So, I thought I'd fire up the ol' CoTH at DAD Annual G&T party that always seems to not make it!

I dusted off my t-shirt (yes, I still have mine!!!) so I'll be wearing it.

And I am definately going to attend the Scott Hassler dinner (see below)

Scott Hassler will be the speaker at the Dressage at Devon Forum on Wednesday, September 26, 2007. During The Breeding and Development of the Young Dressage Horse participants will enjoy a brief lecture as well as a lively question and answer discussion session. A buffet dinner will be served.

“We are very excited to have Scott Hassler at Dressage at Devon,” says Melanie Sloyer, Board Member of Dressage at Devon. “Education is an important piece of this event and Scott brings a wealth of knowledge to the forum.”

Hassler, President and Director of Training for Hassler Dressage, brings a wealth of experience to the Dressage at Devon Forum. A veteran of eventing and open show jumping competition, Hassler rode for the early Holsteiner organization in the U.S. as a teenager, preparing horses for auction and sale out of the Holsteiner headquarters in Virginia. As a young adult, Hassler turned his talents, passion and energies to the sport of dressage and warmblood breeding. In Germany, training with the late Herbert Rehbein, he began to understand more deeply the connection between breeding and sport. Returning to the US, Hassler built the breeding program at Hilltop Farm, simultaneously training and developing a dozen horses to Grand Prix. He was listed on the USET's Short List, and was a finalist for the Pan American Games Selection in 1995.

Hassler created the Young Dressage Horse Trainers Symposium in 2005, is a member of the USEF Dressage Committee and the USEF Breeding Committee, and has chaired the USDF Sporthorse Committee since 2001. His leadership has helped bring about such developments as the sport/breeding related record-keeping system now used in the USDF and USEF. He is the dressage representative for the USEF Strategic Planning Committee, assisting in the long-term planning for the country's national horse sport organization, as well as the USEF Young Horse Coach.

The Breeding and Development of the Young Dressage Horse Forum will be held in the Devon Room at the 33rd Annual Dressage at Devon Horse Show, on the Devon Horse Show Grounds in Devon, PA. The Forum will begin at 7:00 (doors open at 6:00 pm.). Tickets are $35. For information or to purchase tickets, contact Anne Moss at 610-316-4294 or annemoss@verizon.net.

Dressage at Devon is the highest rated international dressage competition and most complete breed show outside of Europe. Olympic medalist Robert Dover calls Dressage at Devon “the standard by which all American horse shows should be judged.” Dressage at Devon takes place at the Devon Horse Show Grounds, Route 30, in Devon, Pennsylvania.

Yep. And would you believe that I have some people asking to be stabled in the '2005 COTH barn' :D So that's what I put in the stabling requests I sent to Walt.

I still have my t-shirt too and a competitor from Florida asked if there was anything she could bring me. I told her to bring the limes!:D:yes::eek::D

I haven't been on the property, but I've been told that the electric in the barns has been worked on and a few more barns have been renovated. So if you see any of the Devon Horse Show Foundation people, remember to thank them. They're trying really hard.

Wishing everyone a safe and fun filled show.

Unable to attend.

This year, Mr. Joey Starbuck (aka the Poster Boy) will be attending, UNDER SADDLE!!! OMGiH. I have entered Mr. Joey in the 3-year old Colts and Geldings, Materiale and Suitability. Mr. Tchula will be attending with his Mama. He is in the 2007 Colt class. Ms. Christine Smith is handling. I believe we will be on the road again by Tuesday evening, e.g., it's a one-shot deal.

Abode: we'll be staying at the PEAK of CHIC establishment, yes,.... MOTEL 6!!! Monday night.

Monday night: G&T's near the Secretary's stand. Lori, what time does the Secretary's Office close? Will you and Mr. LoriK attend, if we can manage to get our act together?

Who's bringing chips & guac?

Ah, that would be me. It wasn't really out of nostalgia over the COTH 05 party though, I just liked that barn's proximity to the exhibitor's entrance(easier to get in and out for my multiple during the night checks) and because the stalls are a little bigger than those itsy bitsy 9X9s that are in the big barns by the carnival area. I'd have to grease my mare and baby up to fit them in one of them.:D I didn't know what that barn by the Gold Ring's number was so that's why I put the 2005 COTH Barn. I didn't show in 2006 so I don't know if COTH people were in the same place last year or not.

