I did my LD this weekend. I had planned to foam easy boots on, but got really busy on Thursday and Friday morning before leaving and just didnt get around to it. But now I'm glad I didnt! I used the Renegades on the front and Epics with the gaiters very loosely fastened on the back. I was so nervous about them falling off and kept checking every few minutes. Luckily I had someone ride behind me the whole way so I didnt have to keep stopping to check the backs. Anyhow, it went great. It was a fairly tough LD, with sand, climbing, and rocks and the boots stayed on no problems at all. No rubbing with the Epics either.

I got to meet the guy who makes the Renegades, got some adjustments done on mine, and bought another pair! He told me that he is still not up to full production speed yet so is not selling them en masse to the public. So ya'll are gonna have to wait :) They really are very, very nice boots and working so well for my mare. The winner of the 50 was wearing them too and quite a few others.

congrats!

and i'm so envious about the renegades...still waiting for my pair:(

so no rubs from either boots? did you use any rub protection such as vet wrap for the ez boots or did you just leave the gaiters loose?

and btw, what type of terrain were you riding on?

I had no rubs at all. I left the easy boot gaiters very loose. I dont think the Renegades have much of a possibility of rubbing due to their design. The terrain I rode on was about 8 miles of sand, then climbing including many miles of rocks and then some hard road. There was some sand in all of the boots and it was kind of mushed into my mare's coronet area mixed with some sweat and looked kind of cakey and icky when I took them off, but when I brushed it off, there was no irritation at all. Maybe for 50s, I will take them off at the vet checks and clean the area up. Now that I have 4 Renegades I think I will stick to them being they are so much easier to put on and take off. So I am happy with the boots, keeping my fingers crossed for the future :)

The only terrain that I dont have here is water crossings and mud.

Can you post a picture of them so we know what to look forward to?

Congratulations!! It sounds like you had a great ride.

Yeah, please post a picture. I'm so aggravated with the boot situation for my horse that I was up half the night trying to figure out a design that would work for him. It would be so cool if there was a boot out there that was easy to adjust based on different hoof shapes.

While I was at the farrier supply store, the lady there was so skeptical of my ideas that I forgot to purchase the glue I need. If all farriers were like that one, we'd never have new products on the market for horse's hooves. Her solution to everything is to nail a shoe on. I was trying to explain to her that a nailed-on shoe is not a good option for my horse, and then she tried to "diagnose" what his problem is. She was calling pedal osteitis "road founder." At that point, I gave up talking to her. BTW, my horse is not sore. I'm just looking for ways to keep him sound on a distance ride without nailing a shoe to his foot. Boots are problematic because his feet are so round, and only the Old Macs seem to be designed for that kind of foot. They are not recommended for long distance riding.

Okay, sorry for the whine. I'm done. :D I'm dying to see the renegades--maybe I'll stop trying to design my own boot!

the website is www.renegadehoofboots.com There are lots of pics but no contact info- on purpose.

matry, I think its pretty cool you are trying to design something on your own, because I think thats basically what the Renegade guy did.

I like that design! It's not something I would have thought to do, but it makes sense. I wonder if they fit feet that are round instead of oblong? I guess I'll just have to wait to find out. I'd love to become a distributer whether or not they fit my horse.

I'm going to keep an eye out for those boots. Thanks for the link!

Does anyone know how much are the Renegades going to cost?

i think they run about $160 per pair. and i think they're only available as a pair, not individually.

i'm so looking forward to trying them on.

my non-horsey SO emailed me yesterday saying that he thinks he should design a hoof boot (he was with me in Rhode Island and witnessed the foaming and refoming and gaiters, etc.) maybe you and he can do something together? he has the technical abilities and you have the knowledge of a horse anatomy;)

they look like they drain well. also, the sole looks like it should have some grip.
i've read some posts on the yahoo barefoot endurance group from people who have been using them successfully. so far all positive feedback.

I've been trying to see what they look like in person, or however a boot presents itself.

My horse is in Hoof Wings right now, which I like, but want perfection, of course! www.hoofwings.com

I went to the website, but didn't get much information. Do you have a good place to look that you'd share?

Thanks.

There really is not much info. on the Renegades, the maker wants it that way for now. He is just selling them to trimmers that he knows for distribution to their clients.
I paid $180 a pair for mine. I think different trimmers have different markups.

Awww, that is too bad that I cannot ask my farrier to get in touch with renegadehoofbeat for boots.

EBO, how is that your boots from hoofwings are not perfect? From what I saw on www, it looks good. Perhaps, it might fit my QH's feet better than Boa Boots.

It is such a HUGE struggle to fit Boa boots on my QH's feet which is really frustrating. I need to find better boot so I can ride him.
