View Full Version : THE 2008 FOALINGS HAVE BEGUN--share pics here!
okggo
Oct. 2, 2007, 08:16 AM
I'm sure there is a thread started already, but I was hoping we could use this thread to post pictures of our mares, pictures of who they are bred to and then their '08 babies. I guess I'm one of those people that really would like to see the mare that produced the foals in stallions brag pages. Really it would be so telling, what did the mare pass, what did the stallion improve on...etc.
If people start posting them, I'd be glad to start a web page if one hasn't been already. But in the mean time, can we use this thread to show pictures of our preggo mares and foals-to-be dads?
What-cha think? Too much like the other thread?
MOD NOTE: We checked in with okggo, and we've stickied this thread and are making it the defacto "Foal Pics of 2008" thread, so if you'd like to share pics of your new additions, do it here. Thanks!

I think it is a great idea. I love to look at pictures of the mares too.
Of course I haven't a clue how to post pics....but I still think it is a great idea.
I have two of my own mares bred and in foal (touch wood) for next year.
Tuppence II (Catch the Thatch) a ** event mare, mostly TB, imported from England, in foal to A Fine Romance
and
Jeweller's Mark ( pinto 3/4 TB 1/4 DutchWB) by Hallmark in foal to A Fine Romance
I have some great pics of them somewhere... ;)

Fred, thanks for the reply. If everyone agrees they would like this too, I don't mind doing the leg work. You can e-mail me pics to cothfoals2008@comcast.net and while I'm not a premie member (so can't post here) I can start compiling the photos to ultimately post a link....
I just don't want to trample on a thread or page someone is already working on (not about stealing someones thunder here, lol).
Also, for consistency here is what I'd like to see (if e-mailed)
COTH screen name.
Mares NAME and BREED with a CONFORMATION shot.
Stallions name, breed, conformation shot.
Due date of foal.
Also, feel free to give me a farm link or e-mail addy to include, if you want people to be able to see more.
Lets stick with conformation shots so we can get a really good idea (yes, head shots are pretty but what will they really tell us :)) And I'm going to be picky...DECENT conformation shots, not grazing or just rolled in the mud, lol. I don't mind spending the time to do this, so all I ask is you knock the dust off your girl, stand her up properly and get a nice photo.
I just created an e-mail addy, edited above, and the page will be started this weekend (hopefully).

What a great idea and a good deal of work for you...that is so very nice of you to put that together. I am like you and like to see both mom and dad. I try to show that on our mare pages too. I will compile my group and email you. Thanks again for taking on such a task.

I'll email you the info/pics for my mare. I'm counting down for April!

I own a Thoroughbred mare, also approved by GOV to the MMB (and a Premium producer) that is in foal to Coromino for '08. It was a requested breeding by a client who has leased the mare. Her name is Daring Misdemeanor and her dam was also approved GOV/MMB and produced a Premium foal by Coromino who is now pursuing a dressage career in Virginia. My client wanted a Coromino foal and we felt Misdemeanor was a good candidate judging from what her dam produced. I didn't breed my other mares as I'm trying to downsize, but will probably breed Pure Preppy (TB approved TK) back to Oskar II next year after seeing what she produced this year by him.

Okay,
I have the site started (lets call it "Draft 1," lol) here http://cothfoals2008.home.comcast.net or here http://home.comcast.net/~cothfoals2008/index.html (for some reason the first link doesn't always show the most current updates. I am going to TRY to keep alphabetical by Stallion.
Again, the e-mail set up is cothfoals2008@comcast.net
Keeping in mind, I'm no web design guru, I do welcome lay out comments, but just keep in mind I may not know how to fix it ;)
Also, if you don't see your pics and I put them up, be sure to refresh your page.

Hello, well we have 58 crosses so far! What a great set of mares on this board!!
For ease of posting (my own) I'm only going to add those to the site e-mailed directly to me at cothfoals2008@comcast.net. Mainly b/c it's easier for me to keep track that way.
Also, just a reminder to those who "owe" me pictures, please send them as soon as you can so I can post. I want to keep this link informational, and the images are a key part of that.
Thank you!!

She is full appy out of two leopards, and out of a long line of appys. Everyone is always asking what she is, even the vet said last week she looks like a mini-warmblood, other have guessed Fresian and I forgot what else. Anyway, unless someone had an oops somewhere and didn't report it, or waaaaaaay back in the pedigree something else was in there, she's an appy! She is a real sweetheart.
The stud she is bred to has the same nice movement she does, full mane and tail like she has. Same nice temperment. His picture is below too. I'm hoping for some spots, but I don't care either way, that's going to be a nice baby.

