Ok, post your picks, who do you like????

Godolphin Mile
1600m (~1mile), $1m
Diamond Stripes... looks best of a very mediocre bunch.

UAE Derby
1800m (~9f), $2m
Honour Devil... classy looking Brazilian horse, though he was caught napping last time out by...
Royal Vintage... continues his rivalry with Honour Devil, not much between these southern hemi breds the last couple of outings.

Golden Shaheen
1200m (~6f), $2m
Diabolical... likes this track, won easily last time out.
Benny the Bull... started the year well in the Sunshine Millions, a good chance to continue the US dominance of this race

Dubai Duty Free
1777m (~9f), $5m
The most fascinating race on the card. Finsceal Beo, Darjina, Admire Aura, Bullish Luck, Creacadoir, Literato, Vodka, Niconero, class horses from Ireland, France, Japan, Britain, Hong Kong, Australia.. mouthwatering stuff.

Creahadoir... to continue the form that saw him come good towards the end of last season
Darjina... ran flat in Hong Kong, but at her best is as good a miler as there is inworld.

Sheema Classic
2400m (~12f), $5m
Viva Pataca... Easily the best horse on paper, hard to see what could beat him.
Doctor Dino... Came good at the end of last season, a season that saw him race on three continents and 5 differnet countries. Not a world beater, but the kind that could sneak an upset.

World Cup
2000m (~10f), $6m
Curlin'.... hard to bet against this one, will have to produce a stinker to get beaten.
Jalil... the form horse of the rest of the bunch, looks like he could recoup some of that $9.7m he cost as a yearling

No pick but I just have to say I was deployed to the United Arab Emirates from last Sept. to this past Jan. and I got to go to the Dubai track and watch TB and Arabian races and it was just AMAZING! I also went to the Abu Dhabi track and watched TB's and Arabian races there too. BEAUTIFUL! I have pics I'll have to post them. Such a unique experience all in all.

I am going to post this here (on Curlin thread).

I will say, my dvr says nothing about abc and Dubai

The World Cup, contested at 2,000 meters (about 1 1/4 miles), is the last of seven races Saturday night. The card's opener is for Arabians, followed by three dirt races, and two awesome grass stakes - the $5 million Duty Free and the $5 million Sheema Classic. Post time for the first Thoroughbred race is 9:40 a.m. Eastern in the U.S. The World Cup is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Eastern and will be broadcast on tape delay at 2:30 on ABC. The races can be seen live on HorseRacing TV and TVG and on many online wagering platforms and will be streamed in real time on espn360.com. U.S. bettors can play the World Cup online or at simulcasting facilities.

Gotta go to work-picks later :(

I wish I was more familiar with the international racing scene at the moment...

Godolphin Mile--
Diamond Stripes

UAE Derby--
I like Honour Devil best, but a part of me wants to cheer for Numaany after that bizarro win at Aqueduct.

Golden Shaheen--
Going American all the way on this one. Benny The Bull and Idiot Proof.

Dubai Duty Free--
Admire Aura

Sheema Classic--
Well of course Better Talk Now is going to redeem himself! :)

World Cup--
Curlin

Btw, didn't list it above, but the first race on the card is the Kahayla Classic, a race for Arabians. Sheihk Hamdan/Shadwell's horse, Madjani, will be attempting a record third straight victory in this race.
Suprisingly there are no Turkish runners, given they generally have the best Arabian runners, i guess the measly $250k purse doesn't make it worthe their while. 8 of the 9 runners are French bred. All runners are UAE based except for the English horse, Al Moutawakel.

The field...

I just scanned thru tomorrows programming, and the Dish has two, count em, two horse racing channels, and Horse Racing tv has it coming I guess live at 6:00 a.m. CENTRAL time.
The only irritation factor of this channel however is that the programs are run in half hour increments. TVG runs racing in a single program several hours in length.

Can someone please tell me how to pronounce Finsceal Beo? Thanks.

Re picks, I don't know most of the horses running. In the WC, I have looked for a reason to pick against Curlin but have trouble finding them. I have nothing against the horse, just his owners. I would like to see Premium Tap win, though I don't think we will. Love the horse, though.

I must admit, I can't stand many of the announcers on HRTV. And, they often don't even show the post parade. The women are knowledgeable, but some of those guys ---- ie. the shadowroll is there so the horse doesn't see shadows (just this past week), and then he has the nerve to be condescending to the shows female cohost!

I much prefer TVG, former and current trainers as well as jockeys and handicappers. Better group on the whole, they always show the post parades (I'm not a bettor) and usually have something interesting to say. Too bad they appear to have lost the contract on many of the big tracks this past winter. I hope this changes soon.........

As far as the big networks.....well, they always find someone to be entertaining..........

Per the NTRA's weekly newsletter:

The complete, wire-to-wire running of the Dubai World Cup can be seen via same-day tape on "NTRA Racing to the Kentucky Derby" from 5:00-6:00 p.m. (ET) on ESPN2. The telecast originates from Gulstream Park and is highlighted by the 58th Florida Derby.

