View Full Version : Any Intrest in a Stallion Show in the USA?
Marydell

I have been discusing this idea with several people in the Southeast and we would like to know if mare owners would be interested in attending a European style Stallion Show held in January, before breeding season?
The stallions would have about a 10 minute allotment of time to be shown along with some of their offspring. We want to include all types of sporthorse stallions, dressage, jumpers/hunters, eventing and ponies for these disciplines.
If you want more information, please contact me at marydellfarms@aol.com
Do not have a real format at this time, just an outline and a tentative date, first saturday after New Year's and location of the Raleigh area.
Thanks!

Fantastic. I'd love to enter our guys, and tell our friends and breeders about the event. Videos can be deceptive, a real life presentation is a much better way to make breeders have an indea about which stallion would go with which mare.

You might want to look at how the All American Sadlebred Futurity does their January stallion preview. They chose a central location where there are many stud farms and reted a bus the ship the people from farm to farm. Each farm could possibly accomodate a few out of town stallions. Ihtik it worked out well to rent the bus and ship the people around and leave th stallions at "home" rather than having to rent a facility and ship all the stallions to the facility. Just a thought. Here is their website http://www.allamericanhorseclassic.com/stallionvisitinfo.htm

Everyone is welcome. Admission is free to the general spectating public.
We will have a list of stallions up next week as soon as we get the new webpage up. There will be some photos and pedigree info as well.
I have contacted most of the larger registries and hope that several will be available to answer registration elegibility questions for mare owners.
We are looking for more stallions and offspring as well as vendors and sponsors. There will be advertising opportunities available as well.
Right now, 16 stallions are slated and we are looking for at least another 15. We can and do want up to 40 stallions and hope to have some entertainment as well. There are pas de duex, quadrille and other ideas available.

At the present time, we have 3 driving stallions, two eventers, three hunter/jumpers, several sport ponies. But you are right, a heavier intrest by the dressage stallions.
I would really like more of the hunter and jumper stallion owners to take an interest and participate.
I have invited the following registries:
AHS
ISR/Old N.A.
AHHA
ATA
GOV
KWPN-NA
IDHA
AWR
AWS
RHPSI
Belgian
SWANA
If you think of any I have missed, please let me know and I will issue an invitation.

This exhibition is NOT just for approved stallions. It is for stallions that are competing or producing offspring for the above listed disciplines.
Of course, I beleive in the warmblood system of inspections and approvals. I beleive it gives mare owners and buyers a clearer idea of potential and quality. But a good horse is a good horse regardless of breed, color, or registry!

I am glad to hear that you wish to include all stallions producing for the listed disciplines "regardless of ... registry," and hope you will follow the suggestions to add the IHF and IJF to your list of organizations contacted as it may help to alleviate possible perceptions of bias in favor of "the warmblood system of inspections...." in which you, personally, believe.
I don't know how far away geographically your invitations extend, but I would be thrilled to have the opportunity to see the likes of Zarr, Minister General, Everest, Aaron's Gold, Popeye K, and other sires of futurity winners in the same arena as registry approved WB's. Where in Raleigh is this? For those of us with a long drive will there be a list of possible close (CHEAP) hotels/motels? OK, what are the 2 (or more) that are within walking distance? Time frame yet? 8-? or 9 - ?. With a couple of the hotels really close I'm wondering if one could fly in, take the shuttle to the closest hotel, walk to the event, walk back to the hotel, take the shuttle back and fly home - all in one day. OK, it's right after Christmas and I'm looking for any and all ways to save money.:yes::D I think it's a terrific idea but I'm trying to think of ways for me - and anyone else wanting to attend - to do it at the most reasonable (read cheap) cost. Or at least, to do it without having to drive or rent a car.

Isn't the James B. Hunt Horse Complex part of the NC State Fairgrounds? If so, I believe it is near the intersection of Blue Ridge Road and Trinity Road and not far from NC State and the football stadium. There should be lots of hotels in the vicinity, although I don't know if any are in walking distance.
Maryanna, it might be helpful if you could post a list of hotels and their distances in miles to to the HHC. Also, do you know if any of the area hotels will offer discounted room rates for this event?

Some are, some aren't; at least one was popular as an H/J sire before being 'satisfactorily' (to some) approved, and got a bit of flak for it. Not caring about approvals myself, I don't invest much time in keeping track of their status . My point is merely that I'd really enjoy seeing the full range both of sport horse stallions and their owners represented, and am very glad that Maryanna is interested in reaching out to all segments of the sport horse industry.

