Ok guys. I've stepped up and volunteered to play Chief Elf this year to give the previous year's organizers a year off. They have done an outstanding job, so they deserve to be gift-getters this go 'round. Here's whatcha do:

Send an e-mail to ss_chief_elf@yahoo.com with the following information:

1. Your COTH screen name

2. Your real name and full address, including country

3. Your e-mail address

4. Your phone number (Your SS will be instructed to only use this number in the event they choose to ship via UPS. It may help get a package to you that was incorrectly addressed.)

5. The amount of money you're willing to spend on your SS, rounded to the nearest $10. NOTE! The cost of shipping is in addition to this amount.

6. A YES or NO as to whether you'd be willing to ship overseas or to Canada. We have quite the international contingent and certainly don't want them to feel left out.

7. A description of yourself! This is your chance to tell your Secret Santa about who you are, what you like/need/want/dislike/etc. Tell us about your discipline, your horse(s) if you have one, your tastes, things you'd like to have, or things you really don't need. Be creative, be specific if you'd like, or just describe yourself in general and leave your gift(s) up to the creativity of your Santa. If you have special food issues (allergies, religious guidelines, etc.), please specify them within your bio. Many folks love to send yummy goodies and we'd like to avoid someone becoming ill or getting something they can only smell and not eat:(.

8. If you have been grinched in the past, please let me know who the grincher was so I can ensure they don’t participate.

9. Add ss_chief_elf@yahoo.com (ss_chief_elf@yahoo.com) to your list of contacts in your e-mail account or be sure to check your junk mail folder regularly. Your partner's information will be sent from this account.

DEADLINE: I must have all participant’s e-mails by OCTOBER 30TH so I have time to match them up, send out the match notification e-mails and give everyone time to shop and ship.

Gifts should be mailed/shipped out by the FIRST WEEK of DECEMBER so that any post office issues, delays, etc. can, hopefully, be avoided or corrected.

If you’d like to sign up to be an Official De-Grincher (although I pray it won’t be needed), please e-mail me at the above address too with DEGRINCHER in the subject line. I’ll create a separate database just for you gems.

The fine print: For those who are new, it's important to know that this is not an official COTH-sponsored or endorsed event. It is solely organized by COTH BBers for BBers. We do all we can to ensure that everybody does receive a gift, but we do have to put our faith in strangers for this one. The good news is that very, very few people have been "grinched" in the past, and those people will NOT be participating. Also, we understand that poop happens. So, if you sign up and find that you will be unable to send a gift, please let me know IMMEDIATELY so I can make alternate arrangements.

*****************************

I guess that's it. Happy shopping ya'll!!!! :D

Susan - thank you!!!

I'm in. And a nice thing to happen - my poor tech was just diagnosed with a hernaited cervical disc. So as flattened as I am right now (one grant due tomorrow, teaching, committee work, andother grant next week, a paper to finish) she is in worse shape.

It is 5:00 here, I am eating lunch now. I had breakfast at 7 AM.

When I get done, I don't care what time it is, I am heading out to Ted's andwe are just gonna graze.

So, in due time, I will get my list to you!

So, in, what, six years of being a member of this board, this is my first year to participate. I'm very excited!

But also curious... what are some examples of gifts you have given/received in the past? Have to make sure I measure up. ;)

ThreeHorseNight
Oct. 2, 2007, 10:10 PM
Tha Ridge, I think the best things I've gotten are things that are a little unique, or that I wouldn't buy for myself. For example, the first year I got a beautiful embroidered saddle pad, which is something I've always wanted, but been too cheap to buy. I also got a brush that had been "blinged" by my Secret Santa. Very unique and cool, and something I"m totally unable to do myself (I'd end up with bling on me, the dog, the floor, etc.)

I really appreciate the gifts that are horse related, because I get so many non-horsey gifts from my very generous friends and family. But none of them even know what a quarter sheet is, for example, or that you even could get a saddle pad monogrammed.

