I like the idea of the highlights of small yellow and red ribbons---so either way I think we are ok if you added those for the MCTA event. I don't have time to do that this am for our event in NC---but I would like to see what people want to charge for donations to safety equiptment. Maybe this weekend we can donate the ribbons and get people aware---then once we have a set ribbon format get a dollar donation per ribbon at each event in the upcoming weeks?

Ok...most of us who are leaving for events this weekend will leave tomorrow---so that only leaves us today to figure out the colors for the ribbon.

VOTE NOW. Let's close the poll by 3 pm EST b/c we have to let people get to the store after work and then make the ribbons.

Details of thoughts here....

Why didn't we do this yesterday?!

Okay, okay, I will check at the last possible moment from my cell phone at Walmart to see what the final decison is. BUT, I'm sorry, I am not doing anything that involves glue guns, or you will have to have a special ribbon color for ME and my third degree burns. (and possibly my fingers full of pin holes!)

Ditto for the glue gun or anything complicated!!
Lets just pick one color.... :D

I voted Yellow. I know it means other things to other people but it always will.

I chose Yellow because I have Hope that our great sport will survive this and become greater as a result.

I am leaving for the morning/afternoon. I will check in at 3 and we will know the color winner at that time.

I know we all have a personal favorite but I really feel that we should go w/what all of the Eventers on this board pick. It will show that we are of one mind and can get it done. So EVERYONE VOTE!

If we go our own way on a simple thing like a color choice...then it will show the rest of the horse world that we don't know how to work together.

(Don't read into the above statement---I just want us to be unified with our color(s) so that the public knows that we can work together to fix our sport)

Cheers!

I voted orange, FLAME orange. Danger! Our sport is in danger! And those who wear orange are conscious of danger and thinking about being safer.

But I'm toying with a big Smurf patch for my saddle pad, too. :p

No vote from me. I detest these ribbon/wristband things, I'd rather show my support with my voice and ~real~ actions and donations. The ribbons & wrisbands have gotten to be so ubiquitous that I don't even see them anymore, they're just meaningless decorations.

I voted red....

when looking at the meaning of colors I found that the color red meant more than just courage...it represents hardiness (we eventers will persevere!) as well as warning (so we will never forget).

and Bosox you are right -a show of unity would be awesome!

Also -what about this....if someone on COTH is crafty and willing (I would help) could we sell ribbons and donate the proceeds to buy frangible pins?

RiverBendPol

I vote for orange, red AND yellow. That way there is no confusion with war heroes nor highway flagmen :). Here's what you do, couldn't be easier nor cheaper. Buy 4-5" of each ribbon-I'd get 1/2" wide satin. Hold them all together and tie them in a knot onto the non-pointy part of a safety pin. Pin it onto the bottom of the back of your vest for XC or your saddle pad for D and SJ.
Oh gosh, I love it. I'm going to put one on my stuff and I'm not even competing him this year (BECAUSE HE'S ONLY 5)

Except the person who started this whole idea emailed Kevin B. et al and said yellow.

Sooooo, since we already have 2 disparate colors, I think we're fine to go with majority.

However, whatever the group consensus is... I will support solidarity..

Im with the group as well, I will go wherever the pack goes:lol:

The only issue I really have is some people may not read COTH and may read Amys letter...Thus leading them to wear Red.

I also think we need to make something OUR color, Thus probably making us use at least 2. I know it will be a pain in the a$$. But its a once and done deal. If we put the time in to do this right now there will be no mass confusion later.

There have been so many color options suggested, I hope we can pull together and really represent this as a team.

Hey, it's supposed to be ALL ABOUT THE HORSES -- make it yellow for hope (or any other color you choose) and put it on your bridle...not your vest or your helmet...

