It's that time of year folks!! One more month and Suffolk Downs will be closing it's gates for the winter.... there are TONS of super nice horses on the CANTER site, and the yearly showcase is coming right up! Here are the most needy horses (as of 10/5) .... someone must have room in their barn and heart to take in one (or two.. or three!)

Applied Economics: (this mare has been on here for ages!! She looks nice.. anyone??)

http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/AppliedEconomics2006.jpg
http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Applied%20Economics.jpg

I NEED A NEW HOME ASAP!
BACK IN THE LISTINGS! T05-914-10. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Gray, 15.3 hands, 13 years old
"Applied Economics" is a beautiful mare with a magnificent, Arabian-type profile and expression. This silver sweetheart is a joy to work with - doesn't do a thing wrong. Proven broodmare; her first foal was born last year (see the adorable photo below) and is a beauty! Applied Economics was an excellent athlete, retiring sound after an almost unheard-of 101 starts. She is regally bred (with stars like In Reality and Key to the Mint close up) and will add substantial quality to any broodmare program. She's also in great shape and young enough to make a real show horse - has been started under saddle and is doing great! Can be seen on the farm south of Boston. PRICE REDUCED: $1,000 OBO - all reasonable offers considered - ABSOLUTELY MUST SELL, too many horses. Owner will also consider a lease for breeding purposes. Contact Kathy Manning at 508-857-2526 or e-mail kates_pony@msn.com

My Darling Billie (I just LOVE this mare's look!! Good thing my barn is kinda full...):

http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/MyDarlingBillie.jpg

T07-2318-08. TRAINER-OWNED FILLY, Liver chestnut with chrome, 16.1 hands, 3 years old
What a stunning girl "My Darling Billie" is! Splendid coloring with a big white blaze, a statuesque frame and a noble countenance - she is a serious prospect for discriminating sporthorse breeders. Billie has two old bows up front, but they are set and cold. With a sweet expression and a gentle nature (she quietly tucked her head over our shoulders during her photo session), Billie is looking for a new life off the track - one she richly deserves. Price: $1,500 negotiable. Call Mark Bliss, 352-207-4492.

Hunting Luck (he just looks like he wants to climb into your pocket :)):

http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/HuntingLuck.jpg.jpg

T07-2340-09. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Dark bay, 15.2 hands, 5 years old
"Hunting Luck" has a very gentle spirit, and an appealingly friendly nature. This cute little guy was quiet as a churchmouse when taken out for "photo call," and clearly appreciated attention! Could this be your next pony club or kid's hunter superstar? Trainer says Hunting has no issues...except a marked lack of speed! Price: $1,500. Call Kirk Wong at 813-789-7252.

Silver Link:

http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/SilverLink.jpg

T07-2351-09. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Light gray, 15.2 hands, 4 years old
"Silver Link" is a feminine, eye-catching filly with a spate of famous ancestors: her grandfather is Kentucky Derby winner and world-class sire Sunday Silence! This good-natured young lady is tractable and has great manners. She does have a cloudy spot in one eye, but does not appear at all affected by it. Trainer says Silver is running soundly with clean legs; she's just not competitive enough to move on with him to the next track at the close of the Suffolk meet. Would make a fancy kid's hunter or a fetching Welsh pony-cross broodmare! Price: $1,500 negotiable. Call Tito Rivera, 401-419-6473.

Vexation:

http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Vexation.jpg

T07-2375-09. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Chestnut, 16.1 hands, 6 years old
"Vexation" is a FANTASTIC-looking horse: he oozes class from every pore! A look into his history and you'll see that's not surprising: he was bred at the world-renowned Claiborne Farm in Kentucky, and counts a host of champions among his closest relatives. This is a horse who is quick to trust and bond with his rider; really wants to have a job and to succeed for his person! He is destined to be the horse of a lifetime for a lucky individual. Does have some slight enlargement in one ankle, though trainer thinks it will clear up in no time away from the races. Vexation should be a first-rate dressage, pleasure, or trail horse. Price: $1,500 OBO. Call Phoebe at 617-913-3666.

Playin For Money:

http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/PlayinForMoney.jpg

***MY OWNERS ARE LEAVING FOR FLORIDA ON OCT. 10 - PLEASE GIVE ME A HOME BEFORE THEN!
T07-2383-09. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Dark bay (near black), 15.3 hands, 3 years old
It's rare to find a 3-year-old racehorse who is quiet enough to be a kid's pony: but "Playin for Money" fits that bill! UNBELIEVABLY quiet, kind, and patient, he trotted along amiably for us as though he were a 20-year-old trail horse! Sound and a very smooth, impressive mover - Playin is a true bargain: priced to sell, but hurry - owners leaving for Florida on October 10, so he must sell before then! Price: $1,000. Call Danielle Paquette, 813-435-0178.

** Please note: these are the horses considered most urgent at the moment! As the end of the meet grows closer, there will be many more... I can personally assure you that there is nothing more rewarding then helping an OTTB to transition to a life away from the track.. and they will repay you 100 times over!!!

