View Full Version : Need jingles for our colt! Sad news, post 27

We had to take our two week old son of Artrageous to the vet today. He's got septicemia (apparently fairly common after foal heat) and is now at the vet clinic at least overnight on IV antibiotics and banamine to get his fever down. We are hoping this is just a bump in the road as he has been otherwise extremely healthy. We'll know more in the morning...

***Update 3/21: Jr. is back home! We are cautiously optimistic at this point as he still doesn't feel 100% but he is confined to the stall (momma Rebuy is NOT happy about that!) so he can continue to get IV antibiotics 2x a day for the next three days. We knew he felt better last night when we got a call from the vet stating that he was stomping on their feet as they tried to hold him to give him his meds. :) Plus, his bloodwork was better, so we are really relieved at that!

Thank you all once again for your jingles! They are truly appreciated!

Same questions that I had! Are they flushing the joint affected? Joint ill can be treated, so keep your headup. My 2006 septic, joint ill foal ended up Premium at his inspection.

We did not pull and IGG on him as he was up in 30 minutes and nursed within an hour after that and the mare is an excellent milk producer. He was huge and extremely healthy until yesterday... This (http://foxhavenfarminc.com/images/Riva2008colt2.jpg) is him @ 12 hours old.

It's actually not in the joint, it's in the growth plate so flushing is not an option unfortunately. We are still optimistic that we'll have a good outcome and we will definitely know more tonight when we get the next set of bloodwork done. The fact that he is still nursing really well is a good sign...

Moose Junior, Arty's first foal and son, died this afternoon. We have been fighting for more than a month to keep him going through septicemia which led to joint infection and thought we had passed the worst of it this week. It was not to be. We are absolutely devastated by his loss as he had his sire's conformation disposition;and potential. He had to put up with a lot as he was dosed and dosed and needled, and dosed some more. He tried so hard, and he was so beautiful, especially before he got sick. We have a huge hole here, and it will be awhile before we recover. Hopefully, time will make things better.
In the meantime, thank you for all your good thoughts when he was born. He has crossed the Rainbow Bridge and will run forever in the green grass doing what Thoroughbreds are born to do. We will miss him terribly.

So sorry for your loss. Man, this year has just sucked. So many losses.

Your colt will have two gorgeous black TB fillies to play with over the bridge (Cy's half sister and a daughter).

I so understand the hole. I had been waiting for five years for a black, blingy filly and lost her and her mom.

Hopefully, your hearts will mend quickly, though never quite completely.

Hugs.

That is too sad. Sometimes all the care in the world is not enough.
Is there anything out of this that can be shared so we can learn more about this condition. I have enough worries with my mare and don't need any more to think about between now and August.

Well, one thing we have learned is that it is fairly common for foals to develop septicemia during the mare's foal heat. Keeping her clean "back there" and her udder can reduce the risk. Even a foal that's been healthy for the first week to 10 days can suddenly crash. They are just so fragile.

Thank you all for your thoughts and well wishes. We miss him so much.
