I received a phone call yesterday from a fellow with the "Plaid Pony" has anyone used of , read , or heard of this online group (or magazine)?? What are your thoughts. . is it for Breeders or Enthusiasts or. . .sold at Shows?? I couldn't quite get the gist. . . would you recommend or not?

Do you mean the Paisley Pony? It is published by the folks at Plaid Horse. If so, the Paisley Pony is great! They have been a wonderful avenue of advertising with results. They cover ALL breeds and disciplines of ponies and have great articles to please all. They are not sold as shows--they are free. They are sent to show avenues as well as local tack rooms. I believe individulas can buy a yearly subscription. The people on staff are very nice and super great to work with. And best of all --they are affordable! It won't cost you 5 stud fees to place an ad!!!! Highly recommend! They give little perks and warm fuzzies like the birth announcement section --where we can spotlight our new little bundles of pony! (free service) Also a wonderful "who is winning what" section--if your pony is winning big-- again--a FREE service! I can not say enough good things. The pony stallion issue is soon to go to press. Get your spot now!

Windswept,
OMG! Yes, PAISLEY pony not Plaid POny, ahahah!!! my track record with names is nill. . . .I've ceased even trying to get the kids names correct. . . the all encompassing "you" seems to work!!
Yes, the fellow was very nice on the phone and the rates he quoted seemed very reasonable. I just wasn't sure about circulation and where these ads would be. . . if it is a free mag passed around at Shows then that IS a great way to get our ponies "out there". . thanks for the input.

Just to add - they're available free at all the tack stores I've been to in the Philadelphia area. Pretty, thick booklet of newspaper stock (ie, not glossy), seems to have a slightly Northeast/New England emphasis (that's just my impression from glancing through it). As I remember, ads are pretty much spread throughout. It's a bit like an extended classifieds, with articles and ads interspersed. Ask the salesman to send you a copy, so you can see the setup.

Riverbell---there are glossy ads too! And lots of articles--more reading than I can do in one sitting. It's nice. I really think they encompass the entire US... perhaps there is more particpation from the north east--but I have never felt like it was just a north east publication.

I've gotten a copy at Devon, but I haven't seen it in tack shops around here.... doesn't mean they aren't I just haven't seen it... neat publication!

To get a feel for it you can download their issues online: http://theplaidhorse.com/ponyissues.html
My trainer has talked with them before & has told me what a nice group of people they are!
Hmmm.... advertising rates decent... hmmm.... might be a good place to advertise a certain filly.... can anybody comment on success they've had buying/selling/booking stud fees?

Picked up a couple of copies at EA.
They aren't chock full of useful articles, but some nice nostalgia, and definitely good 'who's doing what' now. Free little brags, which is nice.
I would DEFINITELY seek one out if I were looking to buy or breed a pony.
The gentleman also said he would look into getting them into local tack stores since they are not up here at all.
I do think they are more mid-Atlantic, no? (I'm thinking VA/MD etc.?)
I am thinking of using a print ad with them, since the Journal go me not one inquiry last time.

They had copies out at the USEF Annual Meeting. It looked like a very nice publication.

A big thumbs up for the Paisley Pony from here!
Really wonderful people to work with, and as Windswept mentioned, the "freebies" that they offer are wonderful as well. I eagerly await every copy. I've had good results advertising there, as well.

I advertised my boy in it last year and again this year! They sent me a copy of the issue last year and I really liked it, plus their rates are very reasonable.

I am well aware that there are a number of fine horse publications out there. I am a past president of American Horse Publications (which The Chronicle of the Horse helped to found) representing more than 250 publications and web sites, coast-to-coast. But as the publisher of The Chronicle and signing the check for the bandwidth bringing you this BB for free, I find this forum a curious place to promote subscriptions, advertising, and collecting editorial content for other publications.
I recommend that anyone interested in promoting publications here (starting with The Plaid Pony) contact me directly regarding any cross-promotional opportunities. My phone number is (540) 687-6341. The banner ads at the right are an excellent value at $180 a week. Were you aware that independent tracking sites report the COTH boards attract an average of 60K-70K unique visitors monthly?
Otherwise, I think erinwillow has several good answers to the question. Thank you for your support in helping me to keep these boards free.

If you are looking for a photo of Rotherwood Crown Prince I would suggest looking at the Beaverwoods Farm website where he stands for owner Kirsten Brunner.

I just love The Plaid Horse/Paisley Pony! It's free in the tack and feed stores around us and we always pick up a copy. Their prices seems reasonable to me, and we enjoy perusing the ads quite a lot.

Thank you for the suggestion - I already have a most beautiful story and photographs of Prince from Kirsten. And the response regarding others has been excellent. One amazing part of assembling information is meeting others who share a common passion and love for good ponies!
I will now be quiet as I should not be gathering information through this site. I have long been a Chronicle subscriber, rely on their special issues from 1955 on (the Pony Issues, etc) for pertinent information in my writings, love the editorials, show coverage, pony ads, and columnists, and for at least 5 years was the coodinator of the Welsh cooperative advertising that I recall came to $8800+ for the magazine in one of the issues :) Belinda Hyde and the lovely graphics lady could not have been better to work with.
It certainly is not my intention to go against against the publication in any way - 'nuf said.
I prefer to be a lover not a fighter, unless of course it is for a particular cause.
Best to all,
Thalia