Some people like soap, candles, chocolates, warm socks, mugs, that kind of thing. Most people will tell you in their informational message what they want and like. Truly, I think most people are just appreciative of the fact that a stranger took the time and made the effort to buy them something.

You can send email to the person you're buying for, to get more info.

It's fun to shop for someone you've never met, and someone who maybe has a different horsey lifestyle than you do (dressage vs. jumpers, trail riding vs. eventing, one horse vs. six, at home vs. boarding, etc.). You'd be suprised at the things you can think of to buy for someone!

Most folks are in the $30-$40 range. REMEMBER: that amount does not include shipping. ;)

I want to do this, too, yes, what are the usual levels of bucks spent? And, can folks say the types of things they have been given, or have given?

You can say whatever you want! Like some folks don't currently own or lease a horse, so they specifically say "no grooming items, polos, etc." Some folks do not like chocolate (I know, it's shocking ), and so they ask for alternate-flavored goodies.

And some folks say absolutely nothing...just leaving it up the imagination and creativity of their SS.

SS Chief Elf
Oct. 3, 2007, 12:02 PM
Chief Elf here.

Just wanted to let you all know that I have my clipboard in one hand, a lunge whip in my other hand and a sharp pencil behind my ear. I'm a firm but fair task master. I want my teeny-tiny elves to put in a solid day's work but have no fear--each elf will get a minimum of 9 hours sleep, tucked into their teeny-tiny bed, after having their teeny-tiny cup of hot cocoa.

So while the teeny-tiny elves are working to match up the right COTHer to the right COTHer for this years Secret Santa, you all need to be making the rounds. You know the places: Dover, SmartPak, Back In the Saddle, E-Bay, Starbucks, Godiva, etc. etc. etc.

So break out those check books, uncrinkle that cash, clean off that magnetic strip on your debit & credit cards cuz.....IT'S TIME TO START SHOPPING!!!!!

Ready, set.............GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Briggsie and others, check this out to see what others send...its last years thank you thread. I've done it two years and its fun!

Its kind of a leap of faith to join up- but I'm always glad I do. Last year I got warm gloves, a beautiful nameplate with my horses photo on it, treats for me and my horse, socks, a browband, a mug and other items.

The first year I got a beautiful cashmere scarf, I love wearing it!

It's kind of a world wide gift exchange - who wouldn't want to be involved in a worldwide gift exchange?

Have never done this.....Been on this BB for a while now, but still reluctant :)

Well, you could certainly send one or two of your cute tanks if your giftee seemed interested.

In the past, I've typically asked to be paired with someone who wears silver jewelry and TB and/or wants a beaded browband ... My family has always been big on making gifts, so it helps me express that tradition (since no one in my current family wants another damn beaded thing!).

Many people are incredibly clever at ferreting out details and preferences ... some, like one of my past santas, just ask flat out "what's one thing you'd love that you'd never buy for yourself" ... and sends it. It was my favorite gift of the whole year, the one that made my holiday, and is precious to me as a talisman of love from a stranger.

The most difficult part of me is the personal angle. What if my SS reads my posts and hates my attitude? How awful for her to have to find gifts for me (or, spiritually, what a good growing opportunity?) ... and I'm the sort who likes to watch people open gifts. When your giftee is a quiet poster, or a lurker, or doesn't acknowledge receipt at all (maybe cuz she hates it?) ... well, that's tough.

But it's good practice: put your gifts on the open water without demand or expectation, if the tide brings you back something, then cherish it.

I am unsure how much to say I want to spend. Is there a top amount? I know they say most people are in the $30 - $40 range, but what is the highest that they get enough people in that range? This is my first tme so I am very excited!

There are folks in the $50, $60, and $70 range. More? I don't know.

I signed up. I would like to up my limit this year, but with a baby on the way and job up in the air I can't bring myself to do it.

I always have SO much fun shopping for my giftee. I think I did pretty well last year lucking out with a kick butt clearance sale that got my giftee some jewelry that would have otherwise taken up the entire budget.