If none of these urgent kiddos move you, take the time to check out http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/trainerlistings.htm... you might find your next best friend!! :D

I love Peaceful Tomorrows expression! I would take her in a heartbeat, but no spare funds to purchase another horse, or a trailer. Hope she gets a great home.

I would take My Darling Billie too. Sneak both of them onto a passing trailer, with my address.

I LOVE My Darling Billie's look - haven't seen her in person, but what a doll she looks to be :)

Looks like Peaceful Tomorrows and Ride the Trend found new homes! Yay!!

YAY for this thread! AppJumpr, can we clone you? Seriously? :) For anyone who doesn't know - AppJumpr is THE patron saint of horses in dire need. She has taken several who needed to be off the track ASAP and gives them the spa treatment/life of luxury until they move on to their permanent safe havens! :D

On the horses noted:
-Peaceful Tomorrows was sold to a sporthorse broodmare home
-Ride the Trend is still with his trainer but not for sale right now - his owner's nephew wants to try racing him himself
-Vexation (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Vexation.jpg) is still for sale and WHAT.A.MOVER. Watched him go yesterday; he reaches out with every stride, and is beyond gorgeous! We'll have new pics of him up this week. He was bred at Claiborne Farm and BOY, does he look the part.
-Playin for Money (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/PlayinForMoney.jpg) is ADORABLE, pretty mover, and you cannot find a sweeter, quieter soul anywhere...let alone the racetrack! He's been with his owner/trainer his entire life and has clearly been treated well. He loves people and soaks up attention. His connections leave for Florida this Wed., 10/10 - if you're interested, please call them ASAP!
-Silver Link (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/SilverLink.jpg) is CUTE CUTE CUTE, dainty and feminine, quiet and kind. If anyone likes petite gray mares...she will win you over in about .5 seconds.
-Hunting Luck (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/HuntingLuck.jpg.jpg) so badly wants to be a kid's hunter or pleasure pony! He wants to crawl into your pocket, will just drop his head and nuzzle it into your chest. It was reallllly hard not to sneak him out the stable gate with me....
-My Darling Billie (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/MyDarlingBillie.jpg) is cover-girl material. She's stunning. AppJumpr, you will soon have an e-mail about her...;)
-Applied Economics (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/AppliedEconomics2006.jpg)is one of the last of the iron horses: she ran 100+ times, retired sound, looks like a flashy Arab and has a temperament like a 30-year-old Quarter Horse. She's a proven broodmare AND she has been started under saddle - w/t/c, shows lots of promise in dressage from what I'm told. She has been on the farm for a couple of years and there is zero racetrack to get out of her.

This thread is great and very timely. For anyone considering an OTTB - *PLEASE* take a look at our trainer listings (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/trainerlistings.htm)! They are growing by the day (look for more this week), and there are some incredibly nice horses to be found. A few have issues that could benefit from some R & R and time off, but are still real bargains; the vast majority are sound and look fantastic...they're for sale simply because the Suffolk Downs 2007 race meet wraps up in early November, and trainers are starting to try to move the horses that aren't going to cut it at better tracks or justify paying the board bill over the winter!

Local folks: Come to our second annual Suffolk Showcase on Sunday, October 21! It's a fantastic way to see lots of the horses for sale all at once. And if you can't make it then, remember, the CANTER volunteers are at Suffolk every Saturday morning from 8-11 AM through the second week of November. You can also call any individual trainer in the listings to make an appointment for a different day and time.

Long-distance folks: In the past, several COTHers have made great long-distance purchases of Suffolk TBs. This is definitely doable this year, too - PT me or shoot us an e-mail (adoptne@canterusa.org)- the CANTER NE volunteers are glad to help you arrange transport (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/resources.htm) and pre-purchase vet exams (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/vets.htm)!

Please PT me any time with any questions or anything I can help with.

These horses are fabulous, and every one of them deserves a chance at a new home and career.

I will be going to the track Tomorrow (Monday) to pick a foster horse up for the TRF. If anyone wants more pictures of any of these horses, please let me know and I'll do my best!! (I am also happy to do what I can when it comes to shipping in New England, and last year cared for a mare that shipped South until her ride was organized...so please don't hesitate to send me a PM!)

For those who might be on the fence about picking up one of these beauties, if I may, I'd just like to say I am so happy with the CANTER-listed horse that I bought last year at Suffolk (Rasor D (http://pets.webshots.com/album/555495976ZwDbwS)), I went back and purchased another one just last week (Salty's Actress (http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2939677960099108256uZGZEG)) before she could even be listed. I didn't want to risk someone else snapping her up before I could get her; that's how nice some of these horses are. Both of them are sound and have temperaments that are to die for.

No, TBs aren't for everyone, and Yes, often special considerations need to be made for horses coming right off the track...but if you have the inclination, I urge you to consider one of the many gems to be had from the backside.

And would someone PLEASE go grab Tir Na Og (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/TirNaOg.jpg)?! He's on the trainer-listings page (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/trainerlistings.htm). His name means the Land of Eternal Youth in Irish mythology (Tir na n'Og). I recently saw him jogging out just as nice and round as could be during his pre-race warm-up.

