View Full Version : Jingle For CA Firestorm Victims. Update: Oct 24 Donation Links Post 1
Little Indian
Oct. 21, 2007, 01:03 PM
A fire has consumed 500 plus acres so far. Pepperdine University has been evacuated and all Malibu and Kanan, Malibu, and Topanga barns have been told to evacuate their horses and other large animals. Hodge's Castle has burned to the ground as well as Malibu Church. Please send jingles to Daytimedrama. They have no power and are waiting on being told to evacuate themselves and their three dogs. The fire has already jumped PCH. In the time that I have written this, a home on the beach has begun to burn.

1,000 acres have now burned. According to DTD, Malibu hasn't had a really big burn since 1993 so there is a lot of underbrush that will fuel the fire.
Just heard now that the Malibu Animal Hospital has burned now also.

With all the wildfires in CA and other western states, why don't the homeowners clear out the underbrush themselves, or the state? I admit this might be a naive question as I'm very unfamiliar with those areas... :(
In the meantime my heart goes out to those living in the area and, more importantly, the horse farms. :(

Ugghhh....I moved to Los Angeles in 1994 shortly after the Malibu fires. It was so sad to drive along PCH and see all of the houses burned with just the chimneys standing. I hope they get everyone(people and animals)out in time. Malibu is such a beautiful place it's such a shame.

We have mandetory brush clearing, but some people cannot afford to do it.

The fire is currently burning towards DTD's home.

The homeowners do have mandatory brush clearance and most comply but it doesn't mean much when the winds are whipping around and can send embers a mile down the road. Unfortunately the reality is that these mountains were made to burn. It's part of the ecosystem. People and their animals have put themselves in the way of a very natural process.

It is hard to imagine unless you live here and understand the diversity of land and weather conditions that make these fires so destructive. There is currently a fire nearby in the Santa Rosa Valley and I am on standby to evacuate my friend's horses. I don't think that just clearing the underbrush will stop those fires, you would have to clear cut the whole sides and that will cause mudslides.
I used to know a fellow thru our training border collies that had a contract to graze his goats thru those hills to keep the brush down.
That is how he trained his trialing dogs.
Here we had last year an area larger than some smaller states burn down, several hundred thousands of acres.
Nothing can stop fires when the wind blows really hard and all other conditions are right for it, like plenty of fuel for the fire in dry grass and other.
I hope all are staying safe, since they know it is coming their way.:(

Perhaps a bad time to ask this question - but in an area such as that - where fire and mudslides are part of normal life - do animal/livestock owners have good organizations to help them, evacuation plans and sites, that sort of thing?

I used to live in Latigo Canyon with horses at home (not mine, the property owners) and I have a friend with horses at the top of Winding Way...hope they got out safely! I loved living in Malibu but the fire danger is what scared me back to living in the city. It is the most beautiful place on earth with the best weather imaginable, but after they closed Kanan one day while I was at work and I had to go rushing home to make sure I was home if they called for evacuation so that my cats didn't get stuck there...I decided it was just too risky. I hope everyone was able to get their families and animals out safely.
I know a lot of horses who live in Topanga Canyon...I will have to go read the news now and hope it's not heading that way. :( Topanga would be a nightmare to evacuate, tons of horses there and one 2-lane road out.

Gee, the goat idea has a ring to it. I know of people here who make a living leasing goat herds for goverrnment owned tracts of land. They would be a natural for the small underbrush, perhaps not the manzanita (some deep memory just clicked that manzanita is fire resistant?).

In fires I have seen, volunteers show up with empty horse trailers. Nearest fairgrounds is usual evac site. From the Santa Barbara fire many years ago, a good point was made that whether your horse gets evacuated or not may depend on if horsie would load quickly and easily, in any trailer, by anyone, in a time of great excitement and crisis.

J Swan I have been through two fires that were threatening and I am amazed to find how resourceful horse people are here. It is a grapevine of concerned , ready and willing volunteers. The phone starts ringing if the fire is anywhere close with generous offers of help. Conversely if we can help we begin calling anyone affected. I have a client in Malibu that has no power and as of this morning she is OK. Another in Topanga but she left for Bataan this morning :( . Humans and structures are the priority for firefighters so horse evacuation is more of a grassroots effort.

I board at a big public stable in So Cal, and the facility has a very good evacuation plan. Basically, there is a call list there so that all trainers and people in charge get informed. Everyone who owns a horse trailer there is on the call list, and they have all agreed to be emergency shippers if the need arises.
Here's hoping that all animals and people in harm's way get out safely.
And yes, California is made to burn. It has been the driest year on record, which doesn't help.
Some places do controlled burns, but in some areas it just isn't safe.

