I told Genevieve it is a marketing ploy and she needs to turn it off for the mare to foal..... Been on for a while and mare does not look remotely ready!
I keep thinking the mare looks sad she isn't out with her friends.....

She loves her pitchfork scratches.
For for viewing pleasure tonight may I present Emerald Kitty (Sophie)
She is a tb mare that will hopefully very soon have a Sir Caletto baby.
She is dripping milk slowly and is very uncomfortable. Occasionally you might catch a glimpse of our new labor coach Chop Chop the rooster.
This mare loves to sleep. Seriously. For hours. Her other favorite pasttime is, you guessed it, staring out her window.
She is a maiden. A very confused and a little grumpy maiden.

OH ITS A ROOSTER!!!! The other day I emailed Flipped Her Hailo convinced I was seeing a spider monkey in the stall with her! LOL!!!!!!!
A few times while I was watching today I thought she would go....maybe tonight's the night!

I had a blonde moment...but I am gonna share anyway.
So...I clicked on the link and opened up the window to check out the momma to be and what do I see but daylight! I was confused for a few minutes, thinking I was watching old footage and then realized...duh...it is dark here in FL but still daytime in Cali...WHOA...:o
Hope she goes tonight and it is totally uneventful!!

my mare was a maiden (she had her foal 3 weeks ago) and all she did was stick her head out the back door. Weird. But we do have some wackadoos next store that like to gallop their horses up and down the parking lot, so I guess that makes for good entertainment.
I have been watching Sophie the last couple of days. When is she due? Good luck with her. My mare had nursing problems because she couldn't understand what that "thing" was doing trying to touch her back there! She kept spinning and sniffing him! Now, looking back, I should have milked her and bottle fed him the first time because it took over 5 hours for him to finally nurse.:(
Good luck, I will be watching (in between horse show and sleep:D)

She is at 344 days. Maidens are so funny until they get the hang of the nursing thing.

Ha ha VB. She loves her pitchfork scratches. She will back up to you if you are holding a pitch fork. Probably not a great trick but she is just so darn cute.
Once again Sophie has all the signs that she is ready. Well all except laying down and pushing it out! She had the chance to spend the day out grazing but stayed pretty close to her stall and paddock.
She had me going for awhile last night. She looked to be progressing but ended up just taking a long snooze. At least one of us got a good nights sleep!

What a freakin drama queen. All of the horses got a little fired up. Della and beija came in breathing fire also. Maybe I had the cattle prod adjusted too high? (Only kidding PETA folks)
She has calmed down finally but who knows what she has up her sleeve for later. Even Chops is staying clear of the barn. As she was having her tantrum milk was spraying everywhere. She should probably get her tail wrapped but I think we may need to draw straws for that. Any volunteers?
I am thinking that baby is probably thinking it is safer out than in about now. Poor little thing is going to need to be in therapy as soon as he is born. It will be a new Fox TV special "When Good Mares Go Bad"

Mar. 20, 2008, 11:43 AM
Chrissymack - sorry I missed your question earlier. I use the day/night hard wired cam from here http://www.foalingcamera.com/
The quality is usually clearer but I have turned the lights down so low to try to help Sophie relax and get down to business. Very easy to set up, the cam comes with all of the wiring you need. If you want to stream it online then you need device to do that. I use a Dazzle - it is what MareStare recommended.
I guess all of her crazy antics yesterday wore her out. She had a quiet, lazy night.
The dripping has stopped pretty much. Her bag is so full she is walking funny.
She just waddles around.
VirginiaBred
Mar. 20, 2008, 12:56 PM
Is she waxed up Genevieve?
genevieveg17
Mar. 20, 2008, 01:52 PM
Yep. She has had wax for weeks. Big globs. Last week her milk turned white and she began having little drips of sticky white milk (think Elmers Glue). Her vulva is very relaxed considering she is a maiden. Suerte has been banned from the pregnant mare pastures because we all know how she likes to tell stories. The folks on MareStare are convinced she left a foaling guide hidden somewhere in the barn.

SSDD (Same Sophie Different Day)
She knows I am suppose to be away with family on Easter Sunday and she is crossing her legs until she is home alone. She honestly can not keep holding this baby in much longer.
She is really uncomfortable, wants to stay close to her stall. She wandered around a little and grazed but that was only for 15 minutes or so and she headed back to her paddock.
I think today would be a lovely day for her to foal. Now if I can just convince her.

Just curious Geneive, what is your mare always eating out of the bucket? Does she get hay or do you feed cubes or ? She seems always to be munching from there so was just being nosy as to what she was eating.

Her broodmare pellets are in there but also a mineral salt brick that she likes to pick up with her teeth and bang it around the bucket. She is weird.
She has hardly eaten any of her pellets or grain. She has been playing with it but most of her ration is still there from her lunch. Her hay bin is still full. She is one crabby mare this afternoon.

