View Full Version : Bradoon/Curb for Difficult To Bit Horse?

My guy goes well ONLY in a D-ring Myler Mullen Mouth. Not the Comfort Snaffle.. this is one I don't even think they make anymore - it is a solid bar w/a immobile roller (why it is there, I have NO idea as I do not think it moves at all) and it is curved.
It's time for the double. Any suggestions about what he is likely to be happy with? Obviously he likes a bit that does not move AT ALL... totally different than any other horse I've had to fit a double to. And as we all know, bits are $$$ so I'd like to avoid as much "trying" as possible.
Thanks for any suggestions :D

My horse that likes a really stable bit (and really close fitting bit) goes best in an eggbutt bradoon with a thinner medium wide port (sprenger special in the 16mm). This one has the rounded port and the slightly forward tilt to it for tongue relief. He also liked the arched mouth tongue relief curb from Sprenger.

Thanks :) What mouthpiece on the eggbutt?
Fantastic

The French Curb or Mors Lotte might work for your horse. It has a mullen like mouthpiece thats slightly curved.
These are kind of knockoffs of a combo Dewsbury HS and KK bits. I bought one of these (scroll down to Mors Lotte) when they were on ebay a few years ago plus a bunch of other bits http://www.neueschulebits.com/acatalog/Weymouths_.html
A egg butt or fixed ring bridoon like this might also work for your horse http://www.sellmefree.co.nz/Main/ListDisplayItem.aspx?R=2574738

Thanks :) I had never seen that brand of bit. Very nice.
I think my biggest issue is going to be the bradoon. Given his likes and dislikes, he is probably going to LOVE the curb. But I do not think he can tolerate a nutcracker snaffle and he has been quite intolerant of french links also.
Any other bradoon thoughts?
Fantastic

Mullen bridoon http://www.eurosaddlery.com/products2.cfm/ID/159/name/NATHE%20BRADOON Try calling them to see if they have others.
Looks like you could also get a mullen bridoon from Australia on ebay

Here's one on ebay for $6.95. Unfortunately it is stainless. The rings look small like one of those arabian bridoons and I don't know if tiny rings are FEI legal. For 7 bucks, it might be worth a shot to see if it works for your horse.

That is an overcheck bit for a Fine Harness horse.
Hastilow Saddlery sells Neue Schule bits in the USA.

Mine is the Herm Sprenger single joint eggbutt bradoon. They also make a kk link one, but my gelding doesn't like the links.
The smart thing to do is try before you buy. You can use snaffles in place of bradoons, just borrow a bunch of them.

I find the Nathes and such to be too thick for my guy.
His favorite bit on this earth is an ancient NeverRust Pelham. :uhoh:
The Myler Comfort Mouth is now available in baucher cheeks, which is common as a bradoon in Iberian breeds.
I am using a Neue Schule Comfy Contact, which is the same as a Myler (but in sweet iron) baucher for a bradoon and a Dewsbury mullen (Mors L'Hotte) weymouth.
I tried a mullen bradoon and mullen weymouth... something doesn't fit right when you do that. At least on him. <shrugs> I really WANTED it to work since I found these bradoons at a local tack shop and was over the moon--the SOLUTION! I thought... Himself thought otherwise. :sigh:
He will never be *quite* as happy in the double as he is in the pelham. But the NS & mullen combo get us close.
(for a snaffle he goes in a HS single joint, WELL curved baucher.)
