There are a few... I know that. Perhaps an outing at the local horse show will offer more insight regarding local events. For those of you who might have an interest in an answer to this question as well, you might start here... http://www.horsenovascotia.ca/

Long weekend here in Canada. It's Canada day...July 1st... what is everyone doing this weekend north of the border???? On a partriotic note, I have noticed the RCMP Musical Ride will be touring through the eastern provinces in July and August and if anyone hasn't seen it yet, it is indeed a lovely display of color and discipline. Wish I were going to be here to see it actually. All the black horses and the striking red mountie uniforms makes quite a picture.

The area is rural, coastal, varied in terrain from rough and rocky along the edges to agricultural and scenic in the interior. Yes there is an active horse community although varied in nature. Versatility seems to be the flavor of the area. Not uncommon for Sporthorse folk to befriend QH, Arab, Morgan folk and the like, not much snobbery in existence here. It's nice and "downhomesy". Most enjoy a visit and not always announced. Anyone who has a horse seems connected to others with similar interests. That was at least the way I remember it and to date it seems unchanged.

Some very good talent in the area and others have moved to larger areas for more extensive competition. However, I think the old saying holds true, "You can take the fella out of the country but you can't take the country out of the fella, and I think geographically that has similarities as well.

Nice to see friendly faces all around.

Halifax is not far away, about an hour and fifteen minutes. Yesterday I stopped by the show in Windsor. I noted that shows have changed somewhat in format. This was a hunter show. Apparantly hunter shows and jumper shows are being run in separate times and locations. Lorraine Rawlins is the lady in charge of the jumper circuit and I picked up a small booking for next weeks upcoming jumper show at Karen King's farm. Maybe I will have more news to report following. The farm is a nice one, very scenic and attractive and they have well maintained colorful jumps and that all adds up to a good photo opportunity in this area.

On the breeder report, Oxford seems to have become somewhat of a local hero. And from my generation (cough, sputter) a few of the Buntspechts who are now getting some age on them are still reliable solid show horses, more information to come in this regard.

I believe Karen has a Viva Voltaire out of a homebred Buntspecht mare, which could be an interesting animal as well. Equine Repro folk Jos and Kathy's LA Express has had considerable influence on the local circuit as well I am sure.

I haven't been in touch with the dressage world here yet but in the breeder lineup, I think perhaps Martha Haley is leading in keeping up with "in vogue" bloodlines having noted her use of Yancey's lineup on several ocassions. Hopefully I will get a chance to see her operation and young horses during my stay here.

It's all great fun to rub elbows with some folk I haven't seen in years, some newcomers and see they are still working doing the things they like best.

Having visited Halifax and area in the past there seemed to be quite a few "horsey" areas. Lots of nice hunters for sure and a few jumpers and dressage beasties as well. My brother in law designed the updated Halifax riding school grounds (don't know the proper name of the facility) a few years ago and they spared no expense in ring footing etc so there must be a good need for it.

I sold a nice jumper gelding last year to a woman in St. Johns Newfoundland and was very suprised to see an active riding community around that area as well. They regularly bring in big name trainers from Ontario to help out the riders there (many of whom are originally from Ontario).

I have a good friend on PEI that breeds and sells Canadian Sport Horses and another in New Brunswick but other then that am not really familiar with a lot of big breeding operations out east. I am sure there must be lots of small operations out there though :)

Today and yesterday have been very full days. Other than the short visit to the Windsor show, not a lot horsey to report, but I certainly had a workout on my timing today photographing speed events of Motorcyle racing over a dirt and hilly track ranging from 5-6 year olds on minibikes to Pro-Am who were very intense to watch. Quite an event. Fast, noisey, dusty but wonderful action.

It was Canada Day and that was part of the local celebration...only a few miles from home and surprisingly interesting. They were flying and even the little tots were cute as can be. Defintely cicuit folk as a walk through the back lot showed a whole world of bike lovers. A few wipeoutson the course, no serious incidents. Just bruised egos.

