So, it has begun and there is a thread on the Jog- but now...it's gonna start for real tomorrow!!!!
It is going to be a fantastic dressage day- I will not be moving, I assure you!
First Dressage ride...Teddy at 10:00.
Mazetto, who belongs to the Brennans (see thread abt their fantastic fund that they started for ICP and USPC) goes 3rd- I am going to be pretty excited to see that ride!
Then Dun to a T- Right after Mr. Big- and then the young rider on Acapulco Jazz- and Mike Winter- oh then....Can you tell? Excited!
I am also really excited to See Hollywood go, too! She had a great story in the COTH last month (I think?) and has had a great season.
And this is just the first day! WOW!

I got there too late yesterday to see the jog, but BensMom and crew took photos.
We are the only people who could get a hotel room in a DRY COUNTY for Rolex :)

So, anyone watching the tests? Thoughts? Stephen had a lovely test overall except for a couple blips in lead changes...anyone notice the errors that Boyd received? I didnt notice and Kerry never mentioned them announcing the test...he had a lovely ride on his young horse I thought, and of course what a gorgeous horse Woodburn is!!! I hated it for Laine that Mazetto was so tense...am really pulling for them after reading the article in Chron, was so moved to see the connection with Eleanor...they are my sentimental favorites this weekend...

What's the weather looking like? We are due to rain here (SW of Lexington) until Sunday night. I looked at the Lexington forecast, and it looks like thunderstorm possibilities up there also.
What does Rolex do when a huge thunderstorm comes through? Surely they bring everyone under cover and wait it out.
Every time I've been to Rolex it has rained buckets, but not been thunderstorm weather.

Apr. 24, 2008, 01:19 PM
max..Jon had a decent test, looked a bit tense, I would say the atmosphere had a bit to do with it, lovely trot work, had a little hicup in the halt to rein back, then the canter work was ok but you could see that Jon was really having to hold him together...it seemed to me it was simply the atmosphere, but all and all it was nice especially for such a short partnership...Dun is a lovely looking guy that is for sure!!

I did a little data analysis (posted on a different thread) and of the 45 horses entered Wednesday morning, there are:
22 TBs (3 Aussie, 2 UK, 1 CAN, 1 Irish, 1 Russian, 3 "TB," and 11 US)
10 ISHs (1 Aussie and 9 "ISH")
The rest included everything from a Mexican QH to a Swedish WB to an American Sport Pony.

Hello;
I hope those who are watching the PPV webcast are enjoying it. I'm Bob Hughes the TV producer at Rolex.
I hope our coverage is meeting your expectations. We're all looking forward here to the rest of the event but most importantly Cross Country on Saturday. It is the most difficult thing we cover each year and we sincerely look forward to the challenge.
I'm interested to hear your thoughts.

Yeah... I just read that. Bummer, being from CA as well, and having to retire partway around XC her last time at Rolex, I was hoping she'd do well this year.
She was competing a bunch of horses here in CA at Twin Rivers last weekend and made the trek out to KY this week - maybe that was rough on the big guy's system?

I saw her at Twin as well, but Mac had already flown out so the trip should have been easier on him then driving. But who knows.......my horse coliced at Rolex the morning of the jogs because we put a tail wrap on him and he stressed out about that. Luckily we could just get the wrap off and lunge him for 10 minutes and he was good as new.

Bob - the coverage is fantastic. Kerry's commentary (and Amy's this afternoon as well) was great: informed, positive, friendly, and knowledgeable. Great picture, sound was good - super all around. Perhaps encourage your cameraman not to go for the closeup right at the changes - the flying change is one of the movements it really helps to see the whole thing, but overall, really a wonderful job and well worth the price. Thanks to you and your whole team for pulling this together.

Missy R. won the first day of dressage last year, so I imagine she was a bit disappointed with her test today, but I thought she did a great job of riding an obviously tense horse and helping him relax, rather than get worse, as the test progressed. Tactful ride and, despite the tension, such a fun horse to watch go with his huge movement.

Thank you for the coverage.
I really liked the way the camera follows the riders outside until they dismount. It makes each test very personal. A glimpse into those ungarded moments of the rider, the groom, family. Those ungarded moments are very moving.
You asked for coments...There seemed to be a lot of background noise this morning(sounded like the wind etc) that sometimes made it difficut to hear the announcers voices.
I had to work so I missed this afternoon. I will watch it soon. Thank you for this feature also.

