View Full Version : ***NEW on 12/28, SEE POST #127*** HORSE TREAT Secret Santa

Oct. 4, 2007, 08:26 PM
My horses and I had such fun with this last year!
PLEASE NOTE: This is DIFFERENT from the regular COTH Secret Santa. I think last year was the first year it was done.
This Secret Santa escapade allows YOUR HORSES to send treats to OTHER HORSES. You can sign up one, two or sixty (ohpleasedon't) horses but that's how many personalized treat boxes you will have to mail (because horses are notoriously bad about getting to the Post Office in a timely manner).
One different thing is the spending levels... we have none. You should be able to send a nice box of treats for between $15-20, so that limit can apply for everyone.
If your horses want to join in, please send the following info to: horse_treat_ss@yahoo.com... and yes the list is being borrowed shamelessly from Chocomare:
1. Your COTH screen name
2. Your real name and full mailing address, including country
3. Your e-mail address
4. Your phone number (Your SS will be instructed to only use this number in the event they choose to ship via UPS. It may help get a package to you that was incorrectly addressed.)
5. The name(s) of your horse(s)
6. Any descriptive info about your horse(s) that you want to share
7. FOR EACH HORSE you are signing up (please try to make it clear which list goes with which horse) -- treat likes, dislikes, allergies, health considerations
DEADLINE FOR SIGN-UP IS OCTOBER 31, 2007. I will distribute gifters and giftees by Monday, November 5. Any questions please let me know... this is my first time doing this kind of thing and I will gratefully accept any suggestions or criticism!

Well, I have just as much fun as Ted putting a gift package together, because Ted says, "Mom - buy these!" and then, of course, he has to try them out to make sure they're good enough to include. Or I have to try out new horse treat recipes.
But I'm hoping this sort of thing will instill in him the idea of giving so that when he's a lawyer he will do pro bono work for equine rescues. Which, cough cough Ted, won't happen if you don't start studying for those LSATs!!

Sprite had a great time with the Horse Treat SS last year...and this year he'll have to share his treats with Huey (his OTTB stand-in while Sprite's on the injured list).
I'm sending in my email now to sign up my little red horse...and my (borrowed) big red horse!

I had a great time with this last year! This year, I know for certain I do not have the time to shop or browse for treats. I won't be home until Dec 21 this year. so if you don't mind a late player I'll be in for the fun.

Oh and a few admin notes: Brio, I'm SURE that if you explained (via an alter of course) your situation to your recipient horse, he/she would be happy to wait. Last year I was late sending everything and heard no complaints!
Eventer55 I sent you an email with a question.
Hey do you think my horses could participate or is that tacky? I don't really have someone here to pull the names and send them out so I'd know who would be giving to my horses. Hmmm. Maybe they'd better sit this year out... :(

JoZ, absolutely! It's not YOU, it's your horses. Sure, I have to help Ted mail the package as he doesn't ahve a drivers permit, and wrapping up the packing is a pain without those ever so important opposable thumbs, but it's TED'S gift. Not mine.

Both of my girls made out like bandits last year. Everything was right up there alley. The pastries were a HUGE hit with Candy. I also had a lot of fun shopping for tarheel07's horse Sprite. I remember finding a Sprite hat at a store and in to the box it went since it was too cute to pass up. (Even if it wasn't a "treat".)

Sprite LOVED his box of treats last year -- and I love the Sprite hat! I wear it all the time -- the folks at the barn joke that it's so if I wander off at a show, someone can reunite my with my horse. I do have to explain to folks that my horse wasn't named after the soda

Hmmm...not many hats that somehow designate the word, "Ted."
But I bet there are hats that look like yellow peep chix.
Actually...Ted's recipient was supposed to get a marshmallow peep weenie stuffied ornament...but it was so precious, and then I couldn't find another...well, you can guess what happened. but I did add something else to make up for the lack.

