Will let you know if they can help.

Ted is 15. I mentally compared him with Pooh, and my heart just sank. Poor Pooh, and his friend.

Doesnt that just break Lori's heart. I wish I could, I wish I could but since there is no hay shortage here, guess I cant. God knows how I will feed them.

OH my...that is just heartbreaking.

One completely blind and the other blind in one eye?

Are there any rescues near them? I opened the map and see they are near I-95.

How many more like this will there be this year with the hay shortage?:(

LMH you cant believe how our phone rings for kids just like these two. I had two dropped off at the pasture gate a month or so ago. Sadly, I have come to love those two little old ladies so, another two stalls occupied. No matter what, I see hay listed for sale. Shipping is so high, the hay is high priced and so far, the quality of what I have
seen gets worse and worse. Sadly, I got in 5 siezures last year which I am unable to place due to the law. While owners go to court, I am feeding them and five starving horses burned through a ton of my bermuda hay, never mind the alfalfa. I am unable to replace it unless I either travel or.............pay an exhorbant amount for shipping. Neither sits well with me.

But, these are the kind of kids who melt me. Doesnt Pooh just look like he needs a warm blanket, and a kind hand.

:( Poor guys. Isn't there a rescue up north somewhere that specializes in the care of blind horses? It seems I remember a thread about a blind mare foaling out at a rescue in GA and then once the foal was strong enough they were sent to that rescue. Acey and Pumpkin were their names

My oh my..there are just some things even I can't believe..I don't know anything about taking care of totally blind horses, though am not adverse to one that is half blind.

Had an arab x mare that was missing an eye here..best little young rider horse ever..won in most of her classes in eventing, also did the pony races at the Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens, came in 4th and she had NEVER raced before..her owner gave me his medal that he won..I still have it hanging next to my computer at the house. Kid graduated and gave the horse to another child. She carted that kid around on trails at the age of 25 and as far as I know, she's still alive and well. Never seemed to bother her only having one eye. She was a $300 sack of skin and bones that was on her way to the kill sale. I grabbed her up and she rode like a dream once she got some weight on her and I convinced the parents to buy her for their kid. Best little horse ever..so appreciative..and loved. Her name was Ginger and she was a flea bit grey mare, arab x.

sigh..I so hate to see these ads. I really, really do.

Lori, how much hay would you need to take on a couple more beasties? Maybe we could do a 'hayraiser'? Do you have any fairly healthy soundish beasties that need a home? I have a friend who is looking for a safe (not overly ancient - she has plenty of those) beastie.

I guess what I'm asking is if we could get you some hay and make some room, could you/would you think about taking these guys on? They're breaking my heart

I'm in S. Carolina, pretty close. Has anyone contacted them to find out if they're still available? Don't want to call and make them think there's now a "demand" for them.

I do retiree boarding. Don't have experience with totally blind (would he "transfer" very well?) but the re-hab, senior care would be right up my alley. Just LOVE to see them bloom again with TLC.

Need some input on blind horse care before I could commit.

After six years of lurkdom on this forum, I'm finally coming out of my "lurky-lu" closet to post on this thread. These horses are within 20 miles of me and I felt "called" to respond to her need.

I feel that I know most of you already - and I realize that none of you have ANY idea who I am. I am always most impressed at the generosity and genuine empathy expressed by the posters on these threads regarding needy horses (usually the same folks). So, here is my report for what it's worth:

I called, left polite message offering assistance and support, she called me back. I drove over there at her request. She's legit, very nice woman. She has several VERY NICE horses in LOVELY shape.

She actually took these horses as a favor to someone some time ago. Got them in good shape - someone here locally offered to give them a good home, she let them go. Everything was good for awhile, then he developed "other interests" and according to her, she noticed they were being "starved down". She actually WALKED these horses several miles back to her place as no trailer was available. She has had them now just over a week. Her place is clean and well-kept, hayracks are full and the horses were content.

Pooh is "loffly" ole man, was definitely a nice well-trained mount in the past. Even several hundred pounds down and very tired, he has that "tb carriage".
Eye is clean, but he's definitely blind on left, has some rainrot. Otherwise seems in decent shape. I took MoCaraid's new plaid Landa (Christmas gift from my kids) with me just in case the situation was dire, and ended up loaning it to Pooh. He stood like a stone, even when the leg straps had to be altered to fit. Honest to Heaven, he must have worn something like it
in the past because he took on the "well it's about time someone gave me some respect" stance and raised that aristocratic head - and I wept. He needs a blanky.

Guss was born blind - she said "pig-eye"? Had been trained for trail work. He can see shadows, has lovely temperament, wants lovin', needs groceries. Followed us like a puppy but very respectfully. Would appreciate a blanket.
They both need farrier and dentistry.

She works hard to keep her own horses well cared for (and they are!). She cannot keep these two - wants to find safe, loving forever home for them where she can keep in touch and feel that they are well cared for.
A place where they could be loved on by children is her dream for them.

SunkissedAcres, Beastie Slave - ya'll would love these guys! They've been together for years and depend on each other for support. VERY kind horses.

I have offered to pay for coggins & health certificates. Meeting her this afternoon when vet comes. I am willing to haul them a reasonable distance
when the paperwork is in order, will take approximately two weeks.
I did explain to her that a rescue umbrella would give her an added layer of security for their future.