British Lottery Funding has been witheld for use in sending the team to HK this year. Most who have been sent over in previous years were on the World Class Perfromance List so lottery money funded all or most of the expences...I believe Polly will have to pay for this trip herself....which is not a problem for her as her family are fairly well off.

From what I heard UN spent more time off of the ground then on it. Kind of like riding a lit firecracker.

Yeah, UN was practicing her airs above ground for several portions of the test. Also she flat out stopped a few times and was generally insolent. Best of all, as soon as the test was over Jane sighed this HUGE sigh of relief - she was laughing all the way through the test. And then the mare walked out on a loose rein not at all bothered by the crowds or anything, happy as can be. You can tell she wasn't scared, just a pill!!

Her horse was obviously very tense- cantered for majority of extended trot, trotted the walk portion of the test, etc. Blair did an excellent job riding it though.. sat very quietly and didn't let it get to her head. Even gave her horse a big pat afterward!

Traffic into the Horse Park was MUCH better today-yesterday there were cops from three different agencies plus Andy Frain Security and there wasn't much co-ordination at first. Then, to really make things worse, people didn't know where they were supposed to go and spent too much time arguing with the cops and having to be spoonfed their directions.
Today the major problem was peole who were supposed to take the campground entrance were sent to the main entrance, so KHP employees who were supposed to be responsible for KHP traffic only had to accommodate them somehow. The what REALLY got some people's panties in a wad was that there were not enough spaces allocated for patron, etc. so they were sent to overflow parking at the SW corner of the main lot, which meant they had to pass by parked cars that had campground passes. Hopefully that will be straightened out tomorrow.

I don't know Tara at all, but I had watched her warm up on Wed in the arena and she sure had her hands full. I was so impressed with her calmness. And then today, watched her warm up before dressage, and she really had him calm(ish) out there all by himself. Such a different atmosphere in the big arena though (did he even walk? Okay Guys- WHY hasn't someone said anything about From? What an amazing test- his trot work (IMHO) was by FAR the best of the day- and I gotta say that I was in tears after the 2nd movement (sucker, I know, for a good trot!). IF the canter changes had been "on" they would have clearly been in the lead. The only pair that got numerous 9's. It was so very VERY nice! Such an amazing horse- I admit to having a certain amount of sentiment towards them- I knew From when he was in MI and owned by Katja. He is just one of those special horses.
A few got unfair marks, I think. Karen on Hugh seemed to be scored fairly harshly. Not sure what that was about- got 4's on changes that were a big rough, but not bad, at least from where we were (in Patrons area- pretty good location, I think to see pretty well.)
But...Heidi's test was just wonderful, and Corrine should be over the top. Since we know Dobbin can run and jump...well...Snoopy, let her know she is being rooted for in a BIG way!
So, the ladies are doing VERY well, how nice! Anyone of them can pull it out!

I have to say that I'm sad to see so few non-North American riders. In an Olympic year it woud be nice to see how they stack up in a more international field. I see only 4 non US or Canadian riders. Doesn't really make it an international 4 star in my book, but however.....
I'm very interested to see how Cammy O'Rourke does with Kirby Park Irish Jamie. Kirby Park breeds some fabulous horses.
They are 11th after dressage, and they did some great stuff together down under, so I've been following them with interest.

No problem VV. I'm just bummed I'm not there.
Mike's throught the ducks no problem and Kingpin is a little lathered but still pulling through his hands.
Mr. Big is zipping around about halfway through and just popping over everthing! Looks marvelous.

Big pats for Kingpin as he gets finished. I didn't catch his time but Mike looked very happy.
Mr. Big got through the lake fine, a very happy, honest horse. I would love to ride him!

Mr. Big just had a refusal at the second duck, Julia missed her line. He went fine the second time and she circled before the third duck and took it well.

arnika

He looks really mellow and took the sunken roads slowly but very smoothly. She doesn't look like she's pushing him at all but his stride is enormous and he covers the ground faster than he looks.
They went through the hollow and took the skinny.

You made me laugh. And have my sympathies.
Can I throw out a total LLR question: Are some of the riders' stirrups are longer than you might expect for galloping and jumping? Some of the gals had almost no angle when they were going through the lanes. Just curious, educate me!
ps - love the commentary!