Hi everyone,
I am going to start sending out the "who got whom" emails in the next couple of minutes. I will be sending them from a different email address (I find the yahoo webmail interface a pain in the you-know-what) but will of course have HORSE TREAT SECRET SANTA as the message title. The email address I'll be sending from is ________ @verizon.net. Check your junk mail folder if you don't get the message by tonight, and if you STILL don't have it, let me know and I'll PM it to you!
Recap:
A) Try to mail your goodie package by the first week of December
B) Go ahead and create an alter if you want to tease your recipient horse, but I'd suggest using PMs or emails to do so -- I don't know if Erin would tolerate another santa message thread!
C) A late treat is not a bad treat, but a forgotten horse is just sad... so let me know if you'll be delayed for any reason and I'll pass it along to your giftee.
D) If you have any other questions just let me know!

Min's elf is the bestest!
On a related note, I'll be shipping pressies to Min's giftee today or tommorrow - they're all wrapped, I just have to get to the post office!
Yay!
DressageGeek "Ribbon Ho"
Nov. 29, 2007, 04:26 PM
Uh oh. I didn't wrap nothin'! Hope Ted's giftee won't be disappointed! (Ted as you know lacks opposable thumbs and cannot wrap, even with that talented muzzle.)
But then, if you saw my (lack of) wrapping expertise...I mean, no trees should be killed for that.
bdj
Nov. 29, 2007, 05:10 PM
Aww, heck, Geek - I don't think that the ponies really care so much about the wrapping - I just got into a bit of a wrapping frenzy, what with the wrapping of gifts for MY Secret Santa giftee, and figured that if I was gonna wrap one thing, I was gonna wrap a whole buncha things, because, well... I had a BIG roll of wrapping paper.
And to Min's giftee - package arrival is imminent - we're not very far away from you, so the USPS sleigh could arrive at your doorstep tommorrow or Saturday (the Post Office elves said it would only take one day)! (And I did give myself away on the return address... but the pressies inside are all wrapped, so at least there'll be a surprise there!)

Well, I feel very guilty I didn't have time to make my home made stud muffin treats...very guilty. So I packed it with stuff that should become mushy in water, and nothing that could be a choke hazard, so no snak pak and no goodnplenty. And only the soft mints - ooops did I give something away? Don't tell Min!!

Min LOFFs the peppermint peeps - and boy, they ARE strong! Altoids got nothin' on peppermint star peeps!
And as I told Ted, don't feel guilty in the least about the homemade stud muffins - Min is tickled pink (well, since he's a very fleabitten grey over chestnut, he's already kind of pink-ish colored) about the goodies - they're perfect! And the fudge - oh, the fudge! Mmmmm.
Re: the peep making machine - but just think of all the nifty horse-related flavored peeps you could make with it - apple and carrot flavored peeps, alfalfa peeps - ooooh - molasses peeps, and maple sugar! And fresh peeps year-round (heresy to our stale-peep loving friends, I know, but Min and I like 'em squooshy)... I'm sure that Ted deserves a peep machine of his very own! ;)

One of my girls has gotten PM's from her SS. The other is flying under the radar. I must confess that I could not get an alter going to the Horse SS so my girls' giftees have been in the dark too. :( The good news is that I think I got my money's worth out of a USPS Flat Rate box for each of their giftees. Boxes to the giftees went in the mail yesterday just before closing. No boxes yet for either of my girls, but I have faith. Christmas is still a bit off and they are not starved for treats... yet.
Although when I came home last night from tack shop (he he) my hubby was eating Star Peppermint Peeps! I told him he better explain himself to Casey since they were HER treats. He finished off 2/3rds of a package and eyed up the last one. I told him he better get his butt to the grocery store to buy her more. Guess I'll be hiding the Star Peeps in the barn from now on. Hmmmpppphhhh. (He also ate an entire can of cashews before I got home. Is it wrong to hate him and his thin self for that? Of course I'm just bitter because I'm 7 months pregnant and starting to feel like a beached whale. Ugh.)

When I got home from work yesterday, after being on call and out of town, there was a big box on the table for Huey and Sprite -- from Min and Bdj. Everything in the box smells delicious -- and I'm sure redheaded boys will love the variety of treats. I packed everything into the car, and will be taking it out to the barn tonight. Huey will be rewarded after his dressage lesson tonight...and perhaps the lure of new treats will make Sprite a little more catchable today!
I'm sure the redheads will check in with a thankyou of their own after they see their HUGE box of treats!