Sometimes you can clear the brush, but the wind whips the embers and if they fall on your roof (and it isn't fireproof)...there goes your home. The Santa Ana winds swoop down from the high desert and are funneled through the mountains. And, also, we are in a severe drought.
I remember the bad fire up by Pioneertown a couple of years ago. Some folks barely escaped with their horses, as it happened during work hours. Neighbors courageously helped families who couldn't save their livestock and removed horses from corrals as best they could. Unfortunately, one horse did get burned, on his nose.
You have to realize that the winds that fan these fires can be 60, 70, 80, even 100 miles perhour. NOTHING can stop them. I've seen "my mountains", the San Gabriels, on fire several times during my lifetime. It is AWFUL. I pray for these people tonight, and their animals.

With all the wildfires in CA and other western states, why don't the homeowners clear out the underbrush themselves, or the state?
This a a HUGE area and very rugged. Plus all the vegetation is "brush". It's a fire-adapted ecosystem and it will burn sooner or later no matter what people do so most people only clear the mandated area around their houses, if that. If you saw the area post-fire you'd actually be amzed how little damage there is, but I imagine that will change as people build in stupider and stupider places. Box canyons? yeah that's dumb.
I remember the 1993 fires very well- it seems like it burns to the ocean every 10-15 years at the most, I think beore that it was 87??

She had a 3 horse trailer and 5 horses. She had to let two go hoping that they would get to safety as the fire was burning her property. I have already wrapped all of mine as a precaution incase a fire starts up here and we have to leave in the middle of the night. We too are in one of those canyons like Box Canyon, Bell Canyon (we are the next canyon over from Box). We only have one way in and one way out. We evacuated in 2003 and in 2005. Yes we do live in an area that is at high risk for an array of disasters. However some of this danger is exacerbated by our coastal commission that disallows clearing around designated wildlife open space.
This is the same coastal commission that would today disallow the many stables in the Malibu area to be built. They have a very hard line attitude about the impact that horses have on the environment and point a finger towards horses as being a reason that the ocean has high levels of pollutants and alarming levels of bacteria after storms.
FYI horse manure is far more eco friendly than human waste and many homes in the Malibu area and specifically the Malibu Colony are still on a septic system rather than a sewer system. When we experience huge volumes of rain these toxins are released and end up going directly into the Pacific.
A lot of these problems are political and not at all based on scientific research. Coastal commission is a watchdog that has roots in some very well meaning conservationists but also impedes the ability for homeowners to remove scrub brush and deadwood. They also like to spear front efforts to stop all open space land use to recreational use and seem to have an agenda against horses, hikers and bicyclist that may spoil the natural environment.
It is a sad fact that fires are a natural disaster but even more so when those that would clear areas to make themselves safer have their hands tied . Sorry for the rant... it just happens to be one of the reasons I chose to buy horse property outside the jurisdiction of coastal.
PS LI if you are in need don't hesitate calling me. I have room for yours and a couple more.

They did. She let them go with halters and lead ropes and her phone number on their halters. A reporter from one of the local TV stations was able to grab them both when they made their way down to the bottom of the canyon. From there they were able to get a ride to the local community college (it has an equestrian center attached). Evacuating is very scary. In 2005, my then 4 month old colt had his very first trailer loading experience thanks to the Topanga fire ;)

We had to pack 8 horses in a 6 horse trailer and he was in the front of the trailer and my mare and colt were in the back and he never made a peep. I believe Sandstone took stallions in in 2003 as did El Campeon. A lot of the bigger barns will take stallions in. I will be thinking of all of you and hoping those winds die down.
Where I live our problems usually consist of flooding. Unfortunately - if it floods so badly lives are in danger - the roads are closed. There's only one road that can get anyone to safety - and it can be under 5 feet of water in some places. If a hurricane comes up the Chesapeake - (and they do), we'd need to build an Ark.
I'll take this opportunity for Virginia horse owners to consider volunteering to house evacuated equines in the event of a disaster. Here is the contact info:

The winds up here from the Santa Ana's are insane and I've got most of the mares doubled up in stalls to protect as many as possible. Stallions all in their stalls, and had to even put a couple mares in the same barn with them (separate stalls!).
Closed the breezeway up for a couple donkeys.....
And still have horses in pastures using trees for protection because the winds have torn down the shelters.

And a lot of the problems are the bloody politicians and tree-huggers. Can't create a safety zone because some idiot rodent might be unhappy. Might be a Pansy's Elbow Ragwort that's rare nowadays, so no digging or draining. Go after the idiots in the county and state government who prevent people protecting their homes & farms or the eco-psycos who prefer bambi to you.
If you have a horse that rears and dumps you with regularity...you get rid of the horse. If you have an asthmatic kid, you don't smoke and are prepared for attacks but try and minimize the triggers. There are "difficulties" you face because you can't avoid or really plan for them...you're a victim when these happen. There's also the things you do when you know they've happened before and you keep doing what didn't work in the past...these are called volunteers (think of people who stay with abusive SOs or people who rebuild in a flood plain or fire zone).
But...if your home has burned down 3 times, don't rebuild on the ashes and pretend it's not going to happen in a year or two.

You'd see that not everyone is unprepared or oblivious to the potential danger in which they live. If one used your logic, no one would ever live in any coastal region because of hurricane threat, or in a mountainous one because of the risk of blizzards and winter-related threats, or in a desert where wildfires can occur. Especially when set by humans, as these were. Nice of you to be so sympathetic to folks who are victims of an arsonist.
I feel sorry for you.

Trakehner, while I don't entirely disagree with a few of your general points, I can't imagine thinking that it is OK to express your opinion in such a manner to and about people who are dealing with such a scary crisis... This is definately a case of "if it isn't nice, keep it to yourself".
May the winds die down, and rain move in... SOON!!!

And a lot of the problems are the bloody politicians and tree-huggers. Can't create a safety zone because some idiot rodent might be unhappy.
Pretty hard to create a safety zone with 100mile per hour winds and humidity in the single digits.

My child's school was cancelled for the day due to the fire. We're in the Temecula area. Apparently there's a fire in Rancho Bernardo also. Fires seem to be popping up everywhere.
I too saw the horses in Agua Dulce going up the hill away from the fire. The reporter said they had all been in an arena together and that the ranch owners were evacuating. Someone saw that the fast approaching fire might take the ranch and let the horses out of the arena. They all took off up the hill away from the fire. It looked like about 20 horses (?) some of them were really beautiful. There was a huge white horse that looked like it might be either a warmblood or an Andalusion, galloping up the hill.
I certainly hope they are all safe now. Hoping everyone gets out safely.

I'm sitting here watching the news, and they are showing several horses in a huge dirt pasture in Malibu, with fire just about on all sides...
Homeowners at another fire are reporting that their horses are stuck in trailers at their property, and they can't get up there to get them out...
Really tragic, and as a horseperson, I feel so helpless to just sit here and watch this play out.
I'm wondering how horse-savvy the firepeople are in So. Cal.... and if they're not... WHY not? It seems so necessary, to me.

The firefighters are overwhelmed doing their job, which is fighting fires. Animal Control does have a Equine Response Team of volunteers that work together with the fire departments on trying to get out as many as possible. Let's face it, even people in Animal Control can spend the majority of their career without dealing with horses.

They're trying to get the Del Mar fairgrounds open as an emergency evacuation point. Qualcomm stadium (where the Chargers play) is already open and set up to receive up to 100,000 people. The fire has crossed I-15 at Carmel Valley Road and they're trying to keep it from spreading into Rancho Santa Fe.

Excuuuse the bloody hell out of me as I have more to deal with than your banalities right now ... BUT ... my home has never burned down once, much less 4 times. Today will be the 2nd time in 15 years that I have had to be evacuated (it's coming down the street - my PC will be last to leave the house), and I pray my home is still here.
BUT - there are 100 mph winds outside right now. Sparks that jump over 2 miles and start new fires well away from any fire area.
And you can sanctimoniously spout off back in VA? I just HOPE you never experience a drought ...
And you know what those tree huggers have done for us? Provided us with HORSE TRAILS to ride on ... developers would shove horses entirely out of the area ...
So, who pee'd on your cornflakes this morning?

I wanted to share pictures from my viewpoint. I took them yesterday. We are basically surrounded on all sides by all of the different fires and are in the belly of everything. We have Auga Dulce and Canyon Country on one side, Camerillo on the other, Malibu up and to the side and the now controlled (put out?) Chatsworth fire. If it gets to Newhall, we are pretty much a straight shot from Camelot. That is how it got to us in 2005

I live in the Oakland hills where the big fire burnt up 75% of my street. It is absolutely disgusting. These particular fire disasters are about crime, not location. You cannot escape arsonists by moving.
I can agree that there is validity to the point of not rebuilding in disaster areas - in an appropriate thread or venue, I could point out even more examples where I completely agree with this. This thread isn't that venue.
Takes some seriously low self esteem or a real bad day to drive a fellow horse board poster to decide that a thread devoted to a life and death disaster in progress is the proper venue to vent their spleen about some off topic opinion they possess. And if you can use any part of your brain, you can run this thing around in it enough to see that such commentary is off topic, and not much more than a cruel jab to people still bleeding. What is the point? Did it make you feel good to say that? You sure managed to make some terrified and sad people feel worse. Congrats.
I wish everyone the best of luck in out running this thing - you have my positive thoughts.

