View Full Version : Who will go to KY in June for the Safety Summit?
FlightCheck

We're all voicing our opinions here, there, and everywhere (as well we should).
So, who among us will be in KY? I've had the misfortune to be present at way too many of the crashes, and I want to be "part of the solution".
Bensmom and I will be driving up from Florida, along with a friend we have converted to "the dark side".

I can't make it (Wedding of the Century that weekend ), but I think the boss is very likely to go out. We have a client who wrote D and K a fantastic letter with some great insight that I would LOVE to go and maybe get involved with the safety committee as I think he has a very interesting way of thinking that might be useful...sadly, he's entered in Rubicon...so I don't know what he'll do.

I'll be there in full force! Can't wait to see the turnout and possibly get some of our ideas heard. If the eventing community can truly work together on this one, we will certaintly prevail! We are a strong willed bunch, that we all know. We will find a way to help our beloved sport out of the hole that it has fallen into.

I'll be there.
Was saving my miles for a trip with my family, but this seems to be a better use.
I am planning to pitch the "CPR/First Aid for Equestrians" course. Yeah, it's more of a grass roots effort, but I think it could still make a difference in our sport.

It would be great if they set up a webinar for those of us that can't be there in person. I would even pay to be on line in an effort to divert cost. Another plus side to this alternative for those of us a distance away is that USEA might be able to count these as energy savings points. Go green USEA!!

It should be easy enough to set up a Webex. I'm sure they provide one time services like that for a cost. And the meeting details could be linked to the USEA site.
To keep some sanity, it might need to be less interactive than a normal small group type of webinar. And unless some careful thought about phone placement and microphones in the room, every point would have to be repeated by someone with/near a microphone.
Someone needs to be monitoring the chat dialog of course so people attending thru their computers could post questions to the chat. Attending and participating in Webinars takes practise as well as very good meeting manners. :D I find the people 'in the room' can get going gangbusters and forget to think about whether they can be heard or are identifying themselves properly to people attending long distance.
I, for one, would prefer to do that vs. attending in person but I am trying to see if I can arrange time away from home to attend.

p.s. It will need to be very well organized/facilitated in order to get people'e inputs in an efficient manner but also reach the point of some conclusions and actions. I am sure the USEA/USEF is planning it carefully. Many people are probably mentally preparing what they will say but it may be much more important to be ready to listen with an open mind.

A friend, whose daughter competes, and I are trying to make arrangements to be there.
I believe a strong turnout is really needed to re-inforce the urgency of the situation as well as to convey participants' desire to be part of the solution, regardless of level/background.
Also, I don't mean to sound cynical, but -- if the POWERS THAT BE extend the invitation to everyone, but there is a low attendance, THEY can fall back on the excuse that "WE gave everyone a chance to participate, but in that absence, WE decided to ......"

John Staples will be going. We are going to prepare a presentation of our speed work. Based on our test at Greenwood, the GPS watches are going to provide a HUGE amount of data and open up some new correlations to what safe riding is.
can someone make sure Denny's ideas are presented, see also his comments on speed. Posts 211 and 212, Denny responds in 212. Of course you might want to give Denny the heads up:
Denny's suggestions meanwhile are quick and easy and a complete no brainer (CDs should already KNOW this):

For many of us, the trip won't be cheap and we will probably have to give up other things we had planned to do this summer to be able to afford to make the trip.
What a fantastic example of eventers truly putting their money where their concerns are :) Bravo to the leadership for making it an open forum and bravo to all the membership who will be rearranging things in their lives to be able to go. :)

Discounted room rates are now available at the Radisson Hotel! Call them directly at 859-231-9000 and request the USEF Safety Summit rate.
This hotel is connected to the Hyatt (the sold out host hotel) by a skywalk and has a complimentary shuttle service to the airport - so no need for a car if you are flying in.
I got a great rate on a good flight - and there still look to be some available.
So - who else is coming again?

