I think I have a problem :D I love buying winter blankets and sheets and quarter sheets in every size and every make and color! I went to get a few sheets out the other day for my horses and I have 5 and a 1/2 trucks full of blankets and sheet. You would think this is not such a bad thing ....... but I have only 2 horses.

So, what do you have way to much of but you cannot seem to not pick up one more of on your tack shop, ebay or catelog escapades?

And, is there any cure?

I also seem to have a lot of halters...for the ONE horse I have....let's see...the old one...another old one...a red one...a leather one.... the mint green one....

Lead lines, saddle pads and polos. Leasing a new horse of a different color and gender was a great excuse to get new ones. Pink looks so dashing on a dark bay mare!!! Not so good on a flea bitten greay gelding.

Saddle pads, on the HR side. Also, scissors. I have this idea that I won't be able to find a set of scissors around the barn when I need, so I have scissors all over the place.

And although not for the horses, I really need to join Catnip Mouse Buyers Anonymous. I can't even count the number of catnip mice around, yet I always buy more. Was just checking out a halter the other day I won on Ebay (okay, sort of HR), and they offered to add a catnip mouse very cheaply. Sure, I said, add a mouse. Only after I clicked okay did I think, "We don't NEED anymore mice."

I don't so much as buy it all as it usually comes with the horses originally. A new horse will usually end up getting a "new" halter and matching lead.

I have so many accumulated halters it's ridiculous. How's 13 saddles for 3 horses? I only bought 4 of them. Brushes, brushes and more brushes. I do like to have a separate set of brushes for each horse so they add up, but then there are the times when I run across brushes that just FEEL good and I HAVE to buy it.

On the other hand, I have a drastic shortage of english saddle pads! I only have 2 and one of those is kinda worn out. Oh if I weren't posting under my alter, I could pass that idea on to my SS!

Saddle pads. Hubby, H/J trainer, and best friend who is a trainer have threatened to do an intervention. I haven't bought a saddle pad in at least 6 months! (Of course I'm not really riding right now with new job and being pregnant.)

The other thing I seem to have a lot of is bits. Though they all serve a purpose, or did at one point anyway. I also have to stay away from clearance racks. I have issues with those orange clearance stickers. :)

(Non HR... I've also been banned from buying dog toys. :( I don't feel too bad now though because the corgis destroy anything cute. Makes it easier to just buy rawhides now.)

Went through a phase, years ago, of collecting standing bandages and leg wraps - although not intentionally! I'd get to the barn, discover horsie with an owie, discover bandages were still at home in the laundry pile, tack shop 1 hour closer anyway, drive to tack shop, buy more.

I now have one entire TACK TRUNK full of leg wraps.

Even sadder is the fact that yes, I actually do get through the entire trunkful on occasion!

Me too! I was unpacking all my sheets and blankets today and realized everyone has at least 2 sheets, lightweight blankets and heavy blankets, plus coolers, sweat sheets, etc. I think it is because I love to wear coats and sweaters myself! SADDLE PADS! I have more color combinations than the local tack store  I have no less than 25-30 and only 2 horses that I ride.

Bridles are a close second. Even my retired broodmare has one still. I have 8 bridles for the 3 horses.

Saddles, saddlepads, and grooming brushes.

In my defense on the saddle thing, I had a number of horses--in a remarkable variety of types--on loan over a fairly short period of time. Kind of a similar thing with the pads, too.

The bummer about the pads is that most are used just enough that they wouldn't really be worth selling on eBay, so I figure I'll hang onto them.

The saddles I really need to do something about.

I just love colored half chaps. I have a pair in red, pink,l ight blue, neon yellow, purple, hunter orange..... well you get the idea. I'm constantly shoping ebay, catalogs etc, for a new and exciting color to wear. There is a pair of navy blue on ebay just calling my name:yes: but I'm being a good girl and I havn't bought them yet.

