As the question states, what is a great score for the Oldenburg Horse Breeder's Society (GOV)?

For what? Stallion, mare, foal, best braids........

Oldenburg doesn't score foals, so my questions are: mares or stallions? Individual scores or total? Inspection scores or performance tests?

Oh, sorry. Mare scores at inspections; both individual and total scores would be appreciated.

Oldenburg is usually fairly conservative in its scoring, so it is pretty rare to see scores of 8 or above for any individual trait and especially for the overall score. I think 8 is most frequently seen for the head. Premium mares must have an overall score of 7.5, so I guess that could be considered a great score, with an overall score of 8 being really exceptional.

Downyonder- question for you. I have a mare who's retired from circuit due to injury so soundness is "eh" at times. Do they take into account injury when judging? I assume yes but figured I'd ask anyway.

Yes, they do try to take age and injury into consideration, to a certain extent. They can only judge what they can see at the inspection, though. If the mare is seriously lame, she isn't going to get a great trot score, but she could still get a fairly decent overall score if her other qualities are good.

I have been attending GOV inspections for 8-10 years now. In 2007 I saw my 1st score of 7.0. Soooo, I think that anything over 6.5 is pretty impressive!

Thank you. I guess I should be very happy with my mare's score then!! :D
Recently, I've really started looking at stallion scores and many seem to get 9's and 10's. My mare didn't get anything higher than an 8, so I began to think she was "sub-par". However, the judge had glowing comments at the inspection for both mare and filly (this was almost three years ago). We received many congratulations, but I've began to question her "great score" since the numbers were lower than all the stallions. Are stallions graded differently?

Yes, stallions are scored differently - or just more harshly. A Stallion that received a 6.5 would be a gelding! LOL.
Sooo stop keeping us in suspense.......................what did your mare score??

She was given a 6.5, but I was also the handler. In hind-sight, I think she would have gotten a higher score had a pro presented her. Those extra points may have put her in the 6.7-6.8 range or even a bit higher.

You can find the policies on the website. Go to www.oldenburghorse.com and click on Inspections. Under Rules & Information, click on Mares > Breeding Approval.

For MMB, the mare needs to have an overall score of 6.0 or higher.

I believe that they have to have a 6.0 overall to make Main Mare Book and have the foals eligible for Premium awards. Thus, people who are used to hearing dressage scores for instance, can hit the panic button when they hear "overall score of 6.1" but that is a Main Mare Book score. As I said earlier, I saw my first 7.0 ever this last inspection and it was a seven point zero not a 7.5 or 7.8.
Locke Meadows, that is a wonderful score! Do you have a picture of your mare or a website?