So that's one of the races at least.

Honour Devil takes the UAE Derby in a canter, from his arch rival Royal Vintage, with the filly, Cocoa Beach back in 3rd. First 4 horses home were southern hemishpere bred.
Would be great if Honour Devil came Stateside in the summmer. The next Invasor?

Just an FYI-- you can't view the race on ESPN360.com if your ISP doesn't offer it. I hate you, Comcast.

But, you can listen to the live broadcast here:

.

Benny the Bull does the biz to continue American domination of the big sprint. Idiot Proof finished 2nd, with local horse, Star crowned in 3rd. However, Mick Kinane, rider of the third horse has lodged an objection against Idiot Proof. Replays showed Idiot Proof hung on Star Crowned almost the whole 6f. The sprint course at Nad Al Sheba is a straight 6f.
The objection doesn't affect the winner.

Official winning distance was 7 3/4 lengths.
A mere walk in the park for this horse. Will he be challenged at all this year? Can't see much of anything that will give him a run for his money.

Second placed Asiatic Boy will be shipped stateside this year, should add some interest to the older horse ranks.

I can't believe this!!!!I had a job test/interview to take the ENTIRE MORNING, and I thought, well, ok,thats what DVRs are for... So I set it up, and hit both channels because TVG doesn't always broadast internationally, so you never know. Now I live in CENTRAL time zone. My dvr said it would begin at 6:30 a.m. So I set it to begin. However those stinkers at HRTV weren't finished at the appointed time, and they cut it off [in their annoying half hour increments,] and when I got home, I wanted to watch them in order. I didn't have to leave till around 8 so I already knew they were blowing smoke about the time.] Imagine my shock and horror when I got home and NO BIG RACE!!! :o Not on TVG either. On Sunday, the international racing trails on for hours and hours but not so today! :o
I am a firm believer in cutting off my nose to spite my face, so last year, I had it up to here, [line at about nose level,] with Comcast. Excuse me, but they couldn't pour pee out of a boot without a map and directions!!!! They sent out a mouthbreathing knuckledragging oaf out to switch my service over to HD and he wouldn't TOUCH my own dvr. I now have the Dish which is pretty good-more channels than I can ever use, and these two racing ones. But in giving up Comcast, I also banned them from my puter. I HATED the service, and detest outlook. Never have figured it out. I got to watch Rolex LIVE last year-How fun was that? And Badminton. Now I am back to Poky poky dial up, and since my current job is working half the night, I am sometimes online at the magic hour of 3 am when the dvr needs the phone line. [Sorry about the rant-nothing is ever easy] :o And I have to agree with your assessment about HRTV-pretty bad but at least it is there. I have noticed a definete decline in racing coverage from ESPN since they got the BC. TVG is the best thing going and that is where I spend most of my free tv time.

My response keeps getting lost in neverland so I give up!

I was glad Great Hunter didn't embarress himself, like Notional. I think Better Talk Now was sort of moving at the end but the camera anlge moved away so I couldnt tell. I did enjoy Sun Classique's win. Never seen her run before, but I liked it!

As for Curlin, yeah he looked amazing. I can't imagine what he'll look like when he goes to stud. I've seen those Smart Strike ads and he looks pregnant and dare I say, fat? I mean, he is HUGE.

But dare I say, I wonder what would have been had teh others stayed in training. I still think SS didn't like the mud and would have run on.

Anybody read the Stewards Reports for the races? Some are interesting. I didn't realize Notional pulled up lame (I had heard about Numaany). Viva Patacas jockey was warned about whip usage as was Prado, just to name a couple. Oh, and Gomez was fined and suspended one day for the Mile.

Not so fast ... final race times under review: reported by DRF 4-3-08 (http://www.drf.com/news/article/93434.html)

Doubts are being raised about the accuracy of the times recorded at Nad Al Sheba on Dubai World Cup Night last Saturday. The Emirates Racing Authority has removed the fractional times from its website and has announced that it is conducting an investigation into claims by the Racing Post that several clockings were inaccurate.

The uncertainty stems from the supposed track record of 1:46.20 for about 1 1/8 miles on turf set by Jay Peg in the Dubai Duty Free. Jay Peg set a slow pace in the race before coming again to win by a half-length from Darjina. Clockers for the Racing Post caught the winner in 1:47.20 and raised the alarm, which has set in motion the investigation.

The Racing Post claims that five of the six Thoroughbred races, the Godolphin Mile being the exception, went a full second slower than the official timings. The Emirates Racing Authority is investigating the validity of the following times: Curlin's winning Dubai World Cup time of 2:00.15 for 1 1/4 miles, Sun Classique's 2:27.45 in the 1 1/2-mile Sheema Classic, Benny the Bull's 1:08.70 in the six-furlong Golden Shaheen, and Honour Devil's 1:48.60 in the 1 1/8-mile UAE Derby. The winning time of 1:36.96 recorded by Diamond Stripes in the Godolphin Mile is not being questioned.