Not that I wouldn't be up for another COTH party mind you...

I will be there Tuesday to help one of my clients with the colt she bought from us, and then be there showing our own(a 2 year old filly and her dam and 2007 colt) on Wednesday and Thursday.

Do they have the day sheets for the breed show online yet? I looked and couldn't find them, but thought they're usually up by now.

I won't be showing this year (trust me, I'd rather be showing... I'm scheduled for minor surgery on Thursday- ironically probably about the same time I'd be showing if I was going... I guess there was a reason for not showing this year), but may go to watch on Wed... not sure yet.

Anyway... good luck to all the competitors and I hope everybody has a wonderful time! I'm certainly going to miss not showing this year... there's just something about Devon - the tradition, the atmosphere, the thought of all the great horses that have been there... it's just magical to me! When my boy won his class... wow... I was just on cloud nine- still my favorite horse show memory!

Be on the lookout for an ultra cute Welsh pony stallion- Fox Cry Nicodemus!:cool::cool::cool::cool:

So... everybody... have fun!

#312 here!

SOOOOOOOOOOOO not looking forward to this and just want my first show season to be over! It's exhausting! At least this one is a "hometown" one for me! :)

Diva has been weaned for just a little over 2 weeks and doing well, but is butt high and a little fuzzy, and the movement is just not really there....so I don't expect much! :) Just experience and fun and no matter what I love Devon. Growing up locally it just is the best thing for me to experience. This will be my first time showing there so it's a little strange!

Oh, I miss the days of Rocher being there!?!?! Anyone else? :)

I will be there as usual and can't wait to see some of you that I only get to see once or twice a year.
Here's my problem....I am going to the midtest of the 100 days testing in Ohio. I am leaving on the friday before Devon and taking Scimitar and a 3 year old son to ride both in the following Heike Kemmer clinic. The mid test is on the saturday and the symposium with HK is on the sunday and monday. I am going to leave directly after my last ride and drive straight through to Devon to be there to ride and run on the tuesday (I should arrive somewhere in the middle of the night). I need somewhere to stuff two horses for the night as close to the showgrounds as possible. My friend Retta will be able to drive them the rest of the way home on the tuesday and I will stay on through thursday (come to think of it...I am not sure how I am going to get home as I won't have a vehicle but, I will cross that bridge when I come to it).
I talked to Lorik and if I stable them on the showgrounds I have to pay stabling plus $150 non competing horse fee for each which just seems ridiculous. SO......anyone have or know of someone with a barn that could be a bed and breakfast for two big warmbloods, one a stallion?
Any and all help would be appreciated.

Anything going on Monday night?!?!? ;) Will only be staying the one night, I just think this is going to be so much to handle for Diva or my little "drama queen" as we have recently been calling her! :) Only being weaned a month, getting that weanling belly and just all and all looking very much like a weanling in the field (she's living with a pony!) :)

Is there a listing for stall schedules BEFORE we get there?

Also, saw the dressageclinic thing.........do you have to be a member to view all the videos etc? I'm ASSUMING so, but.......???? Also are they doing them LIVE or as an after Devon viewing thing.

As far as my results, my gelding was in the usdf championships and finished second--if you start from the bottom, that is ;-). It was an absolutely perfect day, and just so much fun, my sister flew out from Kentucky and my best friends came along to cheer us on.

Erin, this is my personal riding horse and I'm not a breeder.

The colt Bien Sir, who was Grand Champion was gorgeous, but I just loved the mare. She is a wonderful find for ISF. The Swedish stud was very attractive, and a lovely mover, of course, as well.

I went over to attend the Scott Hassler forum- it was terrific to hear his perspective which was first, and foremost, about the welfare of the horse. I loved his view on the importance of mares- as much as 70/30 over the studs in the resulting foals. Very informative, and well worth the time!

Well, my friend Leslie (known as Claudius on COTH)'s yearling colt, Jazz It Up, was second in the open colt class (out of 18) behind the colt that went on to be named Best Young Horse. He is by Corlando/Cor de la Breyer. The mare is a Secretariat line TB.