I got the news at http://fireblog.signonsandiego.com/
If you scroll down the page, you get the following story regarding horses:
Race track's 1,800 horse stalls are full
11:57 a.m.
The Del Mar Racetrack's 1,800 horse stalls are full and it's unclear where any more horses will be held.
Del Mar started taking horses in last night, but there had already been animals there due to a jumping competition that had run from Wednesday to Sunday.
As of 9:45 this morning, there were only 100 stalls left and by 11 a.m., people were told they were full.
Officials were bringing horses to the Scream Zone area temporarily and were also considering double-stalling the horses, housing two horses per stall.
Earlier today, horse owners were told they could bring their horses to The Oaks horse facility in Orange County, but that option was called off, reportedly due to winds and possible fire threat in that area.
In additions to horses at Del Mar, the track facility is also housing dogs, litters of puppies and goats.
Feed, hay and water was being provided.
People were being housed separately, being sent over to the fair facilities.

Florida has hurricanes, Buffalo has a ton of snow and California burns every year...and the surprise is?
If you build in a flood plain or where there are fires every year...you should expect problems.

when I lived in LA during 93 fires, my horse at the end of Winding Way (at Kate's) was evacuated to the Malibu Tennis & Riding Club.
I boarded in Topanga and had to evacuate to Camarillo during another fire. The barn where Mette trains from was surrounded by fire, but was used as an outpost for firefighters so was spared.
I boarded at Middle Ranch in Lakeview Terrace and was luckily away at a clinic during another fire, when a barn full of horses had phone numbers spray painted onto their bodies and turned out together, where they kicked each other to bits (these are barn stall horses for the most part in CA.)
A friend who has her horses in Chesebro evacuated to Ventura County Fairgrounds.
Another friend had her house burnt down. She said the fire came up so fast she only had time to grab her cats and run.
It's imperative that horses will load into a trailer NO MATTER WHAT because even then, they are frightened/terrified by the smell, smoke and vision of fire. My horse did not load the first time. It was horrible. They had to leave her behind. Thankfully, a bigger rig came soon thereafter and we had to chase her in, using not so classical methods.....
Even CNN's video and personal pictures can not show the panic, helplessness and sheer terror that fires in Southern CA gives. Also, they close lots of the freeway access so you can't get around easily. Horsepeople are most excellent to each other, everyone out with their trailers, opening their vacant stalls to strangers.
I send jingles and vigorous raindances from Oregon!! Hope the winds stop very soon.

The correct response is to hook up the trailer, load up the pets, grab all your vital paperwork and the family jewels, empty the safe, wrap the horses, hose the roof and then nonchalantly sit back and act like this-happens-every-year-so-chill-out
My family lived in Ventura County for 15 years and we had at least one fire per year that burned within a half mile of the house. They really enforce the firebreaks there and the firefighters are amazing so we were rarely worried. 93 and 2003 got pretty hairy though. Those eucalyptus trees are the absolute devil when it comes to exploding and sending fire everywhere.

Posted this on the San Diego thread
Anyone with an available horse trailer can call the San Diego Animal Support Foundation immediately at 619-847-8755.
The El Cajon Animal Shelter, located at 1275 North Marshall, will be open today to receive domestic pets and small livestock animals for emergency boarding. Donations of cat and dog food (canned), blankets and towels are welcomed for those wishing to help.
The Westfield Parkway mall, at 415 Parkway Plaza, has opened an area in the Southeast corner of the outdoor mall near Best Buy & Borders to large livestock since Lakeside rodeo grounds have filled. They've also opened up the Northwest section of their mall parking lot for RV's and campers.
The new Home Depot location at 298 Fletcher Parkway, scheduled to open in mid November, have opened a section of their parking lot to large livestock, RV's & Campers. They also have water available there and port-a-potties available leftover from the construction of the new store.
Granite Hills High School, located at 1719 E. Madison Avenue has opened their parking lots only for large livestock, RV's and campers.
Due to air quality alerts all outdoor activities are canceled today and until further notice. Updates will be given daily. All indoor activities will be held today and until further notice. Therefore recreation centers are open today and indoor instructional classes will be held.
CERT Team members are welcome to help if they're available at the evacuation areas, especially if they are experienced in the handling of large livestock.
Important: Animal Shelters have received literally hundreds of calls in the last few hours from good Samaritans who are offering room, yards, and land for livestock. There is a serious lack of horse trailers to transport these animals. Anyone with an available horse trailer can call the San Diego Animal Support Foundation immediately at 619-847-8755.
The La Mesa Community Center is making sandwiches for bag lunches for evacuees and they could use sandwich meats, apples and oranges. They are located at 4975 Memorial Drive, just off La Mesa Boulevard.

