View Full Version : BB recommendations for COTHers, by COTHers

Moderator 1
Feb. 10, 2008, 10:31 AM
In the past we've been quick to close threads started with requests for suggestions for other boards like COTH that deal with other topics (dogs, cats, etc.) in order to keep things horse-related.

After recently seeing a great thread in Horse Care started by a new horse owner that found our board through a dog board, we wanted to try a new approach.

If you have another great, helpful BB or list you'd like to recommend, let your fellow COTHers know on this thread, or if you'd like to find an equally fabulous alpaca breeders forum, Bengal cat discussion list or car shopping site, you can ask for suggestions here.

Try to keep general chit-chat limited to keep the thread concise and remember that you can use the "search within this thread" function to look for specific topics that may have already been suggested.

If you bold the main subject matter of the site and/or put it in the title of the post it'll make it easier to find. Also, be sure to hit the alert button on posts with links to inappropriate content or advertising (this is not a place to post links to your farm's website, your own tack store, etc.)

Thanks and hope this thread will be useful!

I'm glad Mod1 resurrected this thread -- I thought it was a great idea, and was sorry it didn't take off.

I am looking for an online LLAMA community -- not packing or fiber specifically, more just care, training, etc.

GREAT idea! I always wondered about doggy forums. Someone on this board helped me a ton on an OT day. I had taken a neigborhood dog (now ours!) to a vet to find out why he was losing hair. Temporary fix and then it happened again. Luckily an OT day on COTH surfaced and someone suggest food allergies- Sure Enough! No more hair loss, looking good.

Great idea, thanks mods. We get so much great info from here, why not spread the wealth. I know I talk up the COTH board whenever I can. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

reefbuzz.com is also VERY good. The people are realy nice. Have a newbie section, and a chat room where you can go and chat with people and ask questions. I recently started a 55 gallon (recently as just picked up tank and put 2/3 of the water in yesterday and now waiting on a 50 pound rock shipment to come in) and have asked so many questions from them and gotten very very good and helpful answers.

I wanted to let everyone know about a new horse friendly website called zootoo.com. In a way it is similar to facebook or myspace but for animal people. There are many really neat aspects of this site. You are able to "share, connect, and help" with other horse people. By this, I mean you can discuss horse products, vets, farriers, trainers, etc. and get ratings or post ratings. You can also meet other equestrians in your area and find people to ride with or travel to shows with. On top of that, every time you create ratings, upload pictures, create discussions, etc., you earn points. These points can then be used to help an animal shelter or a rescue program of your choice! It has already been featured on Ellen, the Pet Business, and Daily News.

You should definitely get on and create a page. I think this could really be something great for the horse community.

For those who are looking to "do it yourself" and want to save money - don't have to own a farm, but many do:

www.homesteadingtoday.com

has: various subforums which include:

Homesteading - farm, pasture, wells, fertilizers, anything to do with maintenance in and around the farm;
Countryside families - issues related to the family and homesteading/farming

Equine
Cattle
Swine
Dog/Cat/Pets
sheep and goats
chickens/ducks/geese

and for the crafty types: sewing, quilting, making stuff

canning, gardening, a general chat about whatever is currently happening in the world,
and a Singles forum for those who live singly on a farm and how to cope with all the work, looking for a partner, etc (has a good rate of success in the partnering area due to same sort of interests);

The equine section has a variety of people and breeds represented/disciplines represented. Very nice down to earth bunch of people.
I think there are now 15,000 plus members on this site and growing daily.

Here's a link for a wheelchair that one family built. http://www.instructables.com/id/Dachshund-wheelchair/

I wrote an article for Dog and Kennel magazine a few years ago that included photos of another homemade wheelchair. I also found a used cart through Doggon' wheels for my own ACD in 2004. If you would like a copy of the magazine article and homemade cart photos, PM me your address!

There are lists of used K9 wheelchairs, wanted and for sale, online. You might be able to get one for about $150 if you can find your size available. I know that when my Mirri died, her cart was sold very cheap to another dog in need. Here's one link, but I think you may find a better list elsewhere. http://www.handicappedpet.net/class/index.php

Thank you so much didgery!! I really appreciate your help. Yesterday we put my poor dog on Tramadol (a cancer patient pain medication) and it's not even touching his issue. :( I hope it works better as it gets into his system. He's only had 4 doses so far. He's dead lame on both hind legs. He had extensive surgery in one from a car accident years ago and now I think he's blown out the ACL (CCL) in the other leg. He has another appointment tomorrow morning.

I will check out the links, thank you again.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned thenest.com it's a big forum that has boards relating to all different everyday things like cooking, pets, money, decorating and renovating, etc. They have a HUGE section on pregnancy and babies. It started as a newlywed forum as a spin off to theknot.com (a big wedding planning forum) basically for a place for people to continue to chat after their weddings about home etc. related stuff. they have a few boards that are mainly regulars and don't stay on topic and they also have local boards that are awesome to chat with people in your area and have get togethers. I've been adicted to the knot and the nest boards for years. lol

www.thecatsite.com/forums/ is the best out there, IMO. Hundreds of cat owners who have seen everything, and it's very rare that I've found them all stumped by something. I love that forum, it's one of the few forums that I check every single day, lol

If anyone likes Japanese dogs, there is a forum specifically for them.

Most people aware of Akita Inu and Shiba Inu, but there are actually 6 different breeds total (the others are Shikoku Inu, Kai Ken, Kishu Inu, and Hokkaido Inu).

My preferred breed is the Shikoku Inu (www.shikokudog.com (http://www.shikokudog.com))

Any suggestions for popular Canadian-based dog websites or bulletin boards? Some have some good lists of off-leash parks (tricky to find, in our area!).

A neat board that is really laid back and flame free. Also a great place for you to grow your small equine business, and order neat stall signs: www.saucypiaffe.com/BB

Anybody know of a good forum for human Lymes Disease? There's so much info out there that I don't know what I can trust on the internet.