I agree this is fun, and I like seeing the crosses. It's amazing to me the diversity of the stallions being used. Most of the duplicates are from mares owned by the stallion's owner. I'm actually a bit surprised, the ones that get plugged the most on here really aren't that over-utilized at all.
Hopefully this will really help us to see what the stallion throws/helps improve on the mares and vice versa!!

Well, I don't have photos of the mares (or a confo shot of the stallion - something we'll just have to rectify, now won't we?), but here's who Dodon Farm has in foal for next year:
Detente, Oldenburg by Davignport out of Etoile (SF) by Bonjour in foal to Salute The Truth, Thoroughbred
Due June 2008
Leah, Canadian Sport Horse by Cozy's Commander in foal to
Salute The Truth, Thoroughbred
Due June 2008
Unfortunately, we were unable to get the following two mares in foal (one was a "freebie" and now we know why - uterus can't support a foal  :sigh:)
Valley Mirage, Thoroughbred mare by Valley Crossing out of a daughter of Sham (this is the no-go mare and she's soooooo pretty and fancy). Thankfully, she's turning into a nice moving riding horse so she can at least have a career!
Gallic Gal, Thoroughbred mare by Mokhieba - this mare has had 4 foals by Salute the Truth and the 4-year old (Soldier of Truth) has a sale pending to Bruce Davidson who wants him for Buck. She's having the poster children for Salute The Truth - they're all gorgeous, beautiful movers with great brains. We got a late start with her this year, then she had a uterine infection and didn't get bred because it was getting too late once we got it cleaned up. Will start early next year with her (biopsy was good)!
I'll look for photos - I'm pretty sure we've got some of Detente, none of Leah and just so-so ones of Salute the Truth (bad backgrounds mostly - not bad shots of the horse).

Hi guys, I'll try to do updates tomorrow morning, glad you guys like the site! Question, is it opening better now that I divided the stallions into three pages? I've lost track of how many are on there, and it was downloading really slow.
On the copyright, I HOPE people are getting permission from the stallion owners. I would. I'm "assuming" that and posting what I get ;) so I'll plea ignorance if I get yelled at.
Also.....Erin, would you be willing to sticky this thread? I don't know what the protocol is for stickys, but if it's possible I would greatly appreciate it. Okggo:
Girl, you have outdone yourself on the 2008 baby race. This is a wonderful site. I really love seeing the sire/dam photos. It will be so much fun to see the babies of 2008 as they make their debut.
I am on pins and needles waiting for your youngster. I will be such a proud Auntie. It is so hard to believe it was over two years ago since we were on the waiting list for 2005.
Hugs, my friend.

It's been quiet here lately...maybe I've got everyones combos :)
Well, my first is due January 16th(ish). She came to us in foal from a LC/pasture breeding and this is everyones best estimate so...I believe it, she is looking like she is around 310 days at this point. She'll go to the foaling facility after Christmas.
Anyway, I'm going to keep a count down on her like I did my mare in '05 if people want to keep updated. We aren't as savvy as foaling cameras, but it's something :) http://savvysporthorses.home.comcast.net/08countdown.htm and be forewarned, these are kind of explicit shots, so don't open that link with your boss behind you, lol.
I'm not sure if they are letting banned members back on (I'm hoping, at least for some!)? I noticed True Colours posting, so hopefully if Norsire comes back on she can keep you posted on her January babies. If not, hopefully she'll e-mail me :) Jesse's Mom is still on here, I think???

Puchi Trap is in foal once again to Guaranteed Gold for a June 10th foal and Shastan - a lovely 16.2hh chestnut sabino mare that Erynn Ballard showed on the hunter circuit, is also in foal to Guaranteed Gold for a May 30, 2008 foal. The new Bag Lady mare (due to arrive today - yay!!!) comes to me open, so her first foal will be in 2009 for us ...
Good luck to everyone with their upcoming foaling season! :)

Ooops...I am on Steuart's computer and originally posted this under his name....SORRY! I deleted the first time around and am now posting under MY user name. :uhoh:
Anyhoo...Hopefully, you're joking about Salute The Truth's Jockey Club name? His registered name is Boy DONE GOOD, not Boy Gone Bad  He's also registered with PHR under Salute The Truth. I sent okggo a conformation shot of him and a photo of one of our mares he's bred to (though it's not a conformation shot - we don't have one of her). I don't have a photo of the second mare and not likely to get one because she's a shaggy gray/muddy beastie right now.

