Who are the smaller ammy-friendly hunter stallions out there under 16h?

Thinking along the lines of desiring a small jr. hunter, who would you consider breeding to??

Shine throws smaller, and I think Escudo II would be a great option as well. Larry's Hat is only 15.1, he would need a bigger mare but may be something to look into. Carbardino may be another great option (a small 16h). Donarweiss is smaller, though not proven in the hunter ring, he is quite a spectacular mover and received great jumping scores at his inspection, he is someone to look into.

Jupiter is smaller (15.3), but not sure if he consistently throws smaller.

Thats all I can come up with right now, I too like the smaller ones!

Depending on how big your mare is you may want to look into Empire's Power. He is 14.2 and VERY level headed and pretty. Would add the cute pony look to the larger warmblood and be very ammie friendly.

I think Donarweiss is a great candidate for a small junior type sire...

you may want to look at our stallion. He is the Enrico Caruso line, they aren't known for being large. My stallion is just under 15.3hh right now, I suspect he may reach 16hh. He moves well, and jumps well too. I will have some jumping photos and video up of him within the next month or so. He is going to start his over fences training in April. (he will be my dressage horse, but the hunter trainers around here sure like him as well) He is VERY ami friendly, as are all of his siblings. They are quiet and not spooky.

If you're looking for classic hunter looks, as previously mentioned, Larry's Hat is an excellent choice.

Can Larry's Hat jump? He is adorable!! I would be really nervous about breeding to a stallion that size for a SM JR hunter unless I knew he had the step and scope for the 3'6"....but that is just me ;)

Chaleon wasn't mentioned yet and not sure if he has offspring competing age the rest below do and all have had Small JR Hunters

Fabriano
Silvio
Escudo I and II
Calido
Mont Du Cantal ( not sure if you can get semen)
Quick Star
Pablo
Chinook
Heartbreaker
Farmer
For Pleasure
Goodtimes
Coriano
Spectacular Bid
Raja Baba
Darco
Voltaire

I know there are more but looking at the USEF list of top Small Hunters these are the sires.....Rio Grande actually had a Small but I certainly would consider that unusual he usually has big offspring.

You should check out Claim to Fame. He's 16.1 and has thrown 16 hand foals with smaller mares.......he's drop dead gorgeous and as sweet and easy as you could ever want. He's been proven in the hunter ring himself in big A shows in both professional divisions and with his "older" adult amateur owner......me! He's won lots of championships.....and now his foals are too!!

How big is the mare? Navarone would be another good option, but just like the other 16h stallions mentioned, I wouldn't breed him to a mare over 16h.

Has anyone seen any Larry's Hat offspring, what is the step like?

I was thinking along the lines of finding a match for a 15-3 7/8 mare to get a small jr hunter

...but at the same time, let me ask this: We also have a big 17.2+h hunter mare that I'd love to try to get a smaller hunter out of (not necc. small jr size, just smaller). What is the maximum size difference gap you would recommend in selecting a stallion for a situation like that?

I second Jupiter -

What about Escapade? He is not too big... and very hunter type.

Jupiter
Shine
The Escudos
Empire's Power
Nevada

These would all be very good choices.

I would not have a problem going significantly DOWN in size on the stallion if you really want a smaller foal. If you bred to a significantly smaller stallion though, I would still expect the offspring to tend to go bigger than the average of the two parents.

Wow, I really like that Larry's Hat horse. Does anyone know what he tends to throw size wise?

What about for non pony mares? Does he throw larger than himself?

I think so, but I"m hoping lauriep will weigh in here. I've seen some lovely babies in the Hunter Breeding at Upperville and Devon by him.

He has size on both sides of his pedigree.

'Course, this has nothing to do with under 16 hands, but tight there in Florida is a stunningly gorgeous TB............Formal Dinner. I think he is awesome......

For a mare that measure's so close, I'd take a peek at her bloodlines - you might have to be careful that you don't end up with something over 16h with some of the guys mentioned. I like Ladybugs list, would have to think about the Escudo's, they seem to range from 16.-16.2ish consistently, but Escudo II might make a great match for the 17.2h mare.

I really like Larry's Hat :)

Jupiter does consistently throw about his same size. Out of the half dozen or so that I have personally seen, none were over 16.1 and most at or under 16 hands. Click on his headshot for a video of him...just gorgeous! Of course I have reason to be impartial. ;)

I also really like the looks of Redwine but know little about him or his offspring. He is listed as 16.1

Fancy hearing about Larry's Hat on this forum. He lives up the road from me. He is a beautiful mover and came from Virginia where he bred fancy ponies, I believe.

What about some of the Best of Luck offspring??

Mar. 12, 2008, 12:16 PM
All the ones that I know are 16'1" give or take but I don't know of any "smalls". With the smaller mare it might be an option especially with More than Luck since he has Zeus and is a little smaller but I think his offspring are all really young so it is hard to say what he throws. Nice stallions!

Issue Of Gold is a pretty cute guy. http://www.norsirefarms.com/issue.html

Below is Aussie White Gold a palomino gelding and Indiscreet a palomino mare. Last photo is of Issue Of Gold.

So far, the foals of More Than Luck are long legged and will mature bigger than their sire. They are very athletic and smart and lovely to handle, just like the foals of Just The Best. The Best of Luck blood runs very true and it is easy to see him in all of the foals of his sons and daughters.

We have had good success with Lordship son, Landonn.

He appears to size foals based upon the height of the mare he is bred to. He was bred to a 14 h hunter pony in 2006, and the filly will measure 14h now, and probably mature around 15h. She is very typey, and an excellent jump. She was bred specifically for a small amateur for the hunters. IHF nominated.

My young stallion is completely unproven, but take a look at his pics - he has the technique, it's consitent, and he's 15 hands. Also "Ammy" and "Junior" rider friendly.
