I would love some delicious ideas for drinks to put in my flask.
I like things that are a little on the sweet side.
Any special concoctions out there?
Thanks!

Weather dependant:
Today - Virginia, 8 am meet, nippy early but warming - 1/3 port (the cheap sweet stuff), 2/3rds water.
Last Saturday - 90 degrees in the shade - ice water
Cold weather - 4/5ths port, 1/5 Jack Daniels.
Mmmmm.

Bourbon and Peach Schnapps is always good. The colder it is, the more Bourbon you use.
I got some Blackberry Schapps that I'm enjoying - lightly sweet but with bite that helps clear the pipes on these dusty hunting days.

Moonshine..............and you can use it as a leg rubdown or brace after the meet!! Watch it on the cuts tho'....it's gotta sting!:lol:
Baileys Irish Cream if you really have a sweet tooth.
Southern Comfort if you're Virginian and southern by the grace of god!!
Virginia Gentleman if you hunt with Fairfax!
Any fruity brandy or even fruity dregs!! :D
In this weather; I'm a thinkin' maybe Mojito's would be right!! Nope, on second thought....save that for the car followers to drink...they can really work up a thirst ya know!

Percy Special:
Its a traditional hunting drink, the invention of the 10th Duke of Northumberland and it's 50:50 malt whiskey and cherry brandy.
The first one slips down and so does the 2nd and 3rd and then you're at serious risk of being totally p***ed and falling down or off your horse!
My 2nd choice is port:
And absolutely GOT to be a classic vintage Taylor's Tawny Port
And I'm also VERY partial to whiskey mac:
But that's not so sweet. More warming and the best thing ever on a cold winter's day or if you're suffering from cold and can't breathe. It totally blows out the cobwebs! Its 3:1 malt whiskey and Stones Green Ginger Wine.

Ginger wine? I wonder if I can order that at the ABC store. Same thing with cherry brandy - though I think I've seen that for sale there.
(we're weird in the US - have to go to a state run store to buy liquor. Never made sense to me)
That sounds a bit like something I used to drink when I lived in Germany (near Bremen). Cold and damp year around.
I have been meaning to stock up for the winter - this is a timely thread.
I have been looking for a liquor called Exotica but have never been able to find it in the US. It's a local liquor made in Bremen (or used to be) made out of kiwifruit and other fruits like strawberry.
It was a dangerous drink - went down like fruit juice. Would be wonderful to have out hunting.

Applejack
Hard cider
if you can't find that pour clear liquor (vodka, moonshine, etc.) into some real fresh cider in the proportion you prefer. Gotta have apples in fall and winter. It is like a religion.
Beer or mead would be great but you have to have a volunteer with a pitstop for that. Too foamy for galloping!

Hey Swan, what's all this America-bashing? I have travelled all over the world and lived abroad and think the U.S. is pretty swell. Bashing your own country always comes accross as quite unsophisticated to the more jaded ;).
Not all states have state run liquor stores, heck, in Michigan you can buy liquor at the grocery store on Sundays. Shocked us southern visitors.

J Swan lives, as I do, in a Commonweath, rather than a "State".
It is our good fortune being amongst the first thirteen .
We suffer the LCB and State Stores, prices are high, and selection is small. Yet, I can go to Maryland or West Virgina and find fine wines and spirts in a Krogers, at far better prices, but you have to drink it there, as it is illegal to transport is across State lines. So never do that

That may be true, but US Airways didn't have any problem allowing us to pack good 'ole Kentucky bourbon in our luggage on our return trip from Rolex. We even ask them IF it was allowable, and then we asked just how many bottles we could bring! They basically told us that we could pack as much as we wanted in our suitcases!!! Now, honestly, these were some younger employees who probably just hadn't learned all of the ropes yet.

When I was in Normandy this year, I picked up a fifth of Calvados, which is apple brandy. It's 84 proof, and can put hair on your chest and strip paint from furniture. It might wind up in my flask this winter, but I'll be stingy about sharing it. It's not like I can just fly over to France again to get another bottle, and I doubt I'd find it here!
So far it's been to hot to carry a flask; it was 82 today. That cold Pumpkin Spice Ale sure tasted good once I got home!

Not bashing - merely an observation!!! I'm cynical and jaded - I freely admit!
I think the ABC store may be a Southern thing. Like blue laws and moonshine. You can order some things - but as far as selection they are usually smaller than a 7-11.
To prove my claim that I can find anything on the Internet, here is the history of the ABC in Virginia:
http://www.abc.state.va.us/admin/hist1.htm
Tell your friends you saw it here first!
It appears to be a very outdated Board - but like all institutions - difficult if not impossible to abolish.
I have the perfect flask - it's a 4oz flask that fits in my Melton - I got it from Ashland Bassets.

