Who can make a pair of high quality, or at least decent quality, custom reins for me?
Want GOOD english, french or german leather, or at least as high a quality as Dover gets for their Wellington bridle parts. Want brown or havana, 7/8" width, and 3/8" width, PLAIN, 72" long with stainless buckle ends.

Bobby's English Tack makes really nice reins, and while they don't do "custom" tack, they have so many options you're bound to find what you're looking for. Plus, they are very affortable. www.eqtack.com

Thanks.
I would like to find a higher quality leather than Bobby's and I need reins that are loner than Jerry's. The longest Jerry's has is 62". I would like to get 70" or 72" and a higher quality leather.

Call Jerry. He will make longer ones. He did for me. I have a 17.3H horse that needs long reins...and I have 2/3 pairs of them

Good suggestions. Dunno which brain surgeon tack manufacturer thought it would be a good idea to save $$ and make the standard rein length 54" on a dressage bridle. Buy a nice Passier double bridle and have to chuck the reins and buy new, longer ones.

Although they don't mention reins specifically on the website, I am fairly certain that Spirig will do them for you.

Their bridles are really nice, too!

Hhhmmm, looking at Spirig's web site it does look like they might be very willing to do what I need. Good idea. I will e-mail them and ask. Thank you.

Does Jerry's have nice leather ... the type that oils/soaps up and gets soft and very light in your hands?
Only have Dover's Wellington bridle parts to go on as far as "new leather" products go ... all of my leather is much older and higher quality than what I am finding in the states right now. It is acceptable in quality for cheek peices ... don't have any of their reins because they don't have what I need.
Bobby's is thick and heavy leather ... can't tell the difference between their buffalo hide and their english leather .. not a good feel, too heavy and thick and clunky.
Plus, almost all reins are 54" !! No, "combing the reins" there !!
Anyway, does Jerry have some high quality leather? Would love to order American if I can.

Call Jerry or Sherry. They always answer the phone. I honestly don't know where the leather comes from, but it's all great.
I have 2 bridles 3 pairs of reins and a couple different nosebands. I love everything. I give it a good cleaning and conditioning when I first get it and all of my stuff is soft and light.
I can never find the kind of leather that's on those bridles in any tack store I go to. I'm a big "feeler" as in I like to feel everything and judge that way, so I always go to the tack section and feel all teh bridles... I never like any of them. Even the higher ends that have 400+ price tags.

royal militron,
I know a lot of the high-end leather does not live up to it's name. I will call or e-mail Jerry's. You sound like you know what I mean by a good feeling leather. It doesn't really work right if it doesn't have that live feel to it.
Thank you.

Arc De Trpiomphe made a semi custom Oak bark brown dressage bridle for my horse. 66" reins are just BARELY long enough for my 18 hand horse ( stretching is at the buckle).. They contacted me and asked if I could wait until they had the "perfect" hide, that they would make them from one piece... ( all reins over 60" are generally "seamed" in the middle- making the length from two pieces) Within 60 days I recieved them, they are great.
I have two other pairs of Euro American Saddlery reins, 66" seamed, but they are wonderful soft and have lasted years. They can proibably make you a set of 72" too....
Both kinds are brown ( oak bark and havana ) with stops...

Jerry uses only Sedgwick English bridle leather. http://www.je-sedgwick.co.uk/services.cfm. He will do custom lengths for you.
Bobby's has all of their leather work assembled in India/Malaysia, so don't know where he gets his leather. Not in the same league as Jerry's.

I've heard of Sedgwick, but that was before the internet. Now I can go look!
That is exactly what I am looking for. I definatley will go with Jerry's.
Does he do dropped nosebands also?
Thank you.

Here's a very informative video about the leather process at Sedgwick
http://www.corporatedvd.co.uk/je/je_h.wmv
I suggest you give Jerry a call and ask him about a dropped nose band. They do all of their own work so it's quite possible. One thing that sets Jerry's apart from others - besides the beautiful leather - is their stitching. It is tight and even.
And, no... I don't work for Jerry's! I used to own a browband company and did a great deal of research on leather products.

I also have several Jerry's bridles, and multiple sets of reins. The leather quality is fantastic.
I got rubber lined reins that I wore through the rubber in only 1 year (he has since changed the rubber lining). He replaced it for free.
He does do drop nosebands, several folks at my barn have them.
He can adjust any piece to any length for your specifications (for instance, I sent back the cheek pieces to a recent bridle purchase so that he could custom make ones 1" smaller--no extra charge).
I plan to have these bridles forever.

I'll put in another good word for Jerry's. I had him make a 75" pair of rubber reins and they are perfect.

Well, not so true, Bobby's uses Sedgwick leather as well. I specifically asked about the differences in the two bridles because I saw two bridles that looked identical, with different part numbers and different prices. The bridle I ordered from Tackzone was the sedgwick leather. They have the less expensive leather version, which was made of buffalo. I don't really know much about Sedgwick, so thank you for the link about their info. Very informative. I am very happy with the Sedgwick Leather Bobby's Bridles.