All in all, I feel they are in good hands and will be in much better shape by the time an appropriate new home is lined up and paperwork is ready.

I'm not a recognized rescue, just a horseowner who supports rescue efforts. This is a personal effort on my part to assist another horseperson who did the right thing for the horses.

I did a quick profile if ya'll want to check me out :)

Oh my goodness! I'm surprised and gratified, and I really don't know WHAT else to say - but I'll try
Thank you Liz ((HUGS))

I called everywhere within a 5 county area and the ONLY blanket in any store was the Weaver for Pooh - one prayer answered :)

We now have a blanket for Pooh, a very nice Weaver (78) navy/green trim job that he likes very much :)

Guss NEEDS a tan/burgundy (72) and is a little put out, because he can smell that Pooh has something nice even if he can't see it.

Cold drizzly rainy and their hips are sticking out catching the breezes :(
The vet was called to an emergency so vetting was rescheduled for Tuesday/Wednesday.

They both are in dire need of farriering (ahem, attn youknowwho) and dentistry. They are being well cared for and she will keep them until a good home is assured.

Now, as to your very generous offers that have me in grateful tears. My understanding on this forum is that folks soliciting funds must be 501c3. That's not me. So I'm confloozled and I do NOT want to fall afoul of any rules. Specially on my very first thread  PM me please, if that's allowed?

Although I would rather see them on their on their way somewhere before then.

On another note ,,I have an excellent source for tift 85 if anyone is coming up I 75 we can send the odd bale[round bale full size = $50.00 ,on up to where-ever these kids might end up.

Liz, could "our" farrier ink them in please? It will take at least that long to get the paperwork together.

And we're lookin' for that dentist too, so they'll look all spiffy when they get to their new digs ya know

As to the hay, I could probly find room for at least one round and a few squares in my "limousine" if we're going I75. Heck, if I tack the rear tack out we could get two rounds plus the horses - at least we could try - if that would sweeten the deal

ok ok, Sunkissed Acres can take the kids on. Heck, you cant count blind kids cause they cant see right. And like many others, so long as they keep moving hahahahaaha.

But sadly, Beastie, I have no horses for adoption. the calliber of horses abandonded here over the winter, and I do mean abandoned, is sad. Well, I dont find much sad about little old ladies or gentleman who want only to be loved, warm and fed. But, unfortunately, I am one of very few people who find any purpose in pasture ornaments. Sadly, the dont generate 5 cents but they cost a pretty penny. My logic, they arent here for long LOL what the heck is 5 or 6 years. heheehehehe

The kids need a place to go right, we are already good at blind.

I'm slowly getting an edification in the harsh economics of 501(c)(3) rescue. :(

What is REALLY needed for these 2 is ONGOING sponsorship. In all likelihood, neither one will be adoptable, and they will be here at Sunkissed Acres for life. As we all know, they never stop eating hay and grain!

I for one am glad Lori decided to take them in - Pooh looks like a grand old TB champion and will be treated as such :D - but if any of you, or a group of you, would like to send monthly donations for hay/feed/etc. for these two, that would be completely awesome.

Horseinc
Jan. 27, 2008, 08:04 AM
Sorry I don't get to read this great group very often but some of you horse lovers are great at forwarding me the thread when I am needed.

I am the rescue (www.SaveTheHorses.org) who had Acey, the blind mare and Pumpkin. http://savethehorses.org/ap-fund/. They were adopted by a private farm in TN. I will contact them and see if they can take these two needy horses. They have big hearts for blind horses. Keep your fingers crossed!

I have horses with COPD, Cushings, anhydrosis, cancer and more. I try to take in only the most needy and my phone rings off the hook with sad stories of broken promises to keep horses safe. Sometimes it isn't the owners fault but others times it is the owners choice because the horse has a problem...like 'I can't afford to feed a horse I can't ride'! DOES IT COST MORE TO FEED A HORSE THAT'S LAME???? These are the people rescues deal with too often, just those choosing to pass on their responsibility to a rescue. They want to think rescues have the money trees growing somewhere in the pasture.. Believe me, we don't!

I still have 3 blind horses here and 3 one eyed horses plus an array of disabled and gracefully elderly horses. We just lost or lovely almost 44 year old mare, Cricket. We had her for 8 wonderful years. It is heartbreaking to lose any one of them. Yes, hay is expensive, feed has gone up but we find a way to help. The horses we are talking about on Horseville will be safe for now. I told the lady who has them that I will pay for feed and hay until we find a permanent home. She assured me they are safe with her as long as I can help.

I wish I had room here but we time-share some of the stalls now. I have at least 85 horses! I am paying $9.75 a bale but they get what they need. I had 2 surgeries at Auburn University on Thursday. I truly believe this is what I am supposed to be doing on earth. Good deeds bring more good deeds. It works. I have been doing this since 1979 from a shoe string and it has grown to a respectable horse rescue. It is people like all of you who are vigilant on letting everyone know when a horse is in need.It is you that keep rescues going as well by your donation and your good will. We are all part of the circle that keeps horses safe from harm. Thank you all. I hope to have the time to visit your group more often but for now, it's out to the barn! I will let you know how the Horseville horses are doing and keep on looking for a home in case the TN family can't take them.

I love you guys.