Overall though I love the shopping for someone and I also like the surprise of seeing what I get in the mail. I know my horses loved have SS's last year too in the horse treat SS exchange.

I also looove picking out goodies for my Giftee.

But can I throw out a suggestion for all the newbie SS's out there? If you want to make your SS really happy, send them lots of notes, hinting around at what you bought them. There have been a few years where I haven't exactly been on time at sending my gists out - I know, now no one wants me as there SS - but none of my Giftees seemed to mind as I sent them so many poems, emails and PM's about what eventually did come to them.

In the past, haven't some of the folks with a higher spending limit also split their trading partners and taken 2 recipients/ givers to be paired up with when a "filler" was needed in a category or two? I did a hand-crafted item when I participated the year before last and figured in the price of the materials for what I made since I had time and not $$.

I agree about the notes PMs and postings

i had Hazlenut last year and she made the whole experience so fun. Even the little "return addresses" on cards and notes last year were fun.

I bought items yesrterday that will do for anyone. I went shopping at Dover with some gift certificates that I won and managed to get more than I originally intended.

I cannot resist a sale and typical for me, I usually far exceed the $ limit I post.

CHIEF ELF O'GRAM FOR WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12TH

We've hit the 90 participant mark!!!!! :D Woooo Hooo. :) The teeny tiny elves are doing the happy dance. It means they can keep their job.

See, they were thinking of going out on strike. Responses were slow and they were worried about job security. You know, kinda like the Chrysler UAW folks. But then, in a burst of activity, more COTHers got with the program and the numbers shot way up!

Whew. A great sigh of relief was heard in Elfdom.

A special note to Secret Santa wanna-bes with cold hooves, er, I mean, feet...

I sat by the sidelines the first year I was an active COTH member, because I didn't "know" anyone, and everyone's tales of the creativity and exuberance just gave me feelings of inadequacy. What if I look cheap, or boring, or... whatever. Feelings of inadequacy don't need any logic.

Well by the time all the merriment was over I was kicking myself. And I participated for the first time last year, and had a blast! I had a WONDERFUL Secret Santa (snkstacres!) and had a great time shopping for my Santee (who alas does not COTH any more... NOT the result of my gift box I am certain!).

Seriously, think about it. A box comes from an unknown person, the only thing you know is that he/she shares your passion for horses. How could this go wrong?! :D

Please, join in, you'll be so glad you did.

I wanna start shopping! Nov. 2nd can't come soon enough and it gives me an excuse to fulfill my shopping addiction! Nevermind that I'm spending enough on vet bills to feed Africa (as I'm sure others are too) and may purchase a horse this weekend (yes, I am out of my mind, thankyouverymuch), There's still enough left to celebrate CHRISTMAS!!! The package delivery guy at my apartment building sees me almost everyday with things I've bought, maybe I should make him some treats for Xmas?! I don't think my horse will let me send any treats in the gift, because he's a spoiled monster, and couldn't dream of letting another horse get HIS treats, expecially the cookies my mommy makes and sends and I pack my freezer full with... I'm the starving, lazy college student who doesn't have any food (because that would require me to go somewhere besides class and the barn) and she sends HIM food!?!? WHERE'S MINE?!?!

Once all entries are received on October 30th, then the matching up can begin. We just can't do any matching up/revealing until sign-up closes.

Between October 31st and November 1st, my Assistant Chief Elf will work with me to ensure that everyone is matched up. Then on November 2nd, everyone will get an e-mail revealing who their giftee is. It will be up to you if you want to reveal who you are to your giftee within the gift, in clues via teasing PM's under an Alter, etc.

I am the only Horsey-horsey person in my ENTIRE family. I have a cousin who "likes" them but never is around them except maybe once a year if they are in my part of the state. My niece, sadly, is even more rarely seen and although she also likes them, her time is taken up more by Tae Kwan Do, softball and I don't know what else. I hardly even know her. So sad.

Oh well, I am so excited to finally get to buy something for someone who will actually have a real use for something "horsey"! The deadline is fast approaching
Only hours do remain
For little COTHer elfins
To register their name

So to your little e-mail
Your fingers now must fly
Don’t miss this little deadline
Lest you hang your head and cry.