The Ramona fire started right by Creek Hollow, according to one of our boarders - some horses were evacuated, others got turned out into the arenas & apparently (from a boarder there) everyone left. Word is Colleen's house is gone - no word on the rental. There's another thread here:
http://chronicleforums.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=119076
fire is now burning down Wildcat Canyon, evauation is recommended but not yet mandatory for Crest, Harbison Canyon & south Alpine. Fallbrook is mandatory. Power is back on in Descanso but parts of I-8 are closed due to fire/high wind. We can take horses who tie here at Willow Glen Equestrian Center on Willow Glen Drive in El Cajon - all stalls & corrals are full, but we can tie horses to a solid fence in the front arena. If the winds stay where they are the fire will pass to the southeast of us, just like the Cedar fire did. We aso have some parking if you need it. The city of San Diego has also just opened up Fiesta Island for 500 evacuees with livestock.

OMG - in one of those articles it said that Golden Eagle Farm was in the path and the grooms did not have a chance to evacuate the horses. They have quite a few head (over 200) there with most of them scheduled to go to Barretts next week. What a nightmare for all of the people battling these blazes.

From what I've heard Camelot is okay.
I have just driven to Santa Barbara as I have a class tonight that I cannot miss. Going through Camerillo was like driving through a war zone. The smoke was so thick you needed to use your lights or else it was difficult to see in front of you. Mountains that are normally very visable, you could hardly see. We are now also getting smoke from the Santa Ynez fire as of right now.

Does anyone have any news about Creek Hollow Ranch and/or Ramona in general?
That article mentions Golden Eagle Farm. Word is, they got Salt Lake and a few weanlings out ok, the rest of the horses are fine as well.
Yikes, this disaster is scary. I'm not particularly close to any fires (closest one for me is the Santa Ynez fire) but Santa Barbara is on Red Flag Alert. It's been 17 years since Painted Cave, and I still remember that like it was yesterday, especially considering how close it got to my house.

This has been insane. I left with the trailer this morning at 10 to pick up two horses that my friend has at home in Topanga - they are on alert to evacuate. My phone started ringing just after I got back. There was a fire directly across the street from my driveway in some lemon orchards. I must have missed it because when I pulled in there weren't any crews in sight. Fortunately my friend's 30 yr old blind mare loaded without incident and her buddy just followed her in. My thoughts and prayers are with those that are in imminent danger. I hate these damn Santa Anas and the destruction that they cause.

Someone posted on Equinesite that their friend lost 5 horses :( They only had enough room on the trailer for so many and thought they had time to make a second trip.
Ok, maybe not the right time to ask but I am curious as I have never been in a situation like this, can people ride horses out and pony more or is the fire so fast moving that you just don't have time, or horses are panicking etc.?

As far as I've heard Camelot is still OK - - I also know that they have a well established evacuation plan in place. The Stevenson Ranch Fire that just flared up is directly north of them but according to news reports they are expecting this fire to head west (as much as they can guess about these winds at all!!!). I know from experience that the Camelot folks have done this before - I would expect that they are already putting the first few steps of their plan in place even as I type . . . just in case.
I am just a mile or so away from the northern end of the Canyon Country fire and I have to say that I have been exceedingly impressed with how the horse community has pulled together to help each other out. One of our guys is just up the street from us and we had folks spend the all night at the barn to make sure that the horses were alright. So far so good - he's snug as a bug in a rug right now!!!:) Thanks goodness he's with people who have level heads and have a firm plan in place.

And a lot of the problems are the bloody politicians and tree-huggers. .
One extreme (overpopulation and destruction) has brought about the other (your so called tree huggers). This world has a delicate ecosystem that man is screwing up.
VA is not immune to similar disasters (it is my home state)--just go to the NOAA weather disaster history page and look them up. Just be thankful this is not you or someone close to you because you are not living on hallowed ground.....
I know when my barn burned down here this spring in 30mph winds there was NO stopping it or saving anything in it. It burned so hot is melted everything but metal (and even bent and warped that) and blew over into the corn fields. I cannot imagine 100mph winds fueling a fire in dry conditions.
To those having to deal with this disaster, my heart goes out to you. It seems to me like I hear of alot of these fires in CA being arson related. That is even more sickening. I'll take the tree hugger over the arsonist.

Cashela these things are so unpredictable that even the best laid plans are sometimes inadequate. I have a friend that called last year when we were on standby evac. She volunteers to transport every year after surviving the Malibu fire that burnt to the ocean. She recalled leading horses down to the shore and hearing the cries of small animals that were being overtaken by the flames. She had single handedly gotten all of the horses to safety when she remembered that the farm dog might still be contained in one of the ranch houses. She ran back and sadly the dog had died. She is still not able to really talk about it. I am terribly sorry for all those that have suffered a loss in these fires.