I also have a thing for lead ropes. When ever I'm at a used tack sale I cant help my self when I see a lead rope for $1 or $2 dollars. Especialy if it's in a pretty color. I only have one horse and about 10 lead ropes ( and about 6 halters to go with the 10 lead ropes )

Am I the first one to say bridles? I have 2 geldings, ride mainly western (but sometimes English), so I have 2 silver show bridles, a Billy Cook training bridle, a double bridle, NICE padded English bridle in Havana, my hacking bridle, plus a bunch of others. I like to put different bits on different bridles so I'm not playing the bit change game...I just grab the bridle with the bit I want and go.
Silly, eh?

I thought I was the only one with an addiction to Cat Mice!!! With 3 kittens in my house under the age of 1 year you can never have too many..............I went to the feed store the other day and the girl behind the counter asked me how many cats I have because I always buy tons of mice!!! It is pretty bad when people are starting to notice my obsession!!

I am addicted to brushes and grooming products!! My horses have so much goop in their manes and tails from all the product I put in them................

Leather products! I have some bizarre compulsion to buy leather products.
Probably because I border on anal retentive about keeping my tack clean.
The Hubby likes to mess with me and hang up bridles wrong, knowing I
-cannot stop myself- from going and taking it down and hanging it properly.
I have a problem, I know. I once screamed in outrage when he opened a bag
of chips from the bottom (but it was years ago and I'm somewhat better now that I have kids). DH finds this hilarious. . . until I rumple his sheets. He cannot sleep if the bedspread and sheet are not neatly folded down and kept that way but that's the end of his neatness fetish.

Halters keep multiplying . . .I still have all the ones from my mini even. And I
covet MORE halters (Quillin's).

Buckets

Grooming brushes/products. I just love grooming time, and I'm working on having a full tote grooming kit for -each horse-. :sigh:

Tack. I have tack I've never put on a horse. I have breastplates, martingales, bridles, bits I've never used, bell boots, etc. I now have FOUR western saddles and I want a CC one and a dressage one. I can't quit!

Saddle Pads... Polos (to match)... Quarter Sheets (to match)... Winter blankets!!!

I have atleast 30 saddle pads per horse, 6 sets of polos per horse (even if they are the same color each horse gets there own set), 4 quarter sheets per horse (same as polos)... And each horse has 3 turnout sheets, 3 cotton sheets, 2-3 medium turnout blankets and 2 heavy blankets... Obsessive? ME?! Who could have guessed?

Showjumper28
Nov. 5, 2007, 06:45 PM
BTW - I want to join the Saddle Pads Hourders Anonymous!

I also have a cooler problem, but I justify this by having 3 horses of very different sizes and having to layer coolers in the winter after hard work outs. Each horse has 2 wool, 1 terri cloth (these are my favorite since they work the best) 1 anti-sweat and 2-3 fleece, and this is per horse!!!! This could be why I am able to fill an entire tack room of my own.

One more member for the saddle pad hoarders clique. Because they are not very expensive, and are pretty, and they might wear out, eventually. I have about six in regular rotation for two horses, but then there are all of the pretty ones that are put away for shows, and you never know when you will need a brand new sparkly white dressage square, so there are two of them in the tack box, plus one for jumpers, and a fitted one for hunters. Erg. and I can't seem to stop myself from wanting MORE... like all the pretty soft new colors with lovely scrolly quilting instead of boring square quilting. And puffy ones. And embroidered ones. Ohhhh.... how I want them...

Vetrap (in all the purdy colors!*)
Utility knives**

And this isn't an ongoing thing but: when our local State-Line-Tack-in-PetsMart was closing down, and every week the discount got deeper, I ended up with more girths than... BRAINS! At the very VERY end, $50-$80 girths were going for $3-5!!!

*Vetrap is my duct tape... I use it for everything. Might I recommend wrapping your wheelbarrow handles with it? It is very comfy and gives a nice grip!

