I have just bought a mare named "Regal Swan"

Here is the page on her to save you from looking it up:

At some point, I would like to breed her to my stallion - Guaranteed Gold - and get a nice buckskin foal to run myself and hopefully get some credibility for GG as a possible race sire, but for the short term, I think I need to think "commercially" and breed her to something that already has some good, solid race credentials to produce a foal that has commercial appeal

I am in Ontario, Canada and owing to how late it is I need to limit the stallion choices to reasonably close proximity to me. Plus - with building a new barn and still needing to seed pastures and hay field and put up paddocks, I have got to stick with a lower stud fee for this year. Next year I can get a little crazier but this year just cant do so

Who are the "good deals" out there? Any up and coming stallions that would cross well with her? Any sell offs of breedings that might be of interest?

The Asmussen's bought the 2006 colt - Promise Me Wine. I am REALLY hoping that he goes out this year and next and kicks some butt out there which should definately help raise her value and the value of her foals!

Thanks so much for any and all opinions and assistance on this one! :)

Just an idea - could you make her into a riding horse and buy/rescue a foal - there are so many out there that need help.

Not an expert here... and I know even less about CAN-breds...

But I think this guy is a good deal and might be worth taking a look at for your purposes:
http://www.stallionvision.com/wheresthering.htm

Someone else will need to weigh in on all the pedigree/hypo-mating pros and cons. Right off the bat I see a whole lot of Mr. P up close.

His first foals are 2 now. That could help or hurt you.

It is getting awfully late in the year, though...

For commercial appeal, how about Weather Warning? He was fast and precocious, although he had a short career. He is a son of Storm Cat and SC crosses well with His Majesty (the sire of Regal Affair). He also brings Carson City in as his broodmare sire, which would be nice if the Cuvee (by Carson City) hits.

Whiskey Wisdom is a solid stallion and Wild Again on His Majesty works well.

Alumni Hall is another one who is interesting. People are liking sons of AP Indy more and more and he's a second year stallion, I think.

Best of luck with it!

Thank you SO much! :)

SleepyFox - if this was your mare, out of Alumni Hall and Weather Warning - which would you pick and why?

I am leaning more towards Alumni Hall, but as you mentioned, if the 2006 Cuvee colt does some really spectacular things out there this year and next, the Weather Warning cross would be the smarter choice

Both stallions are close by, both stand at first rate farms, the stud fee and terms are identical, I like the "type" and the look of both stallions and feel they would both compliment the mare equally well build and conformation wise, both are young, unproven stallions so we really are comparing almost apples to apples with both of them

Does one stand out more than the other and if so - which one and for what reason?

Swain was also suggested as a possible choice and I do like him a lot but am trying to avoid the extra distance to get to a stallion and having to ship the mare commercially. With both Weather Warning and Alumni Hall, I can tease and check at home and then just ship in for the day and get her bred and bring her home again so much easier all the way round ...

Between the two, I'd probably go with Weather Warning. Alumni Hall has had some issues - doesn't he have some fertility/lack of interest issues? Not sure the details on that and perhaps they have it figured out. Plus, he had some issues that kept him from racing for a long time - he's going to be a harder sell to the pinhooking market. If you are breedinng to race, I think he's the more durable of the two stallions. But, if you are breeding to sell, precocity is the ticket and when you combine AP Indy's slower maturing genes with a horse that didn't start until his 5yo year, buyers may shy away. Plus, with Weather Warning, you get the possibility of some nice chrome. ()

Of course, I don't know the Canadian market well at all. And, I haven't done any in-depth pedigree analysis - so take it for what it's worth.

Ack! Just got this emailed to me as well:

I like Alumni Hall's pedigree. He didn't race at all until he was 5, which I have no problem with. What I think is a little weird about him is that he was to stand at Lane's End last year, but wouldn't cover any mares, and was sent back to train as a steeplechase horse. I would definitely ask Norse Ridge about his fertility and libido.

I'm not too impressed by Weather Warning. I think the only thing he's got going for him is that he's standing at Windfields, who obviously have the ability to make a stallion. His only 'stakes win' was the Manitoba Derby, against a field of really weak horses. The fact that he is at Windfields may help make your foal a little more 'commercial' when it comes time to sell it.