FALLBROOK EVACUEES
I'm up in Anza (30 minutes from Temecula).
I can't offer barn space, but I have a couple pastures and the round pen that all have some sort of treeline defense from the wind up here if anyone is having problems finding space for their horses. Masks would be good to help protect eyes.
Its not a perfect solution, but we aren't being threatened by fires.
I needed, I can manage a stallion or two.
The mini-pen is open as well and has a HUGE pen that can probably manage a couple small ponies.

While you do make some valid points, they are lost in your customary holier-than-thou, I-never-make-a-mistake rhetoric that many of us find offensive. I think the folks who live in these areas know the risk. It would be nice if you would bother to actually read the responses of folks like CA ASB, who do have plans and are prepared to implement them.
Nice post ESG!
those of us who live here do so because we LOVE THE LIFE HERE!!!
There are always potential dangers and I see lots of those in other parts of the country but SoCal offers a lifestyle that is unique and it's not by accident that so many peeps move here...it's a gorgeous place most of the time- right now we have a bit of a bad time- surrounded by fires- hoping for the wind to subside...but we are all helping each other and especially in the horse-community there is a lot of networking and awareness...;)...no patronizing required- but jingles are always welcome and needed right now- for about another 24-48 hours....

OC Fair Ground is closed to animals at this time.
Industry Hills Expo Center will take 125 large animals (626) 330-0324. They are located off of the 60 Freeway between the 57 and 605 freeways

With all the wildfires in CA and other western states, why don't the homeowners clear out the underbrush themselves, or the state? I admit this might be a naive question as I'm very unfamiliar with those areas... :(
Someone may have answered this, but science teacher in me is going to step in.
1. That's the ecosystem: Its a chapparel. The terrain and the climate create frequent burns and so the plant life is dry due to the low availability of water, and grows quickly. Nature takes care of overgrowth by burning since its not a grazing land.
2. Terrain: very steep canyons where the fires have to be fought from the air largely. Inclines can really speed a fire up and create even more volatile air currents which can ground air tankers and helicopters from doing their job as effectively as they might in other areas.
3. The Santa Ana winds: they come up fast and off the land which makes them very dry and warm. They are gusty and really push fires in a firestorm. The fires down there are very different and very scary.
Yes, people have to create defensible spaces, but that is sometimes not enough. This area is MEANT to burn. Its what it does. You'll no more stop wildfires in So. Cal than you'll stop tornados in the midwest. All you can do is defend. :( And sometimes that's not even enough.
Then you just have to hope that people are smart and don't do dumb things like try to mow down weeds in late summer or fall with a metal blade mower! Use a weedwhacker with string and have a hose handy. Then there's the nutjob arsonists.... THere are freaks out there.

Although I'm right in the middle of all this, I feel helpless too. My house is on the coast and thus very safe. My horse is at the OC Fairgrounds and also safe. I helped unload horses all day, and that was about all I could do. I feel horrible not being able to do anything, watching all this destruction right before me yet being able to do absolutely nothing about it. My trainer (khobstetter) has been driving around all day, getting horses to safety, picking up as many horses as possible and getting them anywhere safe. Our equestrian center filled up fast...I think we ran out of permanent stalls about midday, and I know Del Mar is at capacity as well.

I posted several pages back that there is room in central CA along the I-5 corridor for displaced horses. There are trailers and trucks enough to transport 25 horses (in a pinch), but high winds through the mountains make it dangerous to haul through there at this point.
I hope horses don't need to move so far away (we're about 2.5 to 3 hours away from Santa Clarita), but if they do, there are safe places here for them.
Also, I know some people in the Lancaster/Hesperia area--who are without fire so far--sand doesn't burn. They could also take in horses. (I'll call them and tell them you're coming .)

It is probably a bit hard to organize this sort of effort in the midst of hte crisis, but perhaps someone is good at such things or is holds office in a group/horseman's club/etc. that can set up a donation account? Could CDS chapters etc. be part?
I would love to be able to help by sending funds to help pay for feeding horses displaced, or sending tack supplies..... I'm sure there are others who would like to do the same.

This is the best map (or rather most frightening) (http://lang.dailynews.com/socal/editorial/inter/wildfires/socal.html)I've found.
My prayers are there for you - as well as the Irish nation's - believe me, it is on all the news here and prayers are being sent up everywhere.
Take care and don't take chances.
And for anyone who really wants to get away - there is a cheap flight to Ireland on Aer Lingus from LAX - I will pick you up in Shannon, if necessary.