Hotels are being contacted tomorrow in person by me (husband has a business trip there) and I am going to try to get blocks of rooms at the Comfort Inn and Ramada Inn. Horse Show rates are usually around $78. Both are less than an eigth of a mile from door to door. Restaurant "Damons" is right in the Comfort Inn's parking lot. As is a Wendy's. There will be a concession stand open.
Both hotels have airport shuttles and I am going to ask if they can shuttle to the complex if there is rain. (PLEASE let there be rain!!- we are soooo dry!)
I am working on getting a sponsor for a cocktail party for stallion owners and crew. Since admission is free, there is no way to plan for the general spectators. Might work out a Buffet for a nominal charge if the Hunt Horse Complex will allow it.
I will contact IJF and IHF this weekend. Am also contacting the Fresian Asso per a reccomendation. we have since added a driving/riding Fresian.
Keep the ideas coming! We want this to be HUGE!! and FUN!!

We will start at 9 AM. From Frederick, MD it is about a 6 to 7 hour drive.
Airport is 20 minutes away.
Don't know if we will hold a seminar or welcome on Friday night, but the actual Stallion Exhibition will be on Saturday only.
We will have a long lunch break so breeders can go back to the barns to "meet and see in the flesh" all those gorgeous boys.
Just got back from my "hip" class. Looks like I might even be off the walker by then! It will be about 4 and 1/2 weeks post surgery.
So please be patient with us. We are trying our best to get all the information up as quickly as possible.

Maryanna-- thanks so much for your efforts, especially under such trying circumstances with your hip!
I did want to second, however, the suggestion that you contact the USHJA breeders' committe in addition to the IHF and IJF. I wonder, too, if there are comparable organizations among eventers through which you could access the stallions to which people involved in the young event horse program have been breeding.

Thanks DB, but their riders have been away/pregnant for months, so they will not be fit. They could come and show what great "school horses" they are, but that is probably not best for a Stallion Show, where they should look "impressive". ;)

Actually, I am having a friend get me the contact info for the Eventers.
By the way, we will have professional handlers at the event to assist with presentation of offspring in hand.
We also are offering slots for just offspring of a particular stallion that may be too old or not fit. At least two and preferably three offspring to fill a time slot. So if you are missing a rider, but still want to particpate, we can offer you in -hand time slots.
Thanks!

There is plenty of room!!
At the present time, we have 23 stallions and are hoping for 40.
There is a cost for stallion owners. It will include one dry stall, a fullpage( if the program is 8x11) or 2 full pages(if 8x5) approx. Depending on the actual number of particpating stallions, the cost is ""Approx" $300. About the cost of a dressage show entry. One program production estimate is about $9,000 so we are only looking to cover our costs, not make any money.
The website is under construction, up next week. Once up, you will find information about all the stallions signed up, hotels, dining, transportaion, advertising and sponsorship oppertunities.
PLEASE get the word out! We need to put butts in the seats or no matter how good an idea, who will want to spend money to send a stallion if no one is there to watch.
Also, keep sending me contacts and ideas.I will do my best to make this a fun event with lots of information.

To help fill those seats: contact Pony Clubs, NC Horse Council, NC Horse News, area veterinarians (Fernando Cardenas even has some stallions-- and is probably not alone), NCDCTA, NCState -- there are so many places where it seems flyers and/or articles on a website and/or newspaper could attract people! I'll talk to my trainer and see if he has other ideas-- I already know that at least one of his clients has a stallion I'd love to see out in public and next to others.

My hope is that stallion show will provide a great opportunity to see representatives of the many different kinds of stallions capable of being and producing quality Sport Horses.
Request for Equine Reproduction: discussion of what medications, supplements, etc., are/are not safe for breeding stock. E.g.: I recently asked my vet about continuing to give my pregnant mare Conquer considering that (a) she had a late term abortion last year soon after her 3rd rhino shot, and (b) Conquer has not been tested on pregnant mares, so the label has to say "not proven to be safe...." My vets' response was that none of our basic vaccines have been tested for that kind of safety either, but we use them anyway because of the risks posed by the diseases.
So there we are: crap shoot re: medications and supplements joins crap shoot of breeding. Sure would appreciate any light that could be shed on the subject.

One thing I know is an appy stallion would be welcomed with open arms. When I got off the phone with Maryanna the other day she has had a WIDE range of stallions from ponies to Friesians, not just Warmbloods, signed up for the stallion show. The goal of the show is to show mare owners what's out there. Just about every discipline is represented as well and really stellar handlers will be there.
Give her a call or an email! You never know until you try!