Leslie did not ask me to post this, nor does she know I am. But, I would like to say Kudos to her for a job well done!!!

The breeder of this lovely colt is a wonderful lady who I do not know, but from all accounts is well liked and respected in the horse community. She owns and stands the nice hunter stallion Magical along with pony stallions(?), and has been very ill with cancer this past year.

Evidently the news that Jazz It Up did so well at Devon has made her month.

From what I heard, they have been taping. However it's not going to be a webcast which is too bad but rather available on their site in early October. If the HJ world can figure it out, why not dressage. ;)

So... anybody have updates for us? I hope everybody is doing well & having fun!

Mary, not trying to start something but you asked on the breeding forum about everybody here on the breeding forum and how they are doing. I am just saying how everyone that showed at Devon, I am sure, would love to share how they are doing but many are afraid to do so for fear of being banned. By asking the question you did makes it hard on all who want to share their news here. I saw many Cothers and many did very, very well. It was a joy to see everyone!!!! It is also a joy to see how well fellow cother's breeding programs have progressed!!! Great day today for American breeders. Many of us breeders have struggled for many years and many generations to produce the offspring that was shown today. And it didn't even rain!!!!! What a day for all.

So, to be clear..it's not ok to say how you did specifically (using your horses' name or breed etc..)...or what you thought of your horse or the experience? That's a shame...to the breeders, and to the owners. Isn't this forum here so we can share? Well, I am very happy with my first visit and show experience at DAD and I hope others are as well.:D I'll add the drive home was rough...yucky weather!!

Unfortunately, yes you are not allowed to name a specific horse or how it did, or what it's breeding is. For an example of what isn't allowed, see this thread http://www.chronicleforums.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=115984

I agree though, what a shame that a few BAD breeders on COTH (ones that went over the line in the bragging dept) mess it up for those who work hard and just want to share the few successes they have had. Also, it sure would be nice to know the breeding that is out there doing well. It would help breeders in planning future crops for marketing and competeing.

I was extremely lucky to get in a new barn and wow, I was so impressed. No hammer and nails needed this year. What a wonderful barn. Very nice....boy do I hope for that again next year.

Lori was great as ever, I always was afraid I'd bother her with my silly questions, but as usual she is calm as ever with such hub bub going on, boy I wouldn't be. I really don't know how you do it Lori. If ever you want my help with anything, please just say the word. It must get so crazy taking care of so much.

And, did I mention, no rain!!!!! Of course it didn't rain because this year I came prepared with rain slickers, lol.

I don't know how Lori does it either, but the show is very well run. She and Melanie are wonderful and the volunteers are the best. The renovations were heavenly and the facility is always clean. Thanks Devon staff! My only complaint was the heat. I wither in it and as a result spent a lot of time in front of a fan. I'm looking forward to next year. Peg

Yes, I was in a renovated this year too ... and I was very sorry to see some IDIOT had pounded heavy duty staples into the wall ... in order to show off their ribbons. I had to call maintenance to come and remove them. Oh and then SOMEONE ... (not you edgewood) decided to pound nails into the door to display their farm logo. *sigh*

Apple, not to be disrespectful to the new stalls or Devon but, people are going to advertise their farms by hanging banners, signs, etc....I am sure management knows this. I don't think it's something one can complain about unless management has said no staples or nails. The stalls were very nice but, these are things that are expected when hosting shows.

We were told "no staples or nails. We have big farm signs and we hung them without using any nails or staples.......baler twine is the name of the game. We also use tables and easels. We had to remove nails ,screws and staples from the inside and outside of the stalls we were in. Our stalls were the new ones and it was absolutely delightful not to have to worry about our mares foals and young horses. It is the responsibility of us all to work hard to keep these stalls in good shape. If not the old stalls will be our future. We all need to make a conscious effort to leave the stalls as good as or better then we found them. My hat goes off to all who have made DAD another successful year especially Lori!!!!!!

