LOL they are the same peeps who posted this gem of an ad:

WWW.SanctityOfHope.com, is a local charity that you can check out on the internet. As a sideline for raising money we accept a few horses for donation(check with your CPA, but most times you can write off the full value of horse as donation). We rehome them by selling them to a new home(Usually the new owner can also write off the cost of the horse as a donation to the charity also), again, check with your CPA. We will pay all vet bills, farrier bills and find a new LOVING, SPECIAL home for your horse. We are unable to accept injured horses at this time. Usually it is a situation where you have a trained horse, and for personal reason you decide you no longer can keep the horse and need to find a new home for your friend. We verify references, attempt to make sure it is a GREAT fit, for new owner AND horse and place horse in new home. Call Diane if you are interested. We have trainers we work with to make sure horse is kept in condition. We do not board horses.

Anyone else wonder if FHOTD will pick this one up and run with it?

ok...just noticed one of their sale horses "MUST GO due to Personal circumstances" They are trying to sell her for $1500 basically, but they want to buy an Olympic caliber horse? Yep...they probably do expect to get it for free. Like I said...they live in their own little world.

I think they may be taking the "Dream Horse" part just a little too literal.
In America we are taught to dream. At what point does extreme optimism become delusion? I think they may have passed that point.

Hmm, I have a warmblood mare (although Swedish, not Holsteiner) that will be 13 in eight years. Her granddaddy was in the Olympics, so that means she definitely has the talent to go, right? :D She loves to jump the pasture fence and is a natural at passage so I'm sure she could qualify in both dressage and show jumping. Hey, she loves to run too so maybe she could also qualify in eventing! Sherwood is less than 200 miles from me. Maybe they could come look at her this weekend. Oh, I'm so excited! Do not take them to the auction and have personally rescued horses one at a time. I own 3 with my daughters horses included.
SanctityOfHope is a great organization & I do not care how the "Buzz" started about it, we proudly sold our first donated horse yesterday!!! Yeah, Congrats to Rosalee and her sister, her own horse needs knee surgery and she bought ours to do OHSET.
I did put the ad on as a joke for my daughter, glad you enjoyed it!
I am always harassing her about going to the Olympics, and yes, she does have a horse that she will be going through the levels on Dressage and Jumping. And again, yes, I do 3 day eventing with a Gaited Horse! She loves her job, we are a bit unusual, and I think that makes for a GREAT horse person.

Oops, forgot to reply to the crossbreeding question. I did not cross them or breed for that horse. Bought it as a 2 year old. I do not breed horses and leave that to the experts. I myself, would never advise anyone to cross these two breeds, but here she is. She packs like a mule, does dressage, western and english, Great mare. Got the best of both breeds. But, again, would not recommend crossing these two breeds.

FlowerDressage

The SanctityOfHope does not do 'rescue'. they will take in trained horses that can not longer be kept for the owner's personal reasons(i.e. divorce, foreclosure, etc) we then find them new homes that are suited to the horse's skill level and the rider's level. i also do horse rescue on a personal level. Feel free to google me Diane Labant Horse Sherwood Heavenly Acres. you can probably even see photos of the last one. we do not charge for the service or sell the horses, we give them to new homes.
So, it is a personal rescue.
Hope that provides some clarity.

Quoted from one of your "ads":

"As a sideline for raising money we accept a few horses for donation(check with your CPA, but most times you can write off the full value of horse as donation). We rehome them by selling them to a new home"

Is the organization a registered 501(c)3 with the IRS? If not, donations cannot be written off taxes. Just ask the folks at S.W.A.P./Crossed Sabres ;)

I accept rescues at my house.

Sanctity accepts horses and SELLS them.

I am not a 501c3

The 501c3 IS a charity and we raise money.

Does that help answer your question

FlowerDressage

It has to be a registred 501c3 to Be a 5013c, so your answer is yes.

Be careful telling people they can write off thier donations if they can't.

You don't want to get into trouble with the IRS.

Although SWAP seems to get away with it

PS FD...Have you read the "Blacklist" thread?

You should check it out, but make sure you have a comfy chair,a good supply of drinks and tasty snacks...it's long, but worth the read.

It will definately clue you in as to why so many here have strong opinions on this topic.

I hope we can continue to do good things for horses and their friends to make their lives a little better!

as I recall you can deduct full market value for an "personal property" donation only if it is used in/for the organizations tax exempt activities. if sold on you may deduct only the amount realized when sold, the ultimate purchaser gets NO deduction as they have received goods or services. consult your accountant/tax lawyer before becoming involved in any tax benefit ripoff.

Okay, I'm by far no expert, but WHO breeds a Lipizzan to an Appaloosa??? Who does this?? And WHY?? Oh yeah...I forgot...you can cross anything with anything and make a "warmblood"? Right??

Almost hate to admit this, but I've ridden a Lipp/Appy cross! She was a school horse at a lesson barn. Ugly as sin (and I usually like appys), only 14hh, but great temperament, gorgeous leg action, and could jump 4'6" easily.

The barn owner had purchased a Lipp stallion when one of the shows went bankrupt, and he had jumped 3 fences to get to one of her appy school horses! :D

Thanks for the Warm Welcome!
As to the tax write-off, I spoke to our CPA, and I am not going to debate what he said, contact your own CPA & follow his advice like I do with mine. We follow the code & that is all I can tell you. We are advised to tell people to follow their CPAs advice.
I must say, I am picking up our second donation next month, watch for more info!

