I'm pretty swamped right now, but really want to do this. This was my original thought from last year, which boomeranged, and in doing so I ended up not being able to do anything productive.

So this one stays right where it is: on COTH, for those 501(c)3 (or equivalent in other countries) rescues that post on COTH.

I've been kicking around how to do this, and would appreciate any input. This is a one way Secret Santa: I will match "donors" with Rescues in an arbitrary fashion (I will destink my helmets and put names of rescues in one and donors in the other, close my eyes, grab, and pair).

It does not need to be much, since I know times are tight all over. It could be as simple as some new lead ropes, a coupon to Tractor Supply for a bag of feed, some homemade horse treats.

here's where I need input, and I will update with information as we put it together:

(1) The rescues must be 501(c)3 or equivalent, as per COTH BB rules.

(2) The rescues can send me mailing info, mission, items they could use. This could also include items to thank a particularly hard working volunteer - think what pleasure it would bring to someone who worked so hard to know that a complete stranger valued his/her efforts that much! Or, it could be something like your time - the offer to write thank you notes, an offer of photography if you are close by, an offer to make up a flyer (anyone with computer skills is valued highly these days!).

(3) Potential donors e mail me with their interest. I can either match up rescues to donors, or just send the list of rescues and info to every potential donor. The only caveat is this: I would like each rescue to get something. That's only fair. I also don't mind matching up a TB lover with a TB rescue, if requested, or a mule lover with a rescue that fosters mules, or a rescue in your area - whatever.

I just would like the rescues that post here on COTH to get a little extra something. Even treats. After I sent a dribble to Lori of Sunkissed Acres, I was making horse treats (my stud muffin ripoffs) and made extra to send to her "kids," because I knew so many were quite old and couldn't eat hard treats - and it's costly enough to keep them in forage and etc, who can afford treats? And Lori said the kids loved them. So - even something this small is still something.

It's better to e mail me, as it's easier for me to cut and paste that way:

neckamws at slu dot edu

And again, feedback much appreciated!

I'll send the stud muffin recipe - please remind me!!! I go zonal frequently these days.

And Lori T (and others in the same boat, ahem FatPalimino) I'll accept last minute ones if I can - I'll try and hold out for as long as possible so we can include as many rescues as possible.

Just e mail me!

Awwww, thank you for being so awesome!

I think it is a wonderful idea and I'm sure I can speak for every rescue on COTH when I say that even just thinking of the rescue horses during the holiday times makes us all feel great for them. ;)

Every horse's stall gets decorated for the holidays here and they each get their own little stockings stuffed with peppermints and carrots. And yes, the kids and I all go up around midnight (you've all heard the story about the barn at midnight on Christmas Eve, right?) and stuff them for the horses. It's a big event here, lol.

BTW, for Lori & FatPalomino - When we originally filed and were still pending, according to the IRS rules, any organization that has filed for 501 status may operate as a 501 until the determination is made as long as those donating know that you're pending and depending on the final ruling, the donation may or may not be tax-deductible. It takes a long time - we filed in April of 06 and were just granted our 501(c)(3) status last month, but look into that if you haven't already.

Thanks again for thinking of the rescue kids! :D

I just stumbled upon this thread. Of course I LOVE this concept.

I spoke with the IRS agent assigned to our case last week.He told me that Colorado Thoroughbred Rescue will be officially 501c3 within a month! As we already knew, all donations made from the time of incorporation (11/06) will be fully tax-deductible. There were a few minor details I needed to finish (forgot some signatures in the 100+ pages I sent in!). All necessary documents have been filed. All we have to do is wait.

Our wish list doesn't consist entirely of monetary related items. For example, we NEED well organized volunteers in many aspects.

I assume we can compile an updated, thorough list of ways to help and place them on our website.

Any suggestions??

Yes, our corporate lawyer as well told us we could issue reciepts while we were pending as long as people realized we were pending. All was back dated to the day of incorporation.

It will be so nice to have another couple of rescues onboard.

