I'm *awful* about naming. My yearling still goes by her mother's name if not "Girl." My colt is just "Handsome Boy" or "Special" or "Sweetie," etc. I do have a registered name in mind for the filly but need it to become available.

I don't see inspiration hitting me in the head anytime soon.

I occasionally will have a foal that I just canNOT find a name that fits.... I'm having trouble with both of my colts this year. I've had some FANTASTIC suggestions, but for some reason, nothing is sticking!

The worst thing for me is when I start calling a pony something in jest, and then it sticks. Thus the filly that I call "Precious" this year, even though she already has a perfectly lovely name! (And she KNOWS her name is Precious and comes when she is called! LOL)

My dad is awful about names NONE get nicknames (unless you call 'Ol Lad or Old Lady a nickname ) they all get their full names from him. Me I have so many nicks for my ponies - some have stuck some are just for how the pony is behaving/how I'm feeling at the moment :)

It wasn't until I read your post that I remembered the nickname for my mare when she was a foal. It's a good thing that "Thee Leetle Sheet" finally gave way to her current name. (it gets funnier when you say it fast with a fake french accent)

Like any training, just be consistent. That goes for the human and the horse.

HA! I nicknamed my clients uber valuable Nat. Show Horse foal by a $7500 stud fee stallion "Moose." I'm not sure they appreciate the name as much as I do! He's huge and he's just like a little moose.

I just had one foal an hour ago....a Spanish Mustang appy colt. I may have to name this one Twister after yesterday's "fun" here in Suffolk.

Usually though I'm not easily inspired and names do not come to me well. I call them little "man" or "girl" or something without imagination at all.

Funny, but all of my horses, dogs, cats, etc. have nicknames...several per critter, in some cases...except Amos. Amos has always been just Amos. I don't know why that is...it's not as if I don't love him enough to give him another name! He's just such an Amos, he doesn't need to be called anything else, I guess!:D

My yearling filly started out as Teacup for her tiny muzzle and delicate face. It progressed to Filly or Baby as she grew and now it has stuck, sometimes known as Filly Dilly. She does have a real name, not registered yet..... It suits her, but Filly just seems so much easier and she is still such a Dilly of a Filly...hahaa..she's a character. When she is bad, she is Bad Baby..

I like to have the barn name be related to the registered name. This usually isn't too much of an issue but last year I just couldn't decide on a name for my colt. I called him "Sweetie" and such things but around the farm he was referred to as "NoName" or "Little Mr. No Name." Didn't decide on his name until he was almost 5 months old.

he he, I sometimes do to!

My client had a super cute UB 40 filly last year, and I suggested Catalina. Well, my friends farm name is cat/lion related so she named her Cats Meow. Well, I ended up buying half.....but I find myself still calling her Catalina, but mostly just "filly".

Oh, well, she responds either way....

My SO is a stickler for wanting the barn and registered name to match or be related. So for the most part, I stick with the agreed upon name, but there are days when they earn "other" names ;)

All of my animals have nicknames, and nicknames for the nicknames, and nicknames for the nicknames of the nicknames.

For example:
Creme de Cacao is Hannah. Hannah Bean. Bean. Beanie. Miss Bean.

I don't :P
I hate nicknames. (maybe because I hate when people shorten my name too :P)
Nope, the barn name is related to the registered name, if not actually the registered name

Yep - we have Cleio who gets called Baby C as at the time we had 4 other mares and fillies begining with the letter C and she was the baby
Cosmopolitan is called Lola, and thats because I was thinking of Cosmo - Cos - Cos lettuce - Lollo rosso lettuce - Lola. Yep I'm weird!!
Hurakan got shorten to Khan and became Gengis Khan and then got called Gengis.

I have NO clue why, but my dog and horses are all referred to as bugs! My dogs name is Prada, call her PD, so PD Bug. One horse is Suki Bug, another is DeDe Bug (actual name is Dallas), and another is Duna Bug...not sure where or how that got incorporated!

I do...
My horse goes by: Charlie, Kid, Bean
My mom's horse: Scotty, Boo, Scotters, Big Man, Oaf
My training project: Elle, Ellemae, Pony, Pretty pony, Little Miss, Sweetheart

If I am ever referring to them I do registered name or barn name or show name -- most of the other things just slip out when I say hi/bye during chore time or when I'm grooming/talking to them while riding.

It seems every foal we have gets the name Cumquat until I think of a name. I don't know when that started probably about 20 years ago. I really try to give them registered names that will follow to good nicknames.

Dubonnet aka Doobie
Dancehall Romeo aka Romeo or Rodeo on any given day
Accord de Moi aka Cordi but my trainers sister who broke her calls her Cordelia
Pfingsten aka Baby Fing or Bad Fing (yearling can you tell)
Midsummers Knight aka Knight
Soft Hits (I did not name her) so I call her Kiki
