View Full Version : Who's your Derby horse (birth year)

Who's your Derby horse? I was born in 1977 so my Derby Horse is

Seattle Slew!! :D (he's also my Preakness and Belmont horse)

Another thing to do is go to Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page and put you birth month and day in the search box. It will come up with events that happened that day.

Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes on my B-day (but it's in 1973)
I also share a birthday with Johnny Depp (Swoon) and Michael J. Fox.

Since War Pass is out :( I'm going to go with the filly! :D

I was born the day before the Preakness the year of the great Affirmed and Alydar battle. I think we are due another triple crown winner sometime soon. That was the last time that a horse won the triple crown and it was 30 year ago this year.

Count Turf is "mine" - by Count Fleet by Reigh Count, 3 generations of Derby winners. Only one other threesome did that: Needles by Ponder by Pensive.

Majestic Prince.

One who, alas, should not have run in the Belmont, IMHO. Great horse, but was 1 step below TC winner great, and he was not doing well physically after the Derby and Preakness.

Trained by Johnny Longdon, only man I believe to ever both ride and train a Derby winner (Count Fleet - one of my all-time favorites - in 1943; Majestic Prince in 1969).

I believe I've also read that Johnny as a kid and his Mom missed the boat on the Titanic. He was not only good, but also lucky. :)

I googled the summer Olympics in LA, and Joe Fargis won Ind SJ and the American Team won gold as well!

YOU'RE old - I'm not even going there with mine!

But, noticing the speeds of the Derby. Anybody care to comment that in l941 Whirlaway was the first horse to go 2:01 and 2/5.
Since then no horse has gone under the 2:01 mark - why, in the light of breeding the best to the best and hoping for the best, in light of modern nutrition, scientific training, etc?

Since then no horse has gone under the 2:01 mark... For shame, for shame! How could you forget that in 1973, Secretariat ran the KY Derby in a record 1:59 2/5 which still stands?!

Unless another freak like Secretariat comes along, I think thoroughbreds are about as fast as they're gonna get.

Oh, and mine is Dust Commander.

Along with Secretariat, don't forget Monarchos with his sub-two minute derby. ;)

Foxtrot's-- I'm not sure where you got that fact. In the past decade, Barbaro, Funny Cide, War Emblem, Monarchos, and Fusaichi Pegasus were all faster than Whirlaway's 2:01.4.

I can remember when the Derby was a real race where they went 1½m..... uphill, both ways, in the snow, and that was after pulling a milk cart all morning.
We didn't have no OTBs or online wagering back then either. No siree, we used carrier pigeons. Had the superfecta in Ben Brush's Derby, but some asshole shot my pigeon over Arkansas.

My derby horse is Genuine Risk

"Genuine Risk" (foaled February 15, 1977 in Kentucky) is a chestnut mare who won the 1980 Kentucky Derby and was the first filly to ever finish in the money in all three U.S. Triple Crown races. Ridden by Jacinto Vasquez, she finished second in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. At present she is the oldest living winner of the Kentucky Derby.

She was only the second filly to win the Kentucky Derby, the first being "Regret", 65 years earlier in 1915.

Genuine Risk's first mate was the Triple Crown winner "Secretariat" in 1982. The resulting foal expected in 1983 would have made history as the first offspring of two Kentucky Derby winners. Unfortunately, Genuine Risk delivered a stillborn colt. Though scheduled to be bred to "Nijinsky II" in 1983, she was rebred to Secretariat without success. Over the next 17 years, she produced only two living foals: "Genuine Reward", a chestnut colt by Rahy in 1993, and "Count Our Blessing", a chestnut colt by Chief Honcho foaled in 1996. Neither colt ever raced. "Genuine Reward" went to stud in 1997 and currently stands in Wyoming, but "Count Our Blessing" was eventually gelded.

Genuine Risk was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1986. In the Blood-Horse magazine List of the Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century, she was ranked #91.

She was retired from breeding in 2000 after losing several foals or failing to conceive. She is stabled at the Firestone's Newstead Farm in Upperville, Virginia.