Sign up!! I'm sure all of us can at least pitch in a bit to help the rescues. An idea for college students - if your on your schools eq team/club, bring up the idea at a meeting. Maybe you can even do small fund raisers at horse shows your school hosts, such as sending some proceeds from the concessions to a rescue. I'm going to bring it up at our next meeting.

This may be a good way to practice what you preach, and demonstrate to your horses that giving is a good thing. Sure I tell Ted all the time, "You know, there are horses out their who don't have moms to give them peeps or neccos," or, "There are horses out there who don't have moms that will scritch them where it itches." He was lucky enough to come off the track and into a forever home.

Maybe this way he will use his internet powers for Good. Of course, I suppose this means I'll have to up his allowance.

Well now, the fire and horse situation in Cal has really gotten serious now. There will be a ton of help needed.

Wouldnt it be nice if every person who signed up for SS for themselves, sent just one item from there gift box to a rescue. Or, it each person who signed up for SS took 5 dollars of the initial value, say a $50. box, take 4 of it leaving $45 for exchanging gifts and 5 to Rescue SS.

Nope, not greedy, just thinking of how many more signed up for SS for themselves when the horses are what this board is all about.

Good idea huh.

After reading the other secret santa thread, I think I have a better idea what this is about (um, I'm slow that way),

Do we get to have elf alters and harass (er chat with..) our rescues?? I'm thinking yes

Sounds like fun!

What a great idea!

DressageGeek "Ribbon Ho"
Nov. 3, 2007, 09:50 AM
Whatever you guys want to do - is up to you! Make it as fun as possible - and if this includes bad poetry, so be it!

I am going to be matching up donors and rescues - I think we will have THREE donors per rescue - so you will get to virtually meet your donor "herd" and you can work as a team, or not, as you prefer. Since some donors asked to be matched up geographically, I have to get out mapquest or similar to make sure I'm placing things in the correct region.

Ted is tapping his hoof impatiently. He is mad that I finally am an elf for someone, and I also have an elf, and he has no one.

And - for whichever donors get matched up with Ted - please let me know if he is on the computer late at night when he is supposed to be studying!!!!

DressageGeek "Ribbon Ho"
Nov. 4, 2007, 09:47 AM
We have 12 rescues...and more donors...I am trying to organize things now. Of course, if any last minute donors want to sneak in on the fun....!

DressageGeek "Ribbon Ho"
Nov. 4, 2007, 02:23 PM
As of last count...we have 32 donors, including Ted, who appears to be the only horse who is donating. So I hope that adds to his horsey kharma!

But it's not like he gets a great allowance. And he's not a lwayer - yet.

We have 12 rescues, so we are a little shy of of 3 Secret Santas per rescue.

I am hoping someone, or their horse(s) will step up to the plate so I don't have to come up empty...

Once I get all the info - the Official Matchups will occure, and the Donors will be sent their Rescue Info and Fellow Donors' COTH names.

I can't wait to see all the bad poetry that will come out of this one!

Quin
Nov. 4, 2007, 02:55 PM
Since our family is doing some extra horsey things now (board, extra lessons, the GAS to get there every day!!!) I was not going to participate in any of the festivities myself this year, like any of the Secret Santas, in the name of economy. But if you are short, you can add me in for a rescue. I'll e-mail you, but we know from experience that your e-mail server does not seem to like my e-mail address, or something, so please add me to your list based on this post.

aha the kids here at Sunkissed are ready to join the fun. Not only will they have SS's they are participating. they know they have enough warm clothes to be able to at least send some to another rescue family.

Can I please point out to the SS's for rescue. The items not need to be new. Just look around your tack room, the feed room, etc. etc. You probably have a ton of items you never use but a rescue will. Second hand works well for us.

I donated this year $200.00 to one of the local dressage non profit organization and they didn't mention my business in the sponsors and still didn't respond to my email(s) about giving me a tax letter (as promised). Needless to say that I learned my lesson now of not assuming that I will get a tax letter or that they will remember to mention me as donor. I'll never donate to them again.

The good part is that they freed my donation budget for many other non profits that are looking for donations.

Thing 2 from team 7 signing in to report.
I was assigned to you as my final resort.