And for clarification - Mods, please correct me if I am wrong - this was put on the Giveaways precisely because taking the horses to a private farm or sending money to an individual would be considered "soliciting." But we are allowed to PM back and forth.

Now that they would be going to a 501(c)3, we can be "open" about it.

Moderators - thank you so much for your understanding.

I am especially moved. My brother had been undergoing biopsies for a suspect cancer. It did not look promising - in fact, we were all convinced (including his oncologist) that it was simply a matter of how far it had progressed. When the final, most extensive biopsy came back, we were astounded and overjoyed to discover that while the cells are changing, my brother had dodged the bullet for now - which means that he will be closely watched, and we will catch it early.

My parents brought me up with a tradition: when something good happens, you share the joy. Even as a very young child, I participated. And so this time, because this was a really big thing, I wanted to do something. And for equine rescues- there is always a need. With all the issues with the Colorado horses and etc, I simply didn't know where to send money. When I saw Pooh, I knew.

I will be calling Lori to tell her. I will be one of Pooh's sponsors.

Thank you, everyone.

Full sponsorship would be $175 per month, per horse. That covers all feed, hay, grain, shavings, vet & farrier. It pretty much covers all costs for the horse.

I'm totally the newbie at Sunkissed Acres, but I wanted to say thanks so much to all y'all and especially Horseinc, Aiken4horses, and MoCaraid for getting this one rolling!

Thanks everyone. I am not feeling pressured at all to take in these guys. Pooh melted my heart. I am perfectly fine taking these two boys in, lots of love to spare. But, if Aiken4horses wants these two boys, or is in better shape to take them, that is fine too. I do think though WA has her heart set on Pooh LOL. I have called Amey, (owner)
and will find out what I can about the blind boy. One eyed guys are easy to deal with. I got some wooden fence posts from LMH last year and we are prepared to put in a new pasture for the blind guy. They love having lots of space to graze in. I am excited to meet these guys.

All we need to do is arrange shipping now. It sounded as though someone was prepared to bring them. We can meet if necessary. All I need to know is when to expect them or when I shall be driving. We have new purple blanket coming. Our blind guys wear purple so people know who is blind.

Horseinc. Thankyou for your wonderful post. Your longevity speaks for itself. I know all too well the phone calls and they are all deserving. One can only save so many though as it is.

Thankyou everyone for making it possible for these two kids to get a new home. And I am the lucky recipient. Hooray, Pooh is coming here. What is the other boys name?

I have not heard from Amey yet but hope to today. His living accomodations can be set up for as large as need be then, meaning pasture turnout.

WA may just have a riding partner after all. If Pooh is up for the job. HRH Avery is going to be too fat shortly for that sort of thing LOL
Noctis came down for a visit and groom session yesterday but I think only Angel was up for a ride so they didnt go. Now there will be two.

I think with careful rehab,he will be a nice horse for someone who does'nt want to get too serious about dressage.

He will probably make a nice alround friendly horse for an older experienced rider who Does Not want to pound the arena every day.

Ok, shipping is being arranged for these boys. I talked with Amey today and here is the rest of the scoop. It appears as though Pooh infact has EPM. He is not rideable any longer unfortunately. Amey was not too familiar with EPM so therefore, diagnosis will be upon his arrival. In any case, he is coming to his last home. If he has progressive EPM, we shall let him live out his life comfortably. If he is treatable, then we shall go ahead with the Marquis. Rescue really was his only option.

Guss it seems, in fact sees shadows. I suspect he is in fact near sited due to having what is known as "Pig Eye" Again, we shall see what the problem is upon arrival. Both sound sweet and Amey herself is coming with the boys.

WA and I shall undertake on Wed. increasing the pasture of the blind kids in order that Mr. Guss has enough room to graze with Lil Dot. Pooh will keep him company until he settles into his new surroundings and learns the fences and boundaries. Then we shall try Pooh out on the big pastures. This summer we shall beging cross fencing a 30 acre pasture in order that all the blind kids can have one large pasture that has no ponds or creeks on it.

I can hardly wait to put my neck into these guys and just love them. Really soon.

I just spent half-hour composing a long-winded thank you to every single person involved in helping these horses. Then, it disappeared and I was required to sign in again. It's gone  So, we re-type :(

I had just gotten off the phone with Amy. She told me about Lori at Sunkissed offering to take the horses. And Horseinc offering feed/hay.
We both wept with relief and happiness. I need windshield wipers for my eyes

Lori, you are a true angel here on this earth. Thank you, thank you, for taking in these two creatures. I love the purple blanket theme for the blind ones. Pooh has a blanket right now (needs 78) and I just ordered a blanket for Guss (needs 72) from Jeffers - will be here tomorrow.
So they will be warm for the trip, then perhaps the blankys can be used by others?

Vet comes tomorrow for coggins, etc., farrier on Feb 7 (yes, Fernie?), and I'm waiting on dentist to call me back.

YES, I am transporting all the way to SunkissedAcres and Amy will accompany me to see to the comfort of our equine passengers. I have 2500/diesel with Exiss 4/horse/LQ. All padded & comfy, my persnickety MoCaraid hath pronounced it a "limo ride" I don't know what it will cost, but I tend to "run on faith" anyway so we'll just ride it out & see what happens.

