Hi guys,

I don't really have a whole lot to say.

The horse I had ridden in the two clinics with Jimmy died today in a freak barn accident. No one was at fault. Just bad luck.

He went quickly and I wish I could say I held strong, but I didn't. I was very emotional for a horse I have barely known since January.

Please just hug your horses. He was only 5.

Lad is fine. This wasn't him. He didn't understand why I was trying to hug him so tight, so he bit me ;) Damn horse.

I am sorry, I think most of us have been there in one way or another. It HURTS! Especially when you lose them suddenly.

I watched my gelding slip and shatter his leg after 7 years together

Hugs to you.. times does heal, and it sounds like you have other horses to love on... that helps too..

Emily,

I am sorry to hear about your horse. I am sitting here with tears in my eyes, but laughing at the same time. I had a horse die last year that was close to me, and I went out to hug my 6 year old. He bit me too! Lad and Mo sound like kindred spirits!

I know what your going through and that its no fun. I had to put down my old pony 3 weeks ago and I think that is the worst thing I have ever had to do. Keep your head up and remember that your horse looked after you while he was on earth and now he is looking down at you every day keeping a watchful eye. Horses never really leave us because everything they have taught us and all the good times/memories are with us forever.

Best wishes,
Nate and Rolly

Oh Emily.

I'm so very, very sorry. Godspeed to him who went too soon, peace to you and comfort in knowing it was over quickly for him.

I know you said it was no one's fault, but please do not torture yourself with any "what ifs". Sometimes, what happens isn't about us. It's about the horses, and we can't know why it happened as it did.

Please take care of yourself while you are hurting, and keep hugging Lad. He'll get used to it eventually.

As usual the COTH community continually surprises me with the support levels available here just from an occasion of life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

A couple things to mention, since I think there may be some misunderstanding and I want to clear any confusion.

The horse was a homebred bred by my employers. I have been riding him since January. That being said there are many others that have swung a leg over his back and by far my employer deserves great amounts of credit for making him as nice as he is... was. :( I was just lucky enough to ride him now when his brain was getting past the juvenille playfulness and into "Ok give me a job" mode.

Jimmy adored him in the first clinic and was telling me that I should "Steal him" from my employers. I explained (humbly) that this may not be the best career move!!

I relayed what Jim said to the Mr. Boss and he laughed and said he was confident that Mrs. Boss would let me compete him etc. I was looking forward to it.

Even when he allowed me to "Fly like a Dodo" I laughed since it was a joyous buck that sent me flying.

My bosses had the highest hopes that he would be their Maryland Hunt Cup runner. And with the average age of a hunt cup starter being around 9-12 yrs old, this was a great way to start. He had hunted with Cheshire (not with me) and he was a 'freak' of a jumper. All ability and an amazingly cadenced stride.

The people suffering the most are handling this loss with grace and a exterior calm that comes with having been lifelong horsemen who have seen "Sh*t happens" many times too many.

I feel most for them and was impressed with how we all got through today. It had it's hard moments. I cleaned his stall, and looked at the piece of duct tape on the door with his name on it. I haven't yet had the ability to make my hand swipe that tape off the door.
But then I think its not my job. His breeders should be allowed to mourn at their own pace and I won't rush them.

And later we went out to the gallops and went up the long hill. The horse I was on today is a nice horse but his stride doesn't come close to the green bean's. And I galloped here a week ago and I recall thinking then how amazing the stride was and how easy it would be to make time at events... Ah well.

Thanks again for all your kind words.

I have explained to the owners and they appreciate all the thoughts.

~Emily

PS: Lad will never get used to big hugs. And nipping is his favorite pasttime. Don't want to change that, he uses it when I need that attitude on course.

It is so hard sometimes to try to separate love for the dance from love for the dance partners.

We all love a sport where the partners just do not have the same life span.

One...is always too short.

But that's about right, because they are the pure ones, who stand for generosity, courage, athleticisim.

While we complicate everything, shade everything...and have to hang around longer until we learn to be pure like our partners.

So sorry for this loss.
