My old girl Cha Cha lost her foal early this AM at 234 days. What a sad experience. I know many here have experience this and can relate.
Cha is still standing watch over him. :(

My friend experienced the same thing 2 weeks ago.
The mare was searcing for her foal after they removed it from her stall.
It was heart rending.
We are now waiting for the autopsy results...

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. It happened to us one year also so I guess if you breed long enough, or enough mares, you will eventually have this heart breaking experience. Hugs to you and your mare!

Am sooo sorry for your loss. You are right, breeding is not for the faint of heart, I have learned. I competed for so many years, but the breeding experience was the most emotional. Fortunately, when your foal does arrive, whenever that is, it will erase the disappointment you are enduring. Best to you and Cha Cha.

We went through this last year, and luckily the mare was able to get through her grief by being a surrogate mother to an orphaned foal.

Thanks everyone.
Cha is staying in the same area in her pasture but is OK physically. We brought her food and water over to her. She is eating and drinking, so that's good. She didn't want me to leave her.
It is sad, as so many here know and I wouldn't wish this on anyone. To see the perfect little boy......:(
I was going to retire Cha Cha after this foal; she is such a kind mare. So now
she will be the resident granny and maybe donate an embryo or two.

Jingles for Cha Cha and a big hug for you. I had a wonderful, big Thoroughbred mare foal at term, but he was dead. She was also inconsolable and he looked perfect, so who knows. Make sure she passed all the placenta and best of luck to both of you. So very sorry she lost her foal.

Jingling for you mare Cha Cha. Since my mare aborted last week at 8 months, we also treated her agressively with Gentamycin and Ampicillin and flushed her 3 times (she had placentitis before the abortion that we had been treating). But because the placenta was infected, we kept her on the antibiotics for a while afterwards and flushed her multipe times (and treated with oxytocin sequentially to help clearing).
Maybe one of these avenues may help your mare. Good luck with your vet.

Hi - thanks for the jingles. I'm just back in from checking on Cha Cha and taking her temp. Temp is down to 100.2. She is feeling better and ate her dinner. Her feet feel normal and no digital pulse.
I gave her banamine early this AM. My vet came and flushed and infused her with antibiotics.
Fingers and toes crossed Cha's temp stays down.

Still jingling for you and Cha Cha. Glad she is feeling a bit better. We have a maiden "auntie" boarder who is very maternal with our occasional foals , stands guard with the mom when they sleep, and is the perfect companion when they are weaned. She is sure they are her babies and the mom is just a nursemaid. Maybe Cha Cha will enjoy that sort of "job".
