From Bloodhorse.com-

BC Filly & Mare Sprint contender Oprah Winney could gain a whole new legion of fans by appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" :D

OPRAH WINNEY (Royal Academy), winner of the Barbara Fritchie Breeders' Cup H. (G2) earlier this year, will be featured on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on October 23. Oprah Winfrey will pay tribute to her almost namesake the week of the Breeders' Cup, just three days before the gray filly takes part in the inaugural running of the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on October 26 at Monmouth Park.

Oprah Winney's victory in the Schenectady H. is expected to be included in the segment, as well as footage from Aqueduct, where she is based with trainer Richard Dutrow. Scenes from the 2006 Breeders' Cup are also scheduled to be shown.

The four-year-old lass will enter the six-furlong Filly & Mare Sprint off a two-race win streak, taking the Regret S. and Schenectady in her past two. She's finished off the board only once in her entire 14-race career, that coming as a fourth in the 2006 Ruthless S., and was second in the Vagrancy H. (G2) and third in the Distaff Breeders' Cup H. (G2) this season.

Oprah Winney races for Michael Dubb, Sanford Goldfarb and Bunch of Characters Stable.

Did Oprah have to give permission for the horse to be named Oprah Winney? I know it's not the exact same name, but it's close enough that everyone knows who it refers to.

Did Oprah have to give permission for the horse to be named Oprah Winney?

Nope. Nor would she have to. Close only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades

It would be like naming a horse Count Chuckula - everyone would think of the General Mills cereal which is trademarked, but there is no issue using the twisted name.

There was a Standarbred mare that raced in Chicago way-back-when I was working on the track by the name of Oatfra Winfrey. I think my husband may even have started her a few times as I recall a win picture of her somewhere here in the house.

I saw the broadcast and it was so cute. Oprah was laughing and said she would bet on Winney at the Breeders Cup. Footage of the horse was shot really well, it was a great job. Edgar Prado rides her...

Nope, Prado is not back yet, Gomez rides.

NY Newsday 10-25-07 "Builder's filly Oprah Winney gets on 'Oprah'" (http://weblogs.newsday.com/realestate/blog/2007/10/shes_rich_beautiful_successful.html)

Kids get a kick out of playing with Oprah Winney, the developer said, and seem to visit the gray horse first at the stables because she always has her head out to see what’s going on.

“She’s really kind of like a pet,” Dubb said. “She’s just a really happy horse and she loves what she does. When she’s done racing, I’d like to take her home and keep her in the kitchen with the dog.”

As noted Oprah lost her first two races - she started at Saratoga and then Finger Lakes - then was acquired by the current owners.

I expected her to be...black.