Actually we have a few January. Our "Mia" is due around January 16th (sadly we don't have an exact b/c she came to us in foal with an estimated due date).
Flipped her halo is tracking who is due, but there were 3 or 4 January babies.
I agree I'm excited to see the FOALS. I'm enjoying this, putting it together, and happy that you guys get some pleasure from it too! I just hope everybody who sent me their mares, is equally as good about sending the foals when they are born!!

Well, we moved our TB mare "Mia" to the foaling facility on Saturday. She is not showing any signs of foaling soon, but it is nice knowing she has 24/7 help available and a watchful eye on her now. I'm excited, but kind of sad. The foal is already sold, so it's a double edged sword kind of thing.
Wanna guess on sex/color? Mare is carrying wide. Dam is a bay (probably carries a red gene) with no white, sire is a black homozygous tobiano paint (def. NOT homozyg for black, though as he has had chestnut tobianos).
I'm thinking bay and white colt, minimally marked....
Also, any guesses on when she'll foal? She is "due" January 19th(ish), and is a maiden.

Irish Momma, you had e-mailed it to me before? I haven't gotten anything, but it may have been buried in the masses. I have two new in my inbox, I'll do an update this weekend. Sorry if you were missed, it wasn't intentional!
Halo, I can't remember. I took count in '05 and it was basically all over the board, so I think the safe thing to say is, wide vs low = 50/50 shot of colt or filly :)
Okay, just added Irish Momma, Hampton Bay, and G Sunset

This is a grand idea and it is nice to be able to see all in one place. Sincerest thanks for all the effort being offered by the site manager. Very time consuming. This adds an interesting cross section of horses and fun to see the visuals. Gives more insight to the breeders and lets everyone feel apart of the COTH club. Best of luck everyone. I just sent Genevieve more photos to post for me of her whole body, now that she is up again.
It was 9 degrees when she was born this morning at 5:40 AM. She was shivering so badly we dried her off with towels for hours also put blanket number one on her and then removed it since it was soaking wet. She was shivering while laying down so I covered her with throw rugs to keep the warmth in. She has finally quite shaking and seems warm and content. This is why the mare's legs have not been washed yet..it is too darn cold. The mare still has some icicles in her tail from foaling this morning. The both seem happy and content now. Cassie was very painful even after a second shot, so I had the Vet back out and he did a rectal and she has some dry and hard balls in there so he oiled her with some warm water..she seems to be feeling better now too.

Hmm, well. I agree this would be a good thing to have, and I don't mind adding them, but I have a feeling maybe 10-20% of people will actually send me these. Basically figuring a lot of these foals might be sold. In the mean time, feel free to send them (but remind me who you are and who the horse is when you e-mail, short term memory problems) as they unfold, etc. or if you want a picture posted. And if you want to REALLY do me a favor, resize the picture to 250 pixels HEIGHT (width can default at whatever) and then I can just plunk it in. Resizing is what takes up most of the time.

Absolutely agreed! Makes a very handy reference for breeders and buyers alike. I see this as the way to go on this. For those who do not have super conformation pics, I think the look of good movement, and/or good jump shots too as long as they show the animal to his/her best advantage. Some horses have certain strengths and nice to show the most favorable for specific talents. Perhaps all that your horse has to offer is that he is the kindest horse alive, show it! That is as beautiful a picture as the best poser. There is no need to feel intimidation. All should be welcome. Just my 2 cents worth.
Some horses are highly photogenic. Others are just good horses, and not all of us are going to the Olympics. Flash and pizazz is awesome but on a day to day basis, it is the one on one experience that matters most and keep your limitations in mind so you can enjoy it. That is partly what I like most about an open site like this. It enables a whole world of hobby/happy folk to feel a part as well they should. The love of the horse should be enjoyable for all.