Definitely agree if anyone is looking for a horse that will repay with love and devotion, just look at the Canter Cuties! I have gotten many mares over the last 3 years from Canter NE and I urge everyone to look at the boys and girls at Suffolk...they will love you forever!!

I've been drooling over him for quite awhile now . In fact his picture has been on my computer all weekend long!! I just can't seem to close it. I'd take him in a heartbeat if I had money and a stall. My current CANTER cutie just became a pasture pet due to Kissing Spines  (despite never being lame in the 4½ years I've owned her) but don't worry - she's got a lifetime/forever home w/ me (and my other TB...a 27-year old son of Secretariat - yup he's also a pasture pet ). So now I have two pasture pets - both which I can't ride  (thankfully both are pretty to look at :D).

Oh I want that horse!!!! I've always wanted a big grey OTTB - I've loved greys ever since I was little - my best two horses I had when I was a junior were both greys :).

Did you get her from Paul? Thanks Jess! Yes indeed, I picked up Salty girl from my favorite trainer. ;)

She's just a tiny little thing right now at 3 years old but that will change. Her range of motion through her shoulder is unbelievable, and she moves like a cat. Plus she's crawl-into-your-pocket sweet, just like all of Paul's horses.

Have fun at the track! It's probably a good thing that I'm working tomorrow.

I'm tempted to head down to the track this coming weekend... maybe if the CANTER volunteers visit him then I could really see him - I'd hate to bother the owner/trainer if I don't have the funds for him but.... maybe if they happened to go by his stall then I could check him out. I really need to stop looking at his picture!!!! But I just can't help myself!!

If only board weren't so high!!! I'd take another. My boy needs a friend. Where are the north shore foster homes?! BTW, have you guys asked that new barn w/ 80 stalls if they'd donate one? It's called Canter Brook. The new owners are really nice. But only 1/2 day turnout :( so not for Winston who needs more than that.

Chiming in that the CANTER NE volunteers are the best! Always willing to try and help you with more info, and they care so much about the horses.

I've got one mare that I picked up the very last day of the Suffolk Downs meet a few years ago, and she continues to exceed my expectations for her. I have another from Delaware Park that is terrific, too. I DO NOT NEED ANOTHER HORSE as I have three others as well, but I'm a sucker for big mares that need homes, so I keep scanning the pictures. Fortunately, Peaceful Tomorrows found a good home. Now, if all the other ones on my short list would do the same!

So please, everyone who has any interest, check out the CANTER cuties and bring some home!

Again, reiterating how great OTTBs are. I have purchased Many from Suffolk (Willie Cruise, Kyle B Lucky, Someone Free, Sea Chest). Willie has gone on to be my hunter/eq horse, kyle is doing dressage, Someone free (Nelson), is doing therapeutic riding, and Sea Chest(Pirate) is having time off. I wish I had room for another. I can say that they are amazing, and very much worth the time and effort. Give one a chance, you definately won't regret it.

Blue Yonder: I haven't seen the gorgeous gray gal in person since she was racing at Northampton a couple of years ago; but she was beautiful then - and her owner reports that she has started work under saddle, with an eye toward dressage - so I'd say she must be a pretty decent mover!

Give the owner a call...you never know what you can work out. As for shipping south: here is a list of shippers that have come highly recommended, many of whom do long-distance hauls:

Sorry you missed out on Playin for Money, but there are others!

Have you considered Silly Savage (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/SillySavage.jpg) or World Conflict (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/WorldConflict.jpg) on the trainer listings page? I know, I know, they're chestnuts, 16h & 5 years old, not nearly black, 15.3 & 3yo...but still bargains for the price.

And how about Almost Persuaded (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/AlmostPersuaded.jpg)? Not quite as short of change at $2000, but 3 years old, lightly raced and quiet.......

If you see a horse you like on CANTER, call fast - I just bought the cutest guy in the universe, whose pic went up Monday evening; I saw it on Tues, called the trainer and arranged a Wednesday meeting, vetted and bought him Wednesday and brought him home on Saturday. Someone had seen him the Saturday before, but didn't call the trainer back til after I'd already bought him.

Also, if you can get to the track, there are a couple of horses I saw and really liked who are not listed on CANTER. I think that the purpose of the visitor's badge they give you when you go in is to alert all the trainers to people shopping for horses, and plenty of people will have horses to show you. Bring your treo or blackberry if you care about bloodlines - you can surf them up right at the track. :)

Oh, and bring along your "voices of reason" so you don't come back with a trailer full. I'd offer you mine, but they did NOTHING to dissuade me from buying my guy. ;)

Okay, so someone should COMPLETELY scoop Silly Savage up! My 4 yr old OTTB Houston Tex, who I got off Suffolk last fall, is by the same stallion Hunting Hard. I have not seen Silly Savage in person but if he is anywhere near like my guy then he should have a home immediately! I wish I had more room!!!

My guy is sweet, calm, and extremely talented - FEI potential dressage (showing 1st level now and beating the big guys, USEF "S" judge LOVES him to death) and moving up the levels in eventing - scopey, brave, and can jump the moon. He is my dream horse! He is always always calm beyond his years.