State-run liquor stores are not necessariy a Southern thing, or a Commonwealth thing. I live in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, which is somewhat schizoprenic about whether it's Southern or Midwestern. Our liquor stores are not run by the Commonwealth, but they are regulated with a bizarre set of laws that vary from county to county. On the other hand, when I went to school in Pennsylvania, which I believe is neither Southern nor a Commonwealth, liquor was sold in state stores.
Back to the original question: my small flask carries Bourbon (currently Rip van Winkle 10 year old 107 proof). My saddle flask carries Rock'n'rye, the unquestionable favorite of foxhunters in these parts who do not prefer straight Bourbon. I had some left over at the end of last season, so I took it to Rolex where it was a great hit with eventing fans from around the country. The recipe is subject to personalization (and some people think it's a family secret),
But you basically start with a fifth of Wild Turkey 101 rye whiskey, and add 4 cups orange juice, 2 cups rock candy, 1 cup lemon juice. Then you get bold and experiment. I add about 1/4 cup dark rum to mine. I know somebody who replaces some of the orange juice with grapefuit juice.

It's easy to make your own Ginger Wine if you're at all creative - Google can help you find various recipes.
There are a few different producers of the readymade stuff, Stone's, as Thomas mentioned, and Crabbie's: Stone's, and I see now also Hutchison's (yum) are both available in Canada at the LCBO.....

If you like sweet, fruity, AND warming...try a mixture with any of the "99" schnapps (99 Proof).
99 Berries
99 Bananas
99 Oranges
99 Cherries
99 Apples
My favorite of the above for flasks is 99 Bananas and Baileys. As is 99 Apples or 99 Berries with Brandy. 99 Bananas and 99 Cherries is also good with any Chocolate liqueur.
Be careful what you mix with Bailey's in your flask...sometimes the results can get quite "interesting" after it has been sitting for a bit of time while hunting. Trust me, been there, done that, don't wanna do that again!

YES!!!!!! Also nice with raisins, blanched almonds, and orange peel (though those are a bit chunky for a flask--a strainer would be helpful ).
1.5 litre bottle of inexpensive dry red wine
1.5 litre bottle of inexpensive American port
1 bottle of inexpensive brandy or aquavit
10 inches of stick cinnamon
1 Tablespoon cardamom seeds
2 dozen whole cloves
Peel of one orange
1/2 cup raisins
1 cup blanched almonds
2 cups sugar
Garnish with the peel of another orange

I used to drink something very similar in Germany. Warm. It was popular in the fall and winter, as the wind off the North Sea would chill you to the bone!
You know - that might make a lovely tailgate drink. Nice and warm You could just make it in a pot beforehand and then heat it up with a camp stove.
I'll have to keep that recipe!

Glogg (or Grog) is Swedish, and I live in a community with strong Swedish roots. There are several older bakeries that still sell the spices. The spices are raisens, cardamon seeds, almonds, orange peel, cinnamon, cloves and probably a couple of other things. The challenge is getting good grain alcohol that won't flavor the wine, so that is where connections to Moonshiners comes in handy.
I start brewing my Glogg in November, and I can't decorate for Christmas without a pot going on the stove. My husband usually makes me open a wondow so I don't get tooo goofy from the fumes. It also comes in handy after shoveling snow, or attempting to spread manure in near blizzard conditions!

While you can purchase booze 24-7 here in sin city IL (proud to boast the vacation place of Al Capone and his buddies...Mineola Resort), they do have a better variety at the ABC than the local grocery (although Liquor Barn in Lexington, KY is the best!!!!!)
However, that is one of the good things about this place...you can stop at the Jewel at 5am on your way to the hunt to buy something to get you going for the hunt (gas and liquor!)...and the parking is very horse trailer friendly!

Some other things that come to mind:
Bourbon mixed with cream
Sour Apfelkorn -- which I have only ever found in Germany or with people who have the connections to import it. I'd recommend it for warm weather.
You can also take vodka and your favorite fruits (I've tried it with Blueberries, Strawberries and Bananas) and let the fruits sit in the vodka for three days. Supposedly you should switch the Bananas out every day. Tastes a bit like a smoothie but thinner and kicks you on your butt.