Some exhibitors may not think of the things that they need to hang their items, or maybe the habit is ingrained. I suggest that all of us that plan to go to a show make a mental note of equipment that they need and put it in a container to be left in a trailer. I am still making notes and this is my 6th year of showing. I wouldn't go as far as calling someone an idiot, however. We all need to be mindful of what we leave behind at a show and what damage we do to the facility. Plan to put velcro, twine or hangers that can be used without nails. I found some wonderful hangers that hang from the stall wall that are long enough to hang bridles, coats or such comfortably. I even hung a fan with one. Since I personally think twine is ugly, I found hangers that are adjustable and safe. Just think about what you need for next year as you clean and repack your items for your trailer. My main facility, the Kentucky Horse Park, has so many staples on the stall doors and really is sad. Interestingly enough though, it is not the exhibitors that are guilty, it is the person putting up the stall assignments! I have suggested that the Horse Park make the show responsible for removal. We can all work harder to keep our facilities in good shape.

You know, it's not the nails/staples/screws on the OUTSIDE of the stalls that bother me so much. Most of them are out of access to the horses, or at least easily seen so they can be removed.

What kills me is how much hardware people put INSIDE of their stalls designated as tack stalls. Seems like no fail, I always get someone's old tack stall with nails and screws sticking out everywhere. And usually, even in a well-lit barn it's hard to see the nails hiding in the shadows of the stalls.

What did Devon do about that in the newly renovated barns? Did the "no nails" rule apply to the tack stalls?

Apparently that rule is being ignored. We were in one of the beautiful renovated barns. There were several nails all over the stall I had assigned as a tack stall and one of our horses stalls had nails inside the walls right at eye(horse eye) level. People complain bitterly about stalls not being safe at Devon then turn around and start defiling these lovely new barns as well. It's a shame.

The new barns are fabulous and I hope they stay that way and that the Devon people renovate the rest of the facility that way. It was such a relief not to have to worry about a foal getting trapped in the slats or a horse next to you knocking down a flimsy wall. It made for a much more enjoyable show!

I'd like to add my thanks to Lori, Melanie and all the DAD people. They put on a wonderful show, are so friendly and helpful and make it an enjoyable experience for all involved. Hats off to them!

Oh the staff at Devon! Lori and Melanie awesome of COURSE as usual! Kudos to your LATE LATE LATE LATE *going on forever* night Monday night getting us all in and to that guy in the pink hat (can't remember his name) who SO nicely helped me find a new stall.

My girl got scheduled in one of the top barns and there was NOT A SOUL in there when I got to Devon Monday night. I could not leave a 4 month old weanling in a barn alone all night and they nicely helped me find a new stall....................................AND...... .....

It ended up in the new BARN! Barn 16 HOLY crap how nice it was! I was stabled down from Wendy and had a wonderful woman across from me that had a tack stall (and a lovely Trakehner gelding) and she played soft music (my girl fell asleep in her lovely stall with DROOL coming out she was so comfortable with the music!)

Anyway, I was SO impressed with how helpful everybody was EVEN when I felt like I was being an anal brat (OK I didn't want my filly to jump out being alone.....just cause right?) ;)

I can't PRAISE those new stalls enough! I wouldn't have THOUGHT to even hang a tack in those new stalls! I cringed when I had to staple my stall card on the stall door! ;)

Texekana, I agree with you on the inside of the stall issue. I never hang nails really at all...but, inside never. Staples are used at pretty much every show including DAD. My yellow stall name was stapled to my stall and that would have been by DAD people.....It is very annoying to find the inside of stalls with nails when there are plenty of other ways to hang items.

I have used Fun Tak for putting up large signs (3' x 3') on thick display poster board, and some smaller wooden signs. My banner is on a rope (like a rope curtain rod), so it ties to the top of a stall, or window bars, or the frame of a sliding door. I imagine with a large piece of Fun Tak, I could hold up the rope, but it probably would not stick well to just fabric, not sure.

Well, I'm not big on name-calling but what would you call someone who complains about the condition of a facility and then proceeds to ruin the newly renovated stalls? If you have the foresight to bring the items to be hanged, you should have the foresight to bring safe materials to install it. Otherwise leave it in the van and do without, or make a run to the nearby Kmart.

Safety is, or should be, the first concern, and "force of habit" is no excuse.