So please please someone get him! Also, Hunting Luck is by this same stallion!

Some of these guys that dont find new homes and end up with TRF will come to my vets here in a few weeks and spend about a month or so here. I will be the one taking primary care of them while they are here. We take care of any medical stuff that they need and get them ready for their new homes. :)

One way to help the horses in need is to come to CANTER's Fall Hunter Pace tomorrow. Proceeds from the entry fees go to help the CANTER owned horses (and the ones that CANTER will try to help when the track closes for the season).

The forecast for tomorrow is perfect! So, saddle up and head over to Apple Knoll (in Millis).

Does your vet play polo?? If he does, then I met him over the summer - he plays polo with my vet

The trainer listings page (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/trainerlistings.htm) has been updated and as of today, Silly Savage and World Conflict are now "pink listed" at $1000/negotiable.

Northern Dancer fans should take note of the pink-listed mare Dale's Desire (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/DalesDesireNEW.jpg). Though she is not a jumping candidate, interestingly for pedigree geeks she brings to the plate old bloodlines (http://www.pedigreequery.com/dales+desire) by having the great ND relatively close up. Nearco in the 4th gen -- would still show up in baby's pedigree! (I can't believe I just said that. I am SUCH a non-breeder, lol!)

Also in need of a special home is She's Another Kip (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/ShesAnotherKip.jpg), who recently fractured a sesamoid and will need stall rest. This beautiful lady is by the fabulous Mecke (http://www.pedigreequery.com/mecke) and out of the black-type mare Princess Kip (http://www.pedigreequery.com/princess+kip).

My barn is full. Why do I keep looking at the listings?! It's a sickness, people, a sickness.

I was in Exeter NH this summer helping my vet out at one of their games, and your vet showed up with that giant rig - his kids spent the whole time there climbing up on the hood of the truck and sliding off of it again...:lol:

Ohhh Wendy you have to tempt me!!! I love the look of She's Another Kip... and I may have a stall open after this weekend... *sigh* it really is an illness!

I talked to the trainer about this guy - ended up missing her at the track so didn't meet either of them. Sounded to me like she wanted to free lease him for a year or so and then have him back. I didn't pursue it because it was inconsistent with my goals (ok, and I wanted the black horse!). I'm pretty sure she said she was moving him to the farm in NH, and this was a couple of weeks ago, so he may not actually be at the track right now. Good luck!

If anyone is coming to SD this week, go see Dancing Millie Barn 26 for Brenda McCarthy. She is very cute, stocky and 5 years old. She needs some time, but not much. I believe she is starting to get a green osslet. Brenda is starting to think about going south and doesn't want to take her. She is not listed on Canter as of yet, so no picture. But pm me and I can take one with my camera. She is not looking for much $ - make an offer.

Winston is good. He is currently at horse camp, aka our family farm in NY. There he gets lots of turnout, a very comfy and well bedded stall. Literally, he sleeps 8 hours a day and he eats a bale of clover hay (lots of calcium for those bones!) a day as well. He is the apple of all the women's eyes and he is in love with a cranky bit of a mare who finds him repulsive. He's only cribbed the fences down 3 times! So that's nice. For my aunt, who has to put them back up. He's seen the massage therapist, the chiro and had his ankle injected w/ Hyaluronic acid once. His ankle wasn't healing correctly, was rapidly developing joint disease and his suspensory was constantly inflamed. The injection has made him noticeably more comfortable, and the brace the GREAT vet gave us is beginning to work. Some scar tissue and calcification will hopefully be reabsorbed. The chrio has helped to unlock his withers from the sweeny incident and hopefully the muscles in his withers can now get enough blood to regenerate. It will be another year before we're certain of his comeback, is my feeling. However, it has all been worth it! He's a great love of a horse and I've completely loved having him. I've really learned a lot about rehabbing a horse, and he's come a long way from all those nether region clamps! I'm sure if you ask me on Sunday (I'm volunteering) I'll be more than happy to expound. In detail. At length. LOL I do love having him!

We hope as many folks as possible will come out for the Suffolk Showcase this Sunday. However, even if you can't make it then, remember - CANTER NE volunteers will be at the track every Saturday morning through the wrapup of the Suffolk racing meet in mid-November, and you can also call any individual trainer on the listings at any time to make a separate appointment.

I am very glad I have neither the open stall nor the fat bank account to justify getting another horse on my own, because let me tell ya, Spicy (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/SpicyTour.jpg) or the incredibly sweet Silver Link (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/SilverLink.jpg) would be coming home with me. AppJumper08, I'm so glad you've got She's Another Kip! I bet she'll heal well from that injury. My first OTTB didn't come directly from the track: he had been donated to a university rsearch program because of a fractured sesamoid. When the research was over, I got him for $500. With a little rehab time, I had a 16.3 TB stallion who evented up to prelim (and sired several lovely foals as well). When my circumstances changed, his breeder took him back, and her sons field hunted him. So they can heal quite well.

Still checking out the others on my short list ( heaven help me!).