**And there STILL is never a knife around to open a hay bale. About two years ago I bought a wholesale lot of 72 (!!!!!) of them on eBay and now? Now? No small utility knives to be found. I think the mice take them for fencing lessons or something.

I use half a pair old scissors with about three feet of baling twine tied to the handle (for visibility and hanging it up). Works well enough and yet so useless for anything else it doesn't go wandering.

Hunt coats/show shirts/boot socks/belts/saddle pads/blankets/spurs. I was proud of myself when I sold about 15 saddle pads on ebay last winter!!! I have converted to baby pads mostly now so I can have a lot of those because they take up less room in the tack trunk. But by far I am the hunt coat queen. I can't prevent myself from buying them. Sadly I may only wear the same coat twice in one show season unless it is one of my favorites! :o

Hoof picks - I am a pro at misplacing them (or leaving them out for others to misplace for me) so anytime I'm at the tack store I buy a hoof pick. I'll be missing ALL of them for a week, and then one day come across like six of them.

Baby pads - I hate HATE doing laundry, so I just have a bazillion baby pads. Of course this presents a problem when they're all dirty.

Halters - Let's see, my ONE horse has his icky green one, his VERY nice (and way too expensive for a damn halter, but I bought it anyway) leather one, his crappy leather one that used to be nice, a burgundy one, a navy one, a black one, a leather grooming halter I never use (I won it at a show), etc...

Jeans - Although this is only slightly HR since I don't ALWAYS buy them to ride in. I am a jeans whore. I have like 40 pairs. It's completely ridiculous.

I have one horse and:
5 saddles (2 close contact, 1 all purpose, 1 dressage, 1 western trail)
9 saddle pads
5 halters, another one soon, probably (I have held off for a few months...)
9 leads
8 sets of polos
4 bridles
3 coolers, with a quarter sheet and irish knit coming soon
3 martingales (which I have not used at all in over 2 years)
4 bits, 2 hackamores, bitless bridle (the bits haven't been used in 2+ years, hackamores in a couple months)
and more little things that I can't think off at the moment...

Nov. 5, 2007, 08:18 PM
Well I have an excuse in some ways...I used to ride up to 5 horses/day and each horse needed a clean pad, and I only do laundry like 1x a week, plus each horse needed a different girth, set of boots, and I don't like to switch bits, so there are a fair amount of bridles.

But my big ones, now that I am down to 1 horse are:
-Open front boots (preferably leather ones, which get pricey quick!) Pica also seems to have an every increasing amount of Eskadrons
-Bridles (I have a "back up show bridle", show bridle for the hunters and I want a Vespucci for the eq. plus all the schooling bridles)
-Saddle pads
-Bits, I like to have a variety depending on the horse and rider so I always buy bits that I *may* need. :p
-Correction pads, I should sell some of them, I have so many and between Pica and Soldier I only use 3 of them!
-Show sheets/scrims

Trust me, my mom hates my large collection of things, she went on a tack room cleaning rampage and announced to me that she was throwing things away, and that I couldn't have 3 tack trunks in the aisle plus 2 others, and all the junk I keep in the tack room and trailer. At one point she said "where the hell did all these bits come from? Soldier would flip over if you used this on him" my response "but someday mom maybe I will have a horse who likes that bit"

Oh, that's a cool thread, makes me feel less bad for just having ordered the thinline pads , thanks COTH, some thread on the dressage forum got me going on it.

So, WAY too many saddlepads, and of course most of them being the really expensive so-called orthopedic pads. ;)

And count me in on the gazillion and one turnout blankets : lightweight with neck & without neck, mediumweight with neck & without neck, same for heavy weights oh & now I found out about the Weatherbeeta turnouts with bellyband, so now we need lightweight with bellyband without neck and lightweight with bellyband with neck, etc etc etc..... :D
Oups & then they get so wet & dirty & didn't dry over night, so need to have spares for after wet nights............ So embarrassing when DH has an actual look at the stacks I keep in the basement..........