Had brunch at some long time friends luxury home overlooking the valley, and their gardens were looking spectacular, been a great year for perennials apparantly. Quite a nice day in all but definitely weary this evening. Although not horsey, I am sure the event today tuned me up for next weekends jumper show.

I have a visit planned tomorrow with horsey friends, who originally are from the area but had lived in western Canada a number of years, who had last time I saw them a lovely Oldenburg filly by a west coast stallion, I think Phantast, and I am anxious to see what kind of mare she matured into. I know they have raised a few foals from her.

The Nova Scotia horse scene has gotten MUCH MUCH larger in the past 10 years. Some of the good Jr riders have grown up, and breeding programs have been coming along.

The East Coast Reproduction Center has done wonders for the industry . Standing Oxford for a few years, and getting people very excited about breeding to quality stallions. Although I would be surprised you would have seen many Oxford babies at the Windsor show. I think the oldest for here would be about 4 years of age.

I also have a small breeding program. At the moment in my barn I have two by Emilion out of a Voltaire mare. One by Freedom Z, one Rio Grande, one Skorpio, one Voltaire, and a filly by Consul. I also have a Oxford, a Voltaire and an Abdullah in for breaking and training from East Coast Repro. I have also davelled into ponies, my last pony who got Champion in West Palm this year, and I have decided to breed my pony mare to For Paragon this summer. In my opinion, you won't find better breeding like those anywhere else in the world.

I was also showing in Windsor... do you remember me? :) I ended up Champion in 1st Year Greens on my 5 year old mare by Emilion, and Reserve Champion in Pre-Green with my 4 year old by Freedom Z. I have a very, very nice stencil hanging up in my living room that you did of a horse that my mother and I used to ride. She did dressage with him, and I did hunters and jumpers. :)

Hi Reg, Martha Haley here. I just returned from trailering my daughter, Alex Hosein and her former Y/R horse, Lucky Star, to Ottawa and Blainville for shows, where she successfuly competed in the the Y/R Grand Prix classes introduced for 2007. I believe she is the first person in Canada to compete at this new level. These FEI classes were offered at the National level, but she still managed to get five judges in Blainville, so it was worth the trip.

You're more than welcome to drop by, but call first (902) 860-1422. I have much catching up to do with work at home after being away for over two weeks. I think we have a mutual friend up the road in Grand Lake.

My Ferro x Wanroij yearling filly is here, who was #1 KWPN-NA foal in North America last year. So is my First Premium Sir Donnerhall x Idocus yearling - he was just gelded - not for temperament reasons. He is totally sweet. And I must not forget the most amazing 2007 filly by Balou du Rouet. You can check them out on my website.

If Y/R refers to Young Rider, we get a sample of this division in one of the spring Pebble Beach shows as it is a qualifier for Spruce Meadows and they are great fun to cover. Very nice horses and a high standard of competition.

There are a number of people in the Maritimes - Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, who have bred to A Fine Romance or bought babies. I'd be happy to put you in touch with them through PM, Reg.

My DH's family is from Nova Scotia, in fact, it is where we spent our honeymoon! ;) There is a saying down there that 'you can't throw a stone without hitting a Rogers'. Lovely place.

Happy Canada Day weekend, I have a horse Cotopaxi at Spruce Meadows this weekend and I am home in B.C. breeding and this Sunday a.m. delivered a big Raffaello colt, in honour of the holiday I am considering the name Real Canadian but think I might have heard that name used before in the jumpers.

Nova Scotian CoTHer Treasmare bred her beloved Treasure to Cotopaxi and I think you already know her Reg.

We also bred two nice Hanoverian mares in Nova Scotia this year as well so I would say they are as busy breeding and showing as the rest of us. I hear it is a beautiful place!

Cheers!

You may find this funny, but let me share a "Rogers" story and if you tell me you are related, I will flip. From Canning, dear old friend and classmate from my highschool days (only yesterday of course ...cough...sputter) was a Susan, daughter of Miller and Jean....Rogers of course... well my Mom is living in an apartment since father passed and downstairs from her lives Mrs. Rogers since her Mr Rogers is no longer with us either, so your saying certainly holds true with me.