Everyone have fun at the Showcase this weekend. I would love to attend however it is my day to work at the barn.

I know Wayne and he takes GREAT care of his horses!!! They all have good weight, are bedded heavily and not mistreated at all. To the best of my knowledge he has never had a horse scratched during am vet checks, which indicates he won't try to run a sore horse. I don't know him very well but have been in his barn to speak with him about a horse of his and he seems dead honest and knowledgable. All the horses were friendly, looking for a treat and just looked taken care of very well.

There are so many great ones. I'm tempted to go to the CANTER showcase, but I really can't afford another. My mom and I have Willie Cruise, Kyle B Lucky, i have another OTTB, and our friend owns Someone Free. It's an addiction though, can't stop looking. Hopefully by next year I'll be able to buy another.

I saw her in person and she was very sweet. It's obvious that Wayne cares for his horses. I had a secret crush on another of his horses "Sand Dancer". Thankfully it appears he's sold. Hubby would not take kindly to #9. ;)
If any of you can....come on down to Suffolk Downs on Sunday, I'm sure you'll see something you like. :)

Ted didn't race in New England, but at Suffolk...and he is one of the smartest and relaxed horses around. His current pasture bud, Bow, is another OTTB - recently gelded at 12, and Bow is even more relaxed (anyone remember that Second City TV skit - Perry Como? "I've never seen him so relaxed!") - and this boy, who is pretty green, has movement to die for.

These horses deserve a second chance! They truly give their all.

Of course, ted is such a cheap date, he gives his all for a few Neccos and a peep!

Hi everyone -

So for anyone on the fence about coming out tomorrow to the Showcase, just wanted to let you know that our final tally of horses officially confirmed for the showcase is 35!!! Even if you're not "really" shopping, it'll be a good show!

Oh, and that confirmed 35 includes 11 horses that we just took listings on today, and they are NICE...

I can't post pictures here, and they aren't uploaded yet to the CANTER site (will be tomorrow or next day at latest) so sorry to tease, but there is going to be some some serious drooling tomorrow :)

Wilbersham is a serious cutie! His trainer pulled him out of a field a couple years ago quite neglected and brought him back to form, she's using him to pony now but he's ready to move on to his next job. She is real big into ground manners so he ground ties, does pretty much everything you'd want. He's still fairly green, but has a good mind and has been started over jumps, so he'll be a great project horse for a teenager growing out of the ponies or a smaller adult.

He'll be there tomorrow, I think his trainer might have him under tack so people can watch him go...

Well it was a very successful day!
We saw LOTS of really loffly horses - many who wern't on the CANTER site yet, so we were spoiled by having the first glimpse at them! :)
Made me wish that I had a winning lottery ticket in my pocket, and a huge farm to go along with it!:lol:

I had to leave shortly after the horses were presented, so I'm not sure who was sold, but there were buyers wandering around the barns when I left

I did come home with a Cutie -She's Another Kip (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/ShesAnotherKip.jpg). I had looked at her earlier in the week. She has a displaced Sesamoid fracture in her left front that will need some time, but she's lovely enough that I think it will be worth waiting for ;)

ryansgirl - did you go and look at Foxy? You seemed AWFULLY interested! She's a beautiful mare...:yes:

Also wanted to add that we saw Applied Economics (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Applied%20Economics.jpg) yesterday as well, and what a DOLL she is!!! She's nicely filled out now from living on the farm, and has the cutest expression!! Thanks to everyone who came to the Showcase, and to those like AppJumpr and Chism and daughter who helped! LBM did an AMAZING job organizing everything along with our other fabulous Showcase coordinators, Rachel and Jen. It was so organized and I think all involved had a lot of fun (including the horses, who were full of beans and showing off! The funniest had to be Rollie the fat QH lead pony. We were all joking about how round and mellow he is, and he must have heard us and been insulted, because he started prancing and bucking like a racehorse! He looked great! :))

Most people seemed to be taking their time making a decision (Ryansgirl - it was nice to meet you! I'd love to hear how things go with that horse you and I talked about after you talked to the trainer ;)), but the following horses are definitely sold:

Gold D Cat
Dale's Desire
Monster Truck
Wilbersham
Almost Persuaded
Bully for Rush

Mystaire may also have found a home. Quite a few others' prices have dropped, so check the web site for updates! And we have a bunch of new listings that will go up tomorrow!

PLEEEEASE, someone buy Applied Economics (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Applied%20Economics.jpg)! Her owners brought her to the track from the farm, so she could be in the Showcase, and she looked amazing. Dappled out, clean-legged, graceful mover who just sails over the ground - and she is quiet as an old school horse! All this after a 101-start racing career and 2 foals! She is now learning dressage and trail riding and has even been ridden by teenagers. At $1000 OBO, she is a STEAL! She is worth her weight in gold, she really is.

