I've been watching this foal for a bit, and read somewhere that this foal was born yesterday or early today, but her original due date is around March 5th. What is the likelihood of a baby born 40 days early making it (my one and only foal was born smack dab on time)? The owners seem to be spending a lot of time with her, trying to bottle feed her, get her to nurse, but she doesn't seem to be doing much. They just picked her up and laid her down and then covered her all up in blankets. The mare does not really seem that interested. I hope this baby is a fighter.

It depends on why it was so early. Some are born early and are fully mature/just cooked fast. Others are early because the dam had placental issues and they are underdeveloped.Of course case number one is a much better prognosis. On the whole there is a 30 day window on either side of a "due date". My mare that foaled 30 days early had a preemie looking foal that had to be bottle fed for 6 days before he could stand. She was a great momma and he was a fighter so he did OK.

I've been watching that one, too, and really wonder if the breeding dates got mixed up. The vet report came in really good for her. Her only problem seems to be the shunt in her heart hasn't closed yet, which is pretty common. Her IgG came in at 1000 and lungs are clear. I find it hard to believe that she is only 299 days gestation.

Is the baby presumed alive? I've been watching a bit, and while the mare seems rather unconcerned, she does check out the baby a few times.

The foal is alive. The vet was out earlier doing a full exam.
It is my understanding there was problems with the placenta. I hope the little filly is a fighter.

All I'm getting is a completely black screen with the bottom saying "playing." Which it is not! Is anyone else having trouble connecting?

Bridget, if you are on AOL sometimes it has issues with certian cams & will not connect. I am not having a problem with this one & I am on AOL, but usually using IE instead fixes the problem. Don't know if that helped at all.

Thanks Stacey! :) I can see the picture today and it looks like the little filly is still in there if it is the same mare and foal. I can't wait for mine to FINALLY be done!!!

I have had problems with AOL a lot recenly, so this my explain it. But I don't want to give up my aol account since I've had it for years and don't want to give up my e-mail address. When I sent clients listings for real estate it will sometimes send the listing above or below the one I clicked onto to send. I would be saying great listing here and my client would say, but..but..and once I realized what was going on, I called the MRIS people and the first question was do you use aol or are you mailing to and aol account...bingo there's your problem...and it is random..sometimes it works fine...oh well..AOL!

This is the first time I've seen the baby up! And how cute she is with her teeny blanket on (seriously, the baby and the blanket look smaller than my dog!!)
Fight, little one...Fight!

I have been watching this baby from the get go.......and she has been doing amazing since the start.....she has had a few brief periods in the first 24 hours that was really touch and go.....but is a real fighter.....The mother is actually extremely attentative but letting the humans do what is necessary for her little one....I think the mare has a sixth sense that her baby needs help..........they are picking the filly up and laying her down as the want to protect her joints......and they cover her up to keep her warm as her body is unable to regulate properly yet.....plus it is really cold there.

I heard talk that is is possible that they might have been out 3 weeks with the date....which makes more sense considering how this filly is doing..........foals are not usually viable before 300 days and this filly was born at 299?

Glad to see the foal doing so well. Someone was just in milking the mare, and it was clear that the filly has learned what that is all about. She was right there, with her cute pink blanket, clearly watching the whole process. She was being quite the little pest and following the person around the stall, wanting her bottle BAD! So cute. I like watching their other cam as well, with the colt. He's funny and seems so full of himself -- man, maybe I should have bred my mare again.

Thought every body would like to hear the good news....Scrappy figured out how to nurse on her own last night.......and is now doing it on a regular basis......she still gets a bottle every 3 hours or so to top her off......but this is one smart, determined girl.