To make a long story short, while visiting, I found out my old friend and former classmate was visiting her mom downstairs one day while I was there and we had a nice visit. So yes there are Rogers everywhere, and they are very nice people from what I have known. Small world indeed.

We had a great chuckle over highschool memories and I reminded her of the graduation in which she took home everything but the light fixtures on the walls in terms of awards, and I managed to drag off some measely mathematics achievement thingy and she was of course the bigger person and came over to give me a huge congratulations, and that was the way she was in everything, humble and very very bright... ingredients of a true champion.

The best part however is this... we did a freetrade exchange and it was great fun. She has a business and has developed a following of "folk art" or as she put it, I have become a "whittler". Well she was drooling over a print mother had of one of my drawings which she had over her sofa, so we decided to make an exchange... I am now the proud owner of a hand carved and extremely nice "nativity scene" made by a dear old friend who I haven't seen in ages... and it warms my heart to tell you that. I truly have enjoyed the Rogers I have known, and it is apparant that their memories will live on with me for quite some time to come.

Had to pipe in here......Reg if you are in Mt Uniacke do pop in. I am generally home after 4 pm and would love to intro you to my critters. They include the amazing Treasure that Hi Jump mentioned and my hunter Oscar who has the same sire as Treasure (Fantast who recently died and has been an important part of our Maritime breeding program), two Popeye sons and an Oxford filly. Seems there is indeed alot of good breeding going on in our area. I think as a province we have always been fortunate that wise people used stand some pretty nice stallions with minimum flaws so our mare base is pretty solid. We have always produced nice show hunters which seemed to be sold "away" on a frequent basis. With imported semen the quality of horse flesh has again been raised and I see more small breeders emerging. It is a very horsey province with some very horsey communities. Martha seems to be the leader in dressage breeding however I hear she has bred a jumper  (just like I have bred some dressage babies by accident) while Kevin Crosby, Equine Reproduction, and now Restless Pines seem to be breeding some great hunter/jumper types. It is a busy place here with more places to show our horses......it is not so small any more when hunter shows have to close their entries and the jumper shows can draw around 70 horses I believe.

And thank you Reg for calling me a nice lady but you are wrong. I am not much of a lady!!!!!

Hi Reg, nice to hear you've made it home for a visit!

If you do have a chance to drop by Martha's place we're just down the road from her a few minutes. Give a call and I'm sure Martha will direct you, or bring you down. We have the two Freestyle babies - who's baby pictures you've seen.

I am leaving to go to sea tomorrow with work for 2 weeks, so chances are I'll miss you if you're by. But my folks would be pleased to intro you to the boys. Our Buntspecht grand daughter, Roulette - the boys' dam, is away at a 'spa' right now to finish up the weaning. So you also most likely won't get to see her either...

Enjoy your visit!

Wow... the gang is starting to surface!!!!. News of the day. With my cousin Elva and her friend / walking buddy Sean, we have been seeing the valley 'on foot' one acre at a time with a brisk walk every morning at 7am. We have been by Medford Meadows a few times, a most impressive local equestrian facility with the backdrop of Cape Blomidon, very picturesque. We decided to meet in Canning this morning and do our walk there, and have a nice breakfast at the little breakfast restaurant in town.

Anyway, on our walk we crossed over from Canning to Sue Fraser's neck of the woods and I just couldn't get past her place without dropping in for a "hug" and a "hello". She was very glad to see me. In fact, she said she had been looking at an old picture I took of her stallion CVRCHAK from years back just a few days ago and wondered where I might be in the universe. It appears it is a small world at times. She hasn't changed a bit. Same as ever, she had tales of the trip to Ottawa and Blainsville, so I put one and one together and gathered that Martha Haley's daughter has her horse in the barn and has been training with Sue. The horses are all looking marvelous and I caught them at morning feeding time, lots of friendly faces and nickers as I strolled down the aisle. The very cute gal who feeds was very pleasant and friendly. The new wing on the barn was a surprise and I believe she has about 26, perhaps more in training, with possibly some as boarders, didn't do a head count or catch all specifics, but I certainly did notice that all very nice animals well fed and in wonderful condition as I would not expect less under Sue's care.