This is my last chance to outshine
Those rotten elf brothers and sisters of mine.

The sleigh? I'm afraid to say I'm to blame.:o
But that little old elf, I couldn't have maimed.

Santa's stack of bad mags I did burn.
I wouldn't have done it had I gotten my turn!

The reindeer I gave the rye whiskey to
Have just come around and agreed not to sue.

So you see I better step up on my cheer
And make this a Christmas to remember for years.

So dear Cowgirljenn, if you're reading this rhyme
Let me know what your rescue really needs at this time.

When I'm not acting as Santa's burdend little beast,
I'm really quite local(just a bit to the East).

You have foster families in my neck of the woods.
If you'd like, I could drop them a whole bunch of goods.

If you'd like it to be a bit more centralized,
I can ship it on out on the new sleigh that flies.

(The old one you see has some stories to tell,
After I took it one night to raise Holy H$ll!)

Please let me know if there is one glowing steed,
Who stands out above and has a great need.

Or if a box full of "stuff" should you want,
So I can begin the great shopping hunt.

Please give your wants in order of need.
Is it leads then wormer? Or wormer then leads?

All except for the trailer on that list you dear person.
I sure can't swing that while Santa's still cursin'.

So come on team 7! Let's kick some elf rump!
And make those other teams smell like a skunk!

Woo hoo - lots of bad poetry with which to harrass the rescues!

For those of you on the teams: I PM'd everybody jointly - if you are not certain who your team members are, PM me and I will send the info.

How do we play? However you want. It would be best to at least check in with your team members so that everybody doesn't send 10 tubes of dewormer, but you may choose to coordinate so your offerings arrive together, or not - your call. You may choose to create a team "alter" or not - your call. Feel free to PM me and/or other members of your team. We are an international SS as well, since we have a Canadian Rescue on board.

Make this as much fun as you want - ball's in your court.

If you specifically want a receipt, just let the rescue know.

And could somebody on Elf Team 8 please help Ted create an alter? I think we could have joint alters if you send your team emembers the name and password, which, of course, Erin can remove at the end of the season.

C'mon, Elf Team 8 - kick some butt!!! (Hey - I have to root for my own horse, right?)

Come Christmas morning gathered round the tree,
Ten sweet wonderful ponies your eyes will see.
Amish tractors, a Walker, & a halfinger mare,
a Standardbred, a sportpony, and a mini are there.

Us horses feel like orphans without a "mom" or "dad",
And we'd be grateful for anything we had.
Grooming, tack, blankets, or whatever you spare,
Will make us smile because we know someone cares.

Or something for the workers toiling behind the scene,
so many volunteers : helping equines is routine!
Plus matryoshka the farrier, Rachel C, and the vet.
But no gift for MayS; she causes COTHboard trainwrecks.

Thanks in advance for caring bout us,
This outpouring of love is making us blush.
I better end here before this poem gets worse,

As far as one glowing steed - hold off a week or two, we may have one - a very, very sad and difficult story. *sigh* We have a mare who is in foal - who should never have been bred (thanks to a rupture tendon in her abdomen). If we abort her, we've been told we could lose her. If she carries the foal to term, we have been told she'll die. We're talking to specialists - to see if a c-section could save both lives and how much that would cost. A donation to Miss Snickers might be the way to go - to save two lives at once. Aw. I am no good at the awful poetry... and too frazzled today to think so excuse my unlyrical responses.

Miss Snickers is awaiting a trip to Texas so she can visit the good vets at A&M. We have a vet lined up for her to stay with as she approaches foaling, and we'll all be praying she can make it. It is so upsetting to see this mare with the ruptured public tendon forced to carry a foal who may kill her. *sigh* (She came to us this way).

I'm simply speechless! I love the poetry!

We could always use more feed, which can be called directly into our feed store, where there is an account set up (Ranch Way Feed, P.O. Box 2026, 416 Linden Street, Fort Collins,, Co 80524, 1-800-333-7929, (970) 482-1662, Fax: (970) 482-6963).

Wormers, wormers wormers! Other equine related supplies most needed are bell boots (prefer pull on, med./large/XL), oral antihistamines, and hay feeders (ones that slide over fence rails or can stand free in a paddock) .