Horseinc, you've been a hero of mine for a loooong, loooong time. Some local "helpers" have come forward so Amy is covered for the feed/hay till the trip to Sunkissed. Your horsies come first, and I hope that folks will send some funds to see you through the winter. Bless you Cheryl :)

DressageGeek - thank you for sponsoring Pooh. I will keep your brother and family in prayer. I have a similar situation happening in my family as well.

BeastieSlave - thank you so much for offering to fundraise for hay. Sunkissed depends on all of us in order to keep taking in the needy horses.

Aiken4Horses - what a wonderful thing you've done! Remember - if you build it, they will come - we'll remember you "next time"

WarAdmiral - so glad to see you and HRH Avery are doing well. Faith and Prayer will guide us through the tunnel of darkness and into the glory of morning light "before the Devil even knows we're there" (sorry couldn't resist).

For anyone I've inadvertently overlooked, I apologize.

To the moderators, thank you so much for allowing this thread in the first place, and for your patience and kindess in allowing us to work this out in open forum. It is, after all, all about the horses and those who love them. :)

Can't wait to meet SunkissedAcres & WarAdmiral

Again, thanks for all you do! :D

...I'm presuming to speak on Lori's behalf 'cause she's out of range momentarily. Just wanted to say thanks so very much to all y'all for stepping up to help these horses! We planned out their pasture and stall space last night and this morning and so, weather permitting, we should be all set for their arrival - thanks to EVERYONE who has helped, is helping, or will help!!

Rest assured these guys will be spoiled rotten upon their arrival. ;)

MoCaraid, can't wait to meet you, as well!

As to donations, we can always use ANYTHING that anyone has to donate. Anything we can't use here at the farm goes straight to the store, where we sell it to raise money to support the loffly "kids" of Sunkissed Acres. It's been a pretty hard year here weather wise and of course forage wise, so any little dribble, no matter how small, is a huge help!!

Mailing address is on the web site, and web site will be updated as soon as I can manage to get unpacked enough to find my computer and digicam cables!

We'll keep you updated with a play-by-play on Pooh and Gus.

You'll have worked out by now that I'm the eternal optimist up here at Sunkissed, and I keep hoping against hope that Pooh's diagnosis is faulty. We'll know for sure soon enough, and I sure wouldn't mind some jingles for the boy!

Thanks and God bless to you all...

Sadly, I've seen Pooh move and I fear the worst  Jingles are appreciated.
Gus, on the other hand, moves out quite well and is accepting of "things that go bump" without panicing.
Ya just gotta admire animals that work things out for themselves

From Lori's post, it sounds like some fencing funds would be helpful. A 30 acre pasture is a LOTTA posts & nails!

Mich, Cara & Winterhawke,
Thank you for your kind words.

Too late, I sent a check to Amey's mother for $100. for 2 hay rolls. She said the 2 handsome boys will stay until coggons comes back, maybe 2 weeks. So the money is well spent. Have her use it for coggins, hay, anything to help the 2 boys. I wish them the best. EPM is very fragile. I hope he can be helped. He will be in good hands, both will be in good hands and in horsey heaven at Lori's.

It all got done because of everyone efforts. Everyone did something, even passing along the information and being cheerleaders, it all helps.

We need a thousand acre sanctuary for all the horses but until then, we will squeeze them in, help each other and make the world of horses the best we can. I know they'd do it for us! Whinnies!

Horseinc - Thank you so very much for keeping an eye on the situation w/ these guys and buying them hay until they can get up here. That is truly awesome of you!!

With all the loff these 2 have from everyone on this board, I feel pretty certain they will make the trip safely and have as bright futures as possible under the circs.

Jingles to Amy on the loss of her special friend. Hope she decides to join us here!

P4M - Maybe ask your barn's "A" team to box up & send whatever unclaimed "stuff" they end up with at the end of WEF? :D

MoCaraid - If Lori can't help on the waystations, send a PM to Cartfall or Horseyfolks on the Driving forum. They are card-carrying members of the Floriblah Clique, travel regularly up & down the east coast, and can steer you right.

Believe me, folks, at this point, even the tiniest little dribble of support is a very huge help. As we all know, Marquis ain't cheap, and Mr. Pooh is going to need all the help he can get!! I hate to keep passing the begging bowl, but we have 14 horses coming in within the next 2 weeks!!! Times are tight right now. While we are set for hay, thanks to a very kind guardian angel who prefers not to be named, we really are grateful indeed for every little dribble. They add up to happy healthy heese!

The horses are still in Kingsland ,Georgia???

If so ,all they need are current Coggins.

Kingland is North of the Florida /Georgia ag.station.Which is on the state line near Yulee.

There will not be a problem unless you are leaving the state, which I dont believe you are.

If they spot check you,the horses are moving with in the state, just show coggins.

Hey all, "Well today about 30 trees came down on the farm, just enough to block road to barn, tear down three separate fence lines etc. etc. So, I was on the saw all darn day, email didnt work at all and vet said she sent me an emergency email on several horses in the area. Wonderful, we have 14 horses set to come in in the next week and a half including these two boys. Everything from a 2 yr. old paint to a retiring Advanced Eventer.

Now, WA said we were set for hay but let me set the record straight. We have 400 bales coming in at a dear price at least. But it sure didnt take me long to blow through the 1600 I had in Nov. So, we will have hay for a very short time at least if it turns out to be good hay that is. Sight unseen. This hay will last only a very short time, our need continues to be great with an additional 14 horses coming in and so many people around here not having any. We do try and disperse it to the very needy.

