What do you pay for routine gelding?

I know what my vets charges, but like everything else, prices seem to vary depending upon location.

Am just trying to establish the US aggregate.

All input is appreciated as we're negotiating the sale of an ungelded colt and need to agree on a dollar value for the gelding.

Mods: Sorry if this should be under horse care...

 $170 CDN for an on-farm castration, including the farm call and the anesthesia... no bute, no antibiotics and no tetanus booster (given that the horse is up-to-date on his shots).

We don't give antibiotics unless there is a problem.

No bute as we want to make sure they pay attention to their new bodies and don't start running around as idiots  My vet asks that I leave the new gelding in a stall for a few hours until it is no longer druggy and send it off to pasture with a quiet pasture mate and hand walk for 15 minutes daily for a week-10 days.

Works perfectly and I have yet to have a problem.

In my backyard, 2 year old colt, two weeks ago - $230 - included IV sedation, the vet (surgeon), the assistant (intern), and 2 techs......and guess who ended up holding the horse, administering the additional IV seds 'cause the intern couldn't hit the vein, and sitting on his neck 'cause he really wasn't fully under????? ME! oh...I did get a 10% professional discount 'cause I'm a small animal vet who use to work for the very same equine practice. Almost, and I mean ALMOST, made me want to buy a set of emasculators so I can do it myself the next time but in all honesty since I'm no longer doing it day in and day out, I'd rather pay someone else to do it.

$135, farm call and all - we laid him down in a clean grassy field, then left him out to walk around full time for a week. The vet even took out his wolf teeth while we had him down, which is an excellent idea. The free walking made the healing easy and simple. And I am soooo glad that I gelded him. He LOVES females. He's a nuisance with them even as a gelding, he would have been a real handful left as a stud.

p.s. the world already has way too many stallions as it is IMHO.

i just paid $269.50 for a colt under a year old, but that also included his second series of shots, which were probably about $30-50. we did him standing in his stall and he didn't need any bute or antibiotics.

Dunno, I'll let you know on Friday when my 07 colt gets gelded. Good Friday seems like a good day to geld, doesn't it?

Here it is:

$85 total at the UF Vet School. You drop them off in the AM and pick them up in the late afternoon.

I have heard around $250 for a vet to come on the farm but I always take mine to the vet school. They check on them all the time while they are there and I have never had complications. They send a complete report home too!

Routine castration, standing or laying down is $100. That includes the tetanus if the horse isn't up to date. That is the in clinic price, which is pretty much the same for all the clinics in our area. Farm call would be additional depending upon mileage.

The last one I had done a few years ago was $300 something. I just called to make an appointment for one today, but didn't ask price.

On a side topic- out of curiosity... does anybody go by the moon for gelding? I know I have for weaning & it's always worked out well.

$265 plus vet call.

I was told if I have one done who is younger than a year, the vet will also pack the scrotum which means another vet call the following day. I'm waiting on that guy.