Hey, Gnep has built and tested the collapseable table we designed. We need to get it a ride from the Colorado Horse Park to KY for the summit. It is an example of how fences can be built to be safe yet affordable. Will anybody around be able to do that? It is a full preliminary sized, working fence. Gnep is bringing it from his shop to COHP. The table is designed only to collapse when the face is struck.

I'm wondering if those planning to attend are also planning to bring materials, documents, handouts, whatever with you?
I got to wondering this, in part, because I would assume that a review of who has already done what would be a part of the program (I just read the Dutch report on cardboard poles). I'm assuming there won't be any transcripts, but do you suppose someone will have a laptop and be taking notes for public consumption? Listing the ideas and comments that come up, taking census?
I know that some folks have new designs for jumps. Will such designs, including those of others, be presented? And what about the statistics? Do you suppose there will be a review of what descriptive data already exists? And what about breakout groups (I think I heard than mentioned)? What subjects would you expect those groups to focus on (like jump design, course design, ride responsibility, education, public relations, sudden traumatic syndromes, financing solutions, data collection and statistical inferences, etc., etc.)?
I guess what I'm asking is, if you are going, what are you expecting?

May. 13, 2008, 03:18 PM
pwynn,
I so agree!!!! I would hope this will be more along the lines of a real conference and not just a meet and greet. I would want breakout groups. I want topics to include funding, future Safety Reviews, current status of studies and ongoing work.
John Staples and I are preparing a presentation on the speed study. As I mentioned we will be sending a working prototype of a collapseable table.

When I spoke to Ilse yesterday about the special hotel rates, she specifically mentioned that if I had a presentation, she needed it pretty soon in PowerPoint format. They will be providing these for everyone - I believe - and why they are asking for the $35 per person to help cover such costs.
The Agenda is a little more specific now, but not by too much. Howfully we will know more as it gets closer.

Send her what you have and let her direct you whomever else you need to speak with to get put specifically on the agenda.
After looking at the FEI link, it seems that the format for FEI presentations for the "Safety Committee" is Power Point. You have seen those, right?

USEF/USEA to Hold Eventing Safety Summit in Lexington, KY
Summit will explore ways to make sport of eventing safer
In the wake of several serious accidents to riders and horses in eventing over the last few months, USEF President David O'Connor and USEA President Kevin Baumgardner have announced that there will be a Safety Summit held in Lexington, KY on June 7-8, 2008. (You can view a copy of their statement at http://www.usef.org/_IFrames/newsdisplay/viewpr.aspx?id=3054 (http://www.usef.org/_IFrames/newsdisplay/viewpr.aspx?id=3054).)
The goal of the Summit is to bring together all those concerned about the sport - riders, coaches, veterinarians, course designers, fans - in a quest to better understand what might be contributing to these accidents and to identify and agree on steps that can be taken to better protect horses and riders.
The Summit will be organized around four special discussion topics::
Qualifications (includes horse and rider qualifications, professional/amateur qualifications, FEI/national qualifications, proposals regarding loss or downgrading of qualifications, data collection and tracking, etc.)
Course Design (includes frangible/deformable jump design, prevention of rotational falls, optimal speeds, distances, format, data collection, etc.)
Education (includes rider and instructor responsibility, officials' responsibility, prevention, identifying and handling of dangerous riding, ICP, etc.)
Veterinary/Medical (includes short/long format, pulmonary hemorrhage, conditioning of horses, prevention of horse and rider injury, rider fitness, concussion management, data collection, etc.)
The Summit is open to everyone and we invite all to attend. You can register at https://www.usef.org/_AUAIFrames/SafetySummit/Default.aspx (https://www.usef.org/_AUAIFrames/SafetySummit/Default.aspx). Please visit www.usef.org (http://www.usef.org/) or www.useventing.com (http://www.useventing.com/) for more information.
All attendees are encouraged to submit ideas for improving safety. If your ideas are in formal presentation form (PowerPoint), please submit them prior to the Summit so that they can be included in the master presentations that will be shown at the beginning of each discussion group.
There is a room block for the USEF Safety Summit at the Radisson Hotel in Lexington, KY. Please call: 859.231.9000 for reservations.
Tentative schedule:
Saturday June 7:
8.30-9.30: Opening Assembly
9.45-12.00: Morning Group Discussions
12.15-1.00: Lunch
1.00-5.00: Afternoon Group Discussions
Sunday June 8:
9.30-12.00: Closing Assembly
We recognize that everyone in our sport is concerned with the safety of both riders and horses. So please join us with your best ideas at the Safety Summit.