Oh by the way, the neighbours who used to be Bill Wade's place (now a photographer is living there) have their place looking awesome, the tree growth around and the upkeep have made that property quite stunning now. The little pond, the flowers all around the barn, very attractive.

Anyway, my walking mates continued down the road a bit while Susan and I shared a few memories and a quick review of catching up through the years. ON their return, I joined in for the last mile or so to finish the walk, so one might say... I cheated a little today, but it was definitely worth it. It was good to enjoy a moment in such a well kept facility and enjoy the sight of such an impressive string of horses (dressage being their main focus0.

I am now going to paint and enjoy this bright sunny morning. CORCOVADO is on the canvas and I am in the mood.

So if I don't catch up with you guys, another possibility might be to drop by the Karen King jumper show on Saturday and say hello. I will definitely be there. Are you near Wilmot?

Hmmm.... now you are making me feel forgetful because I sort of know where Wilmot is but not exactly. Anyway, grab your map, get your magnifying glass and see if you can find Kentville, Wolfville, Canning. That is kind of the zone we are in. Just above Canning you will notice the land takes this little hook into the Bay of Fundy. We are near that.

Nova Scotia is a bit shaped like a lobster and about where the naval would be on a lobster 'if it had one' is Halifax, and due northwest on the other side of the province is where we are.

There is a beautiful "look off" near here, with a very scenic view of the valley. They drive from quite a ways to come see this spot. I grew up there so its pretty much second nature, but being away a long time and returning gives a different sense of appreciation of the beauty.

If you are doing a Nova Scotia tour sometime, horse shows, breeding farms, friendly folk, do include the look off, it's a nice spot for a good view of the farm land of the annapolis valley!!! It gives the impression of a quilt seeing it from above.

My cousin is quite the traveller and talks of a homeshare network which is extremely useful as a travel tool. It's one of those you stay at our house in exchange for us staying at yours. Quite a good idea really. Rotary Club worldwide seems very active in that sort of thing, of which she is an active member. Do any of you people who go regularly to Europe use this as a resource? If not, check it out, it's a great idea. She was recently in Brazil and had Brazilian guests in return. All enjoyed the hospitality on both ends. Rotary Club is a good means of actively networking with a trustworthy group, many of whom are middle income families, with homes and cottages available, even apartments. The beauty of this is if you do an exchange there is no cost to either party, but you just have to be willing to offer an equal exchange, a free trade sort of arrangement. Making trip costs less and experiencing a more personal connection to the new environment in different countries is interesting as well as beneficial. Just a thought.

Not sure if I can make it today. I have a lot of things to do including making some serious progress on this canvas. Oils are slow drying so each stage has to be given its proper attention to end up with some sort of dazzle when completed. Also trying to arrange a flight which should have been done already and more. Got some good news from California today as well. We are booked for a one week show following the Pebble Beach Special at the Oaks, so a whole month in California sounds good to me. Yee Haa!!!

I have never been to the Oaks but know it has a reputation of being a class facility so I am rather excited about that.

You're right, Talloaks. Stan is my husband Garnet's brother. Canso is the birthplace of Stan and Garnet's mom. She is one of 12 children (!) - so there are about a million of them too.
None of them have horses though. :(

Would that be Paul Johnston? Jeanine De Luca? Avon Veterinary Clinic?

Small community Nova Scotia is. To carry your "if you throw a stone, you will hit a Rogers myth one step further", one year when I was away in Ontario (in my youth.... just yesterday) and returned home for a visit, we were driving home from the airport, a cat crossed the road as we were driving through our little "blink your eyes and you missed it" town and mother knew the cat and who it belonged to, and I have no idea why that seems funny to say, as it is totally normal in our town. Does that give you any indication of "small town" living in the east???? Times are changing but that good hearted hospitality is alive and well in these parts.