I will work on seeing if we can get the Marquis donated or maybe a portion of it. I fear Pooh has gone to long without treatment for it to do much good but, the vet will determine that.

Pray for lots of rain so the pastures come back. I dont forsee anything getting better in rescue any other way. Hay will really be high next year I am afraid.

Thanks to all of you for making this possible.

does Marquis have an expiration date? I used to run a dog rescue program, and my vet had a soft-hearted drug supply salesman who would donate just-about-to-expire meds to our program. He obviously couldn't sell them to the vets he supplied, so if we needed something and he had it, he would hand them over to our vet at no charge for use by our program...it saved us a lot of money, especially in treating heartworm, etc. I know nothing about Marquis, but was wondering if you might be able to work a deal with your vet's drug salespeople in a similar way....

Doesn't Lori or Sunkissed Acres have a paypal account? Sometimes that is the easiest and fastest way to make a donation. I am horrible about using the mail to give money to good causes because I have to drive all the way across town to mail anything (I don't trust leaving outgoing mail in my mailbox by the road..sigh..) I pay all bills on line..so really don't use the post office for outgoing stuff much.

Allrighty, I did the Mapquest and GoogleEarth, so I know where I'm going.
It's 407 miles and Mapquest pronounces 7hr,15min drive. Alas, that's NOT the "hauling horses" time.

I've never hauled horses this far before or in this direction (Florida gal) :(

So, I need to know from anyone who has hauled from Jacksonville, FL to at least Atlanta, GA - where do you stop along the way to check on the horses?

My truck is diesel - best fuel stops along I75 north of Tifton?

Opportunities to meet some COTH folks along the way?

There are tons of fuel stops along the way. Construction sucks on I-75. Don't forget if you're traveling up to Atlanta to take the 475 bypass around Macon on I-75. Flying J, Pilot, etc. are all large truck type stops for Diesel and have plenty of room/turn around/parking to fill up as well as check on the horses. There are also plenty of Rest Areas along the way that you can stop at (pull in the tractor trailer area WAY in the back).

Cordele (Exit 101) has a Pilot gas station (if I remember correctly). Jackson/Barnesville area (Exit 201) has Flying J (easy to get in and out of) to get gas.

Checking in again. Wow what a night. 5 siezure horses were supposed to leave here this weekend, I was to be paid my 2700.00 Owners decided they didnt have to pay me a dime, too dam bad if I supplied all feed, farrier, vets, transport and hay. A screaming fest ensued with me telling them to just get themselves a lawyer, goodbye. 21.60 a day full board, including farrier, vet, etc. etc. for 5 horses and they said there was no way it would cost that a day. After agreeing the other day with Dept of Ag to pay the bill and find a place for the horses to go.

Anyhow Mocaraid, I have 110 hookup for your rig, no fear. Will be watching for the transport to take place. Fuel will be easy to get along the way. Truck stops are good for letting you water horses and whatever else is necessary. Having made the trip on more than one occassion, its an easy one, no worries.

Pooh's pedicure is done. Excellent gentleman, tried so hard to stand well for us but his right hind kept curling under  He seemed grateful for the attention. His feet are, to put it mildly, in deplorable condition. Thrush in all four, possible "pocket" abcess (or worse) in right hind, overgrown frogs - the list goes on. Amy has what she needs, so Pooh will be monitored and treated daily. He could never have made the trip on those feet - "blessed farrier" will be back if we need him.

Gus was a different story. "Blessed Farrier" and I came to the same conclusion - Gus needed a little more help than we had on hand, since Amy was at work. No point us getting hurt due to Gus's trust issues. So yesterday Gus finally got his pedicure. I wasn't there so didn't get any pictures.

We purchased the feed that Lori recommended and have enough for two weeks. I'm waiting to hear from Amy if her work schedule will allow the journey on last weekend of February. We do not have Coggins back as of this am.

I looked all over for instructions on how to post pics. Seems I must be "premium" member. Not sure what that entails but if it requires money outlay - well, maybe later after I'm over my rescue addiction. ;)

Lori, I promised you a box of stuff for the thrift shop. . . well, the box has grown to the point that I didn't know how to ship it without breaking the bank. . . so I'm going to try to get it to MoCaraid to bring up with Gus and Pooh. Along with the Dressage coat, I'm including an Aussie saddle with all the fittings, several pairs of tall boots, some breeches, and other miscellaneous stuff. . . may I request that the proceeds go to Pooh and Gus' care? It is so hard to compare Ted - at the same age, and same breed - with Pooh. All I wish for Pooh and Gus is that they can leave a comfortable life secure from starvation, hunger, pain and fear.

See what we can do when everyone does something, however small? Hoping that fernie fox's show is a huge success and just the start of her "monthly shows to benefit equine rescues" project!

I just made a round trip from Tallahassee to Cincinnati. Tifton has a good stop at exit 60. The truck stop at 61 is old - I would not stop there again.

Use the advantage of the truck fueling. No hassle to get to the pumps. Sometimes you have to wait but the 20 minute stop lets the horse legs rest a bit.

Get to the pump, go in and tell them what pump # and that it is a private vehicle, pump your fuel, move forward and then go get your receipt.