"CBT Frenchmistress" is a BIG horse in a smaller package! She should still grow considerably, given that she's only 3, and she looks much bigger than her 15.1 hands thanks to a round, impressive physique. Continental bloodlines course through her veins - she's a granddaughter of the international super-sire Deputy Minister; and she is a to-die-for mover. Trainer says that while she is excellent to handle, she is also an eye-catching athlete who's "all horse" when under tack. For sale only because trainer needs to cut down on his string by the end of the meet. She's going to be a lot of fun to retrain! Price: $2,000 firm. Call Gerry LaFleur, 781-426-1693.

Hey 4C - It's not for lack of room, it's buying the hay all winter. Lately I find whenever I look at some discretionary purchase I find myself equating the cost to the number of bales it will buy. ;)
Applied Economics was at the showcase. She's really a lovely mare, the fact that she raced over 100 times and is still sound says a lot. She's been listed a LONG time...maybe they'll be negotiable?

ps. He's an Eastern Classic - Trainer says sound & very athletic. 16'1, 5 years old. Walter Wright (617) 623-6318.
my take - built nicely for eventing. ;)

Yeah, Chism, I'm with you on the hay. Same problem here. Room to store 400 bales, using 100 bales a month, you get the picture. The problem with spending $3,500 on a horse, as nice as he sounds, is that I then have that much less to spend on the extra hay I'll need to feed him. If I can find a free one though ... Of course, this is how we ended up with as many as we have. Four out of our six were free.

I really should go look at Applied Economics, she sounds like she'd be good for Annie. Are her legs clean? Is she really sound, like for eventing? Not serious eventing, just Pony Club.

Hi,

I have been looking at the listings of Canter horses for sale. 20 years ago, I took 2 OTTBs out of the slaughterhouse.. and they were great guys. 20 years on 10 acres in the mountains of VT- they had a good retired life:) TB's have always been my preferred horse. they both died this last winter- about 8 weeks apart- a bit traumatic and loss:).

I came across Bold gladiator ( mistakenly aka royal stylist). I am trying to find a way to make it work so that I can get this little guy ( after a 17.2 mack truck.. everything seems tiiinny:).. I have no idea how negotiable the trainer ( carlos) is. also, The trucking quotes I got to bring him up to vermont were 450.00.. which is a huge amount. Does anyone have suggestions on how to find someone else who might be trucking?

I'd love any help/ suggestions from those of you who have more experience with this than I do.

Hi everyone!

New listings have been posted on the site - so take a look (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/trainerlistings.htm). More (including a few horses from the Showcase whose photos we didn't have time to take) will be up after this weekend.

A note: be sure to look all the way from the top of the page when checking for new listings, as many horses - like the beautiful, true-black mare Only One Regal (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/OnlyOneRegal2007.jpg) and the stunning 17-hander Pine Breeze (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/PineBreezeNEW.jpg) - are coming back into the listings after a hiatus, and are marked with "Back in the Listings!" Since their original listings were taken last year, their database numbers are lower and they are placed higher up on the page, not at the bottom with the "new" new listings.

And for all you Applied Economics fans (I call President of her fan club! :) ) - CHECK OUT this recent pic (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/AppliedEcUnderSaddle.jpg)we just received of her under saddle! THIS IS A MARE WHO RAN 101 TIMES AND HAS HAD 2 BABIES. Unbelievable horse.:yes:

Ooo he was a hottie! You should buy him :yes:

Has anyone snapped up He's An Eastern Classic? He was Nice too!

Ugh, don't I know it!!! My boss alluded today that I might be getting a promotion soon, if that comes through in the next couple weeks and either of these guys are still around, I'll have to do some serious thinking... I took He's An Eastern Classic's listing Saturday and grabbed Ellen Sunday to say "get ready for this one!"

Now that his photo is online I know he won't last, but I suppose I can't be greedy!

Does anyone know if Top Buckaroo http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/TopBuckaroo.jpg is still available? Anybody seen her in person? I've been lurking here, and I keep telling myself I have to wait until spring to get another horse, but I don't know if I have the willpower!

I saw Top Buckaroo on Saturday, and she jogged out totally sound. For being on stall rest, she was very well behaved jogging out right next to the track, and is definitely a nice mare. She only had one leg still wrapped to protect the cut, but she's healing up real nice and is going to be good as new soon. For a negotiable $1000, she's a total bargain!

Her picture is a bit awkward, but with a little work to build up that topline, she's going to be a real looker...

OH. MY. GOODNESS. Hesaneasternclassic. Is. Gorgeous.

LBM, get him QUICK!! I don't have the room for another horse but wow is he a specimen. He's amazing ... Nicely uphill built, nice size, great hindquarters, shoulder, neck, and a bit of chrome. Please a COTHer get him and then I can live through you! ... Oh wow. My fiance keeps telling me not to keep looking "at that CANTER horse porn" but he agrees that this guy is SUPER nice! I am so jealous of whoever buys him!

Canter works with Carlos, so if you want that horse, talk to a canter person.
I think you would give the horse a great home and really helping the horse.

Well it depends on a lot of things like soundness, size, what you intend to do w/ the horse, racing ability (if they hate racing chances are the owner/trainer is going to want them gone sooner rather than later). The chances of getting a 16+ hand 100% sound horse who hasn't raced much for $1000 is very slim but you never know - it can't hurt to ask. The one thing they don't care for is people who aren't really interested in buying but call and want to see the horse anyways. It's just a waste of their time and I can't blame them for not being happy about that.