YAY, you got it, tarheelmd07!
I would have sent you a PM, but I didn't want to give the "Secret" part of Secret Santa away!
Hope that Huey and Sprite like the goodies - Min wasn't able to taste-test the Dumors or the Jokers (he's not allowed treats like that), but the Dumors get such rave reviews here on COTH, and the tack-shop folks assured me that the Jokers cookies are better than Stud Muffins(!), so I thought they'd be worth a shot!

Penny and Katie Scarlett both got there goodie packages. One came from Sprite and I am not sure where the other one came from but I know this much, its been inhaled. The girls were kind enough to share.
And Sprite, you wrote such a nice letter and sent lovely pics of yourself. confession, I ate the ginger cookies myself. Sorry. It was vet and farrier day and I had not eaten a thing. Andy brought down Katie's box cause he thought it might be for him, and I ate the ginger snaps. I know why horses like them so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guess I will just have to break down and buy some.

Ah, Mr. Bill... I have such fond memories...
I can get the stars at our shopnsave, currently $1.00 the pack, but shopnsave can charge as much as $1.29 (when you have a horse with a peep fix, and an area where peeps are not found on clearance, well, you know these numbers). If someone needs, I can buy a tryer pack and send out.
As far as Ted having computer priviledges, he is supposed to be using the internet for good, studying for his LSATs. I suspect he is IMing Avery and Classy and others. I think JustBorn Inc. is one of his bookmarks.

Our local grocery store is out of them. (Guess I cleaned out the last of them a week or so ago.) Rite Aid had them today for .99/package though so I bought 5. I showed some restraint since I had someone riding with me for work today. Thought maybe explaining why I bought 15 packages of Peeps might be a bit much. Of course I have to hide this batch in the barn so hubby doesn't eat them again. LOL.

Hopsie asked me to give a BIG THANK YOU to Iceman!!! :D How did he know to send something homemade that contains MOLASSES?!  She's not terribly happy about sharing with her barnmate also on stall rest but I told her she just has to lump it and she's a little chunky anyway. (She looked at me, grabbed a bite of hay, and said, "Yes, and?") Her owner thinks that this will go a long way toward making her extras more palatable , and gives many thanks to Brenda for aiding Iceman in being psychic!
Unfortunately Hopsie and Mystic have recently had their owner tearing her hair out so they're a little late in sending out their gifts. :uhoh: Rest assured that they ARE coming, and they're picking out some good stuff!

Well, no Ted time tonight as we have sleet/ice/snow - not a good mix with a 45 mile drive there. So it's good I didn't get Ted's box as I would not have been able to restrain myself from opening it.
I bet he's in the shed, pissed off at the weather.
Ted, be careful!

Okay- the local Rite Aid had them hiding on the bottom shelf! 99cents per box. They also had green Christmas Trees and White Snowmen (who look suspiciously like the brown Mr. Bill gingerbread men). I had to let the blackstallion try them, of course. After he finished off 6.... it became apparant his aversion to the original peep must be the fact that he lives with real peeps. ;) Peppermint anything is edible as far as he is concerned!

Hi....prrrrrrrrrr..... my name is Acorn...well actually its really AUDGE but that is WAY too fancy to use all the time so my mom calls me Acorn.....I GOT THE MOST WONDERFUL TREAT BOX FROM MY SECRET SANTA TUDI!!!! She sent me really really yummy stuff and a special box to keep it all in so the sassy chimpmunks that live at my barn don't STEEL my stuff!!!! Tudi sent me a SWEET POTATO, which I have never had before and I can't wait to try...and loads of really great things like licorice, sunnies, dried fruits for my beet pulp, bit of honies (I LOVE these the best!), a whole SET of sugar cubes, some great carrot treats and VERY special german horse muffins.....those are really HOITY TOITY!!!!! Tudi even sent me a PICTURE of herself, her brother and I think HER DAD!!!! She is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! And VERY FAST!!! ( I am NOT fast) My mom put her picture up in our barn and now all of our other pony friends want a SS pony too!!!! I don't want to share ANY of my presies with my brother Scooter, who didn't have a SS pony this year (it is our first time for me and my mom) but he is SO jealous and he has a leg owie so I guess I will share with him....PLUS I am a little bit FAT right now and my clothes are getting a little tight.....I keep telling my mom that I need treats to keep me warm on cold nights since I live outside in my condo with my friend Jesse, but she says hay does a better job of that! She's no fun at all! To all you ponies who have never had a SS, I think it is great fun and really a nice way to meet a pony who you probably would not meet at a show...I learn dressage but I think that my new friend Tudi runs really fast in a very important way so how in the world would I have met her if I didn't do the COTH secret santa for ponies!!!????
My mom will make sure that NEXT year, Scooter has a ss pony and I have a ss pony and that our WHOLE barn and all of our PONY FRIENDS have a ss RESCUE!!!!!!
Thank you COTH and Tudi and PRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Merry Christmas!!!!