I work at a university and recently our old victorian library was renovated. I blanched when I saw the gorgeous leather chairs and pristine hardwood tables, but one year later students have so far respected and appreciated the new facilities. So at least some Devon participants can't show the same respect that 19 year olds seem capable of?

I have been to Devon as a participant exactly once, and it was in the old stalls. My hauler very kindly pounded down the nails he found before my yearling even set foot inside. We marvelled at the lack of consideration of others, and the idea that SO MANY people are that short-sighted w/regard to future animals inhabiting the stall. If it's not idiocy it is something close to it.

Hi Everyone.
I’m back at work now (my day job) and have had some time to reflect on the show. First, I’d like to congratulate each and every competitor who showed their horses in the incredibly stifling heat. With that kind of weather, tempers could have been short, but without fail, each and every person was cheerful and respectful.

There were glitches on Wednesday, when the arenas were changed for a couple of classes, but the changes made for a safer environment, so I guess that the confusion was a small price to pay.

The newly renovated barns are, indeed, wonderful and I hope that everyone who inhabits them in the future will continue to respect the space and try to keep it in nice condition. I felt terrible when I had to use a thumbtack to put a note up in one of the new barns. I didn’t want to poke a hole in the new boards. I saw a few advertising posters that were stapled to the wall with 6 staples in each sheet of paper. That’s a little overkill! They were still there long after the occupant had left. The time it takes for the maintenance staff to pull staples out of the walls could be better spent fixing other things on the grounds.

The Devon Horse Show Foundation is trying to raise the money to eventually renovate all of the stalls, but it will take time. If anyone out there has a few bucks that they can spare, I suggest you contact them and earmark your donation to the stall renovation campaign. There were trifold fliers in each of the competitor’s bags explaining how to go about it. Yes, sponsoring a barn would be a LOT of money, but small donations add up. It would be nice, one year not to have anybody in a ‘crusty old stall’ (as it says in the flyer). It’s going to take all of us to make that happen and it’s going to take all of us to make sure that the renovated stalls stay as nice as possible.

My thanks to all of you for all of your kind words. Dressage at Devon is a labor of love for me. Going there each year is like a family reunion. I see people there (volunteers, sponsors, staff, and competitors) who I only see once each year, but each and every one of them is like a member of my extended family.

Lastly, if any of you out there has suggestions for improvements, or would like to become a member of the committee who actually makes this wonderful show happen, please contact me. I’d love to hear from you.

Warmest regards,
Lori

A great idea for sale info is to have a notebook on a table. You can use the page protectors to give your flyers more protection, and by being a notebook (three-ring binder type) the flyers won't start flying away. On the front of the binder you can insert a page that says "Horses for Sale" (or whatever) and then you can print out your most up to date info on each horse with photos before each show and update your notebook.

Does the Fun Tack ALWAYS come off with the flyer or poster, or does some of it remain on the walls? What happens if a horse licks it off?

Don't get me wrong, it infuriates me to get to a show and find our stalls covered with nails, staples, etc., but I would also be concerned about bits of tacky stuff adhering to the walls where a mouthy horse could get to it.

I wasn't talking about you, MRF!!! You know that,... right? No, the staples I was referring to were the ones that you need a HAMMER to get in the wall. They are a U shape, with pointy ends,...not just a regular staple from a staple gun.

MRF,
I wasn't trying to 'out' anyone. And I was not aware that there were any rules about staples in the new barns. If I had been, it would have been posted in the office. As someone pointed out, the stall cards were stapled in place. I was only trying to make a point that it's up to everyone who uses the property to try to leave it the same (or better) than you found it.

The Fun Tak is safe for kids, and it does come off easily. Similar to silly putty, but stickier. Not sure why it is not opening. It was just a link to a site that sells it. I have even hung wall clocks with it.

My banner is home made :uhoh: so not sure if anyone will make one like that. I made it just for Devon, but it also worked at Lexington. I just used heavy material, and hemmed it top and bottom around a rope by hand one evening while watching a movie. I made felt letters and used fabric glue. Not fancy, but it is a banner. If you look close, you can see the ropes top and bottom tied off to the window bars. I have also used it lower to the side, just tied between 2 windows.

I use the binder as well for photos and information. You can see it on the little decorated table, just inside the doorway.