...sigh... might be back to the drawing board on this one ...

Or - in a worst case scenario if I cant figure it all out in the next week, this is the year she does get bred to Guaranteed Gold for me to hang onto that foal myself to race and I properly analyze who to breed her to next year instead

I think my Sport Horse breeding is FAR easier than this race horse stuff ... ;)

SleepyFox
Apr. 4, 2008, 02:41 PM
Okay, I'll defend Weather Warning.

I'll admit his race record does prove that old adage "not all blacktype is created equal." However, he is a stakes winner and he did run at top tracks. CD, FG, etc. He also was fast and fast sells. He is also out of a really nice GRISW mare. The rest of the blacktype in his pedigree is a little weak, but I've seen worse. I also like where he is standing - that was a big reason for my suggesting him. If he was at Podunk Stables, I'd avoid him.

Does the Canadian market like first and second year stallions? If it does, great! If not, and buyers want to wait until a stallion is proven, then go elsewhere - he doesn't have the credentials to carry his foals past that bias.

The thing to remember is: you are looking for stallions in Ontario, not KY or FL. If he had some more impressive stakes wins under his belt, he'd be in FL for his first year.

I really don't have a dog in this fight, so I'm just defending him as an academic exercise, so again, take it for what it's worth. :)

Honestly, I think the FIRST thing you need to decide is if you want to breed for the Ontario sales/racing market or if you are hoping to breed something from her that would be marketable if you took it down to Keeneland. Depending on what your goal is you are looking at very different groups of stallions.

I personally think the Ontario sired/Candian bred incentives are great, and worth paying attention to when making your stallion choices. I also think that a stallion doesn't have to be of "Kentucky quality" to be a really good sire of Ontario based horses.

Take Best of the Bests for example. He was a TOP racehorse, ran well in some of the best races in the world, for one of the top racing organizations in the world. But...didn't exactly set the world on fire as a sire in the UK, so is now here in Ontaro. When standing at Darley he was a small fish in a massive pond, now that he's here he's a big fish in a little pond and my feeling is that he's going to prove to be a very good Ontario based sire. I don't think his kids are going to win the Kentucky Derby :) but I suspect they'll be pretty darn good at Woodbine and Fort Erie.

Another stallion in Ontario at quite a low stud fee that seems to produce saleable youngsters and decent racehorses is Domasca Dan. And...thinking about it, I know of another that has only just recently arrived, I'll send you an email :)

I am not a pedigree guru by any stretch, I have someone plan my matings for me, but if I am reading this correctly, her best foal was her first one who was by a son of Wild Again. Are there any other son's of Wild Again nearby? I like to stick with a cross that worked if possible.

That's one of the reasons I thought Whiskey Wisdom was a really good suggestion on SleepyFox's part.

While I don't think breeding her straight to your stallion and racing the foal yourself would necessarily be a bad idea, I do think you might have a little bit of trouble getting the resulting foal in with a decent trainer.

Just spoke with the farm that is standing Alumni Hall. 40 mares bred, 90% in foal, one maiden that came in straight from the track hasnt caught, one mare didnt catch on her foal heat and one client mare has not caught either. Balance have been bred and confirmed in foal.

So THAT is promising news for him! :)

Does the Canadian market like first and second year stallions?

No - not necessarily, but I am hoping to get in on the "ground floor" so to speak, and breed to the next latest and greatest stallion at an introductory fee. And if the Promise Me Wine colt does well out there this year and next under the Asmussen's, I am hoping that I can capitalize on that as well ...

And...thinking about it, I know of another that has only just recently arrived, I'll send you an email

Thanks a bunch Galileo - I LOVE your suggestions and Swain is still very much a consideration for her, but just not this year ...

Galileo1998

Wow, 40 mares bred AND checked in foal already and the breeding season only started about 49 days ago. That's surprising.