Ok.. my name is Windswept and I have an addiction. Pony turnout blankets and sheets. Just can't help myself. I have so many blankets that I "forget" about them and buy more! It's always fun to discover them at an unexpecting time!
Oh but this is so exciting.. I have a pony foal this year--that needs a size that I don't have--- a 46"... (he's a small pony foal--just 3 mos now)... Oh.. and its tough - I cant really find many size 46 blankets to pick from.
I just won 3 new blankets on ebay last week--- can't wait for them to get here!! yeah to Equiteric! I try to get blankets in every size--so as the pony foals grow--the next size is here waiting!!!

I guess you could say I collect ponies too-- have 15 of those!
All the better--- 15 ponies need a LOT of blankets & sheets!

Ditto. Saddle pads and spur straps. Love bits. Must have all kinds of girths to fit every horse or pony I ride. I cannot stand to not have the right equipment for the job/horse. So, riding different horses is a bad thing for me.

I'm also addicted to riding wear. Not show clothes -- just stuff to school in. Can't have enough polos for summer or turtle necks or cool vests or jackets for this time of year.

Worse -- I buy them all in the same color (white -- I'm so boring) so it isn't even like I'm doing it for the variety. But you can't have too many. I have a 'use it twice then wash it' policy so more is better.

Was just checking out a halter the other day I won on Ebay (okay, sort of HR), and they offered to add a catnip mouse very cheaply. Sure, I said, add a mouse. Only after I clicked okay did I think, "We don't NEED anymore mice."

Okay, first of all your barn sounds like a good setting for a Stephen King book. Perhaps you should start writing a horror book/movie...

Second, I too have a problem with cat nip mice. Except we NEED the mice. Where do they go? We moved into this apartment (in a late 1700's cape so lots of nooks and cranies) a year ago and not even kidding we have bought between 40-50 mice. We have about 6 right now, and I have to keep going on mousey rescue missions to get them from under various furniture. But what happened to the other 34-44? I've looked in all the nooks and cranies, and the only thing I can imagine is that there is a hole in the carpeting in the stairs, and that the kitties have been stuffing the area under the stairs with mice. Or maybe the real mice have been running off with them...

Borrowing Defying Logic's list (what an appropriate screen name for this thread ):

have one horse and:

5 saddles (2 all purpose, 1 dressage, 1 close contact, 1 western trail)
3 saddle pads (but I have others somewhere)
5 halters
7 bridles
3 coolers
5 turnouts
6 stable blankets
5 stable sheets
1 fly sheet (how did that happen)
10 bits (mostly versions of the snaffle)
7 girths

I really need some more saddle pads and fly sheets :D And girth covers, I only have a couple of those.....

Horse books.

I've 3 personal horses, 7 horses in total, and my husband often tells me my three have more "stuff" then his racing string had at it's largest (17 horses), but really, that's kind of exagerating (I hope!) as he had 3 tack rooms full at the track alone.

But the books are probably my biggest guilty pleasure. I have everything from medical dictionaries to donkey driving, and pick up the kiddy horse story books to pass on to my niece. As for non-tack and non-horse use items, well, we won't get into my figurine collection, m'kay?

Electrical tape (its a standing joke with my dad...he bought me 1 doz rolls and but I can't seem to help throwing another roll into the cart at Wally-World); sanding sponges; and vetwrap (I can never remember if we used it all or not...usually the answer is NOT)

Saddles. I probably have 7 or 8. Almost all off e-bay --I just can't resist a bargain. But I'm going to be selling some of them soon. Yeah. Real soon.;)

I am a saddle pad and horse blanket whore. I'd buy every type of blanket I could, if I could afford it.

As far as saddle pads...I buy a lot of them, but end up liking few. So I end up with a ton of pads but only a couple I can actually ride in, thus prompting me to always buy more!