We spent our honeymoon in NS (just outside Canso,, a place called Halfway Cove). Very picturesque, romantic, etc, except for the fact that it rained every single day. I had only taken little shorts, lingerie, sandals etc, and ended up wearing the DH's grandmother's down vest and red plaid hunting macinaw (sp). Not quite so romantic. ;)

I have done a once through of the material and with some editing it looks quite good. Some cute candids as well.

Can't wait to see them. Will you post them somewhere?

Wow! This is like being back home. I bought a mare from Martha way back before you were breeding and I believe I was showing in NS at the same time as Reg. My sister and I both showed in NS and had a pony named Touchstone and a big grey horse that hated jumping named Trinity.

Since moved to ON and now AB but keep wishing for a way back home. Seeing all the familiar names brings back many memories.

Fred, you know I'll call you. Having a rum and tonic just wouldn't be the same without our usual b*tch session.

I had a call from Quinn last night. She arrived safely in NS. I hope she remembered her woolies!

Reg, a NS brewery uses some of my brother in law's music in their ads
"Oh the year was 1778/ how I wish I were in Sherbrooke, now
A letter of marque came from the King
for the scabbiest vessel I've ever seen,
God damn them all.... " etc
If you go in a bar, chances are you will hear some of the songs.

I have probably heard his music many times but just never put the name to the music. I am a bit of a dead head in that regard but I will pay better attention now and do my homework. Just not much of a drinker I guess :lol: Who ever would have thought?

I was a fan of Stan's music - more his ballads than the drinking songs. I remember hearing him sing decades ago at a waterfront restaurant by Privateer's Wharf. I can't recall the name of the place - it's "Salty's" now, I think. Anyway, at the time I thought "this guy should be recorded" - he probably already was, but I didn't know it. I'm guessing this was around the late 70's. I was stunned and saddened to hear of his untimely death. I do own a CD of his music.

Thank you so much for taking pictures at the show on Saturday!

After watching so many horses you probably won't remember me...I had a grey helmet and was riding a dark grey mare in the smaller classes at the end of the day.

I am very eager to see the proofs...I really hope there are a few nice ones of my mare that I can buy to immortalize our first jumper show!:D

Actually if that was your first jumper show, you might be rather pleased at how cute she looks.

That sounds hopefull!

Yes...first jumper show.:) We usually do the hunters, but I thought this would be a nice change of scenery. I had a great time, and I think the mare enjoyed herself.

I received your message, and have sent you back an email. Thanks!

I am hoping Reg got some of me too. Did not get to stay too long, but my 5 year old was super, winning the 3'6 speed. My dark horse was being extremely spooky, which is not like her. I would LOVE a nice pic of her, as this was her last show for a while. The owner has taken her back for more breeding. Damn those vets!

Actually Annie... if you check back a few years, you might find pics your mom got from me a decade ago. You were quite young at the time. I knew you the second you rode in the ring, the only difference is you are a young lady now, prettier, taller, and with lovely equitation. Tell your mom I said Hi. I think she will remember me. It has been a while but I have been to your place with the lovely view through all the windows of the natural woodsy setting by the lake and found it very charming. Are you still living there? You are just a "crow hop" from Treasmare2.

In Halifax area today through tomorrow (visiting a few more of my endless family.... ha ha... and to do a passport pick up in the morning), hoping to visit Treasmare, Annie and Koren should be here in a half hour or so. Looking forward to it.

off to passportorama... and it's raining... not much of a visit day. I am going to be at Heidi's for day 1 (Friday) of her hunter show. She already has a company booked for show pics, actioin pics, I believe is their name, but not for Friday so being on very short notice, she asked if I could come that day, Maybe see some of you there. And it will be weather permitting as it probably wouldn't be wise to soak the gear with a busy month coming up.

Annie's mom took me on a tour of the barn and the lineup was pretty impressive. Some world class youngstock in the barn of top jumping blood, first on the left was a good looking yearling by Voltaire out of a Rio Grande mare, other offspring by Voltaire...Rio Grande...Oxford... and not just one but a few of various ages, and each more impressive than the last. With mother in tow, it only aqded amusement as she is "petrified" of horses.:lol:...loves to see them, thinks they are beautiful, but cringes when near.....:lol:.. I find it amusing but it adds a touch of variation to the mix, so why not? She enjoyed it too in her way.

