Nic is a handsome boy, but check out baby Lentenor, born in 07, he really resembles Barbaro.

http://www.millridge.com/barbaros-family.aspx (and click on the kentucky.com link, then scroll down the videos on the right side, look for "barbaro's brother", for a very cute video of this little guy at 7 days old last spring). ♠

Beautiful!

Does anyone know when Nicanor will be sent into training with Matz and eventually raced?

Also, is La Ville in foal for this year?

La Ville didn't catch in 2007, unfortunately. Mr/Mrs Jackson were wishing for a filly.............

I would think Nicanor will be going soon.

The report is that he will not arrive at Fair Hill for "a little while"

No clue when that is, but I know sources who will get the word out when he is on the van headed north.

I love his face! Actually, I love his whole head. It's very pretty from the front, very distinguished in profilse.

Can't wait to see how he goes. I know he's not Barbaro, and I don't expect to see the same results (seriously, how could anyone expect that again?), but it'll just be exciting to see those bloodlines on the track again.

And a fuzzy wooly mamoth Lentenor is!!!

Opinions and superstitions aside, I galloped at Stephens very briefly in FL this year and must say he is quite the feisty looker.

So being a little new to racing and the training techniques, is there still time for him to start as a 2 yr old? Or do you think they will wait till he is 3?

Watching Nicanor: Thoughts from Photographer Louise Reinagel (http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/nicanor/archive/2008/04/23/watching-nicanor-thoughts-from-photographer-louise-reinagel.aspx)

(gorgeous shot of his head!!!)

From The BloodHorse:
http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/nicanor/archive/2008/04/23/watching-nicanor-thoughts-from-photographer-louise-reinagel.aspx

"They were ready for me when I got to the barn, and they knew it was a special morning because Nicanor was going to be photographed. He hadn’t become a celebrity as far as making him visually available to the public – he was only talked about by everybody, I don’t think many pictures had been taken of him."

and

Per John Stephens, Stephens Thoroughbreds:
"This horse is a little bit different than your average Joe. He's very intelligent. He has a connection with everybody in the barn that works with him. He has a disposition that makes you want to know him.
"I’m not hyping this up; I’m not intrigued with the personality of a horse very often because rarely do they have an obvious personality. When he came into the barn, he was known as Barbaro’s brother. But I think he is known in the barn now as Nicanor and people are starting to respect him for who he is in his own right. He has his own personality and the people who work with him are very connected to him."

I'm glad to read the last post.

I'm happy to see that people are not just considering him 'Barbaro's Little Brother' but a horse in his own right that can break free of his brother's shadow. Would I love for him to be a successful racehorse? You bet. But I'd be just as happy to see him able to stand on his own merits.

Oh No! Tell me this horse doesn't have the same conformation as Barbaro!! It was his spindly little legs, and that horrible fracture, fractures, did you see the xrays? that killed him, laminitis came much later. He was dead from the day the leg shattered, altho I applaud his owners for trying to save him. I am constantly amazed at everyone who blames laminitis for his death for it was the breeding for speed speed speed on hard surfaces that caused his demise. As long as the racing industry does this, more horses will die from broken legs, not from accidents, but from conformation. Didn't y'all read the article in Equus by the woman who rode "Seabiscuit" where she talked about watching a horse exercise at a track and break down, and that he was so "noble" as he looked at the horizon while they put him down? Noble my foot, he was in shock, and if he was intelligent, he knew he was a dead horse. For every horse whose owner tries to rehabilitate him, thousands are just put down when they break a bone. Noble is not the word, cruelty is.
My OTTB survived 3 yrs on the track and years as a broodmare before I rescued her on her way to becoming "filly mignon". And she had great blood lines and perfect conformation. cast aside by the "racing industry". I think the people who go to New Holland and pull horses out of the kill pen are wonderful, but all you racing fans should go spend a couple of days at the track and watch a couple of horses get put down. fun fun fun?

I'm pretty sure that Barbaro had quite nice conformation.

I knew it wouldn't be long!!!

http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/nicanor/archive/2008/04/30/nicanor-ships-to-fair-hill.aspx

Nicanor leaves Stephens Thoroughbreds at 11:00 a.m., taking one last walk through tree-lined paths leading from spacious barns. With his legs wrapped in shipping bandages and his halter taped to prevent rubbing, the Dynaformer colt is alert and well-behaved. He takes a final look at his surroundings. He does not cause a commotion.

And:

Far away in Louisville, trainer Michael Matz is speaking to reporters about his Kentucky Derby starter, Visionaire (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/bio_Visionaire.asp). He will not be in Maryland when Nicanor arrives, but Michael’s right-hand-man, assistant trainer Peter Brette, is holding down the fort. He expects the colt to ship in at Fair Hill around 5:30 a.m. on May 1.

The Blood-Horse will be there also, as photographer Jim Coarse prepares to greet the colt early that morning. And later, after he settles in, Brette is prepared to give a full update.
Meanwhile, Nicanor rides through the night. It is time for him to embark on the next stage of his young career. The serious training is about to begin.

Read the whole article! Pictures also!!!

Is that Peter Brette with him in those last couple of pictures? If so, how emotional that must have been.

OK, I know this is just plain stoopid on my part, but I HATE the fact that he is resting the leg that cost his brother his life, ultimately, in this picture...

http://www.horsephotos.com/watermark.jsp?photoID=79746

And yes, he is gorgeous- both in his own right- and as, whether we like it or not- as the "heir"....

The second to last pic, in the stall, yes that's Peter.

The last, in the van, that's Grae Kennedy. Michael's other head assistant.

And as to the leg resting... I spoke to Jim. He was fidgeting, not resting, it was just a moment captured with his leg in motion.

AS far as I know (and I will likely see Dede next week and will ask when I next run into her) he is at the Jackson's farm.

Thats all I knew when last I asked Michael.

He looks seriously keyed up about his new surroundings! And, yes, he's absolutely georgous. I am still in love with that face and head....

Honestly, I started out having great hopes for him in terms of being the "heir," but I really, really can't wait to see how he does for HIMSELF. There are some similarities in appearance, but you can just see the personality oozing from this boy. He's definitely his own horse!

And he's beautiful :)