We could always use volunteers that can help write grants, design new programs, look over applications, etc...

One of our biggest needs is a run-in shelter (currently hoping to obtain a discount from www.toteashedinc.com) and hay. We have enough funds to fill our barn with hay, but unfortunately, that won't get us through the winter. We always need more.

Thank you!

Naw - I keep saying, "Thank YOU!!"

Ted is just happy because he is the only horse on an elf team, and he thinks that makes him special. Not really. Given his allowance, he can't cough up much, and he thinks being generous means going to ShopNSave to buy peeps, and saying, "One box for the rescue. Three boxes for ME. Another box for the rescue. Five boxes for me!!"

Bonnie - try haiku!
It's much easier than rhyming.
Just 5-7-5.

I was an elf too!
Horse Treat Secret Santa, and this.
Mom made me do it.

I wanted her to
Bake some horse treats for my rescue.
She ran out of time.

And now I feel bad.
I don't get much for allowance
I had to save up.

I am sorry, but
I couldn't buy the peep machine.
I am desolate.

Tell Mom what to do
Buy many bags of store treats
Pass off as your own

This comes from past times
Potluck at work short notice
No cooking just shop

Who needs a Peep Machine
Big Lots will have peeps on sale
Buy many one buck.

Okay Ted, this is harder, but I don't feel nearly as sickly. Pass the Soduko on the left hand side.

Thank you all who participated - especially this year, when things are so tough. I was overwhelmed that several impecunious students, or others hit by financial woes, offered to pitch in.

These people proved that it doesn't need to be much, that the small things add up. I want to thank each and every one of you - we had three or four people per elf team - for some rescues, it may be the first donation in a long time, things are that tough.

And powers that be willing, I would be delighted to organize this again next year, and would appreciate any feedback on a way we can make it better. I had hoped to solicit some outside generosity (from the big tack stores) and just wasn't able to get it organized in time, but next year we'll at least have a track record.

Thank you. Every post on this thread made me beam.

And Ted says, he doesn't want to be the only horse next time. While he does claim this shows the ultimate superiority of OTTBs, he realizes that every breed - even Gypsy Vanners, even minis and donks! - can help out their less fortunate equine friends.

These people proved that it doesn't need to be much, that the small things add up.

That is what keeps us alive. Sure big donors are nice, but it is the caring folks who send little bits, time after time after time, that allow us to continue to help the horses in need who come to us.

On behalf of our newest horse, a mare so skinny we don't know how she's still alive (but she's feisty and quite likely will make it), and all our other charges, a tremendous:

:)THANK YOU!!!:)

To let us help others.
To bring them gifts and Christmas cheer,
Letting them know we care.

A little here, a little more there,
And even Peeps from Ted!
And each and every rescue was told
How important they are here.

News from a rescue. I received a box today from Valley Vet. I assume it is from my Rescue SS and believe me, it was chalk full of goodies. The horses favorite in there was the Mrs. Pastures cookies. I cant afford such things although we splurge on Dumor's and Mrs. Pastures are truly there favorites. We got lots of wormer, vet wrap, cotton bandaging, corona shampoo, microtech shampoo and tons of snaps. Ok, I suspect DG told someone just how many of those we go through LOL. It was a fantastic box and will make a huge difference to the kids. I love microtech and corona shampoo. You guys certainly were generous. And oh yes, Rudy the basket hound, he loves hot pink vet wrap. He spent months in it while his foot was healing LOL.

Bless you guys. I am so grateful and Katie says, kisses for the cookies, since she insists on the mostest.

Ted gets a small allowance, in the hopes of teaching him fiscal responsibility. This basically allows him to buy chocolate for our trainer and farrier. In return, I buy his peeps. But I had to oversee the buying. He wanted them to have a peep making machine, and I didn't think that would be quite as useful as halters and lead ropes, but we did agree on the treats.

Ted must be a very good boy to get an allowance! Maybe if Buffy stops her latest display of enthusiasm by coming out of the pasture either airborne or on her hind legs, I will consider it.