Thank you audgesmom and lessonlearned (your byline is the best advice on the bb, by the way!). This is Paddy, Tudi, and Cochise's first Secret Santa year and we all had fun doing it! I am afraid these kids get a little carried away at Christmas! Paddy thought that a box of sweet potatoes would make a wonderful gift! And Tudi promises to mail Acorn any black licorice that Santa accidently puts in her stocking ;) Cochise never heard of a horse who didn't like peppermints before, so he was ecstatic that his secret santa Daisy said he could keep the mints! We enjoyed getting to know everyone a little better too and will look forward to keeping up with Fisher, Acorn, and Daisy on the bb.
Merry Christmas from your Outed Elves!

My two girls are still waiting for their boxes. They still have left overs from their taste-testing duties, but I keep checking the mail for them.

Casey got her box today from Gus. THANK YOU! I told her about the goodies. None of them made it out to the barn just yet. The poofy peppermints will have to stay in the house to remain mushy as Gus recommends them served. The mash will also have to wait until her sister gets something similar (or I make her a generic verson.) They get a bit jealous at times. The Meadow Mints are a favorite though. Casey is also REALLY excited about the sugar cubes. Can you believe I've never given her sugar cubes? (I'm surprised I've not been reported for horse abuse yet. LOL.)

Don't feel bad. I was thinking Casey made out in this deal. :) She got the fancy mints, Meadow Mints, sugar cubes (will be a 1st), and the mash. I set a budget in my mind for the horses and then shop like hell to get the most bang for the buck. :) My local mill had some bags of treats marked remarkably afforable. 1/3 of what I saw them for elsewhere which means Gringo and Candy's giftee got quite a few munchies. That and knowing which dollar store carries the best horse treats is a bonus too. :D

Secret Gringolet Treat Pal!
I say, ol pal, you sure hit the jackpot to have a gourmet mom who makes homemade peppermint mash! My mom fixed mine tonight with colorful puffy mints (I never had a colorful puffy mint before! Where do they hide those??) mixed in and Meadow Mint cookies on top. It was PEPPERMINT APPETIZER, PEPPERMINT MAIN COURSE, AND PEPPERMINT DESSERT all in one bowl!! And I didn't have to share with the kids ~ that was the coolest part ;) I have so many puffy mints that I can eat 10 per day and they will last through Christmas!!! I am calling it the 10 days of PEPPERMINT CHRISTMAS!!!! and they are MINE! ALL MINE!!! ALL MINE!!! ALL MINE ALL MINE ALL MINE ALLMINEALLMINEALLMINE!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
oooops.....
Ahem! Mom highly recommends that I keep one or two to negotiate with the kids when their treats arrive, so I am thinking about sharing one, maybe two, of the puffy mints, but I am keeping ALL of the Meadow Mints and the sugar cubes for myself! (shhhh...mineallmineallmineallmine...)

