick...

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a233/ImetJewel/riley7.jpg

He unfortunately had to be retired from eventing to the Hunter/jumpers () because he tore a muscle...Here he is clocking me around the 2006 PSJ Adult Medal finals...after his injury he couldn't properly jump the fences so he cantered everything :)

What a great thread!! I've loved looking at everybody's adorable horses.
So.... why do I love eventing? I think I love it so much because so many different types of people and horses can enjoy it. Here are a few of my favorite ponies.

Jasper- Percheron/TB gelding. I purchased Jasper to help me gain confidence and learn to have fun at shows again. I'm in college full time, so I don't get the opportunity to show very much, but Jasper won 3 events for me and then went on to place 4th at the Area III championships in '06. Now, due to arthritis in his hocks, he is the perfect dressage schoolmaster for my Mom.
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg282/jjakes7018/Horses/SnazzyJazzy.jpg

Digger- New Zealand TB gelding who you can tell from the pic is a bit spooky about the jumping, but really tries his heart out.
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg282/jjakes7018/Horses/Digger.jpg

Declan- Irish Sport Horse gelding. Declan is my current horse, and I think he's going to really be something special. He's only a five yr old, and people usually take one look at him and immediately ask me, "What do you see in him?!". He's 17.2 hands, all legs, and is a little on the goofy side. But I love him, and I think that's all that matters.
This first pic is of him competing with his old owner in Ireland.

This was from Fitch's corner from two summers ago, coming out of the water. My horse and I had such an amazing connection during this course that I'll never forget it. It was one of the most exhilarating and memorable experiences of my life, and just recalling the feeling chokes me up till this day, especially since Ruffy has since passed away.

I love eventing because well I can look like this.......

http://www.printroom.com/ViewGalleryPhoto.asp?evgroupid=0&userid=LMV&gallery_id=1043296&tcount=72&scount=16

and not get laughed out of the ring.

It doesnt matter that he lives at home with a grass ring and 2 jumps to school over,or that my boots were bought on E-Bay for $100.00, Its not about who you know and who you dont, the 25,000 horse or him who was 1,000.

So while I work on getting myself back, I shouldnt be worried about taking him places and getting him miles that he needs.... It was a long rode, I might look terrible but at least my horse looks cute, and for that it was all worth it, shitty position and all !!!

The first one is my first novice event with Andy, at Elysian Hills. It was unrecognized. I had never galloped and jumped a horse like him before and it was crazy pants for me at the time! http://pic14.picturetrail.com/VOL520/2719870/6509826/84245986.jpg (http://pic14.picturetrail.com/VOL520/2719870/6509826/84245986.jpg)

This one is four years later at Southern Pines at Prelim. The other 2 phases had not gone very well for us, but XC was amazing. He was so good to the corners. Photo by Brant Gamma.http://brantgamma.exposuremanager.com/p/mobius_sharon/bgsp098017#photo_s

Hi. Newbie here. I thought this might be as good a place as any to get my feet wet. :) I'm a semi-old eventer that has been out of the game for quite a while, and am bringing along a super green OTTB that I have high eventing hopes for.

I love eventing because I believe that we, and our horses, have the most well rounded education possible in the equestrian world. I love the beauty and grace of dressage, the courage of cross country, and the agility of stadium jumping. I love the bond that's formed with our horses because of our hours in the saddle, and the trust that is required to compete successfully. And I also love the close knit community that I haven't seen much of in other disciplines. I just love eventing!

My first pony on our first time out at training, oh, 16 or so years ago.

http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o167/mmcwhit/?action=view&current=ValTable.jpg

http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o167/mmcwhit/?action=view&current=ValWater.jpg

My "Old Man" who would have carried me to my first prelim had we not had so many hoof issues, and always so close to the "move up" show that I'd have to either scratch or bump back down to training, but he had that IT factor, we just never got a chance to show it.

http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o167/mmcwhit/?action=view&current=Roo1.jpg

http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o167/mmcwhit/?action=view&current=RooHHT.jpg

By the way, I still have him. He's 20 years old and still packing me around fun shows.

And my new, very green OTTB mare. No over fences shots yet because we've only jumped a few times and the jumps are so small (and she's so quick) that it's almost impossible to get the timing right. ;)

http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o167/mmcwhit/?action=view&current=100_0827.jpg

http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o167/mmcwhit/?action=view&current=100_0821.jpg

And the last one because I love it.

http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o167/mmcwhit/?action=view&current=487895-R1-031-14_014.jpg

(I hope all of these are done right. Total noob!)

I am in Martinez, about 20 minutes from San Francisco. We used to go to Rod's all the time when we were younger. Now I don't really have anything that would suite taking up there, but it was always fun swimming the horses in the creek in the summer afternoons at Summer Moon HT.

We had so much fun our first time on XC that we were almost a minute too fast. Whoops, time to buy a watch and slow down some .