At a minimum, do something to show your solidarity with those courageous and loyal kind-hearted souls that lost their lives at Rolex and Tallahassee...who really cares what the color is (horses are color-blind anyway) or who got published on the USEA website or what the ribbon colors means or doesn't mean...it's supposed to be your very personal 'sign' showing your solidarity with those brave, loyal, and kind-hearted equine partners who didn't have a say about the situation their riders put them in but 'exploded' their hearts and sacrificed their lives for their riders -- not only those who were killed at Rolex and Tallahassee but those closer to us that we ride, jump, and soley depend on to keep us safe under saddle...let's make it about THEM this weekend and every other weekend this season - they are the silent and true HEROES of the eventing community !!!! and it's not about you, your reputation, your level of expertise, or your Olympic aspirations that count out on the xcntry course, it's about the partnership and level of trust you have with your mount -- that's all there is and that's what eventing is all about !!!!

Of course it's about the horses, but the idea has been expanded to encompass several ideas... those of remembrance, courage (per CUONXC's letter), and hope. It's not about loss of your basic idea - it's about expanding your basic idea.

I personally am for a red/orange/yellow combination, which I feel would encompass all of these ideas, thereby remembering the past, showing commitment to change, and looking to the future.

If anyone did not see my spinoff, I am willing to make these ribbons (whatever is decided, single color or multi) and mail them to anyone who wants them. They won't be done by this weekend, obviously, but I hope that within the next couple weeks I can have a good handle on an inital count. PM me if you are interested, and please see my spinoff thread for more info.

I don't think it matters. I suppose it's orange, though now that Amy Lopez's letter is on USEA with her red ribbon tribute I wonder what colors we'll see. Heck, even if people just say "what are all those colored ribbons for?" it will serve it's purpose.

Kaytaz86
May. 2, 2008, 07:19 AM
I'm wondering if we need to start another poll...with "orange" and "red/orange/yellow" being the only two options--since they seem to be the most popular. Although I think caution and safety is IMPERITIVE, I think that having courage to go on is just as important. And without a little courage and kicking on, no one is going to make it around another course. Not saying reckless, balls to the walls, just the guts to move forward, be it on course, or keeping this sport going. That courage is what makes eventers eventers-maybe we all need a little caution and common sense to top it off, but courage is what we are known for, and I would hate to see it go the way of the long format!
I think that hope is also an important factor, for the future, for the horses, for the riders, for our sport. So--that's my vote! I won't hijack and create another conflicting poll, with the two "popular" answers, but I wonder if that is the way to go at this point...OP?
All the best to those of you headed off to events this weekend--though I'm not competing this year, I will get colors, and try to get others going on it!

Ok- I dont know if it really matters on color

I did make about 50 last night- I purchased a thick orange ribbon about an 1/2 inch thick, and also added red and yellow that are very thin. So Orange is the main color and the red and yellow are highlights

I first folded the orange..( like the breast cancer and save or troops loop ) and then paired the yellow and red together and made that bow the same way only smaller. I then used fabric glue and glued them in the center of the x over loop.

They look pretty nice, not sure how they will hold up but I tried !!!

I will be at MCTA this weekend for anyone who would like one.

Are we selling these with the proceeds donated for pins ?? I was also thinking of attaching a small pledge to the ribbon( something along the lines of Amys letter) ...especially if we do decide to sell them. What do you think ??

Last night, just as I sat down to start, my bf came in and asked what I was doing...

and when I explained, he asked whether the horses were supposed to beware of Agent Orange on XC.

So I made red/orange/yellow ones instead. They look very nice and bright, anyway. I made about 200, and my friend Brooke is supposed to drop them by the secretary's stand at MCTA this afternoon. I'll make as many more as I can tonight, and take them when I go to jump judge tomorrow.

This was a wonderful Idea and I hope it doesnt fall to the way side. I agree that the color doesnt matter, But I also dont think that Orange should be the ONLY color.... Its about so much more than safety and I think all of these things need to be represented.

I choose to do the majority Orange and small red and yellow, Orange is still my main color on mine. But we never really specified how they were to be made, tied, bowed etc. In all there all going to be differant. Until we can get a SOLID plan we can do another poll and be exact on how they will be tied and the color(s).

I only made measly 40 or so but plan on making more tonight. If there not suitable no big deal I spent 6$ on the ribbon and the glue. Just wanted to contribute what I could. Besides the orange will clash with my chessie

How did the rest of you secure yours...thought about bringing them to work and "reinforcing" the glue with a staple:lol: figured it would look a little ghetto !!!!
