I am in Ireland for the next few days and was wondering what channel the coverage of Badminton is on. I have checked the local listings and nothing...

I have heard from others that the coverage is really great, so any help would be appreciated.

Radio Badminton is fantastic!!! Wish Rolex had a similar program.
I have been listening to both dressage days, and the commentators are incredible. They seem to be teaching and evaluating during the tests, they are positive, give a great background of the horses and riders, etc.
It's almost as if you are listening to a dressage clinic.

Can't say more on how wonderful this service and radio team Radio Badminton has assembled. Also you can listen to interviews with riders, grooms, and officials.

Saturday they have a free web cast for the first 40 minutes, then you are charged per minute.

Also fun to listen to their commercials which don't come on very often, so it won't drive you nuts like the thousands of commercials when NBC broadcasts Rolex this weekend.

Sure miss 90 minutes of coverage on PBS several years ago vs
40 minutes from NBC in an hour format.

Go to the Badminton Horse Trials website for more information on Radio Badminton and Web broadcasts.

In Ireland you MAY be able to pick up BBCi which will have live coverage of xc all day from 11.00am until 5.00pm.

XC day is BBCi and BBC Sport Website http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_radio/4341486.stm

Sunday is BBC2 and BBC Sport Website

Good luck! If you have Freeview or Satellite it may help.

The XC on Sat afternoon is being shown on BBCi. In Ireland you need a Sky Digital subscription to get to get that, with the neccesary digibox and interactive remote etc.
The SJ and highlights/recap on Sunday is on BBC2, that is carried by most cable/satelite carriers.

The online interactive is only available to UK residents, so unless you are in the 6 counties of the island that are still part of the UK, then you won't be able to acces that.

There is nothing on the http://video.badminton-horse.co.uk/player site to say it is limited to UK only. It does not ask for a mainland address or UK only biling address for card payments if you want to extend for full coverage. Unlike Rolex which was USA ONLY.

There is a section to sign onto for 200 free credits to watch and this is a good way to try it - about 30 minutes of coverage. A friend in Eire has accessed it fine with no problems.

Dee Williams came off at the Shogun Hollow. Horse went in too big and she landed at the bottom. Horse was okay. She was taken off in an ambulance. It didn't look horrible, but it would be the kind of thing that they would want to make sure her neck/back were okay.

So says Radio Badminton. Horse and rider both fell (they are okay) but elminated. Did anyone sign up for the extended coverage at 5 cents per minute or are you just taking advantage of the 40 minutes of free viewing.

Could I get some help interpreting the fence results at Badminton? (http://www.badminton-horse.co.uk/results/2008_results/cross_country_fences.aspx)

Z = retired
F = fall
R = refusal/runout

What is H? There are some HZ's and some HFZ's and I'm curious as to the difference.

HF = Horse Fall Retire -- Not sure -- perhaps it is the way the scorekeepers are writing them down? I can only go on the one I saw.

Ooh, Coup de Coeur is coming home tired, tired, tired. This is what I don't like to see. The hors eis barely making it... Whew, he made it.

But that's the sort of chance I think should be investigated. Not good for the sport. Something should be made of it, if only to make the point that it was a chancy thing to do -- and not with the horse's interests at heart. And OT with a broken collarbone, too.

Then the commentator says, "He's able to walk, he's fine...just a bit unfit."

And she was talkign about the rider, not the horse. What about the poor horse!

Did anyone see that scarey young french rider early on? oh my god..he absolutely fair caned it around without checking for the fences, and even the commentators mentioned dangerous riding!

If anyone has oodles of cash and is looking to buy a 4* horse..buy his. If it can still keep running and jumping with its ears pricked after being put into so many impossible distances, then imagine what it can do with a better ride!

Edited to add...check out Zara loading up and arriving at badminton:

This particular rider excels at running his horses into the ground as well as at crashing them into fences. Watch last year's Burghley. Brilliant bit of riding, if you subscribe to the theory that you learn so well from your mistakes that you can make exactly the same mistake again perfectly.

I feel bad for the horses he rides and I really wonder why people trust him with their horses.

May. 4, 2008, 12:30 AM
Well, he was set down by one of his horses recently. :) He was riding with a broken collarbone, the announcers were talking about it.

I think you're referring to his recent punishment for threatening another rider. Horse & Hound report (http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/competitionnews/391/198564.html).

It seems he's a menace to both horses and humans in our sport.

Last year at Badminton, I was reclining on the grass in front of the Jumbotron and he and one of his friends sat down next to me. I got an inadvertent earful of what he really thinks. I concluded he must have another side that he shows to his owners and sponsors.

I believe that was Paul Tapner (and his saint of a horse Inonothing). Apparently he was a bit miffed that the pesky refusal he had would compromise his chances of making the Aussie Olympic team.

I would think that acting like a child having a temper tamtrum would be far more damaging, but who knows, perhaps the Aussie eventing scene needs a "John McEnroe" type character.

The French rider was Pierre DuBois. His horse is also a saint. I really thought he was going to get pulled off course for dangerous riding. It was his first time around Badminton and the commentator remarked that he hoped he learned something his ride. Just about every fence he took was described as the way NOT to ride the fence. He is a brave young rider but I hope he grows some good common sense to go with his bravery.

Zara's first ride Glenuck was absolutley stuffed from about 8 fences from home. He really hit the wall and looked dead on his legs. It was agonising to watch. And very kind horse who kept going for his rider.

Interestingly the commentary team said "she did well to nurse him home", yet later riders who had obviously tired horses and kept going (some not so weary as Glenbuck) were heavily criticised for carrying on. Now there's a surprise!!!

Both her horses passed this mornings trot up though.

IfWishesWereHorses
May. 4, 2008, 06:34 AM
Glenbuck is a kiwi horse. He was produced in NZ by Paul O'Brien (blyth's partner) through to winning a CCI* before being sold to Sharelle Duke.

Sharelle was tragically killed in an eventing accident last year (I think it was last year?) and after her death the horse was given to Zara to ride.

He jumps so big over everything its almost like used his energy up in his jumping efforts.

It was a very exciting finish and well deserved to Nicholas Touzaint and Hildago. Lucy W. and Shabrak were fabulous too.

I know there was a lot of discussion on the COTH BB of riders pushing on very tired horses and many close calls which did not make for enjoyable XC viewing. But just wanted to note N.T. did right by his horse on XC day which cost him time penaties but in the end it paid off on SJ day:

Quote Nicholas Touzaint after XC Day from H&H :

Nicolas took the lead after adding just 4.8 time-penalties to his dressage score with last year's Pau winner Hildago De L'Ile.

"I saw the other riders go, but I stuck to my ideas and it went more or less as planned," said Nicolas. "My horse needed to breathe in the eighth minute, I just steadied his canter and he finished in good shape and was jumping well."

Two perhaps stupid questions about the results posted in the link immediately above:

1) Why are some people listed as Mr., Miss or Mrs., but others with just first and last names?

2) Why are most of the people who withdrew in or before show jumping given final placings -- they didn't finish, after all -- while one of the riders who withdrew in or before SJ was not given a final placing?

1) I think the riders who aren't British are listed by their names, rather than as Ms... or Mr....

2) Not sure about that- could be just a listing error on the site.

I only saw the short coverage that the BBC showed, so I didn't get to see all of the riders go.

I think a couple had lameness problems, some had run outs/sticky jumps and didn't feel like it was worth going on.

Tired horses- the time was tight IMO. They were having to move to get near to it.
