I like the one I got at Lowes! The camera was cheap, the cable was the expensive part....but necessary here too with a bank barn that is a combo of stone and metal siding over concrete block to an old farmhouse with double course brick!!

Exactly what KIND of cable do you buy? I did find a complete wired system from one of the horsie places for $299 with everything - so if I know what kind of cable to price I could figure out if that is a good deal? Do you remember?

Here is a link - these people are great - and reasonable for a wired system

http://www.foalingcamera.com/wired_barn_cameras.html

click on pricing - really similar to your Lowe's - but comes with Tech Support if needed

Happy foaling

We got our system from http://www.123cctv.com/ Very good customer service and prices, and it included the coax cable.

Well I went the expensive route and bought connecting extension cords (more expensive than roll by the wire that will be permanant) because we only foal out about 2 mares a year. The barn is on the other side from a driveway so I can't DIG to bury a permanant cable from the house to the barn. If I did something permanant I would have to go up and OVER the driveway...too much trouble for 2 horses....SO...during foaling season I just run the extension cord across the driveway, in the window and in the house where I am comfy on the sofa....and hubby is in his bed not having to listen to farting/snoring horses and barn cat fights on the monitor!! When I get up in the morning I unhook the cable on the driveway, roll it up in the barn on a hook by the door (other end still hooked up to the cameras) so hubby does not smoosh the cable driving over it when he leaves for work! The lovely thing about this is that I can move my monitor around. When the weather is crappy (cold or rainy) I sleep in the house. If it is a later foal and the weather is nicer I move my set up to the hayloft over the foaling stall, set up my monitor and sleeping bag on a nice little pile of haybales.
Tasker has this down even better. She pitches a tent in the barn....reason being the barn cats are all too happy to share her sleeping bag! I can see the issue....though we only have one barn cat that feels the need to bunk down on the foot of my sleeping bag. The rest of 'em are semi wild...not friendly enough to want to share my beddie bye!

Unless things have changed since we installed our system, coaxial cable is what is needed. I'm a little confused about the post where you could use extension cords, as that isn't the same thing. Our barn has electricity, but the coax cable we strung through trees to the house, and that is required for the signal.

camohn...funny you should mention the tent! I am in the middle of pricing out the camera/cable thing like you have used. These cold nights and an early foaling have me dreading setting up camp!!! :sigh:

So, I think I am heading to Radio Shack tomorrow to buy the wire & camera. Oh and a cheap-o TV to put in the upstairs of my house for many nights of All Mare TV.

I got all our stuff at X10.com and am very happy with it.
I have a full metal barn and it can get lines some, but still very visable to watch the mare and the house is 1000ft from the barn.

The one we have is coaxial cables that come in 50' sections and plug together like an extension cord. You are correct is is coaxial cable.

My Lowes set came with the monitor screen!!
Huh. I looked at the Lowes website. Nada on there for the camera.I looked at the set I have and it is made by GE. Radio Shack does have the (extension) cable though!

they have other lengths and prices too.
At Radio Shack they do have one similar to the one I have....mine is a 2 camera and monitor set by GE for the 2 foaling stalls.....but is a lot like this one......

I use a method someone told me about and it works great. Sleep all night with the volume on the monitor turned up full blast. You do sleep like &%$@ the first couple nights...but then you are so tired and acclimated to the background noises in the barn that you only wake up for big noises/grunts/groans and can learn to tune out farting horses and squalling barn cats. (I am a light sleeper so it does work for me. As a backup I do have an alarm clock that goes off every 2 hours as well. I don't DEPEND on it!! ) Probably not a reccomended method for that sleep like the dead!
