Kudos to Oldenburg breeder Ann Kitchel of Vermont, who has now bred TWO stallions to be licensed by a major European WB registry. Last fall, a Kitchel-bred colt by Don Larino / Santander was licensed in Oldenburg (and promptly sold to sponsors of Anky and other top Dutch riders). Today, also in Oldenburg, Ann’s Stedinger / Donnerschwee colt was licensed!
Congrats to Ann for these wonderful successes! You go, girl! :D

Wow, congratulations to Ms. Kitchel!
I have a Stedinger/Hohenstein on the way so I am very curious to see pics of her boy.

Almost 200 views but only three people besides me feel this warrants an "Atta girl!"? Is it because the colt wasn't bred/born in North America? Have we come to that, where we only believe that a breeder's achievements are noteworthy if their foals are born on U.S. or Canadian soil?
Folks, this is a HUGE accomplishment! There are approximately 2000 colts born in Oldenburg each year, of which maybe 30 or 40 will eventually get licensed. Many breeders have been trying their entire lives to breed even ONE licensed colt. To have bred TWO is really quite special, and very, very deserving of accolades. :D:yes:

first time i've had a chance to look at this thread, but I'll add my "atta girl"! :-) That IS a huge accomplishment!!! Congratulations! (and who cares where the animal was bred? she is an American, and it still took HER eye and breeding knowledge to produce two stallions of that caliber!)

I don't know if there is a real secret to her success. Maybe she will come on here and tells us. But I imagine that the following factors played a part.
1) She is a long time breeder and horsewoman with a very good eye.
2) She has a very good understanding of bloodlines.
3) She has made regular trips to Germany over the years to continue to develop her eye.
4) She has kept broodmares in Germany for a while now, and has become familiar with how they and their families produce.
5) She uses very good mares.
6) She makes very wise stallion selections. ;)
For those that are interested - there is a pic of the Stedinger /Donnerschwee stallion at

I would surmise she also knows the bloodlines that GOV likes ALOT.
An S and D line stallion has a good chance of being looked at, just my guess.
It'd be great to have her share her insights. Does she participate here?

I think perhaps these lines are well-regarded for a reason.

Yes, but remember that there are over 4000 active breeders in Oldenburg. If at least half of them are primarily dressage breeders, then I imagine that a great many of them have used the S and D lines, probably many times over. Just taking a rough guess, I would think that there are probably at least 500 colts born in Oldenburg each year that have either Donnerhall or Sandro Hit in the pedigree, so the odds of breeding a licensed stallion are still very, very slim. To have bred TWO of them within a one year period is quite remarkable.

Were the 2 stallions out of the same mare?

May. 4, 2008, 07:35 AM
No - as I stated in the original post - one was out of a Santander mare, the other out of a Donnerschwee mare.

Congratulations, Ann!
I'm pretty sure that Ann had a mare that made it to the brilliant ring last year, that was out of the same Donnerschwee mare. Ann has a super eye.