1) Saddle Pads ~ I think I have like 12 or more for schooling and 3 for showing
2) Grooming Products (brushes, etc) ~ And I don't use 1/2 of them
3) Show Shirts ~ I have like 10 or so and haven't shown in over a year
4) Leadropes ~ I think I have 4 or 5 of these
5) Horse Clothing ~ Coolers: 1 wool, 1 chill chaser fitted, 2 irish knit, 1 fleece. Blankets: 2 sheets, 2 mediums, 1 heavy. 1 Quarter sheet. 1 shoulder cover. 2 show sheets.

And yes, I have only 1 horse.

I also have things I've never used (splint boots, polo wraps, etc). I did have 6 bits. I am selling 2 on e-bay. I had duplicates. Don't ask. Keeping one of each so will be down to 4. I also have the hind splint boots on e-bay too. Never opened the package.

I guess the other stuff I figure I will need or use at some point.

It's a sickness.

I haven't really had time to develop my obsession (unless forums count?) since I've had my horse only 2 1/2 months, but I'm on my 3rd bridle, 3rd saddle, about 6th saddle pad, 4th bit... I am using the fact that he's finicky and hard to fit as an excuse!

When there was a sale on nice dressage pads for $9.99 I bought 3 and thought I should have gotten more...my mother and husband thought that was too many.

I'd like to have extras of most everything. I bought an extra set of stirrup leathers just in case. My girth got locked in my trainer's tack room so now I am wishing I had an extra one of those :(

I'm already unloading stuff on e-bay. I am sick. SICK I TELL YOU!

DUCT TAPE!

I can never seem to find my roll of it, so I go out and buy another. Then when I finally clean out my trunk, I find about 20 almost-full rolls in the bottom.

My tack trunk is a black hole, I swear.

I use half a pair old scissors with about three feet of baling twine tied to the handle (for visibility and hanging it up). Works well enough and yet so useless for anything else it doesn't go wandering.

Me too!

I have a saddle pad addiction also. I go shopping and see one that I like. SO I buy it. I have at least 10 for ONE horse. I just got one that is corderoy. My horse also has a few blankets. 1 heavy weight turnout, 1 medium weight turn-out, 1 show sheet, 1 chill chase, 1 polar fleece cooler, 1 stable sheet, and a stable blanket. He also has a shoulder gaurd and neck sleazy.

I LOVE saddle pads. I use one to whatever my mood is for the day.

OH my other addiction that is horse related is show shirts. I have 10 show shirts. I do have to admit that I am going through the shirts from last year, and will be selling them at the tack sale

Non horse related. Dog toys. My dog has a toy basket that is full. He has every kind of toy you can imagine. (The dog & horse are my kids)

Hunt coats. I just counted; I have eight now.:lol: However, I bought most of them on sale (one I got for $80 new... was $400!), and right now only four of them fit. Three are sitting, waiting to be sold, and the fourth extra I'm saving in case one of my friends decides to take up showing.

Bellboots... hands down! I never walk out of a tack shop without a pair because I know Bellboot-demolishing-Blitz will eventually need them (he needed a new pair today and luckily I had about 5 pairs in my truck to choose from :D )

I also have at least a years worth of liniment and vetrap stocked up since I found an amazing sale not too long ago

i only have 2 saddle pads, though! 3 if you count the half pad. okay.. 4 for the other half pad... and then there's the trunk in the loft...

ah, crap.

I go through phases where I keep buying stuff, but sometimes it's not intentional. Like, I bought three of those 12-packs of little round yellow tack sponges at various times, not remembering I already had unopened packages of them. Oh, well, at least they're cheap.