Has anyone checked out
http://www.marestare.com/bickramside.php
A mare named Mak in Scotland. On Feb 27, her due date was in 19 days, so by today she is overdue. Boy she looks big and round.. It's 1:40 in the morning over there. She had been awake and looking at her belly, but she seems to be napping standing up right now.
M. Owen
Mar. 22, 2008, 10:24 PM
The Scottish mare may be just fooling me, but she may be ready to go! I've never watched any of these foal cams before, but I am addicted already. The Scottish mare kicked at her belly a couple of times, did a funny stretch thing, then laid down. Is that a good sign?
Sigh, I see a new addiction forming.
Stacie
Mar. 22, 2008, 10:37 PM
I haven't watched this mare before so I don't how she usually behaves, but it looks like she is having some contractions while she is laying there. Either that or she breathes REALLY deeply sometimes  I can't tell which
She isn't moving her tail out of the way, though. I take that back. That is her leg that I thought was her tail. She does have her tail out of the way.
She was very uncomfortable when she was standing and would try to stand very still and then get agitated do the two-step behind.
I'm going to continue this on "anyone watching foal cams"

I've NEVER seen a mare lay down as much as she does! And I always think "not tonight" when I see her napping -- but really, with as much time as she spends sleeping, who KNOWS! OK good news. Amazingly nothing is broken. There is muscle damage but that should resolve on its own. He is unable to get up on his own so he has a harness so I can assist.
He has figured out the nursing thing so now it is up to Sophie to settle down. She is definitely out of the running for any mother of the year awards but hopefully she will mellow out.
So if I could get some help watching him. I need to know when he lays down, right or left side, for how long and a call if I do not show up when he struggles to stand. Sorry, I know it is a lot to watch for but I could really use the help. Oh yeah, he also has only passed a small amount of meconium. We think it is because he is so sore in his back that it hurts to strain. If you can tell if he poops that would be great.
I will post photos after I take a shower. Thanks again
Genevieve

Thanks for posting the update Wildredhorse.
Yes he is going to be ok. The contraption is just a harness so I can assist when he struggles to stand. He is a big colt with long legs so getting up was a challenge even before Sophie put her 2 cents in. She is a maiden and just got nervous.
He is walking really well and hopefully will be good as new in a few days.
Della is locked in her paddock until Sophie settles down.

It's not unusual for maiden mares to get confused. She just pawed him to get him up, she's been very good for a maiden. He has really long legs and wasn't able to stand right away. My Sir Caletto's were very big also with long legs and they couldn't stand right away. It's one of the reasons we breed to Sir Caletto to get those beautiful long legs but sometimes it takes a minute for the babies to figure out how to work them. He's fine and in a few days this will be all resolved.

He is probably not doing too bad actually. He was down all morning after his birth-just layed around seeming to enjoy the fluffy straw. Then, when the accident happened, he was down and sedated for a while so he really did get to rest then as well. I'm sure he is tired-he's been on his feet a long time for a newborn having gone through what he did but I'm sure he'll just topple over when he can't take it anymore (assuming he doesn't choose to lay down on his own ;)) :D

Vet Update...
Good news. She saw improvement with his back. He also recieved a soapy, mineral oil enema to help get things moving. He is passing some really hard meconium balls so hopefully now we will start seeing milk poop.
I took his harness off because he was just not laying down and started wondering if the harness was somehow restricting him. Makes it a little harder to get him up but he is getting so much stronger it seems he just needs a little tail holding for balance and he gets up on his own.
He is an active little guy. He seems to enjoy kicking his Mom.
So, really hoping we see improvement tomorrow and he will be more coordinated.
Also, I think his name will be Salutations. I liked Spring Fling but he is to serious for that name. His barn name is Stanley.

Stan the tail-wingin' man.
I watched last night as he tryed those legs out and all I could think was "What a happy tail" It's still such a propeller. I really like this young man.

He is on cam2 now. Had a little computer glitch and I started unplugging wires and cables.
What a mess.

The lights in the barn are off and it's dark outside. Now that Sir Stanley has figured out his legs G is turning the lights off so Chop Chop will go to bed early  She shut the cam off last night and only put it back on this AM. I'm willing to bet it'll be shut off eventually tonight as well.
No worries though! It's on all day so we can see Stan the man cruising in and out of his stall! :D

Since you don't get to check often, here are some pix/vids of Stanley and Sophie:

The first link is a video of the munchkin on his first day out on the grass. The second link is the nursery thread on maresatare but if you scroll down a little on that last page there are a couple pix. The third link gives you the pages in the title that have pix/video.

Thanks!!
Oh my gosh, he is too cute! His first day here was a bit intense and it's so nice to see him running around, even though Sophie is having to work to keep up with him. :)

Yeah, once he figured out those legs it was almost like he dared her to keep up with him ;)
In fact, the next day when I got home from work I turned the cam on just in time to see him come flying into the barn, attempt to turn around sharply and actually topple over  Silly pony! He just got himself up and continued on his merry way. The next loop that brought him back into the barn showed a much larger turn to avoid that toppling problem
As funny as it was, it was also such a relief to know he was acting like any other normal foal after the rough start the poor guy had

I was home from work the day he arrived and was watching the cam a lot. I sent the link to my hubby (generally a non-horse type of guy) and he was caught up in the drama as well. We remininisced about when we tried the breeding thing with our mare 8 years ago; watched her struggle with the mom concept in nursing her filly for a bit while being very protective initially, then became the best mom, much like Sophie. While we lost our mare to colic later that year, I still have her youngster, so watching Sophie and Stanley has been a little bittersweet but heavy on the sweet side.
It's great to see how well Stanley and Sophie are doing. Thanks again for the extra links!

Thanks! Stanley is fabulous. He is driving his poor mom crazy.
I am so sorry to hear about your mare Sanely Eccentric. Colic scares the bejeezus out of me.

Genevieve - thank you.
It has truly been a pleasure being able to watch Sophie and Stanley, as well as remembering "back when." Sophie reminds me much of my mare as she entered the world of motherhood and worked hard to keep up with an active and brave foal. Her filly is now a grown mare that is trying to learn dressage with me.:)
Thanks again for sharing!

Here is a photo of Stanley from this morning.
SE - you are right on describing Sophie. She was a little overwhelmed at first but has really adapted to the whole mothering thing!
Have fun with your mare.