Yup:yes:...Zilly puts the chrome on all of his babies and that dishy face too! :D This filly got the dish for sure!!! :D He has had so many with the three stockings and the blaze now..it has to be coming from him. The mare's will have 4 stockings, but the foals will have 3 stockings and the 4th leg gets some white spots. Very interesting though it is always a front leg that is missing the stocking and Zilly has two full stockings up front and one behind with a sock on the 4th one...so why does it reverse on the foals???
Thank you guys for all the lovely comments!!! :) I can't wait for everyone else's foals to start coming too! My next 2 are due the end of Feb..so about 6 to 7 weeks before I have anymore. This filly will be spoiled rotten by then, being the only one to spoil right now.

Some quite droolworthy horses, and offspring to be watching out for. Not sure about you guys but I for one seem to be rather drawn to the Popeye K mare, Nyla K and what she may be producing crossed with Balou du Rouet. Something is telling me a little "premium" flashing light is going on in there!!!! I think the quality coming from both sides deserves a Wow!!!
Anyone else seeing "stars" today???
"Talloaks" is always pretty tight on the "wow" factor. What gorgeous babies her mares produce. She is doing her homework well. Spacely has a very good "mare type" as well on "Westporte".
Some quite nice thoroughbred mares in the mix, which is always good to use as a value system when "window shopping" through the many thoroughbred mares that come available from time to time.
Nice choices folks. All the best. It is nice to see them all together and looking great.

Okay, I just did a HUGE update (over 40 horses/20 combos). Lots of folks with maaany mares (I'm seeing cross eyed now!) so hopefully I didn't screw anybodies up.
Those of you with like 2 or more mares, PLEASE do me a favor and 1) Resize image to 250 pixels height and 2) Send me all the information I ask for. You have no idea how much time it takes me resizing and coming back begging for things like foaling dates or stallion pictures.
Also, when foals are born, please e-mail me (cothfoals2008@comcast.net) the picture you want up. It's hard to keep up with PMs, this thread, and e-mail, so I'm (generally) only responding to e-mails.
THANK YOU!! :)

Cute site - it is fun to see the different crosses.
For those that are wondering - IIRC, 250 pixels in height is just under 3.5 inches. I'd have to verify that in PhotoShop, but I think that is correct.

Thanks Hocus Focus and Spacely.......we are all very excited to see Nyla's foal! She is coming up to her 8th month in foal and so far everything seems to be going great (knock on wood). We are keeping our fingers crossed it stays that way! The baby loves to start to kick and bounce around when Nyla eats her grain at night. :)
Spacely...I am sure Lark will have another beautiful foal......that cross will be awesome!
There are so many lovely crosses......I am excited to see everyones babies!

Bridget,
Don't forget to e-mail me the picture of Gold Shiver (:)) that you want on the foals site!
For those of you that have problems with the site, I finally figured out what is going on :( ugh. Comcast doesn’t recognize server side script and the buttons are .swf so I guess some times it recognizes them and other times it does not. So the next update I do (probably friday) I'll get rid of the buttons and probably just do interactive text. My LORD this web stuff can be complicated!! Until then, just cope with it as best you can...
Also, found out Mia's last cover was Feb 14, 2007, so depending on what calculator you use, she is due the 20/21st of January. Yesterday I noticed she is finally developing a slight bag. I meant to check for milk but we ended up trimming her and forgot. I'm thinking the 28th (just because!) Seeing the new foals is making me even more excited for ours!!

Or if you have Windows, just open Microsoft Office Picture Manager (comes with Windows). Click on the Picture menu at the top, then Resize. Then under custom width and height you can put 250 in the second field. Click OK and then File > Save As and enter a new name (that way you don't ruin your better quality original photo) :)

I have a foal due via embryo transfer "out of" my TB mare Lilly, by Voltaire.
Lilly's pedigree is on the delmar site http://www.pedigreequery.com/. Her racing name was Matilda May.
Baby is due early April. We started trying three years ago. First try resulted in a dystocia with a fully formed dead colt, second year she lost a 4 month old fetus. This year we started with a double ovulation and two recip babies, but one didn't make it past 90 days and we have the one left.
Here is a link to Voltaire.