I always stop at the Love's before Atlanta so that I have a full tank in case of Atlanta problems.

Thankyou so much you guys. I look at these pics and dont see the same horror. what I see is "whew, this will be an easy fix" physically that is. These kids still have shiny coats which means they have not had there entire metabolism out of whack, you can put halters and lead ropes on them, so trust issues will dissipate. they look marvelous in comparison to what I see here regularily. I know that two years ago, they were in good shape and rideable so those horses are still under the bones and aching to come back. Medically, with EPM, that remains to be seen. I have a prop wall for horses who cant stand on three legs and a farrier who is fantastic with just such a thing. These guys will be easy to rehab.

On the other hand, I have a little 12 hh pony who can really put the boots to me hahahaahhahahaha. He is about 11 years young and never been halter broke even. Got that on, got him going nicely into a stall but he doesnt want to share it with me for even a second. He is so frightened he attacks and is quick as lightning. The poor little gaffer. I can finally get him to face me for cookies but he is like a wild animal (well he is) he grabs and runs. I am totally undecided yet as how to approach him as his meetinsgs with humans has clearly not been good, getting him started on something is important....................but what??????????????????????? Any ideas appreciated. I am not sure he is ready for the round pen yet. I really dont want to have the "come toJesus" meeting because I dont think he is ready for that. Domination over this little guy wouldnt be the answer.

We are ready for the boys, ok ok, I have to hang two gates LOL Four horses coming in today, dang, no matter how much I say no room, we make room. No worry about Pooh and Gus, they will likely be separated anyhow. Gus with the blind kids and Pooh with the TBs. We shall see when we can make a good assessment of who needs what. My vet is anxious to meet Pooh and assess his EPM and treatment.

Rain rain rain, While I want to complain about the mud, its the first I have seen in a couple of years and am happy enough to have it. That means we might get some pasture this year.

Ok, now anyone have room for 44 more horses that have been siezed LOL TRUE STORY

Lori,

Please don't separate Pooh and Gus right away. If he does EPM, the stress of the trip is
going to take a big toll and separating him from Gus is gonna make it even worse. My vet
said one of the biggest stressors for horses is settling in with a new herd.

Hello and thanks to everyone from Sunkissed. Mocoraid was a warm and wonderful person. I was in awe of anyone who could tolerate my puppy and like her the way she did. She is a very worthy of Cothdom.

Fernie Fox, thankyou thankyou thankyou. The boys will need a medical miracle. Gus has the absolute worst teeth I have ever seen. The hooks are so bad, I didnt need to open his mouth, he does it when he eats and he swishes his jaws from side to side. It must be very painful for him to eat. (But on a good note, he loves my alfalfa and says he will not eat grass hay now) His eye needs to be removed as well before it becomes cancerous. He was beaten up by a stallion just prior to coming here and has many scrapes and scratches but nothing to terribly serious. He is thin alright but not nearly as bad as I have seen. It will take vet care though for him to gain. He cant eat with those teeth inspite of his efforts. I do not think we are dealing with either WNV or EPM but rather a nuerological disorder along with a horrid, horrid case of whiteline disease. But, all in all, Pooh does deserve to be put to rights and I am sure he can be. I sincerely doubt that he will ever be rideable again, but..............he can live a good life and so deserves. He has been run through the ringer.

Then there is Gus. While I am told that Gus was born pig eyed and so is blind, this does not appear to be the case. I think that Gus does see but not in front of him for sure. He looks more like he has had some severe eye infections that were left untreated. While he was supposed to be broke and have done shows at some time, I think that is just a story that got passed along in order that Gus could be given away time and time again. He appears to be relatively unhandled but kind enough. We will not separate Gus and Pooh at this time. Gus needs to bond with another horse first so we made an ajoining paddock with the other blind kids as well as a sighted pony. I dont believe pasture is a good idea for Gus as he does panic and run into things. He is dependant upon Pooh. Until Gus and Pooh can function without each other, they will stay together as it is in there best interest. I can just as easily put weight on them in a paddock if not easier. Pooh is not ready for the herd anyhow. He needs his injuries and teeth taken care of first and some strength and weight put back.

Mocoraid deserves some big kudos here. She was very instrumental in keeping this all together inspite of the adversities she dealt with. Her trip here was long and eventful and we finally crawled into bed at 1;30 in the morning. She got to meet a lot of the kids first thing. heheheh she had to leave for home in order to make it back but I think even she might have been surprised at the amount of time it takes to tend to the entire herd here LOL

Anyhow, Pooh and Gus are here and hopefully tomorrow, we can get started on the road to recovery.

Blessings to you all for your help and fostering these two kids. They really really need the help.

War Admiral checking in w/ a brief report before falling into bed! :) I want to first apologize to MoCaraid for having to cut out "early" last night and leave this a.m. before y'all woke up. COTH lurker Riff was kind enough to offer to drive me back to the ATH to get my cart and we needed to leave early. THANKS RIFF!!! Also, I echo Lori in my thanks to Fernie Fox. Fox Rox!!

So, my impressions are based on a very quick meet-and-greet with Pooh the TB last night, very late.