Wanted to bring this back to the top of the list again.
A friend and I are making the 7-hr drive together. She has a hybrid, so maybe the gas cost won't be too bad! :) It's a shame that the date conflicts with Area III championships.
Is it just me, or does it seem like the weekend can't get here fast enough? If nothing else, the subjects and feelings on this forum lately sure seem to prove that point. [I must admit I am somewhat concerned that, based on the tone here, it could turn into a "free for all" without enough constructive and thoughtful sharing and listening.]
I certainly understand any well-studied changes will take time, so my best hope is we all leave with the belief that truly effective and efficient plans are going to be implemented as quickly as is feasible.
So, who is going? When you registered, how did you "rank" the topics? And what are your hopes?

I'd love to go , but, it takes so much advanced preparation for me to go anywhere; a vehicle which can carry my chair; t extra meds to take with me, plus now, extra oxygen; It's a lot to deal with ; and takes someone to pull it it all together, deal with the motel, accessible nonsmoking room, with a shower chair, if possible;and someone who, does not mind loading, unloading and pushing my manual chair; my powerchair gives me more freedom,/mobiity, but require s a van with lift ; so, if some good soul can put it all together;Neil,is unfortunately "out" of the horse business, as he calls it; though he will take me to the cdcta horse trials where I apprentice in showjumping;so, I will have to rely on everyones'reports from the summit;and at the cdcta horse trials, , please remember to wait for the whistle, and jump clean!

Would anyone like to car pool? I am taking friday and Monday off, but could return Sunday pm. leaving from Richmond, va. Can also make a stop at the Va horse Center and pick up someone from No Va if you are coming that way. Would like to leave Friday after am feed, so that i can get in early enough to do something in town. Would be happy to stay and leave Monday am as well. Just depends on what people going with want to do. i really don't want to drive alone.

Does anyone have any ideas how many people are attending? I'm driving down from the St. Louis area tomorrow morning with Zagafi. Looking forward to meeting everyone.
Do we have any plans for a COTH get together on Saturday night? If not, I'm sure the main hotel has a lounge/bar. Maybe there right after the summit lets out for the night?

Hey, R6K!
I was wondering the same thing. I'm coming with a friend, and we are staying at the Radisson.
The agenda says Saturday ends at 5pm, and ABC begins coverage for the Belmont at 5:30pm (I'd think post time is probably around 6pm ET). So, we'll be making a dash for a hotel bar with a big TV to watch the race. :)
I'd love to finish a great day of meetings with a safe Belmont run and a Triple Crown winner (particularly while being in Lexington)! :D
It might convince me that our karma is about to turn!:yes:

Sounds like a plan to me. Radisson Bar, after we end for the day, cocktails and cheering and comradity!
Hopefully we'll have name tags so we can figure out who is who!

Can you imagine all the people from the meeting trying to jam into a small hotel bar? It may be the inevitable.
Look forward to putting some faces to this bulletin board.

I have signed up to come--but we had horrible storms tonight and I've got property damage that is going to need attention tomorrow or I'll lose the siding on the west side of my barn. It even blew a horse trailer off it's blocks and moved it about 3 feet in spite of having the wheels chocked! We got off lucky--80 MPH shear winds all around us, blew two semi's off the road just east and just west of us. Lots of barns and trees down in the immediate area. My hay guy had a barn collapse on his farm equipment on the road that is my north boundry.
Scary stuff....