Having grown up in Santa Barbara county, and having been evacuated (horses were transported without me knowing where they went), all this just brings tears to my eyes for all of you people trying to save your animals while trying to save your homes.
I keep viewing evacuation spots (fair grounds, etc) on Internet video and I am struck that horses don't appear to have any indentifying papers/marks that are in view. If the horse gets evacuated again, will the new place keep track? That happened to me in the 1980s; it was tramautic not knowing where my horse was for a day.
So, I have one little tip that I heard and thought was quite good. If you can't stay with your horses or if you are in contact with someone who is transporting your horse, paint (or get painted) your telephone number as large as possible on your horse. Spray paint is ideal but in a pinch, a can of paint and brush would work. A sharpie will also work on light colored or leather halters to write your name and telephone number.
Thinking of you all.

I live in NY and I have family and friends in Poway. The night before last Lucidi farms was evacutated to Del Mar race track. Are they safe there or will this fire spread as far as the ocean? My girl friend whose horse is now there was evacuated out of her home as well as my sister who lives up the grade from Lucidi. We have not been able to reach them and do not know where they are or how they are.
This is awful. I feel for all of you in this horrible time...RAIN,RAIN,RAIN

Current fire maps for San Diego can be found at www.signonsandiego.com on the right side of the homepage. Top map is Del Mar Rancho Santa Fe Ramona area. Bottom map is Bonita Chula Vista area near the mexican border.
Spoke to a friend near La jolla this morning at 5 am. He, wife and pets are leaving to come up to the Bay Area before I5 gets closed. Offered to bring my dad but he won't go. He's not in fire danger but he's in poor health and the air quality could do him in.
This is just a f'in nightmare. Jingles for everyone on the front lines.

Blueshadow, how's your friend in Alpine? Still okay, hopefully.
I'm EBO, I just woke up and all I can see on the map is that Castaic is on fire. That usually means that the I-5 between Castaic and Frazier Park will go up in flames, even if it takes a while...there is a possibility that three horses will need transportation out of the far west Antelope Valley and down towards you sometime in the next couple of days - I will let you know. Thanks for thinking of them.:)

I don't believe La Jolla is in any immanent danger (I live in downtown SD, but go to UCSD for grad school) - I have a professor who lives up there, near UCSD's campus & he's housing -another- prof who had to evacuate thanks to the Ramona fire; we (being a hardcore department :P) met at his house for seminar yesterday, since classes were cancelled. I thought it was a bit of funny in an extraordinarily unfunny period.
In any case, I've been taking my cue from my profs (who have been here decades) and keeping an eye on what UCSD has to say - which, right now, is simply 'hold tight.' I just can't believe all this - I'm from the East coast & snow days are fun (if rare), but I'd happily NEVER have another 'wildfire day'.

Rain would probably be the worst thing that could happen as it would trigger numerous mud slides. I cannot find ANYTHING on the news here in Santa Barbara. In fact, I cannot seem to find any news here right now! I do know though that I left my window open this past weekend and my once white sheets are black with ash. I feel so out of the loop, I will probably be listening to am 1070 most of the day. They have pretty good fire coverage.

Horse stables for 1,700 available in Indio
Posted @ 7:17 PM
Evacuees are invited to stable their horses at a horse farm in the Thermal-Indio area.
A private citizen, recommended by a California Department of Food & Agriculture veterinarian, has volunteered enough property, staff, food, and water resources to care for up to 1,700 horses. For more information, County residents can call (760) 399-2716.
I received an e-mail that the HITS showgrounds were taking horses in Thermal. Maybe this is the location discussed above.
The e-mail also stated that Oaks/Blenheim was taking horses.
So far I think all my horses are OK. The OC fire is still about 7-8 miles north/west of them. A fellow Coth'er has her house and horses MUCH closer but the "good news" is the area between her and the current fire burned about 6 months ago. My little guy is at a TB farm out in Perris where it is relatively flat and well irrigated. I (hopefully) don't have to worry about him.
Joh Bragg just moved his OC operation to Silverado Canyon/Williams Canyon where the Lefmans also train. I heard that area was evacuated. Hopefully they are all doing OK.

yeah, she is here at the condo in Carp because her grandmother's (where her family and dogs were evacuated to) house does not have running water. I do not believe she is going to class though to keep an eye on the fire. A house did burn on her street, although it was a little closer to the fire station (it wasn't hers) and Sean Penn's airstreams and property has burned (also on her street). The fire has apparently moved from Carbon Canyon/Mesa (her area) to a neighboring canyon. In 1993, the Fire burned right up to the edge of her home and it stopped. We've seen her home a few times in the last few days thanks to news coverage and it is still standing.