TrueColours
Apr. 4, 2008, 09:20 PM
Well - maybe it is 40 mares BOOKED and of the mares that have been bred, 90% of THOSE are confirmed in foal ... he would have been a busy boy for sure to get 40 mares in foal already! :)

Well - I have to give full marks to Norse Ridge. Coming home 3 emails were awaiting me from them with names and phone numbers of clients that had bred mares to Alumni Hall this year that are willing to attest to the fact that he happily and enthusiastically covered their mares and got the job done and got them in foal. So I am VERY impressed! :)

Pulled some Werk ratings and Hypomatings on 3 stallions and what an eye opener THAT was:

Whiskey Wisdom - "A" Werk (+175%) DP of 18 DI of 2.60 and CD of 0.61

Weather Warning - "A" Werk (+370%) DP of 20 DI of 2.64 and CD of 0.65

And now on to Alumni Hall ... ;)

Alumni Hall - "A" Werk (+465%) DP of 30 DI of 2.16 and CD of 0.50

Alumni Hall wins hands down in my books ... :)

It was also quite interesting to pull Werk ratings on some of the other Windfields stallions with her - B's and C;s in some cases - Best of the Bests was absolutely awful with her ...

My problem now is that apparently she looks like she is coming in now, she arrives on Sunday, I need to get a swab done on her and she might well be a breed on Sunday or Monday which isnt going to work, plus I dont know if this is a transitional cycle or a real one??? Plus I have no idea if Norse Ridge has any time slots available on Monday anyhow, so I may well let her go through this cycle, short cycle her and try and plan the breeding a whole lot better on her next one

Just how late is this in the grand scheme of things race horse breeding wise? Is a mid March foal still perfectly acceptable for the sales? What if we end up going into April 2009 for foaling? Is that going to be the kiss of death for the foal?

Galileo1998

Best of the Best's is a B with her, I'm not sure I'd call that awful :)

I really don't have any info for you as far as mating goes, but I came across your post looking for something else, and was surprised to see many horses in your mares pedigree that we have trained at our farm. We do a lot of business with Lindenwood Farm, which is where your mare's dam, Afleet Forever, was stabled. In fact, my parents own Afleet Nownforever, a daughter of Afleet Forever. Lindenwood used to stand the stallion Denouncer at their farm, and he has since relocated to our farm. We are in southern Illinois, which is a long way from Canada - but it sure is a small world.

That is great news for Alumni Hall. We had originally booked our mare to him last year, when it turned out he didn't want to play, and ended up going with Mingun instead (which I was real happy about anyway). So this is really AH's first year. I know they considered bringing him back to Lane's End if there was enough interest. I'm glad he's got it figured out!

now here is my last remaining concern about Alumni Hall ...

He didnt race at all at 2 and 3 - does anyone have any idea why that was?

Will that hurt me (or any other mare owners that book to him) as the first thing that I would think is that he didnt mature early enough to GET to the races until 4, which - lets face it - is the kiss of death for a race stallion. Also I heard that AP Indy's mature late as well.

So - will the AP Indy connection and the fact that he didnt race until 4 kill any decent prices or interest at the Yearling Sales?

Norse Ridge sent out a mailing to CTHS members about 2 months ago with an explanation as to why he didn't race as a 2/3 year old. If I recall, they explained that he was injured in training.

He actually didn't race at all until he was a five year old. I believe it was because of some injuries.

Well - I am happy to report that I got my mare covered this morning, by Alumni Hall, who is a stunning stallion and a real gentleman as well

There was NO problem with his libido (!) - he came prancing and dancing down from the stallion barn to the breeding area and knew why he was there and was looking for my mare as soon as he walked into the barn. Everything was very low key, he was very relaxed, he got the job done and one of the assistants got a dismount sample of semen, put it on a slide and I viewed it under the microscope as well. NO doubt in my mind from viewing that sample that he also has excellent semen quality! :) And there are one heck of a lot of swimmers in there as well ...

So - I can say that both rumors are now laid to rest in my mind!

Now the long wait for the next 15 days until she gets checked to see if she caught or not ...

Wish us luck! :)

Happy to report that Regal Swan is now checked safely in foal to Alumni Hall :) so now the long wait until 2009 until her foal arrives ...

Thanks once again for the suggestions for my mare - VERY much appreciated and in the next few years we'll see how good a match it has been!