I have accumulated a lot of crap over the years, but nothing all that unusual. I've owned five different horses over 22 years, of whom I still own three (one died recently, and another was sold to a friend but may come back to live with me at some point), so I have probably half a dozen bridles and saddles, various pairs of horse boots and wraps, at least 8 bits, shipping boots, head bumpers, haynets, blankets and sheets...you name it, I've probably got at least one, but not because I can't resist, more just because over time I've bought things each horse needed. Sure, I could have gotten by without some of the things I have, but you know, gotta spoil the ponies. :)

And I actually just had to force myself to go out and buy some saddle pads because I was down to only two, one of which wasn't really big enough, so I was always worried that the seam was digging into their backs under the cantle. I can't say I'm as happy with the new ones I got as I was with the ones that have worn out over the years--I got some of those Roma ones with the wicking lining, and they are the very devil to get clean! Dirt just gets sucked through that fabric into the padding and it takes several washings to get out, even if the surface of the pad looked practicaly clean when it went in. So, I might need to joing the saddle-pad addict club sometime...

I will say, I am sucked in by things on sale. Not any particular things--I won't, say, buy any halter I see on sale, and in fact I have one halter per boy, plus a couple of breakaway ones as spares--but I can never go to Smartpak without hitting the clearance room upstairs...

SO many bits. I don't even know.
5 Bridles
And of course, far more brushes than I ever use. Because you know, there's the summer set for the short coat, and you have to get the whole entire variety. Then the winter set for the thick, heavy coat, plus extra brushes for when he's so caked with mud you need to have one laying around (am I right?)...

Only 1 ridable horse. Hopefully the 4 year old will slowly be worked into the mix. He just needs to gain some more pounds first!

And bridles. I have one horse, 7 bridles. It's unhealthy.

Reins.......I have a thing for rubber reins. Back in the day I had those awesome rainbow colored rubber ones until they starting melting(?) and since they have sentimental value attached they are now hanging off my bed, 'course then I moved onto the skinny rubber ones, then the thick ones without the leather intervals-like one continuous rubber piece; love them all and always go back to the rein section to check out new versions.... And then theres western reins which get loaned out to friends and forgotten I've loaned and just buy more;)

Also hoses for the barn-already gone through two in....5 months? I am convinced I'll find one that doesn't kink and rolls itself up perfectly on the holder.

There's a fine line between being well supplied and having too much. I like to think of myself in the former category. However, I do have to sign up for SPHA meetings. I just bought two more at the EA, and I don't even have the excuse they were inexpensive, they're just beautiful. My horse even rolled his eyes when I checked out the fit, "More saddlepads??"

Ok.. my name is Windswept and I have an addiction. Pony turnout blankets and sheets. Just can't help myself. I have so many blankets that I "forget" about them and buy more! It's always fun to discover them at an unexpecting time!

I guess you could say I collect ponies too-- have 15 of those!
All the better--- 15 ponies need a LOT of blankets & sheets!

This is my problem! I looked at my pony this morning and thought ... you need another sheet - you have no sheets... so Ebay I went, and bought another sheet today... only to sit back and say ... hummm... he could have wore that new weatherbeeta I bought a month a ago .. or the other Baker... BUT, thanks to you Windswept I am thinking ... it could be worse.... I could have 15 ponies to go with my blanket, sheet, scrim, cooler issue. Thanks for justifying for me! :D

OK TBlitz... Spill it... is this sale online and is it still going on?

haha, no. The place my parents work got a whole bunch of horse stuff sent as samples to them, but they don't sell horse stuff so had no need for it and sold it dirt cheap (they're not allowed to just give stuff away at their company) to my parents and my dad's boss, since they're ther ones with the horse children (the stuff was a gift for their 'grandponies').

Now there is an amazing tack shop about 20 minutes away from my school that sells nice horsecare stuff way cheap! I get my $3 halters and $2 leadropes and $3 bellboots from there whenever I can't stay away any longer.

Weatherford, TX. It's called Horseman's supply and has mostly western tack but has almost every horsecare item for less than I can find it anywhere else. I get to make a trip there either tomorrow or Saturday :D I've got to stock up on supplies for the winter since I'm leaving the travelling circus (aka- the animal collection) at home during thanksgiving!