I'll have to remember your tip about setting a limit (which I did, sort of) but then checking out the local dollar stores. That thought didn't even cross my mind. Hey Paddy. Mom wouldn't allow me to sign in under my alter ... but she said I could come on and chat to you real quick and all. I love those puffy peppermints too! Except that I'm weird and I actually suck on the mint until it dissolves. I mean, you're not suppose to bit them, are you? If you let them dissolve, they last longer. Or so I keep telling myself. Plus, I get a kick out of watching my mom pick up the mint after I spit it out - and then, she gives it back to me! Imagine... eating off the ground? Awww, doesn't matter anyway cause I'm always eating off the ground. Mom finds those flavored peppermints at Walgreens. They were new this year. She got a couple containers of each... I can't remember who got what, as me and Gus's other "secret santa" (shush - don't tell pattnic's two horses, Star and Sparky) also got a special gift.
Hmm. Baroque horse, huh? We're pretty. I hope this link works - it's so hard to figure things out with these dang computers. Mom's much more intelligent with this then I am, but she said if I wanted to talk to you, that I'd have to do everything myself. Typing without thumbs is nearly impossible I tell you. Well, here goes: http://www.putfile.com/appychik/images/164619. That's my page. Photos of my real mom (RIP mom) and dad (he's a very nice looking dad, that's what my "adopted" mom tells me anyways) are on there too. And photos of me as a young'n. The most recent ones of me are from like a year ago, just after mom got me. I looked horrible... so don't critic me. But yea, us baroque horses have that typical spanish neck set - short backed, all that kind of stuff. I just think I look normal. Everybody else is different. Plus, I got SPOTS! Whohoo! I love my spots. When I'm bored, I'll start counting them, but then I lose track, cause I can't see the spots under my belly, or the ones around my spine, and the other horses can't count very well either...
Well, I'm glad you liked your treats Paddy. I really enjoyed this Secret Santa thing too. Glad mom signed me and Gus up for it. He's still waiting on his SS gift... so I'm being pretty polite and sharing too. Isn't that nice of me? And all that guy has ever done is pin his ears at me. Oh well, I'll sweeten him up one of these days - then again, he's an old fart! (Almost 18 whereas I'm young, fresh and just approaching 5).
Take care Paddy!
- Gringo
ETA: Mom's mash recipe isn't too top secret. She mixed some of our grain, plus oatmeal (she's couldn't get bran at the grocery store when she went so she opted to use oatmeal), some brown sugar (yum yum), flax seed - also from the grocery store and then she grounded up those puffy peppermints in the coffee grinder. Viola! Instant mash - when you add the hot water. I think next time she's going to mix things up a bit more... but it's pretty darn good the way it is, and not such a extreme change in diet either.

Maus and Nique (and the rest of the Off Our Rocker Ranch) most heartily thank their Santas! Sorry I am soooooo slow to reply. I didn't get to my PO Box for over a week due to flood conditions, and I was in such a dither running errands, I didn't even open the boxes for another couple of days.
Anyway, the goodies have finally made their way to the barn, and the recipients are pleased as punch. Stud Muffins (a boatload of 'em) for Maus, Harbor Sweets for me, and a grand assortment for Nique. And Peeps that she DOESN'T have to share (cuz no one else likes them!). For the last couple of nights I have been artfully perching a new and different kind of treat atop their dinner meal, a la Martha Stewart with that special flourish. I don't know if the artistry is appreciated but the treats sure are!!
Oh, and I am also delinquent in sending out my treat boxes, so there are at least two horses out there that will be rewarded quite well for their patience. I hope to get my act together this weekend.

I can state with Certainty that Pooh's cookies are the greatest on Earth. Pooh was my Ami's secret santa, and Pooh's miracle cookies are the first mushy things my horse actually LOVED. (She has not aquired a taste for peeps but she can launch them an impressive distance). So did willow, and Ami's neighbor and BFF, Lorelei. Mmmmmmmmmmm.
On that note (ahem), both my horse and myself have been a little tardy in the mailing department. My gifts for both secret santas went out last Wed or Thurs. The month has just gotten away from us...

I am going to have to write JustBorn and let them know they should market the stars for horses.
Or maybe not, because then they could charge $5.95 for a package instead of $1.00 - $1.29.

Well, Ted's package is delayed, because of weather. He snorted, looked around at all the snow and ice on the ground and I think the translation was, "Well, that certainly wouldn't stop me!" Yes, but it just might stop someone whose four legs are wheels. But this way he gets to have treats come in the New Year, long after everyone else's treats are eaten, and he also got his present early - a Molasses flavored Uncle Jimmy's Ball. Which, it turns out, he eats in preference to hay. He only ate the hay to give his tongue and jaw a rest.
So don't fear! Sometimes weather and other obligations overwhelm those poor elves.

