View Full Version : Homicide at the Point-to-Point

Nope, no Law and Order or CSI: Miami type of plot line.
Rather Funny Cide's half-brother Homicide who took a victory over the weekend at Green Spring Valley Point-to-Point in Cockeysville, Maryland. [Some photos of his effort here at Final Turn (http://finalturngallery.com/g2/main.php/v/ALLIS-ART/album840/3-29-08/)]
As spied by Patty - thanks! - he is Belle's Good Cide's final foal as she was euthanized due to complications from colic in 2003 just after giving birth to Homicide, her fourth foal. His career of racing started in 2006 and he ended with 7 starts 0-0-0 and $1,393 in earnings.
Homicide, ch. g. 2003, by Mojave Moon - Belle's Good Cide, by Slewacide. Bred by Bonita Farm (Md)
Seventh Race: The Grace Miller Whedbee Memorial Senior Field Masters Chase (http://www.shawandowns.org/main/events/gsv/gsv_rslt.htm)
What he participated in is a 'senior Field Master's chase' - a pic of what it looks like here from the 2007 race (http://www.shawandowns.org/main/photos/gsv/feild.jpg) - where by [as described to me]: the field follows behind the master over the entire course, which is usually a couple of miles over hill & dale with jumps. You can stop, trot, circle, or whatever necessary to retain control of your mount but must stay behind the master. Then, after the last fence, the Master pulls off to the side and releases the field to race to the finish
As you can see from the 2007 picture of the same racing above those solid Maryland split rail fences are far higher then even at the Novice eventing level!
Nice see yet another track horse - like Straight Gin, Rochester, etc finding success this Spring over fences.

At least Homicide is winning at something!
I wanted to take my 21 year old in our Master chase here this year, but I thought that might be asking a bit much of him. ;)
Although our point-to-point doesn't always have a very competitive field. Case in point-- last year the Master fell off during the chase. Oh what a humorous situation that was...

This was QUITE the competitive field.
I was actually Homicide, aka Pete's, groom for the past few weeks. He's fun, but the owner remarked that her arms were about 10 feet longer after the race. A horse we have at our farm and my friend rode (and I groomed as well) came in third (Leed's Creek). Anyways, there were two actually winning timber horses in the race that he beat out. And a few others as well, it's more like a "can you pace your horse, then spring a 1/4 mile" race. The fences from Greenspring are pretty big! It's run over the same course as the rest of the timber races.
Anyways, thought I'd throw in my 2 cents, and I'll let Pete's owner know that people are noticing him. He'll be running again in the FMC on Saturday, and in the team relay on Sunday.

Oh I wasn't implying this wasn't competitive, hehe! I know it was.
I just thought I'd share about the humor that is TN point-to-points. Last year after the Master got remounted in our MC, an appaloosa pony went on to win the race. ;)

Very cool! Thanks for the info. Little goes unnoticed these days it seems ;) I'm sure he was trained with a lot of promise for the track but I'm glad he's found success in P2P that alluded him before.
Those fences btw are very impressive. I've easily jumped oxers, logs, coops and even a prelim level fence with my mare but taking those solid 3-board suckers on a 1/2 brother to Funny Cide can't be without some white knuckles! Kudos to Stephanie Moore.

Haha, and I just made a comment the other day that heck if I'd jump some of those crazy xc jumps!! Shawan has some challenging xc event fences, along with the timber course (and hurdles in the fall). I'd much rather jump a timber fence that has a possibility of breaking versus a solid log with a giant drop on the landing side!!!
From my understanding, he wasn't much of a flat horse; but Stephanie does adore him.

Yeah! That pic I posted was from HCIB Hunt races, the week before the ones that Glim posted.
And I just noticed how docile Pete looks in the picture I posted...he only nearly jumped on me a few times. :)

Just curious - are Stephanie's silks intentionally like Sackatoga Stable' silks (http://www.sackatoga.com/sackatoga/content/Default.aspx)? :)

Not that I'm aware of. I believe her silks are her mother-in-laws colors (?).

How very cool is that, that we have "an associate" right here in our midsts??
Homicide is one fine looking beastie. It's wonderful that he's found himself a career!

Third weekend of racing in a row .... 04/06/08 Marlborough Hunt Races Hunt Team Relay
Finished 3rd out of 12-entries (per the Central Office)

Actually, at Marlborough, the team finished 3rd out of 3 teams, and Pete, unfortunately was not in attendance. If you check the overnights though, he's entered for Loudoun.

Has Homicide return to doing point to points since April 6th and the Marlborough Hunt Races? The Central Entry Office (www.centralentryoffice.com) lists that as their last effort.

No, he hasn't. And he actually did not run at Marlborough, he had a fever the the Friday before the Elkridge-Harford meet, so he had a substitute replace him on the relay team and also did not run at Elkridge the day before Marlborough.

Every time I see the title of this thread, I can't help but think that this must be a new Jody Jaffe or Dick Francis or Tami Hoag or Rita Mae Brown book!
But again, I am so happy to see he's found his place in the world. :)

Oooooooooo ... very cool. That was a great series! (Beezer hurriedly adds it to her list of DVDs to buy before her next month-long association with the couch and TV remote following her latest upcoming appointment with the knee surgeon and his incredibly large knife! )

Ah, a ruse! Perhaps the Central Entry Office should be corrected ;)
Do you know if there is any chance he'll be returning in the near future or will his next start likely be with the various fall point to points?

I don't think there is a plan to ever run him sanctioned, so I don't think he'll be seen until the Fall at the earliest. Stephanie is just having fun with him and doesn't want to put much stress on him, so I presume he'll be back next Spring for the MD series and possibly some lady rider timber (but that is speculation).
I think her plan, along with her other horses, is to take him to some jumper shows this summer.
As an aside, here is the gallery of a friend that is a photographer that was at all of the MD races this year. There are pics of Homicide, as well as many other notables from throughout this past season.

Props to your friend on the gallery - some great shots there. Thanks for sharing!
Agreed that for Homicide at least and Stephanie this should be fun so no need to make him into the next Good Night Shirt.

With so many articles covering his more famous half-brother, any known fall plans with Homicide to return to the public eye in the near future? I still think that if she could ever somehow get him into one of the NSA races at Saratoga (which are far less challenging - IMHO) then anything you'd see at Great Meadows - there would be a huge turnout of people interested. It would be a PR coup for NYRA.
Although Funny Cide will not pony out horses to starting gate whatsoever. Maybe an exception for Homicide :D