FlowerDressage- I saw this ad in the Charlotte Craigslist, this isn't one of yours is it? Just curious!

http://charlotte.craigslist.org/bar/455881433.html

QUOTE from ad:

"We are looking for a good, 2 horse, bumper pull trailer with dressing room and escape door. Needs to have a ramp, not a step-up load.

If you have a trailer that you're willing to part with for any of the following:

professional photography services, farm/barn help, farm 'sitting' for your vacation/time away, general maintenance OR anything along these lines, please contact me.

If you have a trailer you are no longer using and you would like to DONATE the trailer to our 10 year old daughter for a tax write-off (she's set up as a non-profit organization), please contact me.

Our daughter owns her own horse and has just joined Pony Club. She aspires to be on the Olympic Equestrian Team. In order to get her there, we need a trailer so we can get out to many events, many clinics and as many trainers as possible.

Thank you for your consideration."

Ok, let me see if I have this straight (Diane , please correct me if not!)
YOu are not a 501-C, but YOU take rescues and give them away at home
YOU are however "SancityOfHope" which IS a 501-C and takes donations and sells them
YOUR DAUGHTER is set up as a 501-C and therefore anything that is given to her is tax-deductible. But personally you just rehome horses for no profit or money.
Have I got it correct?

I've seen commercials for a charity that accepts donated cars and the one doing the donating gets a tax deduction (according to the ad). I doubt the charity uses the cars, I'm sure they sell them. Wouldn't donating a horse to a charity for the charity to sell and make money be the same thing?

from what I understand that's exactly what she's doing.

In other words, not a horse rescue, but accepts horses as donations, and the value of those horses when sold goes to the charity.

You're thinking of Mellwood. We donated a vehicle to them. Yes, the cars are sold in lots and the money goes towards their mission.

In the case of these folks....... let's just say I would be very interested in seeing financials. A person cannot be "set up as a 501(c)(3)". Meaning, you can't create a charity with yourself as the beneficiary and have people give you money which they deduct as a gift and you spend on riding lessons and pay no taxes on.

That's called fraud. A person cannot be a corporation. A corporation by definition, is another "body". It has its own tax id number, files its own taxes, has its own books, operates as its own entity with certain filing requirements, has a Board, has certain accounting requirements, etc. Even nonprofits. They're still a corporation - just a nonprofit one. And, a nonprofit is accountable to its members and donors. It has a fiduciary duty to its members and donors. A nonprofit also has strict accounting requirements.

There are ways in which gifts can be made to worthy individuals so that they can pursue a dream or goal. Foundations, grants, scholarships, and yes, 501(c)(3)'s. But not the way described in that post.

I'm painting this with a rather broad brush - but to be frank, I have seen so much blatant abuse of tax exempt status that I don't even have the energy to go into much detail anymore. Truth is - there's a sucker born every minute. A donor has to be very educated these days to avoid being suckered by "charities". There are millions of them in the US - and many of them are bogus.

There actually was an Appy/Lipp who received some All Breeds awards from USDF (as an App, I believe) a few years ago. I've seen some "baroque" looking Apps (real Apps, not Quarterloosas), so crossing one with a Lipp wouldn't be THAT bad conformation-wise, except...... you don't ever want to cross a color breed with greys. For a while ApHC was going to ban crosses with non-Appaloosa greys and roans, but of course, $$$ spoke first, and some people wanted to breed to that nice grey QH stallion...

my roomie has an Appy that was the result of a cross between a Palomino and a grey. Born dun with a hip blanket. By the time he was 8 he was a nice grey horse with a few faint spots, and now, in his 20s, he's a just another white horse, though you can still see his markings when he's wet. Has all the facial mottling, though, so you'll know he's an App!

I think you got most of it right.
THe 501c3 you can look up on the websight
WWW.SanctityOfHope.Org.
People can make donations in many ways.
Someone people can no longer afford their horses & wish to find a place to donate them, we step in, we accept them, and then rehome them.
Last one was purchased by previous owner for $18,000, I sold it to a 4-H kid for $500.00, that was her budget and she was the best home.
Keep a positive attitude, be a part of the solution, not the problem. Lead, follow or get out of the way. This is our way of making a small difference, what are you doing today? You can do something as fun and wonderful too. We have no special talents, just saw two needs that could work together in an unusual way!

Wow, you even lie about your lies.

The sad thing is, you are trying to justify this scam as charity and then throw it in everyone's faces. How is your daughter trying to qualify for the olympics? Through 4H? Yeah.....

And donating to your daughter???? Are you KIDDING???? Here you say you are trying to help the poor yet you are asking for donations to your DAUGHTER? Isn't that taking from the mouths of the poor? Talk about a hypocrite.

I hope the IRS catches wind of your SCAMS and gets you BIG TIME. All of us honest tax payers have to pick up for tax slackers like you.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Hey everyone, I want a new trailer. I'm not picky at all. But please make it a goose neck, slant load. Oh yeah and living quarters. Oh yeah and please I'd like it to have a blue stripe to match my truck. And I am also in debt so, your donation would be tax deductable as long as I can scam someone into thinking I am a 501c.

MUST BE NICE:rolleyes:
