He seemed genuinely quite pleased - and every time I saw him thereafter, he told me where Smurfie was and assured he he was keeping him safe. One time in the golf cart cup holder, another time on the seat...
As someone said, who knew?

Any ideas on a point system?
Should I get "Eventer Smurf" a page on Facebook, MySpace, or Blogger?
And really we are going to have to lay down ground rules here. I mean we absolutely can NOT have Eventer Smurf involved in any felony type activities or break any FEI rules so that he could possible get suspended.
Also we must maintain very stict rules on the type of beer he is allowed as well. No Pabst Blue Ribbon!

So funny story that I just realized... When I was about 3 years old, my father was building our house (which my parents still live in) and I would run around like a wild child with pretty much no supervision... one day I stripped down, rolled around in the blue construction chalk, and ran out among all those assisting in building and proclaimed that I was "naked smurf"... it was before my eventing years, but do I get extra points for this?

Do you have pictures?
Because we can only give you 1 point for 'smurf like' behavior. But you know....if you have pictures of the incident we could give you 5 points!
Pees pants laughing at the visual. And I totally get it....cause my Grandmother used to call me the Gypsy child cause I had no supervision...and my behavior was a little on the 'lawless' side as a child.
Apparently....I had Wonder Woman Underoos and used to strip down to them and go into superhero mode w/out the least provacation no matter where we were.....including one time appartently at church.

He could become the most well traveled eventer of all time. Maybe he could get an award at convention?
My only concern here is that at some point, after numerous CCI****s and CIC***s and Young Event Smurf competitions, he will no longer be a true smurf.
Perhaps he should be limited to the LLs. Maybe a T3DE is his maximum. He is, after all, a smurf.
However, should we decide to bestow an award on him, I think it should be named for Capt. Mark Phillips, the man who dared to call us smurfs.

You guys don't know about our SMURFIES here with the Area II Adult Riders. This is the brainchild of ..... well she can be nameless for the moment .... and we have several different smurfs we give out as awards, the "Smurfies" to each other for different important activities during the year. We have a Hug Smurf and a Poppa Smurf etc. the person who is the best positive influence gets the Hug one, etc. We vote on them online for the annual meeting. I don't know all the categories but I got one once for something, I still have him. How about I take him with me to Fair Hill this coming weekend and see what he can get pictured with? Or on?

In doing more smurf research I found this SMURF. Wish I could get one to give to Gobi but this one is apparently very rare, only 100 made. I'm thinking that Gobi needs a Smurf.
But of course the whole smurf thing makes me wonder:
"Is that a Smurf in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?"
Oh, and anyone who knows me knows that I will have to paint spots on my Smurf. Will that destroy or enhance the collector value?
Ilex
May. 13, 2008, 02:12 PM
I wonder if you can paint the figurines. Maybe give him a blue collar with white trim?
Well....if you can get a member of the team.....to do there dressage AND stadium round w/him in there pocket.
Well that would make him a team member. AND there for qualify him for his blue collar.

P.S. I'm not sure how many points that a feat of that nature would be worth. But depending on the competition AND whether the team makes it to the podium. And there is documented proof. Like Eventer Smurf hanging out of said pocket. Well you would probable be the undisputed Queen/King of smurfdom!

I'll run the idea past him. With all his weird obsessions, one never knows! (He does express great admiration in one of his blogs for "Dead Hampton" who bit Mark Phillips twice. Gobi had no trouble with Mark when he met him because of his "fierce yapping and courage," Gobi's, not Mark's. Mark doesn't yap).

Several months ago, CMP referred to lower level riders as "smurfs." Many took offense. Now we are all having a bit of a go at smurf related things. Yes, as to the Lewis Carroll poem question :)
[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Snark_%28Lewis_Carroll%29&action=edit§ion=1)] The origin of the word
Martin Gardner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Gardner) mentions several combinations of words that have been suggested to be at the origin of the name: snail and shark, snake and shark, snarl and bark etc. No support for any of this can be found in Lewis Carroll's writings.
What Lewis Carroll asked the children
Lewis Carroll was of course asked repeatedly to explain the Snark. Gardner gives us five examples that are on record. In all of them, Carroll's answer is that he doesn't know himself, that he can't explain, etc. His most interesting answer: ...Some children are puzzled with it. Of course you know what a Snark is? If you do, please tell me...
Now, back to the little blue people. :D

I think there should be one all blue jump on every Novice cross country course. Maybe even Beginner novice too. Just the symbolism of the blue jump might be quite subtle. So that only those in the "know" would get it. We could start with some of those bright blue plastic barrels and work from there. Now that would be Smurfy!
Or we could paint smurf faces on the blue barrels and be blatant about it.
Here's a sticker we could use

King Oak Farm in Area 1 used to (and still may) have an all-blue panel and rail stadium jump. It was always the bogey jump on course, causing many refusals and knockdowns. I came away believing that horses don't see blue well.
But I love all of the other ideas in this thread, especially the subversive ones!

OK, send/post your smurfy creations for a stadium jump! I will run it by the Powers That Be at either Richland Park or (AHEM FLUTIE) Maui Jim. :D :D :D
This pathetic "Power That Be" for Maui Jim says GO FOR IT. We'd love it!!!

Ahhhh, Eqsiu, I love it!!! Now where can one get some creative plywood type person to create such a thing? I want to do it!! Any ideas on custom jump builders? I'll spring for the "wings"--any blue poles and standards would do fine. :)
Good thing I'm not riding at Maui Jim this year, hee hee--my young horse would probably freak at the sight of those things!
Flutie, if this comes to pass, could the jump be used at the AEC, also? :D I'll loan it to Lamplight for the duration, then shlep it somewhere else. WEG, anyone?

You know... I have looked and looked... and I cannot seem to find it... but I *know* I saw a picture somewhere of someone dressed as a Smurf for a Halloween hunter pace.
If one were to dress as a smurf and carry Eventer Smurf in his pocket for such an event, how many points would that earn?

If we have a blue Stadium jump for the lower levels at the AECs, it should only be used in the Beg Novice/Novice arena.
I love the idea.

Maybe we can send a smurf basket to CMP. The basket with handle would include a wedge of cheese, some mushrooms and a Smurf. HA! Of course, we would 'sign' it "Your Friends on COTH".

I am a proud smurf...who just happens to be riding a horse who is affectionately known as "smurf" around the barn (well, his name is actually Surf...for Surf Guitar...but that somehow morphed into Smurf :)). Between my great big Smurfie (17.3h) and the big blue trailer, we're very visible smurfs who've decided it's time to get in on the smurf shopping craze!
A fitting hat...to make us even easier to spot at events...

Wonder if they would make a Smurf jump for the Novice stadium ring at the AECs to sell of afterwards.
From their website they certainly look capable.

Even if we could get smurf wings and then blue/white planks would be cool. The Hi Tech jumps come from England and it takes a while to get them over the pond.
Yes, I will be at Queeny Park for the mini event. Hopefully I will have a Smurf by then to take a photo of. I'm thinking that the dark red coop on the starter course should be painted a Smurfy blue. I'm going for the work day tomorrow so I will take a look at it.

Deltawave is in the process of having a smurf jump made for Maui Jim and the AEC's. Why not coordinate with her? Good point about the Hi Tech jumps coming from England. It probably would take a long time.

I've got a stencil percolating, and a guy with a jigsaw waiting to Smurf. I will do the painting and finishing, and hope to have 2 sets of Smurfs ready by late June. They will be only cutouts, though, approximately 4 feet high and 2 feet wide. They still need to be fastened to an appropriate jump wing, if the venue in question could provide them. Along with Smurfy blue poles. :)