Maryanna, we are really looking forward seeing all of the other stallions in the flesh and bringing our own EDISON! I think it is a great idea and appreciate your hard work! It is really something people should want to see if they are serious about breeding.
We are looking forward to the guest speakers as well.
I know it will be a job well done with you handling it. Thanks in advance for all of your efforts, as well as Aaron at Pepperwood Farm!:)

Fingers crossed for good weather!!! (I got stuck with horses on 95 in a blizzard a few years ago, hence the reason I'm staying home with the boys! One trip like that was enough!) :uhoh:

Would love to come, but Counterclaim is in his first show that weekend. He's been training for it all fall and we need to continue on that path........of course, I'll be with him so that leaves out Claim to Fame too...........perhaps next year. It sounds like a great event (although it's about a ten hour DRIVE from Tallahassee, ugh!)

Maryanna -
Regrettably, my boys and I will not be able to attend, but my thoughts will be with you and the other stallion owners who will use the outstanding opportunity to present their stallions and offspring to a wide audience.
Thank you for putting so much of your time and talent into putting this exhibition together, just as you have done over the years with your other project.

Maryanna,
Please post this on the NC Horse News Event Calendar (http://forum.nchorsenews.com/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=24) so that "local folks" who may not frequent COTH will know about it and can plan to attend. (Daydream Believer/Cayuse Gold's "mom" is a moderator there---maybe she'll add it to the calendar if you don't get around to it?)
I actually DON'T have to work that weekend (yay!) so I'll have time to & plan on coming out and "spectating" and oogling/oooh-la-la-ing over all the boys. :) Props to you for organizing this event!

I'm doing the same thing here in the Weddington/Waxhaw area. I believe I've convinced several gal friends (all mare owners... one with a pony already bred to Sweet Rock Solid) that a road trip to Raleigh is in order. What fun! Thanks so much, Maryanna!

Congrats on a GREAT program and for pulling it all together.
May I just give a wee bit of input? The web site needs to clarify "approved/licenced for breeding in xxx registries" or "foals may be registered with these registries: xxx" as opposed to "breed". Take Staccato for instance... listed as Dutch on the opening page, but "breed registry" on his personal page lists current RPSI and ISR. I'm assuming that he is a NA or KWPN registered Dutch stallion that is approved for breeding currently with the RPSI, and with the ISR, but not for the Dutch.
I know it's hard for newbies to make heads or tails of this stuff. Hypothetically... How can a Dutch horse with Hanoverian bloodlines only be approved for Oldenburg babies? Try explaining that one to your mother-in-law.

Dec. 30, 2007, 08:11 PM
ONLY 5 MORE DAYS !!
We are adding two more stallions, both Knabstruppers, one of which is approved by the RPSI.
Also, Eurofoal, although not every stallion has the information in the manner I would like, and how you suggested, if you go to the stallion page, look under the stallion's name, there is the registry of birth. Then if you click on his name or picture, you go to a full page with more photos, owner comments and Registry information that the stallion is activated for. We have to go with what the owner supplies to us for what we put on the web and in the program.
I will have an order of go by Tuesday and hopefully we can get it up by Wednesday.
Please come out and see these wonderful stallions and meet the owners.

I have not done this alone. Aaron Maye and his wife Merideth have been my legs in Raleigh.
Crystal has done a fantastic job with the website. Linda Symborski donated her time to design the program which I think you will all like. CristanTrainor and Cyndi DeBracy for supporting this in the eventing world and on the BBs. Eliza Sydnor for her unwavering encouragement and Stacy for her enthusiasum.
But most of all--My HUSBAND, Wendell!! After having the surgery 4 weeks ago, he has had to help dress me each day, help to set up the shower, run around picking up programs and giving up Sunday football games( a HUGE sacrifice for all of those who know him!) Could not have done this without everyone's help and encouragement.
Have to say, I think this event is something mare owners and breeders alike have been hungry for for a while if the response in emails and BBs is any indication. I also hope that as a group, we can discuss getting the NGB to listen to us and respect us as the breeders of future top quality performance horses right here in the USA!
I hope to see all of you who can make it. Please find me(either with a cane or a walker) and say HI.

The arena can be freezing cold or blistering hot depending on where you sit and whether they have the ceiling "toasters" going. The forecast for Raleigh tomorrow isn't too bad, but I'd bring layers if you're cold natured and perhaps a blanket just in case.