Had a nice day in the city, too rainy to go horsin around so I caught up on family visits and have my paper work in order. As a finale, the "tall ships" were in Halifax harbour and so we drove up and down the foggy streets seeing nothing at all... and having quite a laugh about it.

It was a good two days. Loren is very charming and the Bradshaws as well. Thanks to all of you.

With any luck, there should be a Nevada embryo in Nova Scotia shortly. Semen arrived in Halifax just a few hours ago.

Nothing to photograph yet though. Hopefully next spring.

Which system did you go with, Darlyn, to get the semen to Nova Scotia??

I sent it FedEx. Collected and shipped Monday evening, mare bred this afternoon on a 45mm. Her vet said the semen looked 70 to 80% at insemination (about 46 hours from collection). WOO HOO! 2nd dose tomorrow if she has not ovulated.

I am waiting for my shipper number for Continental, etc. Their rep says it should be able to go counter to counter. Been told that before though, so not holding my breath.

The pleasure was all mine. A raspberry cooler in the shade... grapes... pineapple juice...charming company... what could be better? It was a perfect way to unwind from a good toasting in the sun. I really was not expecting it so yes I got too much sun. It never occured to me that I might need sunblock after all the fog and grey days we have been having....duhhhh.

I think your dogs were made to be in movies. They are very smart and intuitive. Perhaps you should take them to a soccor game. I would like to see that on film, for sure....... ha ha

And when will this market be big enough that a company called Pony Express could specialize only in equine breeders direct shipping???? Seems like a good idea to me. Busy as H*ll for three to six months of the year and the rest of the year on the Riviera.

I think all that sun yesterday has fried the old brain a bit.:lol:

Had a yard sale for my cousin today, and I had the greatest time insisting noone leave emptyhanded, and actually very few did. Nice chance to meet all the neighbours and say hello, and take a bit of their money... even more fun....tomorrow a farm session at Medford Meadows, a beautiful farm near here. They have a three year old stallion she wants photographed and her jumpers as well. I think the 3 year old is started under saddle but I will be doing free jumping photos and conformation shots.

I have been impressed by the local horses so far. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Medford, as you know, will provide beutiful back drops for Jen's lovely horses. You made me giggle thinking of my ADHD ball chasing border collies at a soccer game...total pandamonium. I would be evicted from the province.

Happy day

Impressive Oxford colt at Medford Meadows, a three year old who will probably do the Cup classes at the Royal Winter Fair. He will probably be taken to Quebec for Canaidian Sporthorse stallion licensing. Nice type modern, medium sized, excellent technique over fences in the chute,... actually without a chute. She schools them over an in and out along the wall of the arena without the chute and he was very willing with very good style.

Yes Jen's colt is very much like your mare in size, color and shape. Not hard to tell they are related. .She also has a full sibling to her colt out of exactly the same cross who is four days older and looks nothing like him, a filly who is a moose.:lol: and is bred to For Paragon for next year. She is one of those huge growthy mares with the baby mind still. She operates well but has lots of little insecurites. I expect most are age related. Having a baby will probably do her world's of good.

We got some pretty cute shots of the gang. Today is finishing up loose ends day as tomorrow is off bright and early to the west coast. I will be back up in September.

Got back from a magnificent 2 weeks in Nova Scotia but sure wish I saw the post on the weather before I left. Had to buy 2 polar fleece jackets when I arrived. Does anyone know who owns the beautiful h/j farm just outside of Chester? Reg, sure saw a lot of the "Corkum" name when I was there.

The South shore Corkums are of a different clan. We are of the North Mountain Clan.... ha ha.... I am sure we are all related eventually but from very distant connections. Yes the south shore is half Corkums.

Had a great time during my visit. Am now in foggy Pebble Beach weather... pretty much the same. Nice show going on here. Into my second week. One more to go then south to San Diego area for one week at the Oaks.

Hope you are all well. See you sometime in September. Quite possibly at one of the Restless Pines shows. I am going to try to fit in a few of the "back home" shows when I can.