Y'all, Pooh has been through the wringer, but he has GOT IT GOING ON. I was pretty worried about how he would manage such a long trip. He did just fine, thank you very much. He stepped off the trailer calmly, confidently, and without manifest physical difficulty. I was pleasantly surprised that he was able to walk at all, let alone show me that GORGEOUS, long, swinging TB stride. He was able to move in small circles without discomfort, and his nice long relaxed stride REALLY impressed me. Make of that what you will... ;)

So did his attitude. Remember, Pooh is blind in his left eye. I was the first person he met when he got off the trailer in the pitch dark. All he knew of me was a calm hand on the neck and a soft kind word in the ear. I then had to lead him across the "bridge" over a fast-moving creek to the rear barn. In the dark.

We didn't know each other from a hole in the wall, and I thought "Hmm, this could be interesting." He got to the creek, heard the water, stopped for no more than one microsecond - just long enough to check it out with his good eye - and then decided to Trust The Human and stepped quietly and calmly across.

We tried Pooh and Gus in stalls at first, with HRH Avery in the corner stall between them. Gus wasn't having any of that - he REALLY wanted his Pooh. Pooh, however, demonstrated the quiet, calm intelligence that I think is going to make him one of Sunkissed Acres' success stories. He explored his stall, introduced himself to HRH Avery next door, drank deep of his water, tested the hay to see if it was satisfactory (it was!), explored the adjacent run-in, and yet... and yet... when Gus would panic and scream for him, he would invariably come calmly but quickly back and stick his head out with an encouraging nicker. Pooh clearly is a horse with a great sense of responsibility, who knows what his job is.

For those of you who haven't figured this out yet, I'm an incurable dreamer, an incurable optimist, and a total sucker for a sob story - especially when it comes to a great-hearted TB!! :D I think Pooh could very well be one of the REALLY special ones. This guy's story isn't over yet, not by a long shot.

What I would like to do is see if we can raise the money together to throw the vet manuals at Mr. Pooh. Get him a full REAL workup and whatever he needs. I honestly think this is a horse who is worth putting some money into. OK, no: he's never going to be Idle Dice or Keen or J.J. Babu. :D But my gut instinct is that some older re-rider or some young girl who needs to move up from the ponies is going to be very grateful indeed some day that this horse survived and thrived.

The sponsorships we have now are enough (just about) to cover feed and farrier care. I'm hoping we can drag out our begging bowl one more time and ask for some money for Pooh's vet bills, and any extra-specials he may need.

He's worth it. Trust me on this. He really is. Pooh is a horse to touch the heart of anybody who ever loffed a Thoroughbred. He needs us - all of us. Let's give this good horse a helping hand.

Liz and HRH Avery (who, BTW, likes Pooh. A lot. And Pooh likes him.)

Glad to hear everyone is safe and sound and that Poof weathered the journey. IMO, Don't think it is EPM if he weathered the journey so well. Fingers crossed, anyway.

Thanks!!! That does seem to be the general consensus. His whole hind end is kind of weak/light looking, but in his present state of emaciation there is really no way to tell from just eyeballing him whether it is (a) muscle wastage, (b) starvation, (c) conformation defect or (d) some combination of any of the above. It's weak *looking* but he can definitely use it - I watched him sit down and pirouette on it during a kerfuffle with Gus over hay. He has really nice lines - the kind of TB where even though he's emaciated you can see who he is going to be. He's a VERY nice horse; I like him a lot!! He got a nice new leather halter today which is a previous SKA donation that hadn't found the right horse yet, so I halternapped it for him!

The minor bad news on the Pooh front is this: he has no lip tattoo, so we'll never be able to I.D. him. :( I always think it's so sad when TB's lose their identity! At a wild guess I'd say he has some Danzig in him but that's just a guess... Pooh definitely does NOT care to get his royal TB feet wet, so I'm thinking that rules out Eventing as a putative career. :D

I didn't really get to meet Gus much the first night, so spent some time w/ him today. First off, huge thanks to MoCaraid and Amy and whoever else helped in getting rid of all those rain rot scabs. Nice work, ladies!! AND, more good news: this boy can definitely see at least SOMETHING. We got them out to their paddock today, led them along the perimeter so he could sniff the fencing, and lo and behold he could find where it was all by himself. He found the water trough by himself, as well. Interestingly, he's been the more adventurous of the two all day long, and when I left the barn a few minutes ago he was trotting back and forth along the fence line b/c HRH Avery, Chippy, and Sunkissed Angel were all galloping along their side. Clearly he knows where the fence is. He's a sweetheart - and is actually the friendlier of the two - but as MoCaraid said, definitely has some feet-picking-up issues. We'll work on that.

And yes, they are both Dumo' Ho's!!

Drove in my gate around 9:30 Sunday night, shut down my rig, said a prayer of thanksgiving for a relatively safe journey, and fell into my husband's strong arms. I'm still recovering from "white line fever" so if my post seems disjointed please know that I'm a happy, happy camper for having the opportunity to play this small part in Gus and Pooh's journey to sanctuary.

SunkissedAcres is a firstclass operation run by committed and compassionate folks who are totally committed to the welfare of the horses. Commonsense and compassion and that level is VERY rare. Having now been there and seen firsthand the manner in which the animals are cared for, I am even more determined to support SunkissedAcres any way I can.

Reading the assessments of the horses this morning makes me weep all over again. Pooh definitely knew that he had finally arrived at a place worth of his stature, and that the humans would care for him properly. With Liz lovin' on him, he'll be holding that beautiful head upright in no time. Gus will learn that he has nothing left to fear and will soon be a "pocket pony".