The track is closing very, very soon and some owners/trainers have already shipped out so if you are interested in one then you should really take a trip down there. Email "17handtb" who is a CANTER volunteer and she can help you out. They are there on Saturday mornings and can show you the horses you are interested in. I was down there this morning - the weather wasn't great but it was still worth taking the trip down.

OTTB's are amazing horses and they deserve to go to good homes :).

ThrghbrdJmpr, I agree with ryansgirl especially about being considerate towards trainers' time. Are you thinking of Casey Is, who has been off the track for a while? Considering that the price range on CANTER NE is from $0 - $3999, and given that it is a buyer's market right now, my personal opinion is that an offer of $2000- 2500 would be reasonable depending temperament, soundness, and how much retraining he has had. Purely my opinion.

ThrghbrdJmpr
Oct. 28, 2007, 01:25 AM
Yes it was Casey I was looking at... I was hoping it might be a little less considering his age. Yes he's been "restarted" but in my experience God only knows what that means. he caught my eye for some reason. I can't hadle putting that much out right now and $500 for shipping etc etc. I'll just concentrate on my current CANTER cutie and be ready to shop next fall ;-) Thanks for the advice!

Oh I know what you're saying. But I'd hate to have you rule out making an offer based purely on my opinion. I don't think it would be out of line at all to call, get a better idea of exactly what kind of work this boy has had in the last four years, and make a lower offer provided you are serious. Sometimes a good home really is more important to some trainers than price!

Blugal
Oct. 28, 2007, 01:45 AM
Caveat: I don't know any of the specific details of the horses/trainer/track you're talking about.

Figure out what your budget is, include shipping, (and of course care for the horse once you own it)... and tell them. You don't know what the owner/trainer's bottom line is. As mentioned previously, b/c it's the end of the season, sometimes they'd rather move a horse than feed it or ship it back to the owner or the next track.

My experience has been that if you go this route, you need to be prepared to take the horse without further ado (no vet check, no riding or trotting it outside its stall, whatever). But if you don't mind the risk, you could end up with a great deal.

ThrghbrdJmpr
Oct. 28, 2007, 02:54 AM
the upkeep is not a big deal to me. We are in the process of building our own place rightnow so it would only be for a few months. I just really didn't plan on getting another one this fall, hence I didn't really prepare to spend 3k on a horse. LOL! if he needed a home at a reasonable price I could take him and take care of him. My mare does need a companion once we move in ;-) I'm not really concerned about vet checks and all that. As long as he looked and moved ok it'd be fine with me. My current mare had about as bad a bow as i've ever seen... I adopted her knowing full well what we were getting into and she's thriving. Worst case, they'll look pretty in my pasture.. I just enjoy the priveledge of being around them. I guess I'll call and put a bug in their ear. if he needs to move in a hurry for a lower price then they can call me. I don't think that's offensive, right? Thanks for the input!

chism
Oct. 28, 2007, 09:48 AM
I think that as long as you're seriously going to take this horse if he meets your needs, then call the trainer, talk about the horse and discuss price. There are some that are not really negotiable on price and some that are pretty negotiable to the right home. You just don't know until you ask. The CANTER folks are a great resource as well, they have experience with these trainers and may know whether or not they're likely to be negotiable.

ROTFL - Yes...little Lucy is a Hoot all right! Doesn't know she is supposed to be a pony. Thinks she is a racehorse like her mama. When I see those stilts for legs...I sometimes wonder too. She is just 4 months old, but I will need to wean her soon as she is draining her mom. That big baby can eat & Sweetener is already starting to squeal at her & tell her "Leave me alone"!

Spicy was happily munching her hay when I left the barn. She appears a little unsure & slightly nervous. Hopefully a little turnout will fix that. Will give that a try in the a.m. Sweetener immediately adopted a pony friend when she came. I'm sure out of the 18 ponies residing at the farm, there must be one Spicy will like!

Spicy Tour may have been the smallest one at the track, but she can be the biggest one on the pony farm!

THANK YOU to DKL for all her help this weekend as I was out of town and off e-mail! She spoke with Hunting Luck's trainer and someone is coming to look at him tomorrow - keep your fingers crossed!

We'll have some new listings up later today, including a few that are also must-sells. If anyone is looking for a sweet-natured, steady-eddie horse with some mileage under his belt, we will be listing a 7-year-old TB gelding named "Hank" who is currently working as a pony horse...has gone Western, trail riding, you name it! He is $800 OBO and MUST SELL. Unfortunately, his connections were not around on Sat. when the volunteers went to take a picture (racing was cancelled that day due to the Nor'easter), but if anyone would like to call on him in the meantime, his owner is Eric Lato, 352-398-5530.