Right now the "witch" fire seems to be very volatile. From reports of people still there, it seems to be doubling back a bit towards Escondido. From what I have heard, the air quality at Del Mar Horsepark is "okay", but they are keeping a VERY close eye on the fire as it travels down Del Dios Highway.
Your thoughts are appreciated. We had an "evacuation party" last night. It seems like, when in a crisis, most people grab photos, important documents, and any wine still in the fridge.
It lends a bit of the surreal to the entire deal.

If anybody is interested I posted possible donation information on the donation thread. I do not know if either feed store is doing anything of the sort but it wouldn't hurt to call and find out. You can call Red Barn
Feed at 818 345 2510 to see if they will deliver hay or halters or electrolytes to Pierce
College. You will obviously have to give them your cc number but they are reliable as I order from them all of the time. You can also try calling
Kahoots feed. I do not have their number off hand as I'm typing this from my blackberry but you can google search Kahoots Feed Chatsworth California and that should give you a phone number with an 818 area code. They too may be able to deliver hay feed halters fly masks electrolytes etc to pierce college.

Where on San Fernando is this? My brother's house is in the San Fernando/Lyons Ave area. He lost his last house in the Northridge quake. My nerves are firing like crazy here. Any info would be appreciated.
Hi, Lyons is close to where the santa clarita/newhall fires are - is your brother close to the I-5 where he lives?

I just heard that the OC fire flared up and is burning through Modjeska and is out of control in that area. The firefighters are letting it go. :(
The bright side is I just spoke with my vet who said things are very quiet because almost everyone evacuated early. Though my trainer received a call from a terrified friend because they hadn't gotten their horses yet, and were too late to do so. Don't know the details, however.

Coming late to the thread, but offering up multiple prayers to The Big Guy and a very special prayer for brave Nikki.
Please God, keep those who are fighting this fire safe.
Please be with those who have chosen to stay behind and protect their animals.
Please be with those who are separated from loved ones, both two-legged and four-legged.
Pleaes be with the animals who are displaced, terrified and lost.
Give them all the peace and assurance You can grant and see them all safely through this disaster.
Amen

Feisome, who is the trainer on Winding Way in Malibu? Is that Susan? If so, my friend's daughter trains with her and I've met her at a show. My friend lives higher up on Winding Way and said his property/horses were not endangered.

Okay, I'm going to check in since I've been *away* from the PC for a few days. Thought I'd give some of you what it was like yesterday ...
Before I start, I still have a house thanks to the wonderful firemen from Yorba Linda. Anyone who has watched the news and actually seen what they now are terming the "Foothill Ranch" or Santiago Canyon fire got to see my house last night. They filmed from our cul-de-sac (from what I've been told). TWO helo drops directly on my house and my neighbors house saved it the first time.
Come back the first time at 10:30 pm ... two guys in a truck pull up in front of my house ... they're from 30 miles away (so what do YOU think they were doing there) and we scared them off. Got the cops on the line and they came out. They apologized to us for not being there sooner - the firemen tell you to leave the house unlocked so they can get in to fight a fire ... and then the looters show up with open doors.
Went back down to the barn to retrieve my cat. Second time around, I came back at 11:30, took a shower and was talking to my friend (and watching the news) when I heard the firetrucks pull up again. Went upstairs to look out front - and there are 2 firetrucks out there - and sparks flying.
Think better of being in just a robe and start to get dressed. Look out the back window and now there are embers flying over the house and landing in the backyard creating tiny spot fires. Start dressing faster. Go back to the front of the house - and less than 30 feet away across the cul-de-sac is a 40 foot wall of flame. :o:eek:
Grab cat, keys and purse. Remember shoes. Jump in car and leave again as firefighters are pulling hoses across my yard and saving house again.
Blueshadow - Nick and Miss P are fine. For anyone in the area, Serrano Creek is accepting horses. We are tying them anywhere we can in the arenas.
My trainer just called from Temecula (1.25 hours away w/no traffic). Fire seems to be spreading that direction now (she's at the corner of dePortola and Anza), so I may be headed out there to help her evac 30 head. She's by herself as the other trainer is at Arab Nationals and her help lives in Escondido and can't get out.
For those concerned about Encinitas - the voluntary evac is for everyone currently east of the 5 freeway. However, the Encinitas Senior Center has been set up as an evac center. That is immediately next door to Oak Crest Junior High - which is at the top of the hill just west of El Camino Real - so if they are in the older part of Encinitas (west of El Camino), they are probably still in good shape.

Looters? now that's LOW. how can they even get back there when everyone has been evacuated? Looters? geezzzzz:no:
catknsn...I boarded on Winding Way 16 years ago and there was no trainer at Kate's place back then. Now? I don't even know if Kate is still there, as I heard her husband passed away. Just lost track. but I DO remember the fires. It's a horrible experience.
