I've always loved this stallion:

I've tried numerous times to find some information about his sire, Winnetou, but he seemed to have vanished. He is GORGEOUS.

Yesterday I get the stallion issue of Hunter & Sport horse. I happen upon this ad at the back of the magazine:

Oklahoma State University Offers For Sale By Sealed Bid

Double gened black, perfect for siring stunning color!

Sealed bids will be opened on Friday, Feb 1 2008 at 5pm CST.
Horse is selling "as-is, where-is."

What's weird is I read a forum posting by a lady that was searching for him as he was the sire of a gelding she was in love with. She says she emailed Oklahoma State & they denied that he was part of their breeding program. He's not on their website either.

Pretty strange. Wish I had the money (and facility) for him. Wonder if there is anything wrong with him? "As-is, Where-is."???? You usually only see that type of disclaimer in used car ads...

I have a Winnetou gelding. Last time I spoke with OKU he was still there and involved in their breeding program. They were expecting his first foals there this past spring. There is also a poster on here who goes to school there.

I didn't get the latest H&SH so I was not aware of that ad. Does sound odd.

Terrie, I'd be interested in hearing more about your gelding. What's he like? Do you have any pics?

I bred a couple of mares to Winnetou when he was at Cocolalla.
Very nice foals.

I also have a Winnetou baby. I've also searched high and low for info only to come up with nothing.

It will be interesting to hear how this goes.!

Tell me about your foals/horses by him!

Got a reply back. :)

Seems he might need some care, upkeep, nothing major. Feet need a little more attention but are fine now. She suggested he get on some joint supplement, but not necessary.

Very nice and welcomed me to come out and look at him. He is currently AWS registered only.

He's a handsome boy from the pictures I've found of him!!!

I saw him when he was still in Carmel Valley. There is something wrong with his hind end. If I had to make an educated guess, I would say it was something up higher than his hocks. He was stuck at 2nd, because he couldn't get his changes. A very honest, sweet, easy stallion.........but if you are looking for a horse to ride, I would look very carefully before committing.

I have seen several of his babies. While they all had very sweet temperments, they never impressed me. Rather coarse, in my opinion. Of course, every baby has a mother.

He was always only AWS APPROVED. The OK ad mentions him as a Hanoverian, but he is only REGISTERED Hann. He was never approved Hann....might have been RPSI at one point.

Winnetou was a very sweet boy, but I don't think he had an enormous amount of athletic ability and I know he had feet problems before.

Currently there are quite afew homozygous black WB stallions out there who are approved by major registries, not just AWS, so the market for a stallion like Winnetou might have lessened.

I sure hope he finds a place to call home, but I think there are better breeding stallions out there now. Sweet guy, though.

That's too bad about the poor hooves. I had a stallion that suffered from brittle hooves and it was a NIGHTMARE. No hoof, no horse.

It's also scary to think that Winnetou is already having soundness issues. He really isn't very old! I have heard from quite a few people that own one (or more) of his foals and no soundness issues have been mentioned thus far. Perhaps he suffered an injury or two at one point in time?

He was approved for breeding with RPSI several years ago when Marion had him but he needed to fulfill is performance requirements to remain on the roster.
I had also heard from the woman who purchased Winnetou from Marion that he was injured while in the Carmel area.
It is a shame about his feet. I hope he finds a great home.

Wow what an interesting thread!
I have a Wolkenzauber foal (Wolkenzauber was by Winnetou). I too have looked for info on Winnetou on-line and not found anything. At one point, I learned that he had done some hunters and that was going well - at that time anyway.

Whats the story with his feet?

My young guy is 4 now and 17 hands. He is very well put together and has an enormous stride. I'm just starting him under saddle because we had some soundness issues. He had laminitis about 10 months ago. He's 100% fine now and the vet and shoer are totally convinced that his laminitis will not and did not cause lasting damage. He has an insulin problem so we are managing his diet such that it's sugar free. He is in great shape and a lot of fun.

The one thing I can say about Wolkenzauber is that he has a wonderful temperment. We went to see him before buying the young horse several yeasr ago and was amazed at how laid back he was. My guy inherited that from his Dad - and maybe Winnetou too.

So given our single episode of laminitis, I'm curious about the feet issues being mentioned with Winnetou. Any more info?

I also had two Wolkenzaubers. Both huge. My FRM Suerte used to be owned by Marion at Cocolalla and she had several Wolkenzaubers.

Winnetou did have a very sweet disposition and many of his foals were mellow as well. And Wolkenzauber, being half Paint, turned out to be a pretty mellow guy as well.

Also, I've sent you a PM.

Genevieveg17 --

How is Suerte doing these days? I always LOVED that mare and thought she threw some of the best babies Marion ever produced -- at least, until she started importing top mares from Germany. But among the domestic mares, Suerte was my favorite.

How old is she these days?

She's a grand old mare.

Suerte is wonderful! She is getting old but don't tell her that. She still bucks and plays with gusto. She has been a fabulous producer. I also bought Leagro from Marion. She has had two wonderful foals for me and is back in foal to Radikal.

Here is a photo of Suerte in all of her pregnant glory about two weeks before she finally foaled last year.
She will be 22 this year and has been retired.

Winnetou is back at Cocolalla Creek with Marion.
He will be available for breeding in 2008. I am so happy he found a great home!