I had the vet out on Friday to check Truly, the rescued pony mare (under "Unknown Sire" on the COTH list), and she said the foal was "knocking on the back door" :). Friday evening she went though all the signs and looked to be in labor with contractions every 2 minutes. Then...... nah, I think I'll get up and eat some hay. And so I have been staring at her for 3 days..... watching her eat more and more hay. :)

I have to live vicariously through my mare owners and you all until March.... though I've just decided that the mare I thought was going to be due first is probably not even pregnant. Grrrrrrr!!! The vet's ultrasound machine was on the fritz when we checked her, and now I'm kicking myself that we didn't REcheck her after it was repaired. We apparently have to start our mare watch a bit earlier than we expected. Our mare Rebuy has been about 75% bagged for three days now and yesterday I was able to express milk. She isn't due until March 1. This is her 2nd foal and her first one was right on time. Her profile has defintely changed and she's getting loose around the tail. Soooo, we're predicting she's gonna foal about 3 weeks early...
We also have two maidens this year. Fortunately, both are due in the summer, so at least our night time watches will be comfortable.

Well, I think our foal watch with the attendant starts tonight :) Just got a call and was told "the only thing that would make me more sure she'll foal would be two legs and a head." We were going to check the milk after work anyway, but since she is totally relaxed, waxed, etc. I think our odds are good she will test high!

Yay! How exciting for you!
I'm hoping that my mare will foal tonight, but I'm not holding my breath! 330 days today and has had wax for 8 days now. Today her milk is still yellow, but is getting cloudy and she is uncomfortable. Today is my birthday and it would be a great present!

Yep, one of the Indoctro babies; can't wait to see them. Day 330 today and I don't want to get my hopes up, as I've had mares leak milk for 10 days before foaling. Keeping my fingers crossed, though!

NO baby yet. Last night she tested 350 with the chemetrics and 5 red squares (the most you can get) on predict-a-foal. The milk was skim milk color and got increasingly sticky as the night went on. She was restless but not terrible. According to the "kits" she should have her foal by 8 p.m. tonight (lets see how accurate they really are!!)
This am the udder was HUGE, I had no idea it could have gotten any bigger, and waxed up. She was quite the restless gal, pacing, biting and kicking at her belly, laying and getting up. If I go by the kits, our foaling attendant, and coths resident milk expert Norsire, tonight is the night. Last night I was going by the kit tests alone, by the pm her udder had gone down some, so our attendant gave her a 40% chance of foaling, but we didn't want to risk missing it!! So....
Hopefully....this is a nice mare, large boned but about as plain Jane as you get, solid bay, and maybe 5 white hairs total on her whole body. We were told the stallion she came in foal to was a homozygous tobiano, and he is black and white. I'm really excited to see what she conjoured up in there!!!!
Anyway, I came home to clean up (sleeping in a barn all night kills that fresh feeling!) and going to head back. No internet there, so thought I would post an update before I head out. I hope I have pictures to share with you soon!
Ohhh, and YIPPEE on this weather!!! 68 today and maybe 70 tomorrow! I can handle that!

Okggo,
Is your mare up on Marestare?
Sadly, nope. The foaling cam isn't connected to the internet. I want to video it though, and maybe just maybe I can figure out the you-tube thing!! I'm 99% sure it will be tonight (how is that for overly confident) but I'm sure she'll hold out on me just cuz!

LOL!:lol: I was pretty sure it would not be last night..but sounds like tonight is the night!!! Fingers crossed. Remember not to bug her too much tonight..stay out of sight out of mind...going in a lot and her seeing you can delay her having it if she choses. Mares have the ability to put of labor if they are nervous and being a maiden she will want to think she is alone in the barn and all is quite. Good luck! Keep us posted! :D

No baby for me either! She stopped dripping, but udder is very tight with a ton of wax this morning. She was mostly doing a lot of walking around her stall last night, no rolling or pawing. Hopefully soon!
Okkgo-lucky you with the weather! Yesterday it was 75 here and by tonight they are predicting 5 inches of snow-you gotta love the midwest!

My first foal of the year was born this morning at 1:45 am! A dark bay Indoctro filly! Some of you probably remember that this was a high risk pregnancy; the mare was diagnosed with placentitis at 8.5 months and we have been treating her since then. The next few days will be critical for this filly, but so far she seems healthy and normal.
Okkgo; hope you have a foal on the ground by now, too!

I know!!! I've always liked the minimal white tobies so was hoping for a bay foal with a couple of small white spots. I got a white foal with a couple of small bay spots, lol. Oh well, she is cute as a tick and healthy, which is much more important to me!!

Her markings are pretty neat. Her left side had a sideways mickey mouse head (with ears!) and her chest has a strange shaped spot as well. She has black dots on her legs and near her hooves, her chestnuts all have brown fur around them, and she has random white spots, under her chin, in her tail, etc.
Looking forward to seeing the other babies!!