There is one horse out there who has not received her treats yet, but she will be shortly! Alas, it is not Donkey's fault. He has been on my case constantly to get on the ball. But Donkey's mom (me!) had her wisdom teeth pulled and was out for the count for about a week (it was brutal!), and was out of town for much of last week. But, for that pretty mare out there who is patiently awaiting her treats, rest assured they will be there soon!

And Gus is still waiting... no word either from his Secret Santa. So can we take a tally? Which horses have NOT received a package?
I still have not mailed mine out. So there are two horses whose treats are still forthcoming, grinched only in terms of timeliness, not good will nor good yummies! I feel appropriately guilty, especially as the organizer. But apart from my two recipients, I've recently seen other posters saying that the treats have not been received.
I think it's a bit too early to cry "grinch" (I WOULD think that, now wouldn't I, LOL?) but let's start accounting for what's what. Thanks!

Ted's SS told me she would ship the box extraspecialUPS and I said don't worry, so the box will be coming after the first of the year.
I just told him it was coming from overseas. After all, what does he know?

Tudi and Cochise are still waiting. We get our hopes up every time we see a Fed Ex truck! But haven't heard a word either. I don't know how much longer I can use the "Santa is watching..." threat to make them behave themselves!?

Donkey hasn't received his either, but he was a bit late getting his out as well (although hopefully his recipient has received them by now), so he can't complain too much yet...which is good because I hate it when Donkey complains, he has a big set of lungs for such a little guy! :D

Mystic & Hopsie both received theirs. VERY much appreciated by literally dozens of horses.
They sent theirs out to TN and CA, respectively, via Big Dee's. Haven't heard or seen confirmation that those were received; if they haven't been, please let me know!

Update: my treat boxes are now, finally, winging their way toward the recipient horses. Apologies for the delinquency... you should have them soon. One package wasn't going to arrive till 1/9 but I don't recall if that was a treat box. I'm sure everything will still be yummy!!

I mailed out my treat SS gift several weeks ago, but I just wanted to check and see if they got it.
I don't have the name of the horse I was buying for with me at the moment, but I do remember the horse loved stale doughnuts, and I think they lived in NY????
If you think this is you and you havn't recieved your gift yet please pm me and I'll get you out a new package right away. I don't want you to be grinched.
Michelle :)

Cochise received a big bag of carrot and apple Dumors from his secret santa Jodi! Thank you HereComesLuther!
Tudi still hasn't heard from her secret santa, and she has been very very good. Cochise is sharing with her and Paddy (since he ate quite a few of Paddy's puffy mints, after all).

Just wanted to let y'all know that Min is still enjoying his Christmas loot, and I am, too - though the fudge is LONG gone!
Historically, I've been pretty good about not making Min share his treats with me (he really gets to eat almost all of the Peeps - really - I only "check" the tails from the chicks and the ears from the bunnies - that's where they go bad first, right? - and I NEVER steal his peppermints, unless they're the squooshy butter-mint kind, and the birthday soft-baked oatmeal cookies - those were all for him!)
This has changed.
I found myself with an extra GingerPerson in my jacket pocket last night - I'd saved it in case Min felt like hanging out by the fenceline after I'd turned him back out. Turns out that our grooming/hand grazing session was enough socialization for him yesterday and bonus goodies weren't necessary. Driving home, I realized that it was very nearly dinnertime, and lo, there was a GingerPerson in my pocket - even though I'm not usually a fan of ginger-flavored baked goods, I was hungry...
Long story short, I have learned that the GingerPeople are a very tasty family, and regret to inform you that they will soon suffer further depredations from ginger-vores both fourlegged AND two!
I must offer my deepest gratitude to y'all for introducing us to the GingerFamily... and my deepest condolences to the GingerFolks - following the brutal decapitation of UncleGinger by a large, hungry giant... Just don't tell Min that I ate his cookies! ;)

That would be Candy. She has a thing for pastries, especially donuts. Nothing ever showed up. :( Must have been lost in transit.