I LOVE this horse. Where did you get him and what did he look like when he was young. I just bought two app bred horses, one is solid, no characteristics but is roaning a bit (2 yr old) and the other is a blanket app (yearling) but I am wondering if he will roan out like yours. Any info would be great. It looks like you both are having a wonderful time. It is really nice to see all of these wonderful pictures with some of the horrible ones being released in the press it isn't enough that you see happy horses and happy riders which I assume is more the case. Great pics!!!!!

That is so funny that you said the attitude is whatchya doing... I actually named my yearling blanket who is Waps bred "Waps Ya Doin" because he has the SAME attitude. I love the apps and although I don't event, I plan on doing hunters and some field hunting with these horses. They are wonderful horses, kind, brave and hearty. Good luck with flecks - sooooo cute!!!!

I have to add a video link - it's my favorite eventing video of ALL time, with various moments from the early 90s put to the tune of a song called One Perfect Moment. This video can cheer me up when the whole world has me down!

http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=28269719

My favs from the video:

Dorothy and Molokai - he'll jump into the water just as big as he likes, thank you very much, and she'll let him do what he does best. Their snippet is just the essence of horse and rider in sync and LOVING what they do. I love how she wiggles her shoulders toward the end, like she just can't contain her happiness.

Jill and Nirvana - probably should have taken the tug, but it doesn't really matter when you're on the most agile horse on the planet! [Kim Severson made this comment when I showed her the video: "Where do you GET horses like that!"]

Mark Combs and Solomon - pure unadulterated joy at the double corners

There's also Ralph Hill, Stephen Bradley, Bruce Davidson (riding Mystic something looking quintessentially Bruce), Karen Lende, Denny Emerson, Phyllis Dawson... It's just a fun video set to an upbeat song.

Hope y'all enjoy as much as I do!

Thanks so much for posting that video DizzyMagic.
I've never seen a video of Molokai go before, that jump into the water gave me goosebumps. What a partnership!
And Nirvana's flying leap made me :yes:. The epitome of athleticism.

This is what XC should be about.. there were some quite technical combos in the video, but all encourage BRAVE, FORWARD riding. Not to mention all the rider/horse combos looked like they were just plain having a BLAST.

Yeah :) I've got a fabulous video somewhere of my horse freaking before going into the starbox... (welcome to an ex-advanced going training...) I mean, leaping and jumping, so excited. I'll try to get it up on youtube!

Nudge!!! Where's that video!? :D

Diz, what a great video! Really fun to watch Stephen and Phyllis back in the day! One thing I noticed is that all horses were ridden forward in the combinations! Looks like so much more fun than the having to set up and up and up in combos now.

Yep - I loved seeing them in particular because those are the two upper level riders I've spent the most time with - training/grooming/barnwork/yada...

The one of Phyllis an Altair is at the Leaf Pit at Morven. The very first time I saw a xc course was walking that advanced course with her in 1998 - it's the fourth fence on course, and I can remember walking up to that drop, looking straight down, and then looking at her and saying "You're going to do that on four different horses tomorrow?? You're f**king crazy!" She laughed long and hard... and the next day she made it look easy four times.

The video of Stephen and Sassy Reason always makes me go kind of wow - no matter what the horse does with her athletic self or where she takes off, he's always sitting right in the middle of her back. I truly love watching him ride cross-country.

The thing I love about the video (and eventing) is that the rides generally aren't "perfect" - but like some of the best parts of life, they just come together with that indefinable synergy!

Aww, Fleck, such cute baby pics!!! I'm quite jealous- my guy's previous owner had him since he was a wee one, but can't find any of his pictures right now . BTW, how old is Fleck?

Jig- not sure if this will help you, but I was told my guy was born a blanket app. The blanket is still prominent, but the front of him is roan (don't ask me about his legs and his 4 different length hairs in the winter!). He is just turning 6, and I thought I read somewhere that the roaning lightens up as they age, so it is possible things can change a bit from when they were young. He is only 1/8 app, and apparently is the only one of his siblings to get color.

I have to figure out how to post my pictures. Fleck, my blanket looks exactly like your baby pics, he by Wap Spot and Wap Spot is more like a leapord with just a bit of roaning around his neck and face.
Here is link to jgapps, if you go on the left to horses for sale and scroll down I own Opie and Cody, Opie is the blanket and Cody is the solid.

http://www.jgappaloosas.com/

I am so curious to see how he ends up. He doesn't have any white on his legs, pharm I love the way your horse does (I love the markings) and wow, nice dressage and jumping pictures!!!! I can't wait to see how they mature. The solid is starting to roan a bit but doesn't have any other characteristics. Another friend of mine bought a solid bay with characteristics and now it looks like a rose grey. He had a star that each year roaned out a little more, they do change yearly. What I like is that the legs stay dark. When I figure out how to post the pictures I will add the ones of them playing. Sooooo cute and sooooo easy, the sweetest little boys. I love them!!!! I am taking them to Devon at the end of the month, can't wait! The apps are such great horses and I totally understand how they excel in eventing: strong, brave, hearty, trustworthy.... Great attributes!