Will there be a 101 for newbies? I seem to recall last year all sorts of santa oriented alters. What was that about? I'm excited!

I know, be patient. November 2 is almost here....

ChocoMare
Oct. 31, 2007, 11:06 AM
Ok, ok. While the elves are mixin' and matchin', I'll give you the low down on what happens next.

*************************************

Once the matches have been completed, each partcipant will receive an E-MAIL with who their SS Giftee is, along with the giftee's address, phone number (if available), e-mail address and profile (if given).

Then you have the option of creating a COTH Alter Name (i.e., Shmon's SS Elf or Elf to ChocoMare, etc.) These alters are permitted by COTH mods because they're used temporarily and then deleted in February by Erin.

Under your alter-board-name, you can then secretly/anonimously PM your giftee, letting him/her know that they have been chosen and that you're shopping furiously. You can also feel free to ask for more information than was provided in their profile so you can narrow down your shopping options. It is also recommended that you verify the address with your giftee, just in case a type-o was made by an errent Match'em Up Elf. ;)

Under the same alter, you may also write to your giftee in the 2007 COTH Secret Santa Official Thread. If you peruse through the 2006 thread, you'll see little poems and limerics written to tease the giftee.

Some people have also sent written cards and letters during November to further tease and drive their SS Giftee crazy! :D

By December 1st, your package (or packages) should be shipped. I say "packages" because some people choose to send things individually or have something drop shipped directly from a distributor.

You may reveal your identity within the package, if you desire, or leave it a secret until you reveal yourself publicly within the thread or via separate card/letter. Whatever you choose to do though, DO Reveal Yourself eventually.

Now, here comes the ugly part. IF YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT GRINCHING SOMEONE, there will be a Come to Jesus meeting such as you've never seen. I've taken this job very seriously and have actually had a lot of fun with it. I imagine each person opening their package and gleefully ripping into the goodies, thrilled to get a present from a virtual stranger. And for one of our own to ruin it for another one of our own, just wouldn't be acceptable. No matter how we squabble, snark and snipe sometimes, we are family!

That being said, we KNOW and understand that things happen (loss of employment, major illness, etc.). If this is your case and you truly cannot honor your commitment, I have to be notified IMMEDIATELY so I can call upon the Dear Gems of DeGrincher Volunteers to step in.

E-mail notifications will be going out in batches. Turns out that the actual matching of Elf to Elf was a piece of cake compared to the notification work.

I just ask everyone's continued patience as I work my way through the 146 entries. I promise that everyone will be notified no later than 3:30pm on Friday, November 2nd.

Citydog: While it is too late to be an actual Elf in the main swap, there's always room in the DeGrinch Database or Emergency Elf Back-up Bunch. Someone may have an emergency occur where they have to back out, so I could use an extra fill in. If you'd like to volunteer for that selfless duty, shoot me an e-mail or PM.

ChocoMare
Nov. 1, 2007, 09:12 AM
Well the elves were faster than I thought. They worked their teeny tiny fingers down to nubs copying/pasting and e-mailing up a storm!!!!!

So everyone's notification went out. However, if you did not get an e-mail entitled "IT'S HERE: YOUR COTH SECRET SANTA GIFTEE INFO!", check your COTH Private Message In box.

I had issues with several AOL and Earthlink e-mail accounts where the message got kicked back. Those two servers think Yahoo is spam :( For those affected, I sent you a PM asking that you update your spam list OR provide an alternate e-mail address. Please take care of that immediately so you can get your giftee info.

So as not to take up more bandwidth, please consider this the one and only Secret Santa thread. You may post messages to your giftee under your alter name right here. It will also become the Official Thank You Thread as time goes by.

If you have anymore questions or concerns, just holler.

Pony pops and busyballs,

BTW.. you may want to define "chatchkies"

Must be a West Coast thing... ;-)

By the way.... Do you want full names or barn names on your halter plates?