Hank is adorable and very sweet. He's got personality plus! So after I decided I loffed him, I scheduled a PPE with a track vet just to be safe. So if he's healthy in general and sound for what I want to do, he will be home by the end of the week. :) Yay! Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Just an update -- the CANTER page says that Hunting Luck was put into their adoption program thanks to some good Samaritans. The sweet boy is safe and will be sure to have a good home, thankfully. Thank you thank you whoever donated!

cbv- I just saw Chester the great in his stall. He was very friendly, and is ADORABLE in person. His trainer wasn't around, so I can't speak for soundness. However, he's even cuter in person, and is definately worth a look.

I saw Chester out of the stall. He was pretty cute. But, I'd say that he should go to someone with good handling skills. He was pretty angry when we moved on to look at his neighbor and expressed it by tearing his stall down. I've never actually seen that before. He was not mean natured, just too hopped up. I understand he's been run really hard this season. His trainer told me that she thought he should go to a home that really worked him. Probably because he's pretty naughty when given a lot of time to devise a good scheme. That being said, I'd have taken him. You know, if I had a place. I like the wild ones. But, if you're really interested you should contact CANTER, they always have the inside scoop. A comprehensive PPE wouldn't go amiss here either.

Any info on Silly Savage or Number two hammer?

Ack!! I'm staring at the phone waiting for the vet to call.

To make this post not so pointless - someone buy Hank's neighbor Buck Starts Here (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/BuckStartsHereHead.jpg). He has had some time off already and needs a job. The trainer hopped on him bareback with a halter and rode him around the shedrow and he was sensible as anything. He has a solid build and although he's long backed, he strikes me as the type that would make a good lesson horse with some retraining.

I saw Number Two Hammer in his stall - looked very cute and friendly!! Didn't look like he was as big as I would have expected, but I didn't get a chance to see him out, as I ended up finding my guy before #2's trainer returned to the barn. I didn't get to see Silly Savage. But you should go check them out!!

YAY HANK!

I second the suggestion to check out Buck Starts Here (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/BuckStartsHere.jpg). What a NICE horse. Very very cute, and such a nice personality!

Senior Coco (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/SeniorCoco.jpg), who was just added to the site, is also in great need of a new home. He is thin and a little sad at the track, but should perk up with some groceries, pampering, and a new life. He is a truly kind animal and deserves someone to love him. The asking price is VERY negotiable. His situation is urgent.

And those of you looking for serious resale/show projects: we cannot figure out how Rapid Fury (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/RapidFury.jpg) hasn't sold yet. She's only 3, incredibly elegant, and a beautiful mover! Sound, gentle, lightly raced - she simply hates racing and is miserable at the track. At $1,500 negotiable, she is a definite bargain!

Yeay!!! How about "Hankering for an OTTB?" JK....dorky, I know. :) I'm so happy for Hank and for you. He's a lucky boy, you'll never regret it.

FWIW - I can't believe Rapid Fury hasn't sold either. I've seen her in person, she is CUTE, CUTE, CUTE. At her age there's not a lot of track to undo and not a lot of mileage either. She's (IMO) probably one of the best deals to be had at the track. Someone go get her and post about it quick. ;)

Re: Senior Coco,

he breaks my heart too, i am so cash poor at the moment, but i have place for him, if they will bring the price down. Have you seen him? Is he at least sound? I feel like he really needs some groceries before winter!!

His listing says he's body sore (big surprise there!!)... he has 21 starts according to his pedigree query info (http://www.pedigreequery.com/senior+coco)... he didn't do too badly either!

I bet he'll be really nice looking when he's healthy again...

Number Two Hammer is coming home with me Friday. Don't want to jinx it, having had trouble the last time I tried to take one of these home, but I just got off the phone with his trainer, and she seems like a really nice person, so I have every reason to believe that the horse will be there when I go to get him. I'm going first thing in the morning, Chism. ;)

My daughter is a little tentative, but I assured her I'll ride him first, before I make her ride him. Hah! Then he'll be mine, all mine. No, seriously, I have a lovely horse of my own, this one is for her.

I'm really thrilled. :D

And it looks like Bold Gladiator (who needs a name change) will be coming home with/ to me this week, as well. Also keeping fingers crossed and trying to get shipping to Vt arranged. (should probably finish fixing the fence lol:)

I wish I had the cash to fill up my barn and pasture and take the time to find them all good homes!!!! where is the patron fairy of horsekeepers...?

I guess that is the reason for the trainer's comment "spunky but smart - just needs a job!"

Was someone calling me?

If I could just find someone to fix my damn wand, there would be no pink list and everybody's stalls would be clean.

;)

Seriously, though, that's great news guys! Number Two Hammer is a real looker and should be quite the athlete once that ankle sets.

I'm so glad Bold Gladiator has a home too. You could call him Russell Crowe, or Maximus (you know, from the movie Gladiator)!

Oh that picture of Senior Coco makes me want to go feed him myself right now. I wonder if he's ulcer-y. Either way he'll feel better with more hay in his tummy. He's a neat color chestnut, too, with a mane so dark he looks like a baynut!

Well, yes (and wings and kick-a$$ knee-high platform boots also), but sadly, no wand mechanics. So y'all have to fend for yourselves with the lotto numbers. As for the stalls, I'm getting through them, one at a time...