Great video!! Everyone looks so happy, the horses look to be incredible problem solvers, and it looks so fun!

Is it just me, or do the horses look smaller than most UL horses nowadays?

So cute Jig!! Keep us updated on how they are doing! You will definitely have to post pictures after Devon! I never thought I would own an appy, but they do fascinate me. His leg coloring has definitely made some people tilt their heads. He does have some other dark spots on his legs as well, which makes for some interesting patterns especially when the winter coat grows in.

Yes, Moose does live up to his name. He is just coming 6, and is part draft, so I hope he doesn't grow anymore  At least he's a pretty sweet guy that for the most part doesn't throw that size around.

Fleck- I love how you guys ALWAYS look like you're having so much fun together! Your pics always make me smile

"Why I think Eventing is pretty darn cool" by Rugbug - a confirmed hunter princess -

1. Because I can take Orion, lesson horse extra-ordinaire, who jumps like this (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/slorugbug/horse%20stuff/OrionJumpers.jpg) but who doesn't move nice enough for the hunters, who doesn't have lead changes and who HATES being around other horses so wears a sour expression, and do this with him (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/slorugbug/horse%20stuff/Orion1.jpg) and be competitive (at his and my level...of course).

2. Because what you can't tell from that picture is that I had to borrow a whole lot of stuff to look like I actually knew what I was doing....and people stepped forward willingly...from the vest and helmet cover and the arm band to the white breeches, black jacket, shirt, stock and pin for dressage day...and the offer of the coolest piece of equipment EVER...the yellow watch...from a friend at my second event who heard how I dropped from 4th to 6th because of being too slow on XC my first time out ( I went double clear second time....yeah for the yellow watch!!!!...and cool friends!!!)

3. Because about 2 or 3 strides after this jump (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/slorugbug/horse%20stuff/Orion2.jpg) I got to gallop...oops, I mean canter, (remember those time penalties?) through water. There is no water in hunters. Don't we look like we enjoy water? (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/slorugbug/horse%20stuff/Water.jpg)

4. Because you get to jump up hill (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/slorugbug/horse%20stuff/Gate.jpg) again something you don't get to do in the hunters anymore

5. Because stadium (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/slorugbug/horse%20stuff/Ostadium.jpg)is optimum time so this hunter rider doesn't get as freaked out as she does for regular jumpers...AND there's no jump off. I HATE jump-offs. :D (I bought that picture...I just don't have it in my computer)

6. And to tie this up, when I chip and get a jump like this (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/slorugbug/horse%20stuff/Orionaugjump8.jpg) all hope is not lost.

Edited to add:

7. Because I can wear DARK colored breeches for XC. How freakin' awesome is that? :D

Welcome newbie!! Awesome pictures!! :)

My first pony on our first time out at training, oh, 16 or so years ago.

http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o167/mmcwhit/?action=view&current=ValWater.jpg

No over fences shots yet because we've only jumped a few times and the jumps are so small (and she's so quick) that it's almost impossible to get the timing right. ;)

http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o167/mmcwhit/?action=view&current=100_0821.jpg

And the last one because I love it.

http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o167/mmcwhit/?action=view&current=487895-R1-031-14_014.jpg

(I hope all of these are done right. Total noob!)

Lovely horse Hellypoo- I would miss that too!!! ;)

Thanks Fleck!! He's a great guy! He's 1/4 draft (only 1/8 appy- who knew the color gene was THAT dominant) and he's ~ 17.2-17.3.
(I'm too scared to measure him at this point since people think he's grown since I got him six months ago , but that is what they said he was when I bought him)
He's just coming 6, so he's still working on using himself and knowing where his feet are at all times, but he really does try to please. Sometimes the appy-tude shows up, but then the good work ethic TB(or the lazy belgain, depending on the specific situation ) takes over and all is good again :D. He really is a mix of all three breeds, and it's pretty neat. He definitely has goofy in him as well.

OMG, I love Jerry!! Before I figured out which one he was, I clicked on his foals page and said "I love THAT one" and of course it was him! I can totally see why you want him.

wow what a beastie!!!

hee hee. yeah...though i heard too much appy with too much appy gets a very uncolored app...not sure if it's true, but it makes some sense ;) but maybe it's just the appy stubbornness that got you the color!! hee hee. nah, fleck's not too stubborn really....he's just subtle about it so you dont' realize it i guess. and smart as a whip too! he's like houdini!! you can't keep that horse in anywhere! doorknobs, old rusted over latches that take me 10 minutes to open, double ended snaps, trailer chest barns.... it's ridiculous!

Welcome newbie!! Awesome pictures!! :)

Thank you! :D

I've been lurking for a while, and really enjoy seeing everyone's pictures (gorgeous horses!) and reading everyone's thoughts during this very tense time for eventing. I live in an area that is heavily saturated with h/j and TWHs, so it's nice to get back in the loop. I love being able to find real information again, and not just see/hear people bashing the sport that I love.

Btw, the video? I think I used to have a copy of it, too, ages ago. It was nice to see it again!
