I have a coming two year (2/19/06) swedish warmblood cross gelding by my late stallion Ricky Martin.....he was born with cataracts and could have a perfectly normal chance of eye sight if he had the new surgery....which is very expensive. Any way to make a long story short....I have to find another home for him. He has been labled as "non-working" by my board members and they have ruled that he must go. He has a somewhat normal life....goes outside daily, with other horses.....he sees the fencing, he runs and plays like a normal guy....you would never know he can't really see until you look at his eyes super close. If any one out there could open their home to him I would be forever in your debt. He is free...obviously....but I know this is the "give-a-way" thread and I wanted to make that clear.
PS This guy is beautiful. Bright chesnut with lots of white. Perfect mover, athletic and a super personality. He would make a super dressage or hunter if he had the surgery....
Thanks

If you don't mind sharing what his specific condition is, and what you have found out about treatment so far (and the costs), that might help potential adopters.

He was born with cataracts....has had a full exam done at UGA and was deemed a canadate for the new surgery where they disolve the cataract and draw it out....the outlook was amazing...but the cost of the surgery was between $6000 and $10,000 and they can only do one eye at a time so he would have to return for additional surgery. They said with the surgery he could have a completly normal life including riding....jumping...whatever....All his records will be made available.

I'm not in a position to take on another horse, but if I were I would snap this guy up. Blind does not mean a horse cannot have a wonderful, useful life. Anyone hear of Valiant, the event prospect who went blind and was trained in dressage after he went blind? Blind horses can do anything sighted horses can do, except jump. This boy's potential is not nearly as limited as many think.

Just wanted to wish you as much luck as possible in finding a home for this baby. I cannot afford a horse let alone one that requires surgery. I also wanted to inquire if Ricky Martin was ever on tv?? If he was the horse I saw a few years ago, I wanted to let everyone know he is an amazing looking animal, and this horse should have great potential.

I keep seeing this adding and wishing there was someway I could take this boy. He sounds lovely but I just don't have the money to keep 2 right now and pay for college. But I did want to add that one of my good friends has a nearly 2 yo filly with the same condition and she is doing quite well without the surgery. As she is getting older her eyesight is getting a little better and even with the cararacts. So if someone is thinking of geting this horse, they can live and even thrive with the cataracts. You don't know how much I wish I had the money right now to bring this boy home with me but good luck finding him a great home;)

Hi everyone!! I just wanted to let you know that James arrived safe and sound in Versailles KY yesterday. He is very nice youngster in person. His pics don't do him justice. He has such a kind expression. He is very trusting towards people. He has big expressive eyes and when his surgery is completed he should (hopefully) be able to see well again. He has a huge extension in his gaits. He is a truly beautiful mover and has nice conformation. He is very babish looking still and I know Swedish warmbloods tend to mature later than most. He settled in well like he has lived with me forever. I put him in the front paddock with my 30 inch mini "Freddie" who immediately took care of him and stays with him.
I will hopefully have pics of him this weekend for you all to see. :)
I will be speaking with the Optamalogist from R & R this week about him. I will keep you posted!!

James Dean is doing well!! He has adjusted to life here in KY and has a new buddy, Freddie the mini. I will get some pics and post in my webshots tonight. I will send another update!
I have been working with the Optomologist, Dr. Latimer who works with Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. We are trying somethings first before going for the surgery. The cataract surgery is new and there are some positives and minuese with the surgery. Right now he is on Atropine ointment and antibotic which is administered to his eyes everyday. I keep a journal on what he does and how he reacts. We have found out yesterday for his checkup that he can see out of his right eye (clearly and correctly) about 1/2 moon size of his eye. He can see in front and side and back out of that eye. He will tilt his head to see more sometimes. You can take a pen light and see a greenish tint which is light reflecting off the lense. This is a really good sign. This is the same with the left eye but we are working on getting his pupil more dialated so he can see. There is so much I am learning for the Dr. about the equine eyes and James might improve enough to where he may not need the surgery to be a performance horse. She is finding out the costs of the surgery if in a few months we decide to do it. Right now he is showing some positive results with his limited vision.
Thanks everyone for caring. He is truly a special horse and I feel blessed that Nicole let him come home with me and my horses. When I see him he makes me smile. He has that ora about him. Just a happy horse.

Hi Everybody!! James is doing well!! We are trying some other therapies before going for surgery. Cataract Surgery is still new and no one knows what happens to these horses after 2 years. I want James to have limited sight than no sight at all. His eyes are actually pushing on the cataracts and they started to leak which is a good thing. But he is getting his eye meds and stands perfectly still. He is turned out with a weanling, a mini and my mother in laws retired 17.3 dutch gelding and he acts like a normal horse. He will be getting a check up at the end of the month. He has to get gelded too!
But he is such a good boy that he just makes you feel so good when you see him.
I promise to take pics of him in his new blanket. The weather has not exactly been cooperating!!!

Approx. how expensive is the surgery for luck duck?
futurewin
Mar. 9, 2008, 06:23 PM
I own the horse. The surgery about $3500.00 to $4000.00 but there are not long term results with horses that had the surgery so we are just kind of hanging in there.

I wanted to update everyone that James is doing great. However he is not a gelding as he had a late surprise drop. He is exceptionally sweet. Due to no fault of his own, I must find James a new home. This has to be an excellent home who will take care of him and give him his eye medication. I have put a lot of time and effort working with an eye specialist at Rood & Riddle. I have all his vet records. I have the medication which is a small amount of diclofanac in each eye every other day. His eyes are doing well, no tearing and he gets a long fantastic with others. He does best in turnout as much as possible and not in a stall for long periods of time. He will get really anxious and walk in circles continously.
He can be a great dressage prospect. He will have to be gelded. Please pm for more information on him or email me at futurewinenterprises@hotmail.com
This truly breaks my heart but I have to have the best for him.

I posted this over on e-warmbloods, too, but you are going to have an easier time placing this guy if you have him gelded first. It looks like you've known since at least February that he needed to be gelded? Anyway, it is a lot to ask of someone to take a horse that needs daily eye care who is also still intact; I'm guessing that many people who would be willing to deal with the eyes aren't set up to care for a stallion.

I am shocked about him not being gelded....I still have the paperwork from his "bill"...I watched the vet geld him...I watched two testicles be "snipped"......I remember the vet was worried he would wake up bad from the meds because of his sight inpairment....he woke up beautifully and waited like a pro for the meds to get out of his system.....
Anyway...I didn't know you needed a home for him...he can just come back to my farm to live....call me or e-mail me.