They will require ongoing support to address their very expensive issues - Pooh in particular is going to need many dollars over a long period of time just to be comfortable.

OMG I cannot forget - I met HRH Avery! What a horse! What a personality! He wrapped my heart around his ears and I fell in loff!

Lori, please give those precious poochies a big hug from Auntie Mich. Specially the bouncin' cuddler

Things can change very very quickly given different situations and so has for these boys. Pooh is now top dog. Poor Pooh's teeth just make it impossible for him to eat properly. While I was hoping to get by with just one major vet bill, fact is, I will have to do it in stages.

Most people wont understand this but, Pooh's teeth will have to wait for a week or so. He is very underweight but eating well. If you change things to quickly, they will lose even more weight and he cant afford a pound. To change his mouth that drastically when he has learned to eat with his disablity, means that he will have to learn all over again. We wormed them yesterday and started on foot care. Pooh has a very bad case of whiteline disease. So bad he would rather not set down one of his back feet and it turns at a funny angle when he does. He avoids stepping on the bad side.

Gus though is in much better shape. While he is thin, is covered in rainrot, he has more weight and strength. In all likely hood, he will be adoptable as a companion horse. He has an adorable face and his eyes give him a very distinct look. He is capable of finding his way around and functioning well in a safe situation. By safe I mean, no deep creek beds or foriegn materials in which one could harm themselves. He is good about fencing, ponds etc. etc. He just needs a very loving person. He likes people muchly but needs handling. He is brave, goodlooking, kind and I believe he will be a very easy keeper. Pooh will probably need a year or so to recuperate and then see what we have.

We will keep you all posted though on there progress. I dont think it will take long at all before you see huge differences in these boys. And I for one am happy that they turned out to be the sweet and sensible guys they are.

Thanks for all your encouragement and kindness.

We got to play with the boys a little bit yesterday. Oh they are cute ya know. Very affectionate. I think WA has fallen in love with Mr. Pooh. No, I know it LOL.

No word of a lie!! I've ONLY posted 3 blogs about him today!

We're brainstorming fund-raising ideas, b/c this is one good TB I am NOT gonna give up on without a fight. Suggestions welcome!

Hey - this is MY foster brother you're talking about! I just knew it! There's something about those TBs...like I have always said, once you have a TB, you never go back. I tell my mom this all the time.

I am going to bug my mom to make cookies, the soft kind. She has to go out of town this week so maybe next week. But I told her that since I grew out of my nice Schneider's fly sheet with the belly band it should go to Pooh. Because that's what brothers do, they share.

Well, well, well...

WA is doing the happy dance.

Guess who can pick all four of his feet up and HOLD them up, in any reasonable position, without any apparent difficulty whatsoever, so long as his head is DOWN??

Mr. Pooh, that's who!!

While Lori was busy, I had "Feet Day" at the barn today and went around treating the 3 horses we've got at the moment w/ feety kindsa stuff: HRH has another tunnel abscess that blew out 2 places at once; there's a new nice horse we got in who has about the worst case of thrush I've seen in 10 years; there are a couple I'm advised are abscess prone unless feet are kept clean/dry, and last but not least there's Pooh.

I couldn't get him to pick that hind up before, but matters weren't helped by Gus buzzing around b/c he knew for a fact I had Dumors. ;) I don't really dare to separate them yet for fear of causing Gus to have a panic attack... So today I was more sensible and tossed hay for both of them first, making sure Gus knew where his was - well away from Pooh's! ;)

I treated Pooh while his head was down and he was munching, and voila - no issue whatsoever with picking either of the back feet up. So they got scraped and scrubbed and picked up and put down and picked up and squinted at and treated and he had no issue with it at all.

Yayness.

Special to Ted: We could try these guys on Peeps... I'll see if I can find any and provide a report!

Not sure if Mr. Handsome is as much of a fashion maven as HRH - I caught him trying to rub his blanket off - but if anyone wanted to buy him a halter nameplate.... ;)

Techno-challenged to say the least

I registered and did a quick profile - no problemo
But when I tried to leave a comment there popped up a box saying something along the lines of "....MIME does not support this.....
What must I do to comment? :(

Re Pooh's feet - I should have told you that, everything was such a rush I forgot! So glad to hear they are settling in well, and that Pooh has you to tend to his every need

For all interested in these two boys especially MoCaraid. The boys have gained a phenominal amount of weight. In fact, Gus doesnt need another pound. Pooh's backbone is no longer sticking out and he has MEAT on his butt. You wouldnt believe this. We dewormed them one week ago and I swear they have each put on better than a hundred pounds. Of course now, Pooh is eating about 30 lbs of hay or close to it and app 15 of that is rabbit alfalfa. His teeth are working much better now as well since he is being fed regularily and using them to grind. He is coming around really fast and showing us some TB traits, like getting all the groceries LOL.

Boys are doing wonderful and hopefully Mr. Gus will have new friends shortly as well as a new home. His own home where he wont be scared cause there wont be walls to bump into.

Thanks everyone. Cant wait to post the after pics on these two.

Hi Lori and Liz and all the kids,
Be on the lookout for a box full of 'stuff' for the shop...and a 'dribble' to help out with Pooh and Gus.

I love reading the updates!

Thank you for all that you do!
